The Chancellor hosted a reception on Monday (11 November) attended by Formara Print and Marketing’s managing director Andy Pond, to celebrate, and reassure, small and medium sized businesses.
MPs, business owners and CEOs from the South East and Eastern regions were brought together at 11 Downing Street to discuss support for entrepreneurship and innovation.
Pond was invited to the reception by the MP for Southend West and Leigh, David Burton-Sampson, following his visit to the Southend-on-Sea printer in October.
During the Downing Street event, Chancellor Rachel Reeves sought to reassure SME’s that they were “still the lifeblood of the country”, according to Pond.
Pond commented: “Her message to us was that this autumn statement is going to be very different to the previous one, and that she wants to put more money in people’s pockets.”
Each guest had an opportunity to speak with Reeves, who was open to businesses “getting their point across”, Pond said.
Reflecting on the major topics of conversation, Pond said: “National Insurance contribution for employers was a key consideration and taxes in general on SMEs. How our costs have gone up over the years and it's becoming more and more difficult to pass those costs on to the customer.”
Speaking with other regional businesses, Pond noted shared struggles, but also a sense of optimism looking ahead.
He said: “The people that I spoke to were all of a similar sort of mindset, that business is tough at the moment. It's very up and down and a bit erratic, and this is across a real wide range of sectors.
“But there was positivity, I think innovation is key going forward and I think most of the businesses that were there have some sort of innovation up their sleeve within their marketplace, and I think that's going to be key to continuing and driving business forward.”

Business leaders across a range of industries attended the event, including restaurants, gyms, pubs and manufacturers.
“I think we were probably the only printer in the room,” noted Pond, who added that attending the reception was “a true honour”, and that he was “grateful to be able to put the print industry on the map a little bit at these sort of events.”
