Home Care Abbeville, SC

They say that your golden years are the best years of your life. For most older Americans, that's how it should be - a time to relax, reflect, and live life in a familiar place. After all, senior citizens in the U.S. have worked tirelessly to build a better economy, serve their communities, and raise families.

However, as seniors grow older, completing daily tasks like showering and enjoying activities such as visiting the historic McGowan-Bundy-Barksdale House gets harder without someone by their side. Unfortunately, many older Americans aren't able to rely on their adult children for help. The reality in today's world is that family members do not have the skills or time to dedicate to caring for their parents. That's where Always Best Care Senior Services comes in.

Our in-home care services are for people who prefer to stay at home as they grow older but need ongoing care that family or friends cannot provide. More and more older adults prefer to live far away from long-term, institutionalized facilities and closer to the place where they feel most comfortable - their home. Home care in Abbeville, SC is a safe, effective way to give your loved ones the care they need when they need it the most.

“Always best care was my very first home health job coming out of high school and it has truly been a experience for me. I did leave to explore and find my way in the world however in 2020 I gotten the opportunity to come back with open arms and I couldn't pass it up. This company works hard to help employees and clients. The owner miss Beth is a strong independent women that gets the job done and will help anyone that needs it. She has seen things in me that I hasn't been able to see in my self, and that is why this will be my forever employment. If you want to work somewhere where communication is key in this business, a business that cares about you and wants to see you move up in the world you need to come and work for this company. I am not just saying that because I work there now. I am saying this because I have a job that enjoy going to work each and everyday.”

“When I left my old company and went to a new one being the same thing I was, a caregiver, I was nervous. I wasn't treated the best or appreciated at all at the old company so I figured this one would be the same way but boy was I wrong. I work for a company that appreciates me and is willing to work with me through any situation so we are all on the same page. They respect me as their employee, a mother and just a person in general. Yesterday when I went to the office to pick up my check, I was given an award. The boss of our company chose ME as "Employee of the Month of September". Talking about feeling appreciated, I've only been working for them for 4 months. I cannot thank Always Best Care enough for choosing me and believing in me and my work. It's not always easy but it's worth it!????”

What is Non-Medical Senior Care in Abbeville, SC?

lm-check

Home is where the heart is. While that saying can sound a tad cliche, it is especially true for many seniors living in America. When given a choice, older adults most often prefer to grow older at home. An AARP study found that three out of four adults over the age of 50 want to stay in their homes and communities as they age.

lm-check

When you begin to think about why, it makes sense. Home offers a sense of security, comfort, and familiarity.

lm-check

The truth is, as we age, we begin to rely on others for help. When a family is too busy or lives too far away to fulfill this role, in-home senior care is often the best solution. Home care services allow seniors to enjoy personal independence while also receiving trustworthy assistance from a trained caregiver.

lm-check

At Always Best Care, we offer a comprehensive range of home care services to help seniors stay healthy while they get the help they need to remain independent. As your senior loved one gets older, giving them the gift of senior care is one of the best ways to show your love, even if you live far away.

Respite Care

Respite Care Services

According to AARP, more than 53 million adults living in the U.S. provide care to someone over 50 years old. Unfortunately, these caregivers experience stress, exhaustion, and even depression. Our respite care services help family caregivers address urgent obligations, spend time with their children, and enjoy nearby activities. Perhaps more importantly, respite care gives family members time to recharge and regroup. Taking personal time to de-stress reduces the risk of caregiver burnout. So, if you've always wanted to eat at the local Food For The Soul or visit Burt-Stark Mansion, don't feel bad. Doing so is great for both you and your loved one.

At the end of the day, our goal is to become a valuable part of your senior's daily routine. That way, we may help give them the highest quality of life possible. We know that staying at home is important for your loved one, and we are here to help make sure that is possible.

If you have been on the fence about non-medical home care, there has never been a better time than now to give your senior the care, assistance, and companionship they deserve.

Aging in Place: The Preferred Choice for Most Seniors

While it's true that some seniors have complicated medical needs that prevent them from staying at home, aging in place is often the best arrangement for seniors and their families. With a trusted caregiver, seniors have the opportunity to live with a sense of dignity and do so as they see fit - something that is unavailable to many older people today.

