Timberlake is also the older brother of famous artist Bob Timberlake and the father of Cammy Timberlake, a championship tennis player who was the first Title IX woman’s scholarship athlete at Carolina.

The Timberlakes go back generations in Lexington, North Carolina, from where a half-dozen family members went to Chapel Hill and graduated. Tim Timberlake arrived in the fall of 1950, leaving his year-younger girlfriend and future wife, Anne “Teen” Redwine, back in Lexington.

“We dated in high school and then I went to Chapel Hill,” Tim recalled with a slight laugh. “We continued dating and the next year she went to Duke in the fall of 1951. She decided she didn’t want to be encumbered with me her first year in college.”

During Teen’s two years in Durham, they stayed in touch and eventually got back together. They were married in the summer of 1953, Teen transferred to Carolina to major in teacher education and the Timberlakes rented a two-bedroom apartment at 114 Hamilton Road in the heart of Glen Lennox.

“That was a good way to start married life and I remember it well,” Tim said. “It was a real laid-back atmosphere. We were the youngest folks in that whole area, and we grilled out on most Saturday nights. We had some older friends, who were working at the university or were in graduate school. There were some young children, and we ended up doing a lot of baby-sitting that year.”

During Tim’s years in Chapel Hill, younger brother Bob visited often and followed him into the Sigma Chi fraternity. Painting was a hobby at that time, and after graduation Bob joined his brother in the family gas company back in Lexington.

“He started drawing and painting when he was seven or eight, and all those early paintings would not give you an idea that he would become such an accomplished artist,” Tim said. “But our mother kept them all and years later he would have a few retrospective shows.”

In the late 1960s, Bob Timberlake saw an article and paintings of renowned artist Andrew Wyeth in LIFE Magazine; the brothers contacted Wyeth and they “wrangled” a meeting with him at his home in Pennsylvania.

“We took some of Bob’s work with us, and when Mr. Wyeth saw it he asked him what he was doing,” Tim said. “Bob said he was working at the gas company, and Mr. Wyeth said when you get home, resign and start painting full time.”

Bob began marketing his artwork through Hugh Morton, Jr., a Raleigh-based public relations and advertising agent whose family owned and ran Grandfather Mountain in Linville, where both Timberlake brothers eventually bought second homes.

Since then, Bob Timberlake has become one of America’s most beloved realist painters, specializing in water colors. He has a stretch of I-85 designated as the Bob Timberlake Freeway.

His first exhibition was a sold-out show in Winston-Salem in 1970. In 1973, he held the first of seven one-person exhibitions at Hammer Galleries in New York City. The first show was sold out before it opened, which had never happened before at that well-established gallery.

He later opened a second gallery in Blowing Rock, which in 2004 was renamed the Bob Timberlake Inn at Chetola Resort, and started a home furnishings line. Wyeth served as his mentor until Wyeth’s death in 2009 at 92.

The Timberlake family also owned the Land Company, which invested in real estate. They knew Glen Lennox owner Robert Lay Grubb, who was selling part of the apartment complex to finance building the Glen Lennox Shopping Center on route 54 – one of the state’s first shopping centers. Grubb’s son, Clay, is the Charlotte developer who is redeveloping much of the Glen Lennox property in a twenty-year project.

“Bob Grubb was a friend of ours,” Tim said. “Our family owned about 30 percent of the 140 units until Bob bought it back from us. We owned it for about 12 or 15 years.”

Tim Timberlake had spent two years in the service as a special investigator. He and Teen moved from base to base and wound up in Charlotte, where Tim worked for the Army Counter Intelligence Corps. After leaving the Army, they moved back to Lexington, where Tim ran the gas company until it was sold and he retired in 1995.

They now split time between Lexington and their home in the mountains.

Tim and Teen have five children, 11 grandchildren and six great grandchildren with another on the way in February. Their oldest daughter, Cammy, started playing tennis as child and developed into a ranked player in North Carolina. By the time she was 18, she had won five state championships in various age groups.

