Boone, N.C. — Walking through the devastation left behind by Hurricane Helene in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina, Liberty University’s disaster relief team is seeing firsthand the heartaches of families who have endured incredible losses.
A team of eight students and two team leaders from Liberty’s LU Serve Now initiative left campus on Sunday to spend the week removing debris and mold and completing mud outs and various other tasks while offering encouragement and care to those affected. The trip is one of three the university has organized in response to Hurricane Helene and in partnership with Samaritan’s Purse. Next week, two more teams will travel to Valdosta, Ga., and Perry, Fla. Liberty recently sent a trailer with 22 pallets of bottled water to Anchor Faith Church in Valdosta to be distributed to those in the community, and President Dondi Costin recently announced that the university would match up to $1 million in donations for hurricane disaster relief.
“One of the main goals is to give hope to people who lost everything and get students out of their comfort zone to go and do something that might not be something they would normally do on a weekly basis,” said Kathy Joiner Chamber, LU Serve director of experiential education (CSER) and a team leader in Boone. “That is to be a light in a dark time and to give people some hope, cheer them up a little bit, and let them know that other people care about what they’re going through in such a terrible time of loss. It’s important to think outside yourself.”

“Being able to talk to the homeowners is really important,” sophomore Yanci Sanchez said after removing mold-covered objects from a homeowner’s basement. “Everyone is on the go, go, go, but (homeowners) are going through a lot. Just being a person that they can talk to and being a comfort for them is really important.”
While meeting the people’s physical needs undoubtedly plays a crucial role in helping them recover from this tragedy, Liberty University and Samaritan’s Purse heavily emphasize meeting the emotional and spiritual needs as well. Before conducting the day’s assignments, the group prays with residents to demonstrate the love of Christ to them. Sanchez noted that the group was also able to present one homeowner with a gift earlier in the week.
“Before and after we help the people here, we always pray,” freshman Nicolas Chism said. “It’s such an amazing experience to be able to witness their emotions. Prayer works, and that’s proof that it does. Talking with them about their experiences is amazing.”
Each day brings a new challenge for volunteers, so team members stay flexible and ready to meet whatever need arises. The team has been staying overnight at Alliance Bible Fellowship in Boone, N.C., and leaving from there early each morning to different job sites every day. At one location on Wednesday, students removed nails and debris from an elderly woman’s house to prepare for a contractor to come and rebuild the structure. The students also served another neighbor by cleaning out mold in his basement and disposing of ruined belongings.
As college students, Liberty’s team members are still expected to complete their school assignments while on the trip, so they worked ahead as much as possible and have been studying during their free time in the evenings.
“Having your heart ready to serve and being able to give up that time is really important,” Sanchez said. “For me personally, I prayed about it to see if this is what God really wanted me to do, and thankfully He gave me the opportunity. I worked ahead, tried to communicate with my professors as well, and here I am.”
In addition to blessing hurricane victims, the trip has also afforded students the chance to build lasting relationships with their peers, many of whom they did not know prior to being selected for the trip. Through eating meals together and serving side-by-side, the team is building friendships that will last much longer than the trip itself. Another way the team fosters community is through playing evening board games.
“It’s so awesome. As Christians, we were made to love each other, and personally, I can tell that we sincerely love each other and work so well together,” Chism said. “At night and in the morning, we play UNO! together. It’s such a small thing but it means so much. It creates family.”
Prior to the trip, students underwent training to help them best assist those they encounter. This training, along with the biblical instruction that students receive at Liberty, prepares them to effectively serve others. Chism, who noted that he became a Christian after attending this semester’s first Campus Community service, said his Liberty instruction provided him with the tools to share his faith with others.
“Serving is very important,” he said. “A college that prioritizes this is such an amazing thing. You don’t see (many) other colleges traveling across the country (to serve). Coming to Liberty and seeing that is amazing. I love it.”
Liberty has a longstanding reputation for community service, consistently partnering with humanitarian aid organizations during times of need. Past projects include assisting Ukrainian refugees in Romania, helping those affected by flooding in Kentucky, and cleaning up debris left behind by the devastating Hurricane Idalia that struck North Florida last year.
The LU Serve Now initiative provides multiple opportunities for students to travel across the country in response to natural disasters. Students interested in participating are encouraged to apply online.
“Go and (serve),” Chamber said. “Even if you are just on the fence, just go ahead and do it. I promise that you won’t regret doing it. This is something that will last a lifetime. Even after you are gone, the impact that we make and the Jesus that you leave behind (lasts). The main thing is to leave an impression on people and let them know that you are still going to be praying for them even after you leave the area.”

