“Finding a place that will take care of your family members can be overwhelming, so I was relieved to find Always. They are flexible and personable and focus on what’s most important when caring for your loved one. Beth and Kathy were always there when I needed something. Rishi, my father’s main caregiver, knew exactly how to handle the challenges of caring for a man who was reluctant about having care in the home. I am so thankful for their support!”

“Dave and his staff at Always Best Care truly helped us when my mom was returning home with her hip replacement. Dave came to my mom's home to assess it and gave us recommendations on how to make her home safer. He made me feel so much better about having a caregiver staying with my mom. We also had a discussion on what type of caregiver my mom needed. My mom wanted to meet her caregiver ahead of time and ABC made it happen. It was a great experience, especially knowing my mom was never alone and she had companionship. Thank you for all your help!!”

“We were referred to Always Best Care by the social workers at MT Auburn Hospital. We were worried because we had heard of the senior caregiver shortage. There are no words for how much peace of mind the two amazing caregivers provide our family in caring for our elderly father. They are both completely warm, dependable, professional, kind and caring. I have heard from friends that it doesn't always go like that, so we are most grateful! In six months, both of my dad's caregivers have come to know my father as a person and genuinely care for his wellbeing. The support they provide is immeasurable.”

“It has been about 6 months since Toni and Angel became caregivers for our father Matthew D. We wanted to let you know how incredible they both have been and how important they are to our family. Both Toni and Angel are so dependable, capable, professional and caring. We have heard from friends that it doesn't always go like that, so we know we lucked out not with one but both women. Additionally, we have heard the numerous news reports of the healthcare shortage and are so grateful that your agency could place caregivers with us so quickly when we first contacted you last summer. There are no words for the peace of mind these two amazing women provide for us, and we give daily thanks you matched them with our dad. Thank you and Happy Holidays to you.”

“David was recommended to me by two different social workers as someone to help us find the right assisted living facility for my mom. He walked me and my sister and partner through the process of narrowing down the choices and selecting the best place. He set up some tours for us and accompanied us on others, putting us in contact with the Executive Directors rather than just the marketers. His advice was unfailingly on target. The placed I wanted to see that he didn't recommend were absolutely wrong for my mom, and the one he suggested as the best fit absolutely was the right one. She ended up there for a respite stay and loves it, but has decided she wants to give in-home care a try before committing to the assisted living option. Luckily, David also has an in-home care business that can help us out with that, too! I feel so lucky to have found a trustworthy person to help me navigate the dizzying options for senior care for my mom.”

“Always Best Care is one of the best companies I have ever worked for! Truly, it's been such a breath of fresh air. The way that David, my co-workers, and everyone involved is so dedicated to the well-being of our clients and caregivers is like nothing I have seen. But also the way we are cared for as employees...everyone genuinely cares and wants to see the best for their co-workers, and for our clients as well! David sets an amazing example for the team by going above and beyond for our clients and caregivers, making it only natural to follow in his footsteps and do our very best as well. We've got a rock solid team of people who are well equipped in each area they serve our clients in, and it's really cool to see everyone working with such passion and compassion. This business is all about relationships and cultivating them well, and I can truly say I'm proud to be part of a team that does this so well. It's a healthy and well-run company with great communication and flexibility. It's hands down one of the best places I have every worked! I heard a phrase once that "people may not remember what you've done for them, but they will always remember how you made them feel." Always Best Care does both--acts of kind service, and leaving a lasting impression on everyone we get to interact with. I would recommend Always Best Care a thousand times over!!”

“Despite residing in a well-respected retirement community my parents still needed a little assistance in making it a home. The professionals from Always Best Care were like an All-Star team of senior care help, they stepped in and assessed everything from my parents' major concerns down to the subtle little differences that we probably would never have noticed, making what had been a stressful situation immediately more manageable. My family sleeps easier knowing that my parents have settled in, and without the assistance of Always Best Care that was simply not the case. Their experience is only surpassed by their attentiveness and kindness to the needs of the people they are working with.”