“About that time, we got a call from the athletic department at UNC,” Tim said. “Title IX had surfaced, and they were looking for a female they could award a scholarship to because they had to start treating females like they did male athletes. She enrolled in 1974 and graduated in 1978. We went back often to see her play.”

The couple who started their life together at Glen Lennox celebrated their 65^th wedding anniversary this year.

Aside from your classmates, what was the key part of the school’s MBA programming that led you to choose this business school and why was it so important to you? I chose UNC Kenan-Flagler for its sense of community and belonging, something I know and understand well having already spent four years in Chapel Hill. Carolina is first and foremost “the university of the people” and I believe the students and faculty adapt and evolve to support the needs of the community.

The strong sense of support and network was evident last fall when I attended the Carolina Women in Business (CWIB) Conference. The students I met, the faculty who took the time to speak with me, and the alumnae who seemed genuinely invested in our success further solidified UNC Kenan-Flagler as my top choice. Early in the day I knew that I wanted to be an MBA alumna who is asked to come back and share my story, my triumphs and even my failures for CWIB events.

What quality best describes your MBA classmates and why? All the classmates I have met so far – virtually – have been supportive and engaging. We are in such an uncertain, unnerving, and unprecedented time with the pandemic changing everyone’s plans. Across all channels in which our class is meeting for the first time and interacting – in some cases states and countries apart from one another – people are connecting to offer support in any way possible. They are hosting virtual meet-and-greets, carrying on conversations to better get to know each other, and planning socially-distanced gatherings. The “we are in this together, and we are here for one another” mentality is why I chose UNC Kenan-Flagler.

What club or activity excites you most at this school? I am most looking forward to joining Carolina Women in Business (CWIB) as well as working with one of my mentors, Beth Struckell (MBA ’82), on the 100 Women initiative. I care deeply about gender parity in the workplace and seeing more deserving women promoted to leadership roles across all industries and especially in my own.

Describe your biggest accomplishment in your career so far: I was asked to assume responsibility for our company’s largest project with a high-profile client and manage it to completion. Through this project I fostered relationships with and learned from multiple mentors in the industry who graciously shared their experience and expertise with me. From developing design proposals to a successful installation, I learned more about my management strengths, resourcefulness, and natural creative instinct by leading this project than I would have if I had not stepped up and out of my comfort zone.

What led you to pursue an MBA at this point in your career? I’ve had countless conversations over the last few years with respected executives and leaders in my industry who all agree there should be more women in executive roles in the home furnishings industry. I’ve spoken with many women who all agree promotions reward traditional business backgrounds over industry experience, and still favor men. The women I’ve talked with have all hit allegedly “non-existent” glass ceilings in their careers at one point or another, and many agreed that an MBA is the best means to break through it.

What other MBA programs did you apply to? Vanderbilt and NYU

What was the most challenging question you were asked during the admissions process? The admissions process for UNC Kenan-Flagler was pleasantly straightforward and conversational, so I would like to highlight a question I appreciated rather than found challenging. I was asked if there was anything I felt the admissions team could improve upon in the process and, if so, how. I suggested, and actually submitted, that they offer an optional, creative opportunity in which the applicant could upload a visual, video, or portfolio that allows the admissions team to more clearly see, literally, who the applicant is and wishes to be.

How did you determine your fit at various schools? When determining my fit at various schools, I first asked myself three questions: Can I see myself here? How will the school support my unique career goals? How will the school, faculty, student body and location contribute to my experience as I continue to build upon my career? Then I asked the students, faculty, and admissions team the same questions to see which aligned.

What was your defining moment and how did it prepare you for business school? Following graduation from Carolina undergrad, I traveled for a few months before beginning my job search. After a month of applying, interviewing, and receiving job offers, I realized that although these opportunities appeared to be smart and reliable paths, my heart genuinely was not invested in any of these calculable career paths. I decided to pursue my profound love of art, furniture and design. My defining moment was choosing to follow my heart, to join our family business and learn from my grandfather, Bob Timberlake, an American Home Furnishings Hall of Fame Inductee.

