SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — The San Angelo Stock Show continues, on Thursday the Junior Angora Wether Futurity Show held at the fairgrounds.
Youth from all over Texas lining up to weigh their Angora goats for the competition which – according to Eddie Holland a judge at the San Angelo Stock Show said is a contest that has been taking place for some time.
“Several group of men we met several years ago, here in San Angelo (some men) came up with a concept of having this show, these are castrated male goats,” he said.
The competing Angoras are evaluated on a three-part system,
“Right, there they are weighing them to develop them into a light, middle weight and heavy weight class,” he said.
Holland said that the goats then are separated as even as possible.
“They are judged live, they are judged on the fleece, ” he said.
According to Holland the fleece has a value, the highest value gets first place – the leas value lands in tenth place.
A sample of the goat’s fleece is snipped and placed in a labeled paper bag after weigh-in, collected with the other, then tested overnight.
The youth who travel to the stock shows told KLST, it’s more than competition.Piper Owens and McKendree Galindo are not only both from Ozona, Texas, they are best friends and both show Angora goats.
“We get to spend time together, and I get to spend time with my family, ” said Galindo, “Taking care of goats make you responsible, cause you actually have a responsibility of going over there and feeding them and it’s not your parents’ job.”
Owens said she enjoys taking care of her goat, who happens to be a runt.“Mine is small, I can tell it apart from the rest, and it’s so cute,” she said, “You want to make sure that they get fed well. “
Micheal Preddy is also from Ozona, Texas, and said it’s all about spending time with friends who he says have since graduated.
“And now it’s me and my girlfriend here, we both raised our two (goats) in the same pens,” he said.Preddy said he has enjoyed the experience he’s had raising his goats, something he’s done since he was a child.
Isaiah Delarosa’s has two goats he said loves to show.
“Making them walk, is my favorite part,” he said.
Goats are shown in full fleece, sheared, then the goats and their fleece are judged again and evaluated on the body structure and fiber characteristics.
Once all parts are judged, the points are then tallied to determine the winner, according to Holland.
“And they add all three points together and that comes up with whoever wins grand champion believe they win $500 dollars cash for winning and a buckle,” he said.