“I have worked for Always Best Care Senior Services for 5 years, mostly as an in-home health care provider for elderly and disabled clients. As an employee of ABC, I have also cared for clients on a one- on- one basis who are in Assisted Living Facilities and Skilled Nursing Facilities. I enjoy my work and my clients. The culture of ABC is that every client is treated as an individual with personal needs and feelings rather than as a case number or diagnosis. ABC’s approach to clients is mirrored in how they treat caregivers. Consideration of the caregiver’s persona is matched with those of the client. The needs of the client are outlined to ensure the caregiver services provided are a comfortable match. I always feel respected, appreciated, and valued in my role and I equally feel the same consideration is provided to my clients. It is a professional, diverse and overall warm working environment. There is an open-door policy for both client and caregiver where open and constant dialogue and feedback is welcome and responded to in real-time. I would recommend working at Always Best Care to anyone in this profession or anyone considering this profession. Annette Vincent”

“Dear Kathy: I am writing to express my deepest appreciation to everyone at Always Best Care who cared for my mother, Noriko Scheuer, during her final months. She had been diagnosed with lung cancer in late 2018, started on hospice care in mid-June 2019, and began with your caregivers in late August. She dies on November 21 at the age of 95-1/2, peacefully and pain-free thanks to the excellent care she received. The team who provided round-the-clock services combined a high level of professionalism with caring personal connection. Marie Jean, Sophie Kayinza, Catherine Nakyobe, Claire Nalwoga, Joan Nampijja, Husa Wright, Nadine Wumba, and for a while Resty Namaalwa were all kind, attentive, and directive with my mother's condition. I also enjoyed speaking with them and learning about their life stories. There women are impressive examples of immigration, dedication and hard work. Sophie is to be commended for her care during my mother's last hours and her kindness to me when I arrived on the scene. A huge thanks to you as well for "being on the casE" in such a responsive and caring manner. I recall that when I first called tou in late August after my mother fell, you were able to visit Boylston Place that same day to make an assessment so that care could being the folliwing day/ And on several other occasions you were very resourceful in responding to last-minute cancellations and changes in care protocols. I believe that under the care of this wonderful team, and their coordination with the Boylston Place and hospice teams, my mother was able to spend her final months comfortably and peacefully, accepting with grace her imminent passing.”

“I can't say enough positive things about Always Best Care, the owner David, the RN Beth and the wonderful home health aides who have been helping my grandparents over the last number of weeks. My grandmother came home from rehab after surviving COVID and was still very weak and on oxygen. David was phenomenally responsive to my initial email (at 9:00 at night!) and arranged to come to the house on a weekend to meet my parents and get them started. The nurse, Beth, accompanied both home health aides on their first day to make sure they were on-boarded with exactly what we needed. She listened to us, she remembered every thing we told her, and she volunteered to pick up meds for us at the pharmacy. The aides (Susan and Josephine) have been lovely - attentive, thoughtful, gentle, observant, and have helped with everything from bathing to laundry to lunches and dishes to sorting endless piles of paper for filing. I'm so grateful to all of them for easing my mom's transition home and taking the burden off my grandfather (who's 86). We may not need them much longer, but they have been outstanding.”

“I may be over 70 years old, but I still like to go out and about and I consider myself independent. Several years before I retired, I made a conscious decision to stop driving my car and to rely on public transportation, whether by the subway and bus system or by taking cabs. I didn’t plan on changing my life. And then, COVID-19 made its lethal appearance around the world. After a couple months of quarantine everywhere, I realized I no longer felt comfortable using public transportation. “When was the last time ‘they’ wiped down the handholds on this bus?” And “Who sat in this cab before me?” I asked myself. I continued to worry. I even read through my stash of professional business cards, hoping for inspiration. I found a card for David Robinson who, in the past, had provided me with specialized transportation. I gave him a call and he introduced me to his company, Always Best Care. With the assistance of Always Best Care associates, I’ve been able to keep appointments and selectively shop. I have maintained a large degree of independence in this viral climate. All the Best Care companions I’ve met are cheerful, prompt, and pleasant. They are, at the same time, both professional and friendly. I would recommend Always Best Care to anyone needing care, companionship, or accompanied transportation in the greater Boston area.”

“Dear Friend, I'm sharing this reference in hopes that it provides comfort to other families who seek caring, attentive, loving and flexible care for their aging loved ones. My mother/family has been one of your clients for a number of years and I know ABC's values and capabilities extremely well. For families who are navigating the journey of elder care, who are facing uncertainty and who are looking for a trusted, reliable team who will care for clients like family (if not better), there is no better team than the wonderful folks at ABC. We've been working with David, Kathy and the team for several years and they have exceeded our hopes. Sure, they are on time, professional, safe and courteous. Even more, they are thoughtful, kind and caring. True problem solvers, they provide comfort knowing that my mom is in terrific hands. Even more, they anticipate challenges and solve problems before they are needed. I'm sharing this info because I know how daunting and, indeed, paralyzing, searching for an agency can be. From the first call, ABC did it right. They listened rather than sold. They personalized it, so we found the right care for my mother. They did nothing less than treat my mom the way they would want their own mother's to be treated. I've learned a lot during the process and one of the most important things I learned is: trust ABC. Best wishes, Zack”

Please feel free to give my information to any other families who are navigating elder care. I've learned a lot during the process and one of the most important things I learned is: trust ABC. Best wishes,”

“I can't say enough positive things about Always Best Care, the owner David, the RN Beth and the wonderful home health aides who have been helping my parents over the last number of weeks. My mom came home from rehab after surviving COVID and was still very weak and on oxygen. I'm so grateful to all of them for easing my mom's transition home and taking the burden off my dad (who's 86). We may not need them much longer, but they were lifesavers.”

