This should be a good year for apple picking, according to the 2025 forecast from the U.S. Apple Association, which estimates the harvest will be 6 percent higher than in 2024, for a total of 273 million bushels.
That estimate is based on USDA data from the top seven apple-producing states — respectively, Washington, New York, Michigan, Pennsylvania, California, Oregon and Virginia. When other states are considered, total production could be as much as 290 million bushels, the industry trade group said

A new gelato shop in Guilford is being welcomed with open arms by the community.
The inclusive gelato shop The Wave, located at 116 Whitfield St., celebrated its grand opening on Monday.
It is owned by Tara Beatty, a special education teacher, and speech pathologist Keri Climie.
Beatty and Climie worked in the public education system and throughout the years working with special education students, they knew there was a need for more transitional opportunities.
That is where Beatty said the idea to start the nonprofit, SoundLife Connections came to be; which later developed into The Wave ice cream truck and most recently, The Wave ice cream shop.
“As we got funding and found this spot about two years ago, we really decided on what our direction was so it's been two years of building, getting the grants and fundraising to make The Wave possible,” Beatty said.
At SoundLife Connections, Beatty and Climie provided vocational education and life skill training for young adults with disabilities, and The Wave is now an extension of that work.
“Our goal is to get as many people trained and employed as possible but not all just work here but also help the community see that jobs are possible for everyone," Beatty said.
Beatty said they currently employ adults ranging from 19 to 40 years of age.
Climie said they have been training their employees on how to run a shop while practicing their fine motor skills.
“We’ve noticed that a lot of our employees do really well with the modeling so if we’re shadowing them side by side and walking through the steps, a lot of them are understanding the sequences and the roles," Climie said.
She explained they chose to open a food business due to its social nature.
“A lot of young adults with disabilities have a hard time connecting with either finding a job or even social connections so we’re trying to marry both, working and having that chance to make connections,” Climie said.
Cisco Keyes is one of the employees at the shop; he said The Wave is his first job and described his first week as amazing.
His father, Dennis Keyes, said it's been incredible to see his son and the other employees thriving in their new roles as employees.
"He loves putting on The Wave uniform, coming into work and interacting with everyone in the community, he says he's famous,” Keyes said.

We got along the list.”The financing was put in place before the home was built, and Gustafson and his wife were able to move in la...
When Guilford resident Jay Gustafson first heard about the affordable, sustainable homes being built in town, he immediately signed up.
“It was a sister-in-law who saw a posting somewhere that said they were collecting names for an affordable housing project in Guilford,” Gustafson said. “We had just moved from California here, and we said, ‘Oh,’ put our hands up. We got along the list.”
The financing was put in place before the home was built, and Gustafson and his wife were able to move in last July.
The Great Hill Cottage Community homes are all pre-fab, quickly constructed, and operate on well water and septic tanks. Home construction was affordable due to the modular builds, and the homes operate sustainably, using heat pumps for electric heating and cooling.
The homes were created to meet the U.S. Department of Energy’s “Net Zero Energy Ready” program standards. This means the homes can produce as much energy as they consume, extending some savings to homeowners.
Gustafson’s July electric bill was under $120, and his bill in the wintertime was around $220.
Construction began on the homes, built by local nonprofit developer Green Planet Company, in 2021.
“We were incorporated in 2018 and shortly thereafter, this property became available and jumped at the opportunity,” developer Chris Widmer said.
There are seven homes in the neighborhood, on what was previously forest land. A road, Great Hill Commons, had to be constructed and land cleared to establish the community, in which all of the homes sold for less than $280,000, Widmer said.
“Our goal was really to find a way to build affordable housing at a reasonable cost and I had a cost that was comparable to the standard sort of construction method, stick framing, if you will,” Widmer said. “I'd be lying if I didn't say that we wanted to do better, and I think we can do that. I think the costs here were more than we expected.”
Another sustainable, affordable project is in the pipeline for Guilford. The town plans to donate a parcel of land on Saw Mill Road for Green Planet Company’s next project.
“What I want to propose is that we build the six houses and then do six accessory dwelling units, one for each house, that would be also affordable deed restricted rentals,” Widmer said.
But, the lack of infrastructure is a barrier for more housing construction in Guilford, according to First Selectman Matt Hoey.
“That's the challenge with communities like Guilford. In terms of affordable housing, it’s the density issue,” Hoey said. “It's very difficult for us to achieve the kind of numbers that people are looking for, but we're doing what we can, and we're doing bite-sized pieces.”
The town used COVID-19 relief dollars to extend emergency water lines up to the new neighborhood, ensuring fire hydrant access.
Guilford also relaxed septic system regulations to make larger developments more feasible.
“It seems like it's almost impossible for us to make significant progress in any one time. Government is incremental at best, right?” Hoey said. “A little bit here, a little bit here, a little bit there, and we just gonna keep hanging away and do what we can.”

Stacey Smith, a Guilford resident who owns LEVLup fitness, which is a three-minute drive away from the new TJ Maxx, said the arrival of the discount department store represents a local observation: Guilford is changing.
“You want to walk around the town green and visit all the cute stores, but you do need the convenience factor of big stores,” she said. “I’m excited for the change.”
Guilford, a historic town in Connecticut, is well known for its beloved eight-acre town common, Guilford Green, which is home to a host of small, independent shops.
Despite the town’s mom-and-pop shop character, Smith said she, like other residents, missed the Guilford Walmart that closed in 2022. But the vacant store in Big Y Plaza will soon be home to a new Target that will open just a few days before the TJ Maxx. The opening of two big department stores within the same month is an arrival Smith said she welcomes.
Dylan Walter, the vice chairman of the Clinton Economic Development Commission, previously told CT Insider the commission was a bit taken aback by how quickly the retail chain closed in Clinton. Walter told CT Insider the closure of TJ Maxx in Clinton would be a “major loss” to the town’s residents.

GUILFORD, CT — The Guilford Board of Education has appointed Dr. Wesley Simon as interim principal of Adams Middle School. The unanimous vote came at the board’s Aug. 11 meeting.
Simon most recently served as dean of academics and International Baccalaureate coordinator at the Stoneleigh-Burnham School in Greenfield, Mass. Her previous leadership roles include assistant director of the senior school at Saltus Grammar School in Hamilton, Bermuda, and dean of community life at Cheshire Academy in Connecticut.
She holds degrees from the University of Connecticut and Southern Connecticut State University, a sixth-year diploma in educational leadership from Quinnipiac University, a professional certificate from Cornell University and a doctorate in organizational change and leadership from the University of Southern California’s Rossier School of Education.
"I am extremely excited about Dr. Simon’s acceptance of this interim role," Superintendent of Schools Paul Freeman said in an announcement. "With her extremely diverse educational background and strong leadership skills, Adams Middle School will be in good hands, while we conduct a thorough search for a permanent principal."
Simon said she is eager to return to a school her family knows well.
"I'm honored to step into the role of interim principal at Adams Middle School — a place that holds special meaning for me," she said. "My daughter graduated from Adams in 2013, so I've experienced firsthand the supportive, dynamic environment this school offers. It's a privilege to have the opportunity to serve this incredible community, and I look forward to working with students, staff, and families to ensure a successful and enriching school year for everyone."
The position opened following the departure of former principal Dr. Garin Mullin.
Simon will serve during the search for a permanent replacement.
