Home Care In Watertown, MA

Home Care Watertown, MA

They say that your golden years are the best years of your life. For most older Americans, that's how it should be - a time to relax, reflect, and live life in a familiar place. After all, senior citizens in the U.S. have worked tirelessly to build a better economy, serve their communities, and raise families.

However, as seniors grow older, completing daily tasks like showering and enjoying activities such as visiting the historic Site of the Watertown Paul Revere House gets harder without someone by their side. Unfortunately, many older Americans aren't able to rely on their adult children for help. The reality in today's world is that family members do not have the skills or time to dedicate to caring for their parents. That's where Always Best Care Senior Services comes in.

Our in-home care services are for people who prefer to stay at home as they grow older but need ongoing care that family or friends cannot provide. More and more older adults prefer to live far away from long-term, institutionalized facilities and closer to the place where they feel most comfortable - their home. Home care in Watertown, MA is a safe, effective way to give your loved ones the care they need when they need it the most.

The Always Best Care Difference

Since 1996, Always Best Care has provided non-medical in-home care for seniors to help them maintain a healthy lifestyle as they get older. We are proud to have helped more than 25,000 seniors maintain higher levels of dignity and respect. We focus on providing seniors with the highest level of in-home care available so that they may live happily and independently.

Unlike some senior care companies, we genuinely want to be included in our clients' lives. We believe that personalized care is always the better option over a "one size fits all" approach. To make sure our senior clients receive the best care possible, we pair them with compassionate caregivers who understand their unique needs. That way, they may provide care accordingly without compromising their wellbeing.

The Always Best Care difference lies in life's little moments - where compassionate care and trustworthy experience come together to help seniors live a fruitful, healthy life. Whether you are an aging adult that can't quite keep up with life's daily tasks or the child of a senior who needs regular in-home services, Always Best Care is here to help.

TESTIMONIALS

“I’ve worked for Always Best Care since November of 2022 and I can tell you first hand how caring the owner, David Robinson, is. He has a no pressure sales approach and is always willing to provide resources to people whether or not that garners business for himself. He genuinely cares for people and their wellbeing. This sentiment goes beyond our clients and on to our caregivers as well, as he is constantly telling staff how important our caregivers are and encourages us to do what we can to make sure they are happy and taken care of. David, alongside others in leadership roles, are not above working alongside our caregivers. David will work in and outside of business hours to give people rides, run to the store for them, drop off supplies, and has even done a few handyman tasks to clients who ask. His dedication has no limit. The phrase “I really want to help them.” is one I’ve come accustomed to hearing in the office. David loves people and he loves to help where and when he can. I cannot express enough how good it feels to work for someone with this attitude, especially in a field that has so much burn out. David is genuine, kind, and caring. And I can tell you, he expects nothing less from those of us that work with him. I am proud to be part of such a wonderful team.”

“David Robinson's Always Best Care office is an established, reliable home care agency--one of the best in the Boston area. As a colleague and fellow owner of a home care agency in the community, I can honestly say that Always Best Care provides excellent care and attention to clients and their families. David and his team more than pass the key test, "would I let his office take care of my Mom?". Absolutely. And that is why we are happy to refer cases which we can not cover outside our area.”

“I was in Rehab after hip replacement surgery at Emerson Hospital in Concord, MA (which was successful), but the rehab wasn't working out; evaluations but only 1 OT session by the 3rd day, no PT sessions. Also, since I had to use a walker for any functions, very slow to no response to call button. I was put in touch with David Robinson at Always Best Care in Belmont, MA and he immediately came to the Rehab facility to meet me, drove to our home in Wayland, MA to see our house and meet my wife, and arranged for 24 hour home care for me starting the next day. David picked me up at the Rehab and took me home. I and my wife are both 83, and I'm far from being debilatated. But, the several days of 24/hour care were just what was needed to get me over the initial recovery hump and moving around pretty well at home. The at home PT and OT were excellent. My wife, who had a mild stroke a couple of years ago, would have found it very hard to attend to me right out of Rehab. It was an unexpected cost for us, which in retrospect seems like quite a value.”

Rehab was not successful with my mom walking. With mobility issues my mom needs 12-hour aid 7 days a week to avoid further injuries and proper care being immobile at assisted living. I called 6 agencies for an aid/caregiver and with days’ notice Always Best Care Senior Services/Kathleen Chambers made a full commitment to meeting our needs. All the others either did not respond or were not ready to commit. Kathleen committed and has filled our needs everyday for over 3 weeks with 3 very capable, professional and caring aids who worked in conjunction Physical and Occupational Therapy and my mother’s mobility had made great progress. These 3 aids Rena, Esther and Aidah are so great for my mom and our family. Kathy, Rena, Esther and Aidah are all-stars in my eyes.”