Always Best Care was very helpful and patient in assisting me through the whole elder-care process. “I’m beyond grateful for the help and expertise Melanie Carvalho provided over the past year, which was hands down the most challenging of the 15 years I’ve cared for Mom. From her skilled and patient direct care… to her very perceptive and objective take on many aspects of my mom’s situation, including our family’s complex dynamics… to spot-on referrals for additional support and services… I couldn’t have come through without her. Melanie’s warm, outgoing style informed all her efforts and immediately put everyone at ease, most importantly my mother. She became a strong advocate and backbone for both me and Mom, and a skilled negotiator when it came to dealing with conflicting family influences. Her direct, no-nonsense approach was perfectly balanced by sensitivity and diplomacy. In many respects, I consider Melanie an integral part of the family who shared my goal of providing nothing but optimal care and support for Mom. I highly recommend her and Always Best Care, without hesitation.”

 In-Home Care Charlestown, MA

How does In-home Senior Care in Charlestown, MA work?

Home is where the heart is. While that saying can sound a tad cliche, it's especially true for many seniors living in America. When given a choice, older adults most often prefer to grow older at home. An AARP study found that three out of four adults over the age of 50 want to stay in their homes and communities as they age. When you begin to think about why, it makes sense. Home offers a sense of security, comfort, and familiarity.

The truth is, as we age, we begin to rely on others for help. When a family is too busy or lives too far away to fulfill this role, in-home senior care is often the best solution. Home care services allow seniors to enjoy personal independence while also receiving trustworthy assistance from a trained caregiver.

At Always Best Care, we offer a comprehensive range of home care services to help seniors stay healthy while they get the help they need to remain independent. As your senior loved one ages, giving them the gift of senior care is one of the best ways to show your love, even if you live far away.

 Senior Care Charlestown, MA

Aging in Place: The Preferred Choice for Most Seniors

While it's true that some seniors have complicated medical needs that prevent them from staying at home, aging in place is often the best arrangement for seniors and their families. With a trusted caregiver, seniors have the opportunity to live with a sense of dignity and do so as they see fit.

In-home care makes it possible for millions of seniors to age in place every year. Rather than moving to a unfamiliar assisted living community, seniors have the chance to stay at home where they feel the happiest and most comfortable.

Here are just a few of the reasons why older men and women prefer to age at home:

Comfort
Comfort

How much does a senior's home truly mean to them? A study published by the American Society on Aging found that more than half of seniors say their home's emotional value means more than how much their home is worth in monetary value. It stands to reason, that a senior's home is where they want to grow old. With the help of elderly care in Charlestown, MA, seniors don't have to age in a sterilized care facility. Instead, they can age gracefully in the place they want to be most: their home. In contrast, seniors who move to a long-term care facility must adapt to new environments, new people, and new systems that the facility implements. At this stage in life, this kind of drastic change can be more harmful than helpful.

Healthy Living
Healthy Living

Institutional care facilities like nursing homes often put large groups of people together to live in one location. On any given day, dozens of staff members and caregivers run in and out of these facilities. Being around so many new people in a relatively small living environment can be dangerous for a seniors' health and wellbeing. When you consider that thousands of seniors passed away in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, opting for in-home care is often a safer, healthier choice for seniors. Aging in place has been shown to improve seniors' quality of life, which helps boost physical health and also helps insulate them from viral and bacterial risks found in elderly living facilities.

Independence
Independence

For many seniors, the ability to live independently with assistance from a caregiver is a priceless option. With in-home care, seniors experience a higher level of independence and freedom - much more so than in other settings like an assisted living community. When a senior has the chance to age in place, they get to live life on their own terms, inside the house that they helped make into a home. More independence means more control over their personal lives, too, which leads to increased levels of fulfillment, happiness, and personal gratification. Over time, these positive feelings can manifest into a healthier, longer life.

Cost and Convenience
Cost and Convenience

More independence, a healthier life, and increased comfort are only a few benefits of aging in place. You have to take into consideration the role of cost and convenience. Simply put, it's usually easier to help seniors age in place than it is to move them into an institutional care facility. In-home care services from Always Best Care, for instance, can be less expensive than long-term solutions, which can cost upwards of six figures per year. To make matters worse, many residential care facilities are reluctant to accept long-term care insurance and other types of payment assistance.