In-home care makes it possible for millions of seniors to age in place every year. Rather than moving to a strange nursing home, seniors have the chance to stay at home where they feel the happiest and most comfortable.

Here are just a few of the reasons why older men and women prefer to age at home:

How much does a senior's home truly mean to them?

A study published by the American Society on Aging found that more than half of seniors say their home's emotional value means more than how much their home is worth in monetary value. It stands to reason, then, that a senior's home is where they want to grow old.

With the help of elderly care in Abbeville, SC, seniors don't have to age in a sterilized care facility. Instead, they can age gracefully in the place they want to be most: their home. In contrast, seniors who move to a long-term care facility must adapt to new environments, new people, and new systems that the facility implements. At this stage in life, this kind of drastic change can be more harmful than helpful.

Institutional care facilities like nursing homes often put large groups of people together to live in one location. On any given day, dozens of staff members and caregivers run in and out of these facilities. Being around so many new people in a relatively small living environment can be dangerous for a seniors' health and wellbeing. When you consider that thousands of seniors passed away in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, opting for in-home care is often a safer, healthier choice for seniors.

Aging in place has been shown to improve seniors' quality of life, which helps boost physical health and also helps insulate them from viral and bacterial risks found in elderly living facilities.

For many seniors, the ability to live independently with assistance from a caregiver is a priceless option. With in-home care, seniors experience a higher level of independence and freedom - much more so than in other settings like a nursing home. When a senior has the chance to age in place, they get to live life on their own terms, inside the house that they helped make into a home. More independence means more control over their personal lives, too, which leads to increased levels of fulfillment, happiness, and personal gratification. Over time, these positive feelings can manifest into a healthier, longer life.

More independence, a healthier life, and increased comfort are only a few benefits of aging in place. You have to take into consideration the role of cost and convenience. Simply put, it's usually easier and more affordable to help seniors age in place than it is to move them into an institutional care facility. According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, seniors who age in the comfort of their homes can save thousands of dollars per month.

In-home care services from Always Best Care, for instance, are often less expensive than long-term solutions, which can cost upwards of six figures per year. To make matters worse, many residential care facilities are reluctant to accept long-term care insurance and other types of payment assistance.

With Always Best Care's home care services, seniors and their families have a greater level of control over their care plans. In-home care gives seniors the chance to form a bond with a trusted caregiver and also receive unmatched care that is catered to their needs. In long-term care facilities, seniors and their loved ones have much less control over their care plan and have less of a say in who provides their care.

 Elderly Care Abbeville, SC

Affordable Care

In-home care is a valuable resource that empowers seniors to age in place on their own terms. However, a big concern for many families and their loved ones is how much in-home care costs. If you're worried that in-home care is too expensive, you may be pleasantly surprised to learn that it is one of the most affordable senior care arrangements available.

Typically, hiring an Always Best Care in-home caregiver for a few hours a week is more affordable than sending your loved one to a long-term care facility. This is true even for seniors with more complex care needs.

At Always Best Care, we will work closely with you and your family to develop a Care Plan that not only meets your care needs, but your budget requirements, too. Once we discover the level of care that you or your senior need, we develop an in-home care plan that you can afford.

In addition to our flexible care options, families should also consider the following resources to help offset potential home care costs:

If your loved one qualifies, Medicaid may help reduce in-home care costs. Review your SC's Medicaid program laws and benefits, and make sure your senior's financial and medical needs meet Medicaid eligibility requirements.
Attendance and aid benefits through military service can cover a portion of the costs associated with in-home care for veterans and their spouses.
Many senior care services like in-home care are included in long-term care insurance options. Research different long-term care solutions to find a plan that provides coverage for senior care.
Home care can be included as part of a senior's private insurance plan. Read over your loved one's insurance policy carefully or speak with their insurance provider to determine if in-home care is covered.
Depending on the life insurance plan, you may be able to apply your policy toward long-term care. You may be able to use long-term-care coverage to help pay for in-home elderly care.
 Senior Care Abbeville, SC

Compassionate Care. Trusted Caregivers.