XVIII Airborne Corps remains trained and postured to respond to crises across the globe, whenever the nation calls. Our support to Joint Task Force-Civil Support (JTF-CS) led by
U.S. Army North overseeing the relief effort is no exception. Over 400 Soldiers have already left Fort Liberty, and more are scheduled to follow. They are working to integrate with the ongoing effort led by FEMA and the North Carolina Army National Guard.
Two Task Forces composed of XVIII Airborne Corps Soldiers have been formed and will fall under the command of the North Carolina Army National Guard Dual Status Commander. Task Force Castle consists of elements of 20th Engineer Brigade, 3rd Expeditionary Sustainment Command, 44th Medical Brigade, and 35th Corps Signal Brigade, and is led on the ground by Col. Sean Shields, commander, 20th Engineer Brigade. Task Force Aviation consists of elements from the 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division, and is led by Col. Khirsten Schwenn.
Equipment from Fort Liberty will provide several capabilities. For emergency route clearance, Task Force Castle will provide bulldozers, excavators, skid steers, and other engineer equipment. High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWVs) and Light Medium Tactical Vehicles (LMTVs) will provide high water trafficability, and Infantry Squad Vehicles (ISVs) will be used for troop movement. Additional assets include field ambulances, trailers, fuel/water tanks, chainsaws and tactical water purification systems.
CH-47 Chinook Helicopters from the 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade are flying to Western North Carolina and staging at Asheville Regional Airport. They are providing heavy lift capabilities and humanitarian aid delivery.

Up to 1,000 Fort Liberty soldiers are being deployed to western North Carolina to assist in recovery efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, per a request from Gov. Roy Cooper and approved Wednesday by President Joe Biden.
According to a press release from the governor’s office, the active-duty military personnel are joining over 1,000 N.C. National Guard soldiers “who are surging food, water, supplies and conducting search and rescue operations” in the region. Soldiers are expected in the impacted areas within the next day.
Across the Southeast, the storm left significant destruction and devastation with flash flooding and rising rivers in western North Carolina, and has left much of the region inaccessible by road. The death toll in Buncombe County has risen to 40 people, according to the Asheville Citizen Times.
The infantry battalion task force being deployed to western North Carolina is formed from the XVII Airborne Corps and includes members of the 82nd Airborne Division and other units on Fort Liberty. Included in the task force is a forward support company intended to bolster essential services in the state through support structures like fuel, water and mechanics, the governor’s office said.
The soldiers join others from the U.S. Department of Defense already on the ground supporting FEMA and other partner agencies in recovery and rescue operations, a DOD press release states.
“Employment of these Soldiers will provide additional manpower and logistics capabilities, enabling FEMA and other interagency partners to reach the hardest hit areas as quickly as possible,” Pentagon Press Secretary Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder said in a statement. “Their mission will include delivering support and commodities to impacted and isolated communities, assisting with supply point logistics at commodity staging locations, and removing debris from affected routes.”