He set up some tours for us and accompanied us on others, putting us in contact with the Executive Directors rather than just the marketers. His advice was unfailingly on target. The placed I wanted to see that he didn't recommend were absolutely wrong for my mom, and the one he suggested as the best fit absolutely was the right one. She ended up there for a respite stay and loves it, but has decided she wants to give in-home care a try before committing to the assisted living option. The way that David, my co-workers, and everyone involved is so dedicated to the well-being of our clients and caregivers is like nothing I have seen. David sets an amazing example for the team by going above and beyond for our clients and caregivers, making it only natural to follow in his footsteps and do our very best as well. We've got a rock solid team of people who are well equipped in each area they serve our clients in, and it's really cool to see everyone working with such passion and compassion. This business is all about relationships and cultivating them well, and I can truly say I'm proud to be part of a team that does this so well. “I have worked for Always Best Care Senior Services for 5 years, mostly as an in-home health care provider for elderly and disabled clients. As an employee of ABC, I have also cared for clients on a one- on- one basis who are in Assisted Living Facilities and Skilled Nursing Facilities. I enjoy my work and my clients. The culture of ABC is that every client is treated as an individual with personal needs and feelings rather than as a case number or diagnosis. ABC’s approach to clients is mirrored in how they treat caregivers. Consideration of the caregiver’s persona is matched with those of the client. The needs of the client are outlined to ensure the caregiver services provided are a comfortable match. I always feel respected, appreciated, and valued in my role and I equally feel the same consideration is provided to my clients. It is a professional, diverse and overall warm working environment. There is an open-door policy for both client and caregiver where open and constant dialogue and feedback is welcome and responded to in real-time. I would recommend working at Always Best Care to anyone in this profession or anyone considering this profession. Annette Vincent”

“Four years ago, when I needed a knee replacement, I was looking online for in-home caregivers and came across this agency in Belmont. David Robinson, the owner, came out right away to assess my needs--up to the point of picking me up at the hospital after surgery with the caregiver. I just had my second knee done and there were some complications this time, but the team at Always Best Care was on it, sending two alternating caregivers and taking me to follow up appointments. I can't say enough about their compassion, expertise, and cheerfulness. Highly recommend them!”

“Dear Kathy: I am writing to express my deepest appreciation to everyone at Always Best Care who cared for my mother, Noriko Scheuer, during her final months. She had been diagnosed with lung cancer in late 2018, started on hospice care in mid-June 2019, and began with your caregivers in late August. She dies on November 21 at the age of 95-1/2, peacefully and pain-free thanks to the excellent care she received. The team who provided round-the-clock services combined a high level of professionalism with caring personal connection. Marie Jean, Sophie Kayinza, Catherine Nakyobe, Claire Nalwoga, Joan Nampijja, Husa Wright, Nadine Wumba, and for a while Resty Namaalwa were all kind, attentive, and directive with my mother's condition. I also enjoyed speaking with them and learning about their life stories. There women are impressive examples of immigration, dedication and hard work. Sophie is to be commended for her care during my mother's last hours and her kindness to me when I arrived on the scene. A huge thanks to you as well for "being on the casE" in such a responsive and caring manner. I recall that when I first called tou in late August after my mother fell, you were able to visit Boylston Place that same day to make an assessment so that care could being the folliwing day/ And on several other occasions you were very resourceful in responding to last-minute cancellations and changes in care protocols. I believe that under the care of this wonderful team, and their coordination with the Boylston Place and hospice teams, my mother was able to spend her final months comfortably and peacefully, accepting with grace her imminent passing.”

“Dear Friend, I'm sharing this reference in hopes that it provides comfort to other families who seek caring, attentive, loving and flexible care for their aging loved ones. My mother/family has been one of your clients for a number of years and I know ABC's values and capabilities extremely well. For families who are navigating the journey of elder care, who are facing uncertainty and who are looking for a trusted, reliable team who will care for clients like family (if not better), there is no better team than the wonderful folks at ABC. We've been working with David, Kathy and the team for several years and they have exceeded our hopes. Sure, they are on time, professional, safe and courteous. Even more, they are thoughtful, kind and caring. True problem solvers, they provide comfort knowing that my mom is in terrific hands. Even more, they anticipate challenges and solve problems before they are needed. I'm sharing this info because I know how daunting and, indeed, paralyzing, searching for an agency can be. From the first call, ABC did it right. They listened rather than sold. They personalized it, so we found the right care for my mother. They did nothing less than treat my mom the way they would want their own mother's to be treated. I've learned a lot during the process and one of the most important things I learned is: trust ABC. Best wishes, Zack”

What is Non-Medical Senior Care in Watertown, MA?

lm-check

Home is where the heart is. While that saying can sound a tad cliche, it is especially true for many seniors living in America. When given a choice, older adults most often prefer to grow older at home. An AARP study found that three out of four adults over the age of 50 want to stay in their homes and communities as they age.

lm-check

When you begin to think about why, it makes sense. Home offers a sense of security, comfort, and familiarity.

lm-check

The truth is, as we age, we begin to rely on others for help. When a family is too busy or lives too far away to fulfill this role, in-home senior care is often the best solution. Home care services allow seniors to enjoy personal independence while also receiving trustworthy assistance from a trained caregiver.

lm-check

At Always Best Care, we offer a comprehensive range of home care services to help seniors stay healthy while they get the help they need to remain independent. As your senior loved one gets older, giving them the gift of senior care is one of the best ways to show your love, even if you live far away.