When you or your senior loved one needs assistance managing daily tasks at home, finding a qualified caregiver can be challenging. It takes a special kind of person to provide reliable care for your senior loved one. However, a caregiver's role involves more than meal preparation and medication reminders. Many seniors rely on their caregivers for companionship, too.

Our companion care services give seniors the chance to socialize in a safe environment and engage in activities at home. These important efforts boost morale and provide much-needed relief from repetitive daily routines. A one-on-one, engaging conversation can sharpen seniors' minds and give them something in which to be excited.

At Always Best Care, we only hire care providers that we would trust to care for our own loved ones. Our senior caregivers in Abbeville, SC understand how important it is to listen and communicate with their seniors. A seemingly small interaction, like a short hug goodbye, can make a major difference in a senior's day. Instead of battling against feelings of isolation, seniors begin to look forward to seeing their caregiver each week.

Understanding the nuances of senior care is just one of the reasons why our care providers are so great at their job.

Unlike some senior care companies, our caregivers must undergo extensive training before they work for Always Best Care. In addition, our caregivers receive ongoing training throughout the year. This training ensures that their standard of care matches up to the high standards we've come to expect. During this training, they will brush up on their communication skills, safety awareness, and symptom spotting. That way, your loved one receives the highest level of non-medical home care from day one.

Assisted Living Referral Services

While it's true that many seniors prefer to age at home, sometimes in-home care isn't the best fit. For those seniors and their families, choosing an assisted living facility makes more sense. Unfortunately, finding the optimal care facility is easier said than done in today's day and age. That's when Always Best Care's assisted living referral services begin to make a lot of sense.

Assisted living is a form of housing intended for seniors who require varying degrees of medical and personal attention. Accommodations may include single rooms, apartments, or shared living arrangements. Assisted living communities are typically designed to resemble a home-like environment and are physically constructed to encourage the independence of residents.

Respite Care Abbeville, SC

At assisted living communities, seniors receive help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and eating. They may also benefit from coordination of services with outside healthcare providers, and monitoring of resident activities to ensure their health, safety, and well-being. Caregivers who work at assisted living communities can also provide medication administration and personal care services for older adults.

Other services offered within assisted living communities can include some or all of the following:

  • Housekeeping
  • Laundry
  • Recreational Activities
  • Social Outings
  • Emergency Medical Response
  • Medication Monitoring
  • Family Visitation
  • Personal Care
 Caregivers Abbeville, SC

At Always Best Care, our representatives can match your senior's emotional, physical, and financial needs with viable assisted living communities nearby. Results are based on comparative data, so you can select the best choice for you or your loved one.

Always Best Care works closely with local senior living communities to gain valuable knowledge that we then use to help seniors and their loved ones make informed decisions. This information can include basic care and rent, resident availability, and services provided. Because Always Best Care is compensated by these communities, we provide senior living referral services at no extra cost to you.

Some of the most popular assisted living communities to consider in our area include the following:

  • Abbeville Residential Care
  • Abbeville Nursing Home
  • Abbeville Senior Center
  • Shady Pines Estate
  • Glen Eagle Healthcare & Rehab
  • Faith Home of Abbeville

American Leadership Academy and Abbeville won their appeals Friday before the S.C. High School League’s appellate panel and will move down in classification.

The panel voted 7-0 for ALA to go from Class 3A to 2A and 4-3 for Abbeville to drop from Class 2A to A for the 2024-26 realignment. It will be the first time since 2010-11 that Abbeville will be in Class A, the state’s smallest classification.

Friday’s decisions wrapped up a week’s worth of appeals and locked in the five new-look classifications for S.C. high school athletics for the 2024-26 school years. Teams will next be group into regions by early February.

“We were happy with the decision obviously,” ALA athletic director Ray Canady told The State. “Considering the facts, we are brand new with limited number of athletes and limited number of facilities. We wanted to be judged on what we are right now not on what are in two years. In two years, we will have a track record and will be based on that.”