A thousand soldiers from Fort Liberty will “immediately” be deployed to Western North Carolina as part of the response to Tropical Storm Helene, President Joe Biden announced Wednesday morning.
“These soldiers will speed up the delivery of life-saving supplies of food, water and medicine to isolated communities in North Carolina — they have the manpower and logistical capabilities to get this vital job done, and fast. They will join hundreds of North Carolina National Guard members deployed under State authorities in support of the response,” Biden said in a statement.
The soldiers headed to Western North Carolina are part of an infantry battalion task force, the White House said in a statement. Their unit includes a forward support company that can station key resources like fuel, water and mechanics in areas that are still without power or water nearly a week after the storm.
Soldiers will help with the delivery of key commodities like food and water, according to the White House. They will also help FEMA and other agencies participating in the response reach hard-hit areas that remain inaccessible due to catastrophic damage to the region’s roads and bridges from flooding and landslides.
Additionally, the Department of Defense will send 22 helicopters to help with search-and-rescue operations and “dozens” of high-water clearance vehicles.
The National Guard has activated more than 700 members to work on the delivery of supplies and to conduct search and rescue missions in the region. There were 15 aircraft and 275 vehicles involved in that mission as of Tuesday morning, according to a press release from Gov. Roy Cooper’s office.
At a Tuesday press conference, Cooper said he and Biden had recently discussed deploying troops to Western North Carolina to help with the relief effort, saying there was a particular focus on aircraft to help deliver supplies.
“I want to make sure we get every single resource that we possibly can into North Carolina for what may be a long haul to make sure that we’re continuing to get water and supplies all across Western North Carolina,” Cooper said.
Biden is scheduled to visit South Carolina and North Carolina on Wednesday, with the president expected to view storm-battered Western North Carolina from the air before receiving a briefing in Raleigh.
“Hurricane Helene has been a storm of historic proportion. My heart goes out to everyone who has experienced unthinkable loss. We are here for you — and we will stay here for as long as it takes,” Biden said in a statement.

FORT LIBERTY, N.C. – September is Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month. The U.S. Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School’s (SWCS) Family Programs team planned events to connect Soldiers and Families with available resources and education to recognize warning signs.
“While suicide is a year-round concern, we dedicate the month of September to bringing heightened awareness not just to the act but to the causes, as well,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Jacob Allison, command sergeant major of the Joint Special Operations Medical Training Center.
The year-round theme was emphasized often throughout the month.
“Any one of us can make a difference in someone’s life,” Allison said.
Suicide prevention and awareness is a Department of the Army program and an enduring command priority. Everyone plays an integral part in helping others in this fight.
“Suicide Awareness and Prevention Month is all about connecting with people and reminding them of the influential roles they play in each area of their lives, such as teammate, child, parent, sibling, and friend,” said Chaplain Lt. Col. Rob Belton, SWCS command chaplain. “It’s about reminding them that they matter, that we care about them, that they’re not alone.”
Belton added that “such words of encouragement can literally mean the difference between life and death. By taking the time to engage with those around us, by offering a listening ear and a kind word, we can be the voice of hope and the reminder that life is always worth living.”
Christin Chavez, director of SWCS Family Programs, emphasized team building, individual building, resiliency, and inclusiveness through several events.
Chavez elaborated on the reason for the activities.
“Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month activities and trainings are exactly how we change the culture and normalize conversations around depression and suicide,” she said. “If we’re not being proactive, we’re beholden to reactivity and, sometimes, that’s just too late.”
The SWCS Family Programs team works to support the SWCS command team to reinforce the message to normalize discussions about mental health and seeking help when Soldiers and/or Family Members need additional support.
“The goal of Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month is to identify available suicide mitigation resources, education, and training to empower use of these tools and reach out for help,” Chavez said.
A resource rodeo, showcasing prevention and resources and connecting individuals with mental health and crisis help, was a central part of the month’s events.
“The resources present covered various areas that often impact mental health or contribute to suicide risk, including physical, mental, spiritual, and self-care aspects including Military and Family Life counselors, Behavioral Health providers, chaplains, Sexual Harassment/ Assault Response and Prevention, Army Substance Abuse Program, Army Wellness Center, United Service Organization, Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers, Army Community Services programs and many more,” said Tanisha Sanchez Ogle, Family Programs representative for SWCS.
“The event aimed to gather resources that support suicide prevention and provide assistance to Soldiers and their Families,” said Sanchez Ogle. “We were pleased to see around 180 participants, including Soldiers, their Families, and civilians come together for this important cause.”
Allison reminded us that “Suicide is not something for someone else to solve. We all share responsibility at the individual, team, and leader levels to look out for one another, identify the signs, ask the tough questions, and ensure help is provided.”