Respite Care

Respite Care Services

According to AARP, more than 53 million adults living in the U.S. provide care to someone over 50 years old. Unfortunately, these caregivers experience stress, exhaustion, and even depression. Our respite care services help family caregivers address urgent obligations, spend time with their children, and enjoy nearby activities. Perhaps more importantly, respite care gives family members time to recharge and regroup. Taking personal time to de-stress reduces the risk of caregiver burnout. So, if you've always wanted to eat at the local La Bodega or visit Watertown Founders Monument, don't feel bad. Doing so is great for both you and your loved one.

At the end of the day, our goal is to become a valuable part of your senior's daily routine. That way, we may help give them the highest quality of life possible. We know that staying at home is important for your loved one, and we are here to help make sure that is possible.

If you have been on the fence about non-medical home care, there has never been a better time than now to give your senior the care, assistance, and companionship they deserve.

Aging in Place: The Preferred Choice for Most Seniors

While it's true that some seniors have complicated medical needs that prevent them from staying at home, aging in place is often the best arrangement for seniors and their families. With a trusted caregiver, seniors have the opportunity to live with a sense of dignity and do so as they see fit - something that is unavailable to many older people today.

In-home care makes it possible for millions of seniors to age in place every year. Rather than moving to a strange nursing home, seniors have the chance to stay at home where they feel the happiest and most comfortable.

Here are just a few of the reasons why older men and women prefer to age at home:

How much does a senior's home truly mean to them?

A study published by the American Society on Aging found that more than half of seniors say their home's emotional value means more than how much their home is worth in monetary value. It stands to reason, then, that a senior's home is where they want to grow old.

With the help of elderly care in Watertown, MA, seniors don't have to age in a sterilized care facility. Instead, they can age gracefully in the place they want to be most: their home. In contrast, seniors who move to a long-term care facility must adapt to new environments, new people, and new systems that the facility implements. At this stage in life, this kind of drastic change can be more harmful than helpful.

Institutional care facilities like nursing homes often put large groups of people together to live in one location. On any given day, dozens of staff members and caregivers run in and out of these facilities. Being around so many new people in a relatively small living environment can be dangerous for a seniors' health and wellbeing. When you consider that thousands of seniors passed away in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, opting for in-home care is often a safer, healthier choice for seniors.

Aging in place has been shown to improve seniors' quality of life, which helps boost physical health and also helps insulate them from viral and bacterial risks found in elderly living facilities.

For many seniors, the ability to live independently with assistance from a caregiver is a priceless option. With in-home care, seniors experience a higher level of independence and freedom - much more so than in other settings like a nursing home. When a senior has the chance to age in place, they get to live life on their own terms, inside the house that they helped make into a home. More independence means more control over their personal lives, too, which leads to increased levels of fulfillment, happiness, and personal gratification. Over time, these positive feelings can manifest into a healthier, longer life.

More independence, a healthier life, and increased comfort are only a few benefits of aging in place. You have to take into consideration the role of cost and convenience. Simply put, it's usually easier and more affordable to help seniors age in place than it is to move them into an institutional care facility. According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, seniors who age in the comfort of their homes can save thousands of dollars per month.

In-home care services from Always Best Care, for instance, are often less expensive than long-term solutions, which can cost upwards of six figures per year. To make matters worse, many residential care facilities are reluctant to accept long-term care insurance and other types of payment assistance.

With Always Best Care's home care services, seniors and their families have a greater level of control over their care plans. In-home care gives seniors the chance to form a bond with a trusted caregiver and also receive unmatched care that is catered to their needs. In long-term care facilities, seniors and their loved ones have much less control over their care plan and have less of a say in who provides their care.

 Elderly Care Watertown, MA

Affordable Care

In-home care is a valuable resource that empowers seniors to age in place on their own terms. However, a big concern for many families and their loved ones is how much in-home care costs. If you're worried that in-home care is too expensive, you may be pleasantly surprised to learn that it is one of the most affordable senior care arrangements available.

Typically, hiring an Always Best Care in-home caregiver for a few hours a week is more affordable than sending your loved one to a long-term care facility. This is true even for seniors with more complex care needs.

At Always Best Care, we will work closely with you and your family to develop a Care Plan that not only meets your care needs, but your budget requirements, too. Once we discover the level of care that you or your senior need, we develop an in-home care plan that you can afford.

In addition to our flexible care options, families should also consider the following resources to help offset potential home care costs:

If your loved one qualifies, Medicaid may help reduce in-home care costs. Review your MA's Medicaid program laws and benefits, and make sure your senior's financial and medical needs meet Medicaid eligibility requirements.
Attendance and aid benefits through military service can cover a portion of the costs associated with in-home care for veterans and their spouses.
Many senior care services like in-home care are included in long-term care insurance options. Research different long-term care solutions to find a plan that provides coverage for senior care.
Home care can be included as part of a senior's private insurance plan. Read over your loved one's insurance policy carefully or speak with their insurance provider to determine if in-home care is covered.
Depending on the life insurance plan, you may be able to apply your policy toward long-term care. You may be able to use long-term-care coverage to help pay for in-home elderly care.
 Senior Care Watertown, MA

Compassionate Care. Trusted Caregivers.

