MIDDLE RIVER, MD—Baltimore County is set to expand its green space offerings with the acquisition of a one-acre parcel of prime waterfront land in Middle River from aerospace and defense giant Lockheed Martin. County Executive Kathy Klausmeier announced the purchase, secured for the symbolic price of just $1.
The newly acquired property, located at 700 Wilson Point Rd. and adjacent to Martin State Airport, will be transformed into a pocket park—a small, public space designated for passive use. The Baltimore County Department of Recreation and Parks will spearhead the conversion, which will include a community engagement process to shape the park’s design.
County Executive Klausmeier lauded the agreement as a continuation of efforts to enhance community amenities. “Community parks are anchors for residents everywhere, and this agreement continues our work to provide more recreational and green spaces for our residents,” Klausmeier said. “Lockheed Martin’s generous offer gives us the opportunity to expand quality-of-life improvement efforts in our neighborhoods, and I know this park will be enjoyed by families for generations to come.”
A Scenic Site with Historic Ties
The grass-covered site is an ideal location for a pocket park. It overlooks Dark Head Cove and is free of permanent structures, making it ready for conversion. Importantly, the property has undergone necessary environmental remediation and has been certified clean for recreational use. The official transfer of the property to Baltimore County took place on Friday, October 31, 2025.
Stephanie C. Hill, president of Lockheed Martin Rotary and Mission Systems and a Baltimore native, expressed pride in the donation. “We’re proud to support Baltimore County by donating this scenic property to the community, a contribution that reflects our shared commitment to preserving Middle River’s natural beauty and honoring the region’s rich history in aerospace and manufacturing,” Hill stated.
Baltimore County Councilman David Marks, whose district includes the property, praised the administration’s success in completing what he described as a “complex transaction over many years.”
“Not only is this a beautiful part of Baltimore County, but we have every right to be proud of the role this community has played in the aviation history of the United States,” Councilman Marks added, acknowledging the region’s heritage.
Continuing Green Space Expansion
The acquisition of the Middle River property is the latest project in the County’s ongoing initiative to provide more park and recreation opportunities for families. This includes a robust focus on Eastern Baltimore County, which has seen several recent and planned developments:
The new pocket park on Wilson Point Road is expected to become a tranquil community asset, with design and planning details to be developed following public input.