With Always Best Care's home care services, seniors and their families have a greater level of control over their care plans. In-home care in Charlestown, MA gives seniors the chance to form a bond with a trusted caregiver and also receive unmatched care that is catered to their needs. In long-term care facilities, seniors and their loved ones have much less control over their care plan and have less of a say in who provides their care.

Empowers Seniors

Affordable Care Plans

In-home care is a valuable resource that empowers seniors to age in place on their own terms. However, a big concern for many families and their loved ones is how much in-home care costs. If you're worried that in-home care is too expensive, you may be pleasantly surprised to learn that it is one of the most affordable senior care arrangements available.

Typically, hiring an Always Best Care in-home caregiver for a few hours a week is more affordable than sending your loved one to a long-term care facility. This is true even for seniors with more complex care needs.

At Always Best Care, we will work closely with you and your family to develop a Care Plan that not only meets your care needs, but your budget requirements, too. Once we discover the level of care that you or your senior need, we develop an in-home care plan that you can afford.

In addition to our flexible care options, families should also consider the following resources to help offset potential home care costs:

Veteran's Benefits
Veteran's Benefits

Attendance and aid benefits through military service can cover a portion of the costs associated with in-home care for veterans and their spouses.

Long-Term Care Insurance
Long-Term Care Insurance

Many senior care services like in-home care are included in long-term care insurance options. Research different long-term care solutions to find a plan that provides coverage for senior care.

Private Insurance
Private Insurance

Home care can be included as part of a senior's private insurance plan. Read over your loved one's insurance policy carefully or speak with their insurance provider to determine if in-home care is covered.

Life Insurance
Life Insurance

Depending on the life insurance plan, you may be able to apply your policy toward long-term care. You may be able to use long-term-care coverage to help pay for in-home elderly care.

Respite Care Charlestown, MA

During your Care Plan consultation with Always Best Care, your Care Coordinator will speak with you about in-home care costs and what options there may be to help meet your budget needs.

Compassionate Care. Trusted Caregivers

When you or your senior loved one needs assistance managing daily tasks at home, finding a qualified caregiver can be challenging. It takes a special kind of person to provide reliable care for your senior loved one. However, a caregiver's role involves more than meal preparation and medication reminders. Many seniors rely on their caregivers for companionship, too.

Our companion care services give seniors the chance to socialize in a safe environment and engage in activities at home. These important efforts boost morale and provide much-needed relief from repetitive daily routines. A one-on-one, engaging conversation can sharpen seniors' minds and give them something in which to be excited.

At Always Best Care, we only hire care providers that we would trust to care for our own loved ones. Our senior caregivers in Charlestown,MA understand how important it is to listen and communicate with their seniors. A seemingly small interaction, like a short hug goodbye, can make a major difference in a senior's day. Instead of battling against feelings of isolation, seniors begin to look forward to seeing their caregiver each week.

Understanding the nuances of senior care is just one of the reasons why our care providers are so great at their job.

Unlike some senior care companies, our caregivers must undergo extensive training before they work for Always Best Care. In addition, our caregivers receive ongoing training throughout the year. This training ensures that their standard of care matches up to the high standards we've come to expect. During this training, they will brush up on their communication skills, safety awareness, and symptom spotting. That way, your loved one receives the highest level of non-medical home care from day one.

There’s a lot of charm in Charlestown. Its red-brick homes, tree-lined streets, and views of Boston’s skyline can easily turn a mere visitor into a prospective resident.

But the warm character that comes along with being the oldest neighborhood in a city that prides itself on its history quickly disappears if you walk a few blocks west of Main Street. Instead of finding any quaint and homey streets, you’ll be greeted by a cold concrete wasteland made up of parking lots, highways, and railroads — a monument to the Eisenhower Interstate System instead of anything from the Revolutionary War.

That mess undoubtedly makes Charlestown a less attractive place, and not because it’s an eyesore — though that, of course, doesn’t help. It’s because along with the Charles and Mystic rivers, I-93, which runs through that underdeveloped tract of land, almost entirely isolates Charlestown from its surrounding neighborhoods.

Try traveling to Charlestown from its immediate neighbor, East Cambridge, and you’ll know what I mean. Very few access points exist from that direction: There’s the Gilmore Bridge on the southern side of Charlestown and Cambridge Street at the neighborhood’s northernmost point. But there’s virtually no way to cross the highway and railroad tracks anywhere in between — whether you’re a pedestrian, driver, or cyclist.