When you or your senior loved one needs assistance managing daily tasks at home, finding a qualified caregiver can be challenging. It takes a special kind of person to provide reliable care for your senior loved one. However, a caregiver's role involves more than meal preparation and medication reminders. Many seniors rely on their caregivers for companionship, too.

Our companion care services give seniors the chance to socialize in a safe environment and engage in activities at home. These important efforts boost morale and provide much-needed relief from repetitive daily routines. A one-on-one, engaging conversation can sharpen seniors' minds and give them something in which to be excited.

At Always Best Care, we only hire care providers that we would trust to care for our own loved ones. Our senior caregivers in Watertown, MA understand how important it is to listen and communicate with their seniors. A seemingly small interaction, like a short hug goodbye, can make a major difference in a senior's day. Instead of battling against feelings of isolation, seniors begin to look forward to seeing their caregiver each week.

Understanding the nuances of senior care is just one of the reasons why our care providers are so great at their job.

Unlike some senior care companies, our caregivers must undergo extensive training before they work for Always Best Care. In addition, our caregivers receive ongoing training throughout the year. This training ensures that their standard of care matches up to the high standards we've come to expect. During this training, they will brush up on their communication skills, safety awareness, and symptom spotting. That way, your loved one receives the highest level of non-medical home care from day one.

Assisted Living Referral Services

While it's true that many seniors prefer to age at home, sometimes in-home care isn't the best fit. For those seniors and their families, choosing an assisted living facility makes more sense. Unfortunately, finding the optimal care facility is easier said than done in today's day and age. That's when Always Best Care's assisted living referral services begin to make a lot of sense.

Assisted living is a form of housing intended for seniors who require varying degrees of medical and personal attention. Accommodations may include single rooms, apartments, or shared living arrangements. Assisted living communities are typically designed to resemble a home-like environment and are physically constructed to encourage the independence of residents.

Respite Care Watertown, MA

At assisted living communities, seniors receive help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and eating. They may also benefit from coordination of services with outside healthcare providers, and monitoring of resident activities to ensure their health, safety, and well-being. Caregivers who work at assisted living communities can also provide medication administration and personal care services for older adults.

Other services offered within assisted living communities can include some or all of the following:

  • Housekeeping
  • Laundry
  • Recreational Activities
  • Social Outings
  • Emergency Medical Response
  • Medication Monitoring
  • Family Visitation
  • Personal Care
 Caregivers Watertown, MA

At Always Best Care, our representatives can match your senior's emotional, physical, and financial needs with viable assisted living communities nearby. Results are based on comparative data, so you can select the best choice for you or your loved one.

Always Best Care works closely with local senior living communities to gain valuable knowledge that we then use to help seniors and their loved ones make informed decisions. This information can include basic care and rent, resident availability, and services provided. Because Always Best Care is compensated by these communities, we provide senior living referral services at no extra cost to you.

Some of the most popular assisted living communities to consider in our area include the following:

  • The Residence at Watertown Square
  • Brigham House
  • The Ivy at Watertown Assisted Living and Memory Care
  • Dewey Street
  • Watertown Rehabilitation and Nursing Center
  • Pleasant View Manor

OP-ED: MBTA Service in Watertown Takes the Cake: Worst Service Ever!

By Mark Pickering

When it comes to MBTA service, residents in numerous Boston neighborhoods and abutting communities would love to say they have the worst. They’d be wrong.

Watertown “wins” hands down.

A Boston Globe article (“Missed connections at Nubian,” Feb. 20 ) lays out the many problems with the MBTA’s bus service at Nubian Station. There’s certainly lots of room for improvement at that Roxbury terminal.

But at least there is an actual terminal. Watertown, of course, has no bus terminal at all. In fact, Watertown lacks any of the basics for a modern transit system such as a trolley, subway or commuter rail stop. Watertown lacks any of those 21st century-style dedicated bus lanes, too.

Watertown Square’s buses operate out of several separate places. This situation makes clear that a unified T station in Watertown Square would be a major upgrade.

For its part, the inbound No. 70 bus, which could be nicknamed the “tortoise,” does not actually stop in the heart of the square.

If you wanted to get a downtown bus, you could get off on Main Street and, then, walk for blocks and hope your bus hasn’t taken off in the meantime.

Along the way, you’d pass by the bus stops for the No. 59 to Needham, and the No. 71 to Harvard Square. Those are in front of a brick office building in the square.

If you were continuing to walk to the downtown buses, the next obstacle would be crossing the Mount Auburn Street/Galen Street intersections. That’s a free-for-all mess on both sides of the Charles River.

The so-called Watertown Yard is a run-down area that has been in a state of decay since the MBTA got rid of the Green Line “A” branch in 1969. That shutdown was met with fierce community resistance.