American Leadership Academy, a charter school in Lexington that’s in its first year of existence, is an at-large league member playing a junior varsity schedule this year. Their plea to stay in 2A was denied 10-5 on Wednesday by the SCHSL executive committee. Those committee members in favor of denying ALA cited the school’s ability to have success quicker because they can draw students from a larger area in Lexington County.

But ALA executive director Gordon Smith and Canady cited various reasons for the appeal, disputing the notion they would be able to win quickly.

“Right now, we aren’t there,” Canady said during the meeting.

Canady and Smith also pushed back on the suggestions that the success of ALA schools in other states and the high quality coaches the school hired would make students want to transfer in.

“Yes, we have quality coaches but we have high-character coaches,” Canady said.

Smith added that coaches go through the same hiring process they have for other teachers in the building.

Appellate panel chairman Bob Davis on Friday said ALA wasn’t given the same leniency that other new traditional public schools are given.

“If we do it with new public schools, we should do it with new charter schools,” Davis said.

The decision to move Abbeville to Class A was a bit surprising given the school’s success in football. The Panthers have won 12 state championships, with nine coming in Class 2A.

But Abbeville officials pointed out in their appeal they aren’t having success in other sports and they’ve declined in attendance.

Appellate panel member Andy Tweito felt like Abbeville was being punished for their success in football, which made up 35% of the school’s points in Carlisle Cup standings. The Carlisle Cup is a year-long competition in which schools earn points for athletic success in their classification.

Abbeville and ALA were two of six schools to make a second appeal Friday. All were denied originally by the SCHSL executive committee on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Those losing appeals on Friday were St. Joseph’s, Southside Christian, Bishop England and James Island. All are private schools except James Island, which is a charter school in the Charleston area.

Under this year’s SCHSL realignment guidelines, there were supposed to be no fewer than 38 schools in 3A and no more than 44 in 2A. After this week’s appeals there are 54 schools in 5A (no change), 41 schools in 4A (down from 46), 32 schools in 3A (down from 38), 46 schools in 2A (up from 40) and 50 schools in A (up from 45).

But that number was before appeals were made and no further changes are likely, an SCHSL official told The State.

With classifications now set, the process to assign schools into regions can begin. There will be a classification organizational meeting in late January or early February, followed by region placements. The executive committee will hear appeals regarding region placement on Feb. 6-8.

Any other appeals will be heard by the SCHSL executive committee on Feb. 13. The appellate panel will hear any final appeals on Feb. 20.

ABBEVILLE, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - The Piedmont region of South Carolina is home to an area that is rich in gems.

We visited Diamond Hill Mine in Abbeville for this week’s One Tank Trip.

Carol Sauercorwin and her husband love it here.

“We had to come back here. This is our second trip,” she said.

They’re on a trip from the Charleston area. Since they’re close by, they want to see what they could find at Diamond Hill Mine.

MORE ONE-TANK TRIPS:

“You see what other people are finding and you just want to come back and find it yourself,” said Sauercorwin.

Finding it yourself is what this place is all about.

“There used to be a really big hill right here, and people would ride by it and say look at the diamonds on the hill,” said volunteer David Brown.

What they actually saw were many different types of crystals.

There are still about a dozen types of crystals here and you can dig for them yourself.

Brown says it’s therapeutic.

“It’s fun. You get in there and you get in a zone, and you forget about all your troubles behind you,” he said.

When our Will Volk visited, the mine was muddy from recent rain, but he didn’t let that stop him.

“You’re gonna be dirty,” Sauercorwin told him.

Brown told him: “Wear your worst clothes, so you’re in trouble today.”

As it turns out, Volk was just fine. The rain helped bring crystals in the pile closer to the surface, meaning he didn’t have to dig deep to find something.

He found a couple of nice pieces.

At Diamond Hill Mine, you can try finding your own.

“Mother Nature’s just amazing,” said Sauercorwin.

Diamond Hill Mine is open every day, including holidays.

You pay one price for the day, and you keep everything you find. It’s $20 for adults, $10 for teenagers 13-17, $5 for kids 6-12, kids 5 and under are free, seniors 65 and older are $10, veterans are $15.