By my count, Justin Timberlake’s stop at Spectrum Center in Charlotte was Show No. 80 on his mega-millions-grossing “Man of the Woods” tour, which has found its way to nearly every corner of North America and Europe since launching nearly 10 months ago.

This would suggest, to me, that at this point the concert should be as well-oiled a touring machine as any currently on the road — every hair atop the headliner’s head in exactly the right place, every note from his 11-piece band and his three backup singers reverberating in optimal pitch, every hip-hop-inspired dance move sharp as the tip of an X-acto.

But while Tuesday night’s headlining set by Timberlake was a big, bold, colorfully laser-lit and creative ride spanning nearly two hours, it wasn’t quite perfect. Here are a random collection of observations about and reflections on the first major Charlotte concert of 2019.

1. He made good use of the expansive space he had to work with. Measuring somewhere in the neighborhood of 150 feet in length, an elaborate catwalk snaked out from the main stage in an S shape, dipping low at first, then rising high in the center; it was flanked at two points by clusters of three fake trees (a nod to the “Woods” of his tour and album titles) and continued on to the opposite end of the arena, with the last section a high-tech extension that lit up and could sprout 18-inch blades of fake grass on command — as it did during “Man of the Woods” and 2007’s “Until the End of Time.” He spent more than half of the show rubbing his rhythm and his fantastic footwork in fans’ faces on the catwalk, but I was still surprised how often he stuck to the main stage, since his performance (and the crowd) felt more alive when he was roaming.

2. He could have gotten started earlier. Because the stage setup was so complicated, it needed to be done early and then not messed with; as a result, Toronto singer-songwriter Francesco Yates (who feels like Canada’s answer to Bruno Mars) actually got to do his opening set on the headliner’s finished stage. But once Yates finished, stagehands had virtually nothing to break down or put in place to get ready for Timberlake, so it seemed silly to have to wait another half-hour for him to emerge, especially since it’s not like he was running late to the arena from the airport or something (he’d been in town for at least 24 hours already — he patronized Midwood Smokehouse in Charlotte yesterday afternoon). Timberlake didn’t get going until after 9:20, and it was immediately clear that he was going to have a difficult time squeezing his full set list in before 11. Yet he initially took his time, lengthening already-long tracks with significant dance breaks. An hour in, he made a good cut for time by dropping an oft-included section of the show that sees his backup singers moving to the front for covers, but then seemed to rush through abbreviated versions of fan favorites like “Rock Your Body” and “What Goes Around... Comes Around” as 11 neared. Eighty shows in, his pacing should be much more evened out than that.

3. There’s not much I can say about his dancing that hasn’t already been said, but yes, absolutely: It’s a heck of a lot of fun to watch. Whether J.T. was showing up his backup dancers during a choreographed bit during opening number “Filthy,” or doing a smoothed-out partner dance with his it-wobbles-but-it-won’t-fall-down microphone stand during “Suit & Tie,” or throwing in two beats of twerking here or a couple beats of the shoot dance there to get some laughs, he was mesmerizing. Perhaps the dance highlight of the night, though, was the one he did with his hands to get “My Love” spinning in the right direction with a mixing machine.

4. Who knew he was so capable with one of those, by the way? Or that he could play the acoustic guitar so well? His strumming on an excellent stripped-down version of “Drink You Away” pushed the track even closer into the gospel-funk realm, and he showed even more restraint in plucking out notes for his reinvention of “What Goes Around... Comes Around,” giving it an almost dream-like quality. Oh, and as if that weren’t enough, he played a pretty bueno set of keys on “Señorita”...