Similarly, in the 1980s the relocation of the Orange Line ran into community opposition in Roxbury. Critics did not want to have buses replace the Orange Line service to Dudley Square, now known as Nubian.

Sure Roxbury has more people than Watertown roughly 60,000 versus 35,000. But Roxbury also has stops on the relocated Orange Line.

Ultimately, the MBTA replaced the elevated Orange Line to the Nubian station with “Silver Line” service. Those bus lines have numerous dedicated lanes or stops.

In contrast, the T replaced the Green Line trolley to Watertown Square with the No. 57 bus, which runs through Brighton. There are no dedicated bus lanes on that route or any other in Watertown.

In sum, MBTA service to Watertown is the worst of any Boston neighborhood or abutting community. We deserve better.

The city of Watertown has been focused this year on making improvements to the square. Improving MBTA service, in both the short and long term, should be part of that process.

Award Winning Restaurant Featuring Steak & Frites Coming to Watertown

The following announcement was provided by Medium Rare:...

The following announcement was provided by Medium Rare:

Medium Rare, the award-winning, iconic, full-service restaurant famous for its French-influenced steak and frites (fries), is coming to the Boston area. The lease is signed. The location is set: 130 Arsenal Yards, Watertown, MA. The hammers are in motion (on the build-out, not the already-tender steak). The opening is estimated to be LATE SPRING 2024.

Why Boston? Medium Rare co-owner Mark Bucher is a huge fan of the Patriots and the NFL. In fact, Bucher’s already warming up to perform gridiron culinary magic at the Taste of NFL 2024 — his third year at the event that helps raise awareness and funds to tackle hunger.

Oh-My-Goodness: At Medium Rare, simplicity and consistency are the key ingredients. The dinner menu is deliciously uncomplicated and an incredible value: just under $30 for a three-course prix fixe meal, featuring a flavorful fresh mixed green salad, artisan rustic bread, hand-cut fries and the main course — scrumptious Coulotte steak topped with a secret sauce.

Dessert Decadence: While simplicity is Medium Rare’s mantra, there are plenty of choices when it comes to their over-the-top, decadent desserts — like the 7-layer chocolate cake, the 7-layer carrot cake or their legendary hot fudge sundae.

Bring on the Brunch: Medium Rare sizzles on weekends, too, with brunches featuring their bottomless mimosas, bloody marys and screwdrivers, along with plenty of delicious menu choices (you gotta try their life-changing French toast). All for about $40 a person.

*Sauce Secrets: With hints of mustard and cracked pepper, Medium Rare’s sauce is one of the closest guarded recipes. Only 2 people know the full recipe but the chefs know what ingredients to add to the already-made base and how to heat it — but NOT what’s in it. It’s gluten-free but not dairy-free. (Fun fact: Medium Rare employees sign a confidentiality agreement to keep its secret sauce ingredients secret!)

Smashing Success: Medium Rare calls the Washington, D.C., metro area home, where it’s been named Best Steakhouse and OpenTable’s Diners’ Choice. But co-owner Mark Bucher believes the people of Boston and Watertown will love a memorably fresh dining experience, so he’s taking his steak-and-frites to the Arsenal Yards neighborhood to create a mouthwatering new scene.

A Little More About Mark: Mark Bucher is a Washington, D.C.-area restaurateur, a 2022 Washingtonian of the Year, and World Burger Champion, who has not only been wowing Medium Rare diners with wonderful food since 2011, but has also been combating food insecurity. Ever since the first days of the pandemic, Bucher has introduced multiple charitable efforts to fight hunger.

His signature nonprofit program — Feed the Fridge — is a series of community refrigerators filled daily with restaurant-quality food. Anyone can help themselves to as many meals as they need, for free, no questions asked. Feed the Fridge has increased community food supply chains by:

Stay tuned for Bucher’s charitable plans to bring more meal security to Boston.

The Post Office located on Main Street in Watertown will be closing for an extended period starting in January 2024.

The Post Office, located across from the Library at 126 Main St., Watertown, will close while the building where it is located is torn down and replaced with a five-story mixed use building with retail on the ground floor and four stories of residential above. The project was approved by the Zoning Board of Appeals in October.

During the hearing for the project, the developers said they had contacted the U.S. Postal Service about designing a new space in the development, and also said there may be a temporary location. Under current plans, there will be no temporary spot in Watertown Square.

The Post Office will close on Jan. 26, 2024, said Steve Doherty, Strategic Communications Specialist for the United States Postal Service Atlantic Area – Northeast Region.

“The landlord is planning to redevelop the property, a process that is expected to take approximately two years,” Doherty said. “We hope to move back into the newly renovated building at that time. In the interim, we will be moving operations into our Newtown office, which is about a half mile away at 123 Galen St. in Watertown.”

BOSTON — Imagine trading the honking and the stopping and starting of a stressful commute for a relaxing ride down the Charles River.

It might be a great way to start the day.

That’s the vision of a Watertown man who wants to launch regular ferry service from his hometown to downtown Boston.