Thankfully, that probably won’t always be the case. For years, city planners have been thinking about ways to create more pathways to get to and from Charlestown. And investors have also been eyeing the underused parcels to create mixed-use developments that could add thousands of residential units.

While those ideas are nowhere near becoming reality, they are the kind of proposals that both the neighborhood and Boston as a whole desperately need. In a city with skyrocketing housing costs, there’s no reason such centrally located real estate — with access to the T, no less — should ever be so devastatingly empty.

The only problem with the existing proposals is they’re not ambitious enough. In an ideal world, urban planners would get a do-over — a chance to develop that tract from scratch. They could abolish the highway, tuck the train tracks underground, and fit an entirely new neighborhood between Charlestown and Cambridge. But unfortunately, city planners have to plan with finite and constraining budgets in mind, and so they make do with what they have.

Still, even if limited resources won’t allow that area to realize its maximum potential, there’s plenty of opportunity for development and improving connectivity. That’s why lawmakers should think beyond what’s financially feasible for that lot in the near term and start envisioning what it could look like far down the line too.

There’s a reason that area is the mess that it is: centuries of haphazard, shortsighted planning. Originally, bodies of water and marsh separated Charlestown from Cambridge. They were eventually sealed, but unlike Back Bay, which was built on filled marshes, the landfill that connected Charlestown to Cambridge was never turned into a well-planned neighborhood.

Over the years, it’s been home to various elevated transportation networks that have come and gone. And even with the recent breakthrough of the Green Line extension, leaders were again shortsighted, building yet more elevated tracks instead of tunneling them underground — an understandable decision given the exorbitantly high cost of construction but a missed opportunity nonetheless.

For now, though, there’s reason to be optimistic about the future of the vastly underused land between Charlestown and Cambridge. It might not turn into something like Back Bay, but it can still be better than the urban wasteland it is today. And who knows, maybe someday — not in this century — it will slowly but surely grow into a neighborhood of its own.

Editor’s note: This excerpt has been updated to correct the location of I-93 in relation to Charlestown. It is west of the neighborhood.

This summer is for Italian steakhouses with velvety backroom lounges.

Devoted foodies and restaurant newbies love The Feed. Sign-up now for our twice weekly newsletter.

Luxury cuts of steak, hearty portions of house-made pasta, and a swanky rose-themed lounge have come to Charlestown: Prima is here, courtesy of culinary director and managing partner Nick Dixon. (He also plays those roles at Hunter’s Kitchen & Bar in South Boston—and is culinary director for Southie’s Lincoln Tavern & Restaurant and Capo, too.)

Steps away from the Freedom Trail, Prima occupies the historic space formerly home to Legal Oysteria, which closed in 2020, and before that, Todd English’s Olives, a landmark Mediterranean restaurant in its heyday. Now, Mediterranean is back at the address—Italian, specifically—with sweeping, arched openings and bright windows providing an ideal backdrop for Prima’s open-kitchen layout.

Visit our Ultimate Guide to Boston Restaurant Openings, Summer 2023, to learn more about other exciting new openings this season.

Diners can get a great view of the culinary team hand-rolling pici, a spaghetti-like pasta; stretching mozzarella; slow-roasting tomatoes for marinara sauce; and slicing massive Florentine and tomahawk cuts of steak meant to be shared. (The in-house butchering is a throwback to the Olives days and also allows the team to sell meat cheaper than at a steakhouse that’s not doing its own butchering.)

“We make fresh mozzarella, stracciatella, ricotta, all these different cheeses,” says Dixon, “and we want people to be able to watch that experience when they’re checking out the kitchen. We’re trying to do basically everything in-house and from scratch.” Executive chef Jacob Mendros (of Loco Taqueria & Oyster Bar, which shares a couple owners with Prima) is particularly passionate about the cheeses. As Dixon tells it, Mendros said he’d do the project—as long as there was a mozzarella bar.

At Prima, which opened in June, a diner might start the night with fresh potato focaccia and a sesame semolina baguette, a meat and cheese board, or crudo before opting for a rich veal prime rib topped with goat cheese crema, or a summery artichoke risotto, or the bold pici with ‘nduja, a spicy, spreadable Italian sausage. There’s pizza, too—the Turin-inspired pizza al padellino, a small pan pizza with a buttery, crispy crust.

Finally, desserts end things on a sweet note, with some help from Capo pastry chef Marissa Hart: That house-made creamy ricotta can be found stuffed inside jumbo cannoli—the size of three normal cannoli!—and sprinkled with chocolate chips. There’s also a seasonal strawberry tiramisu, a caramelized-fig-and-olive-oil chocolate mousse, and more.