5. It’s a shame Timberlake felt obligated to rely so heavily on his “Man of the Woods” album, which doesn’t have the pop (literally or figuratively) of his three previous albums. But amid the eight new songs scattered throughout the setlist were all the essentials his longtime fans could ask for: 11 of his 13 top-10 hits, from “SexyBack” to “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” — with the only two missing being “Not a Bad Thing” (off of 2013’s “The 20/20 Experience – 2 of 2”) and “Love Never Felt So Good” (off of Michael Jackson’s posthumous “Xscape” album).

6. Sports-celebrity sightings! I shook hands with seven-time NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson in the Will Call line before getting my tickets, then spotted Carolina Panthers tight end Greg Olsen posing for pictures with fans one section over from mine before the show. (A Cody Zeller sighting would have rounded things out nicely, but the Charlotte Hornets were busy losing to the Clippers out in Los Angeles Tuesday night.)

7. Meanwhile, the Petey Pablo cameo was cool, but I’m not sure I totally got it. The North Carolina native did a little bit of rapping as he shared the stage with DJ Freestyle Steve between Yates and Timberlake’s sets, then promised the crowd that 2019 was going to be a big year for him. During the headlining set, Timberlake at one point gave a shout-out to Pablo (known for his contribution to Ciara’s 2004 chart-topper “Goodies” and his own hit from the same year, “Freek-a-Leek”) by saying “I know we don’t look the same. We’re the same on the inside.” But I don’t think the average J.T. fan understands their connection or what makes it so strong, and a Google search won’t shed much light.

8. “Cry Me a River” felt like a grand finale. As the 10th of the night’s 21 songs started, smoke billowed from fog machines and quickly covered every inch of the long catwalk, and as it ended, a crescendo of guitars and drums and horns turned the song into a rock anthem that had 17,000 fans screaming. It would have been a perfect way to send the crowd home. So, too, would have the next song — “Mirrors,” which ended with Timberlake standing alone at center stage surrounded by cheers as he dropped to his knees, bowed to the crowd and pounded on the ground. “Thank you, Charlotte. Thank you. I love you.” The friend I was with turned to me, looking puzzled, and asked, “It’s not over, is it?” The actual finale came an hour later, in the form of “Can’t Stop the Feeling!,” and left me wishing he’d put that song in the middle and instead ended with “Cry Me a River,” or “Mirrors.”

Why not “Can’t Stop the Feeling!”? I don’t know, I just would have preferred not to go out on that one. I mean, it took months to get it out of my head. Now it’s back in there, and I’m once again having trouble getting it out.

Pretty enough to paint. That’s how artist Bob Timberlake described the scene of the Davison County farm he captured in his recent release “Sheets Farm.”

The painting captures a winter’s morning with snow on the ground, geese in flight and cows looking for something to eat outside the barn.

Timberlake his gazed upon Sheets Farm for decades when his studio was across from it along N.C. Highway 47.

“I have admired that farm for years,” he said. “I have drawn it and painted it other times but never released any of them until now.”

Hundreds of rural countryside scenes from Timberlake’s home county clutter Timberlake’s brain. Several of the images of its landscape and its people have been the focus of his more than 50-year career in painting.

From “Mr. Garrison’s Slab Pile” depicting the home and collection of fire burning wood at Garrison’s farmhouse on Hunt Road to “Gilly’s House” near Timberlake’s former Riverwood Studio that featured a star quilt hanging on the porch and a hound dog resting nearby,” Davidson County places have often won over the painter’s eye and imagination.

Davidson County’s back country has been introduced to art lovers across the world through his exhibitions.

“I have been blessed to have grown up with many scenes like this all around me,” he wrote in explaining his “Sheets Farm” painting. “I have spent 86 years taking mental pictures of this and that. It’s the common things around us that we sometimes don’t pay enough attention to. This painting is my mind’s eye of my neighbor, Mrs. Sheets, just down the rod from my studio.”

Sheets Farm is over 100 years old. Mary Ruth Sheets and her husband, Bill, raised their family of four and tended the farm. Mary Ruth held thousands of farm tours over the years, with more than 10,000 school children learning about N.C.’s agricultural history and where their food comes.