“It’s just such a completely different world getting back and forth on the water,” said Drew Rollert, a software engineer who launched Wada Hoppah in his spare time.

Wada Hoppah is a water hopper with a Boston accent.

“The vision is to create a comfortable, relaxing, and reliable way to get from Watertown to Boston and back, either to commute, to go see a Sox game or to go dine.”

Rollert’s company would feature environmentally friendly electric boats that can navigate the Charles’ shallow waters.

They’ll also include features not available on the T.

“When you get on it, you’ll have your own seat. There’ll be a table and you can put a laptop, a phone or Starbucks on it. And then plug in the heated seats. A bathroom, you can use a bathroom during your commute!”

There is some precedent for boat service on the Charles. Photos from the Watertown Free Library show companies that took passengers out on the Charles back in the mid-20th century.

Rollert’s main motivation is to get cars off the road. He says “the old adage is 90% of most cars only have one person in them.”

He knows the ferry isn’t a panacea for Boston’s traffic woes but believes it’s a piece of a larger puzzle.

“I would hope that we could be like the Lynn Ferry, the Hull Ferry, that says hey, you know what, they may run north and south, we’re going east to west and we’re just adding on to the options.”

The target fare is in the range of $25 which Rollert says is less than taking an Uber.

He hopes they might be able to get some governmental agencies to subsidize the service.

The Department of Conservation and Recreation manages the Charles River.

Officials there tell Boston 25 News commercial operations on the river require a permit.

They say they’ve been in touch with Rollert and are waiting to get his completed application.

Rollert had hoped to get service going this fall but now says that next spring is more likely.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.

Watertown’s Semi-Pro Hockey Team Features Former Pros, College Players and Even Rec League Skaters

For some, playing for the Boston Gold Kings is a second chance to keep their hockey career going, for others being on the semi-pro team based out of Watertown is the first time playing with an organized adult team, and it’s fun for all.

The first game for the Boston Gold Kings will be at Ryan Arena on Saturday, Jan. 6 at 8 p.m. against the Holyoke Papermen. On Dec. 27, members of the first year team skated with their families at John A. Ryan, just a few days before their first official game in the fledgling Union Hockey League.

The team is captained by Watertown native Christian Faggas, who had a brief pro career in the minor leagues. After playing for Belmont Hill and Babson College, he played a year in the Southern Professional Hockey League with the Huntsville Havoc in Alabama and then was traded to the Vermillion County Bobcats in Illinois. Faggas expected that to be the end of his career on the ice.

“I had a knee injury that kind of prevented me from keep going with it so honestly I took a year off last year and honestly was pretty content with kind of hanging them up,” Faggas said. “Then I saw this, and someone reached out to me, and I came out to a skate and got the fire back. No turning back now.”

The Gold Kings squad has a wide range of talent and experience, Faggas said.

“I would say there are some pretty good players. There is a mixed bag of skills, a lot of college guys, a lot of (college) club hockey guys that are pretty competitive,” he said. “There are a few guys in the league that played professional (hockey), like myself. There are a lot of guys who fizzled out at juniors.”

On the other end of the spectrum, Brian Cole, 29, last played competitive hockey at the youth level.

“I did kind of skate a little bit when I was young and played three years of town hockey, Bantam Level, like eighth grade, ninth grade, 10th grade,” Cole said. “Then I stopped for a couple years, and got back into (pickup games) when I was in college, but I was obviously pretty far behind guys who started younger than I did and stuck with it.”

This will be the first time Cole plays as an adult in a full-contact league or with referees. The game is different from the men’s leagues and pickup games he has been playing.

“I realized I was just used to playing with civilized gentlemen, where this is a little more, you gotta watch out,” Cole said. “There is no room for these little trick moves. You’ve got to do the smart play, the safer play.”

The games are played on the weekends, and practices are at night, which is helpful for Cole, who works Monday to Friday as an engineering technician for a medical device manufacturer in South Boston.

Russ Childers was one of the guys who last played on a competitive team int he juniors, skating for the then Canton Rangers when he was 21. That was 20 years ago. Since then he has kept up his skills playing in beer leagues and tournaments.

When he spotted a Facebook post about tryouts for the Gold Kings, Childers sent a message expressing interest. He got a call from Ven Thangaraj, the team owner.

“Ven and I have been friends for years, and I had no idea he was running this whole thing. So, when he called me it was a Friday afternoon and I thought he was calling me asking me, ‘What’s up?'” Childers said. “I was like, ‘Hey, what’s up man?’ and he was like, ‘You’re an idiot. You’re crazy.'”

Childers didn’t know that Thangaraj was behind the effort to start a hockey team.

“He said, ‘You want to come and hit and get in fights and do all these other things and full contact hockey at 41?,'” Childers said. “I was like, ‘Ya, why not? It’s fun.'”

Thangaraj said that after he thought about it, Childers was a good fit.

“To his defense, every story I hear from him is how he gets into fights in men’s leagues and he gets kicked out of games, so, I’m like, ‘Here you can do it and you won’t get kicked out,” Thangaraj said.