There’s plenty to drink on the mostly Italian wine list (with some detours into France and California), and the cocktail list pumps up classics with Italian flavors. There’s a blood orange and amaretto margarita, for example, and a lemony, amaro-spiked iced tea.

Appearance-wise, this City Square spot is full of surprises. Walk past Prima’s bustling kitchen through a mosaic-covered hallway into the Rose Room, which is covered in red velvet and fitted with its very own cocktail bar and fireplace, both made of pink marble, and decorated with a sprawling, rose-themed flower installation. Patrons can enjoy anything from Prima’s menu in this lounge or reserve the dreamy space for special events.

“At Prima, you can have two entirely different dining experiences in one night,” says designer Erica Diskin of Assembly Design Studio, who worked on the space. “You can have dinner up front, and then you can go in the back and have after-dinner drinks at the bar.”

The Prima team has lots of upcoming plans, from special events (such as gluten-free nights) to a summer brunch menu launching imminently—expect Dutch babies, blueberry rolls (a spin on a cinnamon roll), and meaty hashes. And starting next Wednesday and lasting throughout the summer, there’ll be house-made gelato for sale from the front door. Keep an eye on social media for pertinent updates, snag a reservation, and start thinking about with whom you’ll share that 40-ounce Brandt tomahawk.

One of Boston’s Most Legendary Restaurant Spaces Gets New Life as a Swanky Italian Steakhouse

Charlestown’sCharlestown’s 10 City Square holds a special place in Boston restaurant history. For nearly two decades, it was the site of notorious celebrity chef Todd English’s landmark restaurant Olives, at one time a line-inducing spot that drew people to Charlestown from all over the city. After a subsequent turn as Legal Oysteria — an Italian restaurant run by the ubiquitous seafood chain Legal — and years of pandemic vacancy, the building is once again drawing crowds of eager diners.

The crew behind Charlestown hangouts Monument and Waverly — as well as a small South Boston empire that includes brunch hotspot Lincoln and Italian restaurant Capo — has launched Prima, an Italian steakhouse with veal chops, piles of pasta, a mozzarella bar, and a dream to once again become a restaurant that everyone can’t stop talking about.

For the resurrection, the restaurant group tapped Erica and Michael Diskin of Assembly Design Studio. The two groups have a long-running partnership that dates back to the design of Lincoln a decade ago. (Some of Assembly Design Studio’s other projects have included chef Jason Santos’ spots Buttermilk & Bourbon and Citrus & Salt, as well as restaurants further afield like the acclaimed Shipwright’s Daughter in Mystic, Connecticut.)

The front dining room was designed with reclaimed wood, leather, cracked subway tiles, and other elements to make the space feel aged, in a sophisticated way. “We wanted it to feel old but not shabby, like a piece of Boston that had been there forever,” Erica says.

Head down a long hallway, past the kitchen, and you’ll end up in the Rose Room, a second dining area that switches up the old-world feel for something more sultry. The room, which was previously a tiny, tucked-away private dining area, was a challenge to redesign, Erica says. “How do you make the worst seat in the house the best?” Step into the room now and there’s a pink marble fireplace, an eight-seat bar with a matching pink countertop, and plush, rose booths with fringed lamps hanging overhead. (It can be rented out as a private dining room, but is otherwise open for regular dinner service.)

“It was supposed to be a turnkey restaurant project,” the group’s culinary director Nicholas Dixon says with a laugh. “And then it turned into a very long, detailed project.”

Chef Jacob Mendros, who has worked everywhere from former fine-dining legend L’Espalier to Loco Taqueria and Oyster Bar, which is backed by the same owners as Prima, leads a menu that includes pasta, pizzas (made in Olives’ original pizza oven), seafood, and steaks carved from their in-house butchery downstairs. Mendros was also adamant that the restaurant needed a mozzarella bar — “He was like, I’ll do this project, but I want the mozzarella,” Dixon says — and the resulting menu section includes fresh mozzarella balls, stracciatella, and creamy ricotta. Marissa Hart, Capo’s pastry chef, dreamed up the desserts, which include gigantic cannoli, strawberry tiramisu, and more.

Other key players in the opening include managing partner Jon Sweeney, who oversees all three of the group’s Charlestown restaurants between Monument, Waverly, and Prima; wine director Jeronimo Ramales, a longstanding Capo veteran; and general manager Andrew Colgan, who formerly managed the dining room at Monument and Waverly.

Dixon is aiming to pull off a dining experience that pays homage to Olives and the place it holds in the city’s restaurant history, he says. “When I was 20, I was a line cook in the city, and people would talk about Olives, and how great of a restaurant Olives was, and that there was always a line to get into Olives,” Dixon says. “I just always remember that being, like, one of my first [moments of] what is that place?”