They suggest bringing your own tools to dig, or you can rent some.

The adversity and outside noise have been there all season for Gray Collegiate. At one point, they didn’t know what kind of season they would have. They faced the prospect of playing a shortened season once it was decided all their region opponents would forfeit games.

At the end of the day, they’ve persevered. And they also know where the season will end: the Class 2A state championship.

BJ Mongomery accounted for two touchdowns and Tyler Waller threw for two more Friday and the War Eagles used a hard-hitting, tenacious defense to knock off Abbeville 27-12.

Gray Collegiate will be making its second state championship game appearance on Thursday, Nov. 30 when it plays Oceanside Collegiate, a winner over Hampton County, at 7 p.m. at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium in Orangeburg. The War Eagles won the title in 2021, their only other appearance in the finals. The Landsharks lost to Abbeville in the Class 2A title game last season.

“It means everything. What these guys have been through all year,” Gray Collegiate coach Adam Holmes said. “We maybe were going to have a four-game schedule. But at the end of the day, our guys persevered. Football teaches you how to face adversity and our football team faced adversity. We went out and played great football teams and it got us ready for nights like this. (Abbeville) set the precedent for 2A and that’s what we’re working to be and get on that level.”

The War Eagles (14-3) had to come back from an early deficit. And it was a special teams play that turned out to be the turning point. Demarcus Leach sprinted 80 yards for a score to bring the visiting Panthers within 13-12 with 1:10 remaining in the third quarter.

That’s when Montgomery made the play of the game. He misplayed the ensuing kickoff and let it bounce around on the ground. He gathered himself enough to go 88 yards just in front of the Abbeville sideline to make it 20-12 with less than a minute remaining in the third quarter.

“I had to stop and give it a second to make sure it didn’t roll through my legs,” Montgomery said. “Coach talked about it all week that if we take it back to the right side, we score. That’s what we did. We executed it very well.”

Holmes confirmed they thought they could make a big play on special teams.

“We worked on that all week,” he said. “We knew it was there. We just had to get our opportunity. We almost broke one every time. Finally, BJ hit it and broke the game open.”

Abbeville struck first on a 24-yard TD pass from Leach to Karson Norman on the opening drive.

But Waller, who was 13-of-22 for 165 yards, sandwiched a couple of TD passes around the half to give the War Eagles the lead for good. First, he connected with Blaine Redmond on a 7-yard TD just before the half to make it a 6-all game at the break.

Then after a turnover on the first possession of the second half, Waller directed 3-play, 23-yard drive that ended with an 18-yard TD strike to Jamarious Lockett with 5:21 remaining in the third. Lockett finished with six catches for 103 yards.

Montgomery, who was the workhorse on the ground with 96 yards on 24 carries, iced it on the next Gray possession with a five-yard run with 7:59 remaining.

The War Eagles defense took over from there.

“Our defense did an amazing job,” Holmes said. “They balled out tonight. Guys like (Michael) Boulware and (Trequan) Singleton played great. Other than that one long run, we held them and made them have to go on long, long drives. Proud of that defense and we just have to do it one more week.”

Habitat Affiliates In Laurens, Greenville Merging Efforts

Habitat for Humanity of Laurens County is partnering with Habitat for Humanity of Greenville County to expand services.

Under the new agreement, officials said Habitat Greenville will provide financial, management and leadership resources that will benefit the people of Laurens County by creating more opportunities for people to buy their own homes as well as provide for revitalization projects of existing owner-occupied homes.

Both of those efforts help strengthen families and neighborhoods across Laurens County, the officials said.

Habitat of Laurens County will have a full-time staff member for the first time under this plan, which allows for the nonprofit to offer more for the people of Laurens County.

Ben Barron, a South Carolina native, will serve as the director of Operations for Laurens County.

Officials said Habitat Greenville was chosen as the new partner because it went from a volunteer team to a mission-driven organization with a full-time CEO in 2009.

Since then, Habitat has doubled the number of homes it has built each year; started doing renovations to existing homes; increased fundraising; and have been honored numerous times for their dedication to creating affordable housing solutions.