Childers was also one of the few natural defensemen.

“I think we’re about 26 (players) so far,” Childers said. “Every game you suit at least 15 (players), maybe 18. Believe it or not, back in July when we had our first real skate we had six goalies show up. Goalies have not been the problem, it’s been defense.”

Childers looks forward to playing games, and weekend road trips, but now he has a family to get back to after practice and games, and runs his own gym, Paramount Performance & Rehab in Newton. Childers’ kids, ages 9 and 12, play hockey and he co-coaches the teams.

He doesn’t feel his age when he is on the ice with the rest of the team, which is mostly made up of guys in their 20s.

“You don’t realize you are older than them until the next day when you get up and you’re sore and they’re not,” Childers said.

The new league is coming together, Thangaraj said. The schedule was just finalized this week, after some teams that planned to skate this year announced they would have to wait.

The UHL has 12 teams, split into two divisions. The Gold Kings will play in the Eastern Division, along with the Canton Mallards, Conway Yetis, Holyoke Papermen, Hudson Valley Vipers, and North Shore Nighthawks. They won’t play the six teams in the Western Division until the playoffs, which Thangaraj said is planned to be held at a central location that is yet to be determined. See the Gold Kings schedule here.

The Gold Kings also seek help on game day. The team seeks volunteers to sell tickets, a public address announcer/DJ, a scorekeeper and a photographer. Those interested can email [email protected]

Planning Board Approves Master Plan for Watertown Mall Transformation

The basic plan for remaking a large portion of Arsenal Street, including the Watertown Mall, has been approved by the Planning Board. Before the multiple lab buildings, residential units, retail, and garages can be built, however, developers will have to come back for approval of each building.

Almost all of the project falls within Watertown’s Regional Mixed Use District (RMUD), which allows for additional height and density that most of the town but requires a master plan to be approved. On Nov. 8, the Planning Board unanimously approved the master plan, dubbed the Watertown Mall Transformation by developers, Alexandria Real Estate Equities.

“This has been a thoroughly collaborative process,” said Rickie Golden, vice president of real estate development at Alexandria. “Thoughtful feedback from the board, staff, and the community made this a better project.”

Since the project was first proposed some significant changes have been made to the plans, Golden said, including adding residential units to the project, more ground-floor retail space, and additional opportunities public amenities on the site.

Four floors of residential units are planned to go on top of the retail that would go where the current Best Buy building is located. The master plan includes 103,727 sq. ft of residential space. Fifteen percent of the residential units will be affordable units, and the project will add $8 million in linkage fees to the City’s Affordable Housing Trust, Golden said.

The plan calls for keeping Target and the bank in the parking lot in front of Target. The total retail space will be 214,859 sq. ft., including 53,593 sq. ft. of space in the retail under the residential units. The building will be 84-feet tall, including the 11-foot-tall penthouse for mechanical equipment.

Four new five-story office/lab buildings are planned to be built around a plaza, which is part of 6 acres of publicly accessible open space. In the middle of the plaza is an amenities building, said Victory Pechaty, design director at Gensler.

“The heart of the plaza is the A2 amenity building, which is meant to be a food and beverage amenity open to the public,” said Pechaty who added that tenants of the campus would have the right to reserve the space for special functions.

The office/lab buildings will be over 100 feet tall, including more than 20 feet of mechanical penthouses at the top. The master plan includes 681,616 sq. ft. of new office/lab space. In addition, the complex includes the existing 135,182 sq. ft. building at 480 Arsenal Way.

There will also be 30,039 sq. ft. of amenity space in two buildings. Besides the building in the middle of the plaza, a 21,045 sq. ft. amenity space will be located on the bottom of a new garage to be built next to Target.

The seven-story parking garage next to Target is one of two included in the master plan. The second, a five-story one, is located on the west end of the property. It is located at 480 Arsenal Way, which is not in the RMUD. That project will have to be separately approved by the Zoning Board of Appeals.

To get to the building and garage at 480 Arsenal Way vehicles will have to cross over the Community Path that runs from School Street to Arlington Street and runs behind Target. Multiple Planning Board members said they had safety concerns with pedestrians and bicyclists crossing the driveway.

Jeffrey Dirk of Vanasse & Associates said flashing signs to alert drivers will be installed. They will automatically turn on when a pedestrian or cyclist is detected. In addition, the crossing will be raised, and scored concrete will be installed leading up to the crossing, and the roadway will be narrowed in an effort to slow the speed of motor vehicles.

The P1 garage, next to Target, has 1,180 spaces, and P2 will have another 700 spaces, plus 658 surface spaces, for a total of 2,538. Some members of the Planning Board wondered if the amount of parking in the garages would all be necessary. They suggested finding ways to convert some surface spots into open space. Rich Hollworth, of VHB, said he has seen some garages where a fitness center was built on the ground floor of a garage. That floor has additional ceiling height to allow for vans, so it is easier to convert to another use.