“This area is my territory,” Timberlake explained of the two-lane Highway 47 area and Highway 8 leading to Southmont. “That’s where I roamed when I was a child. I was 14 years old when I first remember driving by where my studio was later located. I thought then, ‘I would like to have this place and land one day.’ ”

Mary Ruth Sheets said it was an honor to have Timberlake use her family’s farm as a subject for a painting.

“Bob has created many great painting,” she said. “I am humbled to have my barnyard included. From 1972-2005, that barnyard was the classroom for thousands of school children to learn from me. ... I shared that the farmer grew what they eat and wear. They saw veggies, wool from sheep, cotton, a cow being milked, butter being made and the usual animals on a farm A painting like this can serve as a reminder how important the farmer is to all people.”

Bill Sheet’s father, Bob Sheets, established the farm in 1907. It’s still a working farm today.

Timberlake explained he may not be finished with Sheets Farm as a subject for his paintings.

“I could see it from the studio,” he explained. “When the sun is going down in October, that white house with all the green around it just glows like a gem. I’m a barn nut. That’s why I painted the barns. When I worked from my studio, I could hear all that was going on over there with the cows. I remember the geese flying over that barn.”

Since the release of the painting, Timberlake said, he has heard from several family members who appreciated him capturing the Davidson County landmark and their family history.

His latest release is titled “Turkey Feather.” It depicts a turkey’s tail feather that Timberlake found in the a grassy area outside the Speas’ place just west of Timberlake’s Restaurant at The Chetola Resort in Blowing Rock.

TIMBERLAKE, North Carolina (WTVD) -- Do you put pictures of your kids, pets, or adventures on social media? If you do, be careful as you never know who is watching.

Melina Efthimiadis along with her husband wanted to add personal umbrella liability insurance to their Nationwide homeowner's policy. She says they have been low risk clients so she didn't think it would be a problem. In the application process for Nationwide, Melina says they had to write down the number of dogs they owned and their breeds, which are Shih Tzu/ Yorkie, a Hound and Hound/Lab mix. Melina says they waited for approval, but instead got a cancellation letter from Nationwide. She says the reason, "We were being cancelled because we had an ineligible dog breed that we failed to disclose."

Nationwide claimed Melina had a potentially dangerous Rottweiler mix breed, which Nationwide considers that breed to be ineligible. Melina says she was told by Nationwide how they made that decision.

"They sent us the pictures that they had taken off of my Facebook page of my dog Zeus who is a lab/hound mix. In the picture, the dogs are running through the snow with their blankets on it just didn't seem that threatening to me," she said.

Melina called Nationwide to tell them they were wrong about Zeus' breed.

"They said that I would have to have a letter written by my veterinarian," she said.

That's not a problem for Melina as she actually is a veterinarian.

"Really, this is not something that can be proven just by looking at pictures," she added.

After confirming Zeus was not an ineligible breed, Nationwide rescinded the cancellation.

"Nationwide's policy is to contact the member and agent to gather more information if there is uncertainty about a dog breed selection on an insurance application. Unfortunately, that policy was not followed in this instance. We have taken steps to rectify the situation to ensure a better experience for future Nationwide applicants," a rep said.

Melina was happy Nationwide reversed their decision, but she did decide to go with another insurance company after this experience. She says this experience has also changed what she posts on social media.

"Be careful about what you post on Facebook. It's sad that you can't post pictures of your beloved pet on your own Facebook page and have it public but unfortunately I had to go and change some of my pictures just to feel more comfortable about it," she said.

Insurance companies aren't the only businesses that look at social media pages. Over the years, we've reported on employers, and even government agencies, checking up on us. You need to make sure that what your post on social media, you are OK with more than just your friends possibly seeing it. You can change your privacy setting on Facebook and Instagram to limit who can see what you post.