It was also an early training ground for many of Boston’s current bold-faced restaurant names, including Neptune Oyster owner Jeff Nance, celebrity chef and restaurateur Tiffani Faison, and Michael Serpa, the chef and owner behind seafood spots Select Oyster Bar, Little Whale, and Atlántico.

“It once was a great restaurant,” Dixon says. “The neighborhood needs a great restaurant [again].”

The Marine Barracks in the Charlestown Navy Yard—Building I—is the second oldest building in the Yard and the oldest US Marine Corps structure in the United States. For 163 years, the Marine Barracks served as the home of the "Leathernecks" who guarded this Navy Yard, served on ships entering and departing the Yard, and responded to deployment orders to locations near and far as America's premier "Force in Readiness."

The story of the Marines who lived and worked here exemplifies the story of the Marine Corps as a whole. Beginning as a small, untested security force, the Marine Corps grew into a world-renowned military organization over the next two centuries. The Marine Barracks stands as a permanent reminder in the Navy Yard of their years of service here.

After the establishment of navy yards in 1800, the Secretary of the Navy directed the Marines to guard these new establishments. US Marines were present in Boston as early as 1799—a year after the establishment of the US Marine Corps (the earlier Continental Marine Corps was established in 1775 but then disbanded at the end of the American Revolutionary War). In May 1802, both the Secretary of the Navy and the Commandant of the Marine Corps authorized a 15-man Marine detachment for the Charlestown Navy Yard.

Seeking a Permanent Home

Initially, the Yard's Marine detachment was temporarily quartered aboard USS Constitution. Their first commanding officer, Lieutenant Henry Caldwell, struggled to find a permanent barracks for his detachment of 19 enlisted Marines. Whereas tents sufficed in the summer, the harsh Boston winters required the Marines to shelter in an old lime shed. These austere living conditions hampered recruitment efforts.

Eventually, the Secretary of the Navy approved $5,000 for the construction of a barracks building. However, the barracks had to be built from material not in use already by the Navy. The Marines themselves began constructing the Barracks in 1810 and completed the work in February 1811. The barracks could house up to 100 Marines. The original layout consisted of a central single-story building flanked by two three-story towers. The right-side tower served as quarters for the detachment commander, while junior officers lived in the left tower. Enlisted Marines ate, slept, and socialized in the one-story center section of the barracks. With a permanent home, they could expand their presence and their duties.

Expansion and Leadership

As the number of Marines grew at the Yard, so did the barracks. Major renovations coincided with wartime military expansion: 1861-1862 (Civil War) and 1898-1902 (the Spanish-American War and the Philippine-American War), which eventually resulted in the present-day four-story structure. During the 1930s and World War II in the 1940s, the Works Progress Administration also improved the barracks. By World War II, the Marine detachment numbered 19 officers and 624 enlisted Marines, its largest size yet.

Due to this expansion, the barracks eventually contained wells, a post exchange, barber shop, brig (jail), tailor, laundry room, recreation space, pistol range, galley (kitchen), internal plumbing, bathrooms, bunking, and social clubs. More than a place to live, it was an enclosed community unto itself.

Hundreds of men walked through the halls of the Marine Barracks. Some have left a legacy that survives today, both on the Navy Yard and the Marine Corps as a whole. Between 1802 and 1974, 146 men served as the commanding officer for the Marine detachment here, ranging in rank from sergeant to lieutenant colonel. Two of the detachment's commanding officers later served as Commandant of the Marine Corps: Colonel Archibald Henderson and Colonel Charles McCawley. They served at the Navy Yard during periods of change, and continued to help shape the Marine Corps as Commandants.

Duties and Drill

The most visible duty of the Marines was at the entrances to the yard. Workers, sailors, and visitors all had to pass a Marine guard whenever entering and exiting. By the 1900s, Marines guarded the main entrance to the Yard—Gate 1—24-hours a day, checking workers' identification badges, inspecting deliveries, and guarding against sabotage.

The large grassy area in front of the barracks served as the Marines' parade ground. Within months of completing the Marine Barracks in 1811, the detachment received orders to create a parade ground for inspections, ceremonies, exercises, and drills. During the 1800s until 1974, field and naval cannons have been displayed on the grounds. Some of these cannons date back to the Mexican-American War. Today, only their pedestals can be seen. However, the red Japanese Torii Gate, added in 1963, is still present in front of the barracks. A Torii Gate, associated with Shintoism, symbolizes the transition from the mundane to the sacred, and has been long used by the US Military to represent service in East Asia. Workout equipment, including a rope hang, were installed in the 1960s and are still used by the Charlestown community today.

