Nicholas Theodore, MD, MS, a nationally recognized expert in brain and spinal cord injury has joined the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix as chair of the .
Dr. Theodore, who also serves as physician executive of the Neurosciences Service Line at Banner, assumed the role Oct. 1.
Also acknowledged as a leader in minimally invasive spine surgeries and robotics, Dr. Theodore arrives in Phoenix after serving as the director of the Johns Hopkins Neurosurgical Spine Center in Baltimore.
“Dr. Theodore has led a long and distinguished career. His appointment as chair of the Department of Neurosurgery at Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix will propel the college’s research mission and further establish our campus as a premier institution in the field of neurosciences,” said , dean of the U of A College of Medicine – Phoenix.
A graduate of Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C., Dr. Theodore completed both a residency in neurosurgery and a fellowship in spinal surgery at Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix in 2001. Following his fellowship training, he served in the U.S. Navy. He returned to Barrow and ultimately became director of the neurotrauma and spine programs. He left Phoenix after being recruited to Johns Hopkins in 2016 as a professor of neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery and biomedical engineering.

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in the US and Phoenix SENOLYTIX have announced a worldwide cross-licensing agreement to advance the progress of inducible switch technologies for cell and gene therapy applications.
Phoenix will be supplied with the therapeutic agent, rimiducid, by MD Anderson and will receive assistance in obtaining regulatory clearance for a new formulation administered through intramuscular or subcutaneous injection, as an alternative to the conventional intravenous infusion.
In exchange, MD Anderson will have exclusive access to the new rimiducid formulation to be used with its switch technologies within its cell therapy platforms.
Rimiducid will initiate these technologies, which include the CaspaCIDe safety switch and the GoDCVaX, GoTCR, GoCAR-T and Dual Switch technologies that MD Anderson has acquired from Bellicum Pharmaceuticals.
Along with rimiducid, are employed as a safeguard to control the activation of cell and gene therapies.
The CaspaCIDe safety switch has been incorporated by the Institute for Cell Therapy Discovery & Innovation researchers at MD Anderson into a variety of cell therapy initiatives, notably in chimeric antigen receptor natural killer cell therapies.
The institution offered non-exclusive licences for the inducible switch technologies to biopharma companies and other academic entities.
David Spencer, co-founder and chief tech officer of Phoenix and Bellicum’s scientific founder. originally developed the CaspaCIDe technology.
The ApoptiCIDe platform, representing an advancement of the original technology, has been developed by Phoenix to be compatible with the new formulation of rimiducid.

MD Anderson Cancer Center and Phoenix SENOLYTIX have entered a cross-licensing agreement to advance inducible switch technologies used in cell and gene therapies.
Under the terms of the collaboration, Phoenix will procure rimiducid from MD Anderson and support for regulatory approval of a new injectable formulation.
In exchange, MD Anderson gains exclusive rights to Phoenix’s new formulation of rimiducid for its ex vivo cell therapy platforms.
Rimiducid plays a crucial role in activating safety switch technologies, including those acquired by MD Anderson from Bellicum Pharmaceuticals.
The switches are essential for regulating cell and gene therapy activities.
The partnership aims to enhance the cell therapies by integrating Phoenix’s in-house ApoptiCIDe platform with the new rimiducid formulation.
MD Anderson vice president and Institute for Cell Therapy Discovery & Innovation head, stem cell transplantation and cellular therapy professor Katy Rezvani said: “While we have had very promising safety results with our engineered cell therapies, it is critical that we include effective technologies to rapidly eliminate transduced cells in the event of treatment-related toxicities.

The ApoptiCIDe platform, which is designed for targeted cell elimination in ageing and obesity-related disorders, builds on technologies developed by David Spencer.
The platform now incorporates the new rimiducid formulation, offering potential advancements in both cell and gene therapies.
The agreement also includes forming a scientific advisory board to guide the development of the advanced technologies.
The board will include members from both organisations, including Spencer, Daniel Jasinski, and Kevin Slawin from Phoenix and Katy Rezvani from MD Anderson.
The collaboration is expected to further enhance MD Anderson’s cell therapy programs and Phoenix’s gene therapy innovations.

Under the terms of the agreement, Phoenix will receive a supply of rimiducid from MD Anderson and support for seeking regulatory approval of a new proprietary formulation that can be delivered via intramuscular or subcutaneous (IM/SC) injection as opposed to intravenous infusion. MD Anderson receives exclusive rights to Phoenix’s new formulation of rimiducid for use with its inducible switch technologies in its cell therapy platforms.
Rimiducid is a therapeutic agent used to activate inducible switch technologies, including the CaspaCIDe (inducible caspase-9, iCasp9, or iC9) safety switch as well as GoCAR-T, GoTCR, GoDCVaX and Dual Switch technologies acquired by MD Anderson from Bellicum Pharmaceuticals. The switches and rimiducid can be used as a safety feature to regulate the activity of cell and gene therapies.

The institution has also made the inducible switch technologies available via non-exclusive licenses to other academic institutions and biopharmaceutical companies.
The CaspaCIDe technology was originally developed by David Spencer, Ph.D., a co-founder of Phoenix who served as the scientific founder of Bellicum. Phoenix has now developed its proprietary ApoptiCIDe platform, an evolution of the original technology specifically designed to work with the new rimiducid formulation. The platform is capable of being incorporated into both cell and gene therapies, and Phoenix has utilized this technology for its lead products, which are designed to accomplish purposeful in vivo elimination of targeted cell populations in aging and obesity-related disorders.