The Planning Board also asked whether additional residential units could be added. Pechaty said that the labs need large exhaust vents going to the roof, which would significantly cut down the amount of residential space if built on floors above lab space. Planning Board members said they could consider having residential on the bottom floors, or have the residential be built side-by-side with the lab space.

Planning Board member Payson Whitney said he is worried about the size of the buildings being built right next to Arsenal Street.

“One hundred feet is pretty tall of a building to be facing right on the street,” said Whitney who asked if designers could make the building shorter, but wider and/or push the mechanical penthouse farther from the street.

Golden noted that the buildings shown in the master plan are not the final designs, and Alexandria will have to return for final approvals.

Whitney said the project is like Arsenal Yards, where each building had to go before the Planning Board after that master plan was approved

“This is a master plan. This established a box to build within,” Whitney said. “We are not making all the decisions here.”

In recent years, the amount of developable land area for research laboratories in Boston and Cambridge has been shrinking, fast. Today, the city of Watertown just north of Cambridge is set to realize its largest ever architectural project to date with SGA’s forthcoming Arsenal on the Charles, a new 1.2 million-square-foot life sciences campus on the bank of the Charles River.

SGA, with offices in Boston and New York, specializes in highly sustainable life science buildings and campuses. The Arsenal on the Charles will be built on top of a former military production center in the blue-collar city of Watertown. The campus will adaptively reuse the existing brick building on site and feature three new buildings designed by SGA: 500 North Beacon Street, 4 Kingsbury Avenue, and West Garage; each targeted for LEED Gold and Fitwel certifications.

At 500 North Beacon Street, a new 4-story office and research lab will be clad in vertical copper fins and glass according to the architects. SGA claims the design “celebrates the rich history of the campus while injecting the site with a contemporary aesthetic.”

4 Kingsbury Avenue will function as a gateway to the campus which ties into the existing historical brick factory building on site. SGA claims that 4 Kingsbury Avenue was “designed to feel light and encourage transparency.” Brick on its lower floors pulls from the historic, former military buildings on site.

West Garage will be a net zero, 6,000-square-foot pavilion connected to an existing parking facility, fitted by a “visible wood-clad steel structure” contextually designed for the site’s industrial history, a press release stated. West Garage will abut the Alexandria Center for Life Science whose facade will incorporate a perforated aluminum mesh canopy that doubles as an open rain screen, SGA said.

The Arsenal on the Charles adds to SGA’s existing track record of building lab spaces such as LINX and 250 Arsenal Place. Branded as “Watertown’s premier innovation campus,” the complex will have five shuttle lines between it and key transit points; two of those will be Harvard Square and Central Station on the T’s Red Line. The campus offers a childcare center, a green space, community gardens, and an amenities hub slated for mixed programming.

Greetings:

I extend Happy New Year wishes for good health, peace and prosperity for one and all.

Almost ten years ago; 02/03/2014, to be exact; Charlie Breitrose launched Watertown News. Watertown’s: “independent, locally owned news website” became a reality. Thank you, Charlie, for your many years of unbiased news coverage and open venue for citizen thought provoking interactions. Congratulations – Happy Tenth Anniversary!!!

Only three years prior to Watertown News, two of Watertown’s Post Offices were being evaluated for closure. How many residents recall the 2011-2012 turmoil created by the proposed closing of the East Watertown (589 Mount Auburn St.) and New Town (123 Galen St.) Post Offices by the United States Postal Service (USPS)?

For now, the two locations are still operating. “Long-term financial plans” for funding of the sites by the USPS can be subject to change. Also to note: The 123-125 Galen St. property was recently offered for sale; currently listed as: “off market”.

Charlie Breitrose, writing for the Watertown Patch and Erin Baldassari for Watertown Tab/WickedLocal.com reported on the post office branch closings as follows:

https://www.wickedlocal.com/story/watertown-tab/2012/05/14/watertown-post-offices-to-remain/40419196007/

https://patch.com/massachusetts/watertown/east-watertown-new-town-post-offices-may-close-post-o67bc572ec4

Without notice to stakeholders; the “Watertown Financial Post Office” (126 Main St.) will be closing on 01/26/2024. Clyde Younger broke the news. Who knew the post office would be closing in four weeks?

Did Watertown’s Team advocate for a permanent/temporary location? Or review the needs of the post office patrons who wait in the long lines for counter service? Is there a confirmed future for a “Watertown Financial Post Office”, to be sited in Watertown Square? Not all post offices are equal in available services for the public. (See https://tools.usps.com/find-location.htm?location=1434632)

Phrases such as: “We hope to move back” and “considering relocating and moving-back” are not reassuring. Two plus years is a long time for open-ended uncertainties.

Watertown’s Team engaged in the development process for the multiple parcels at 104-126 Main St. All knowing the ramifications for displacing an existing business service that is central to the visibility of Watertown Square.

In my opinion, Watertown’s Team must also initiate and engage in open dialogue to explore all options to maintain Watertown Square post office stability. Enhanced Postal Services are an integral part of providing a presence as a viable destination in the nucleus of Watertown. Thank you.

Best,Angie