The Marines in Boston

By being the armed guards of the largest federal installation in Greater Boston, the Marines in Charlestown were often called upon to perform duties beyond the Navy Yard. The Marines regularly joined parades and ceremonies, but also in certain emergencies served as an extension of law enforcement.

In 1824, Marines reported to the Charlestown State Prison to quell a prisoner takeover of the dining hall. They successfully dispersed the prisoners without firing. A decade later, anti-Catholic mobs destroyed the Ursuline Convent in Somerville. Marines guarded those arrested to prevent like-minded rioters from freeing them. In 1854, US Marshals called upon the Marines to aid in the forceful return of freedom seeker Anthony Burns to slavery. Following a failed attempt to break Burns out of federal custody, President Franklin Pierce authorized all federal resources to return Burns to slavery. The Marines from Charlestown formed part of the 1,500 man guard.

Marines further prevented rioting and looting in the aftermath of the Great Boston Fire of 1872 and the Great Chelsea Fire of 1908. In 1972, Marines also removed anti-war protestors who briefly occupied the captain's quarters of USS Constitution.

Closure of the Yard

With the closure of the Charlestown Navy Yard in 1974, the era of a permanent Marine presence at the yard came to an end. The detachment commander, Lieutenant Colonel John R. Yates Jr., reflected on this closure: "[I] merely expected to be one in a continuous line of Barracks commanders. [I] didn’t expect to be the last."

The Marine Barracks closed on May 1, 1974. On July 1, 1974, the remaining Marines undertook their final official act at the Charlestown Navy Yard by lowering the US Flag at the Yard's closure ceremony.

Today, the Marine Barracks continues its service by housing the current stewards of the yard—the National Park Service. Used as office space and living quarters for park staff, the barracks remain vital to the operation of the yard. Looking out over USS Constitution and Boston Harbor, the barracks exemplify the motto that guides the Marine Corps to this day: Semper Fidelis—"Always Faithful."

Charlestown’s latest restaurant is a product of the pandemic. Johnny Pomodoro, an Italian counter-service spot that started as a pandemic takeout idea from fine dining alum Johnny Burke, is now open at 297 Main Street, at Sullivan Street, on a sunny corner spot in the neighborhood.

Detroit-style pizzas — identified by their rectangular shape, thick, spongy dough, and sauce splattered on after toppings — are a big draw here. At Johnny Pomodoro, Burke cooks the pies in seasoned iron pans and then tops them with ingredients like chicken cutlets, crispy pepperoni cups, and, in one case, all the fixings of a Caesar salad. Customers can buy the pizza by the slice during lunchtime (11 a.m. to 2 p.m.) or by the whole tray — and it passes the all-important cold test, according to Burke. “I haven’t met too many pizzas that I don’t like but there are a lot of pizzas that I wouldn’t eat cold,” Burke says. “This [pizza] is just as delicious when it has spent the night in the refrigerator.”

Aside from the pizzas, the menu includes everything from meatballs and mozzarella sticks to wings, subs, and salads. Each item on the menu was designed with takeout in mind, according to Burke. The restaurant itself is only doing takeout and delivery; there’s no sit-down service available. But diners can still poke their heads in, and the restaurant exterior is marked by gigantic front windows intentionally designed to allow hungry customers to peer into the space.

Johnny Pomodoro is one of many takeout concepts that Burke tried out when his full-time catering business came to a standstill during the pandemic. “Johnny’s Smokehouse, Johnny’s Cantina, Johnny Pomodoro — we had different ones,” Burke says. “This was the one that we continuously had the most fun doing and saw the best turnout from. We were like, we’ve got to find a home for this place.”

This isn’t the first time that Burke has launched a takeout-only restaurant: Prior to the pandemic, he started Johnny’s Takeaway at his catering headquarters in West Roxbury. Johnny’s Takeaway has since closed, but the catering business is back in full swing and still based in West Roxbury. Before running his own catering company, Burke and his core catering team worked for fine dining stars in the city including Barbara Lynch.

As for Johnny Pomodoro, Burke has been heartened to see the local turnout for the shop — especially given the two-year slog that it took to open the restaurant — and there are already plans in the works to expand the idea elsewhere in Boston. (Burke declined to share more details until those plans are finalized.)

The chef sees the takeout-only shop as a pretty pandemic-proof business model — and an opportunity to better support staff within the company. “When we got the 200-something events that were on our calendar canceled almost overnight for our catering company, it was like, you know, what do we do?” Burke says. “I really opened this so that my team always has a place to go.”

Johnny Pomodoro is open six days a week from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Closed Mondays (for now). The restaurant will be open seven days a week starting January 23. Order online here.