Habitat for Humanity of Greenville County opened its doors in 1985 to bring families, community partners, and volunteers together to construct affordable, energy-efficient homes that help families build strength, stability, and self-reliance.

As of May 2023, Habitat Greenville has completed the construction of 405 homes. Habitat Greenville received the 2017 Builder of the Year award from EarthCraft, and in recognition of financial health, accountability, and transparency, maintain a 4-Star Charity status by Charity Navigator.

One of The 2023 Southerners Of The Year

Southern Living announced the 2023 Southerners Of The Year, choosing five trailblazers from across the South who are preserving the history of this region and its people, protecting natural resources and wildlife, inspiring younger generations to follow examples of selfless service, and feeding those in need.

Among them is Katie Stagliano of Katie’s Krops in Summerville, S.C.

According to the magazine:

Stagliano found her calling at 9-years-old when her third-grade teacher sent her home with a seedling for the backyard. Her tiny plant grew into a 40-pound cabbage.

“I was shocked because I didn’t know they could get that big. But I realized that this one was far too large for my family to eat,” she says.

Every night, her father would remind them just how lucky they were to sit down to a healthy dinner when some people were not able to.

“That’s how I got the idea that changed my life forever,” she says. “I donated my cabbage to a soup kitchen to help feed those who might not otherwise have a meal.”

The director of the kitchen invited her to serve her cabbage in a soup with ham and rice.

Stagliano remembers how surprised she was to see how many families just like hers were waiting in line for a meal. Because that one vegetable served 275 guests, she thought, “How many people could a garden feed?”

With the support of her parents, she launched Katie’s Krops. The idea took off when her school gave her a plot of land the size of a football field.

Soon, the whole student body was involved. Katie’s Krops became an official nonprofit, and her message began to spread.

Kids across the country reached out wanting to start their own gardens, so the organization began offering funding and support to Katie’s Krops Growers between the ages of 7 and 16.

Today, at 25 years old, Stagliano is at the helm of a project that includes 100 gardens in 33 states. Collectively, Katie’s Krops has donated around 600,000 pounds of produce—with no plans of slowing down. Stagliano says, “I would love to reach all 50 states and eventually expand internationally.”

Rick Wright Named Head Coach, Technical Director of Greenville Triumph

The Greenville Triumph announced Rick Wright as its head coach and technical director.

Wright succeeds John Harkes in the role after serving as assistant coach since 2019.

President of the Greenville Triumph SC Chris Lewis says key factors in Wright’s hiring include his extensive coaching experience, dedication to the club and its culture, and presence in the Upstate soccer community.

In addition to his assistant coaching position, Wright previously served as director of technical alliances and community development where he was responsible for cultivating relationships with the local soccer community.

In that role, Wright worked collaboratively with the club’s front office on community and player relations initiatives while collaborating on its youth soccer strategy and programming.

Since 2019, Wright has helped spearhead several of the club’s youth initiatives including the Unified team, Academy Cup team, Pass it On clinics, and Future Leaders programs.

“Rick has demonstrated a passion not only for our team’s success on the field, but also for carrying out our club’s mission to positively impact our community,” said Chairman and majority owner Joe Erwin. “He has a deep knowledge and understanding of the game, and we look forward to having him play an active role in the club’s continued growth.”

Born in Hamilton, Bermuda, Wright has been involved with South Carolina soccer since 1976.

He helped start Anderson University’s soccer program and then served as its head coach for four years before returning to his alma mater, Erskine College, as head coach of the men’s and women’s programs from 1987-1993.

During his time at Anderson University and Erskine College, Wright led both teams to multiple conference titles.

In addition, Wright spent 10 years on the staff of the US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program for Region III, and 12 years as an Olympic Development Program South Carolina state coach.

As a player, Wright made appearances for both the Bermuda and U.S. National Teams, including an appearance with the United States team at the 1976 Olympic Games.

Officials said Wright’s support staff for the 2024 season will be announced at a later date.

The club recently announced it will be returning to Furman’s Paladin Stadium for a second season as the organization continues to work on securing a location and plan for a permanent stadium.
