Home Care Annandale, VA

They say that your golden years are the best years of your life. For most older Americans, that's how it should be - a time to relax, reflect, and live life in a familiar place. After all, senior citizens in the U.S. have worked tirelessly to build a better economy, serve their communities, and raise families.

However, as seniors grow older, completing daily tasks like showering and enjoying activities such as visiting the historic Manassas Gap Railroad Embankment gets harder without someone by their side. Unfortunately, many older Americans aren't able to rely on their adult children for help. The reality in today's world is that family members do not have the skills or time to dedicate to caring for their parents. That's where Always Best Care Senior Services comes in.

Our in-home care services are for people who prefer to stay at home as they grow older but need ongoing care that family or friends cannot provide. More and more older adults prefer to live far away from long-term, institutionalized facilities and closer to the place where they feel most comfortable - their home. Scott was very helpful in arranging a dependable and compassionate caregiver for the time which we needed the assistance. “I had caregivers for my elderly mother from Always Best Care for close to three years, and I would unreservedly do so again. It took a little bit to find providers who were right for my mother’s particular needs (besides becoming increasingly frail, she had severe anxiety), and for my schedule (my mother was living with me), but owner Scott Maguire was extremely accessible and responsive, and ultimately we established an arrangement that worked well. The caregivers were honest, reliable, caring, and responsive to my feedback, and communication via daily logs and in-person reporting ensured I was aware of anything I needed to know. I found the advantage of working with a small company whose owner I never had trouble reaching or getting to understand my needs a huge factor in what made this agency work for me.”

I cannot recommend ABC Senior Services highly enough. I will always be grateful for their services.”

TESTIMONIALS

“Anyone reading this is likely where my family was. Completely exhausted and desperate. My husband and I had been primary caregivers for my in-laws when one ended up with non-COVID pneumonia and the other had a stroke followed by a fall-- all since early January. Now vaccinated, they were ready for outside help and wanted it to start right away. We had been talking to an agency throughout the process that came highly recommended, Old Dominion. But they were not able to turn around an awesome caregiver in 72 hours and recommended I call one of their friendly competitors-- Scott- At Always Best Care Senior Services in Herndon. Scott understood that we were looking for stopgap care until Old Dominion could find someone permanent and after a call Friday afternoon, he had someone at my in-laws on Monday, 8:00am. And she was terrific. It makes all the difference to have such a positive experience from the beginning. My in-laws were very pleased and appreciated that Scott had been upfront that the caregiver he had available had a thick accent and that, combined with a mask, might be challenging for someone hearing impaired. This is an issue for my mother in law and it made all the difference that she knew in advance. The other thing I appreciated is that all of Scott's caregivers are vaccinated or on their way. The one he sent was getting her second shot later in her start week with us. Unfortunately, my father-in-law is going to need a stint in skilled rehab, so we won't be continuing with Scott's wonderful caregiver. But Scott stepped up to help provide some insiders perspective on facilities. There was nothing to gain from that, except putting goodness out into the world. The process is overwhelming and it made such a difference to get his perspective. We could not have been more pleased to have had such a terrific experience and highly recommend Always Best Care Senior Services if you or a loved one is looked for quality care.”

“I had the good fortune to work for Scott Maguire at ABC following my move from New Hampshire to Virginia. I was with the agency for eight years until last month when I moved to Florida. I had opportunities to work for other agencies between clients, but chose to stick with Always Best Care, because the name of the agency says it all.”

What is Non-Medical Senior Care in Annandale, VA?

lm-check

Home is where the heart is. While that saying can sound a tad cliche, it is especially true for many seniors living in America. When given a choice, older adults most often prefer to grow older at home. An AARP study found that three out of four adults over the age of 50 want to stay in their homes and communities as they age.

lm-check

When you begin to think about why, it makes sense. Home offers a sense of security, comfort, and familiarity.

lm-check

The truth is, as we age, we begin to rely on others for help. When a family is too busy or lives too far away to fulfill this role, in-home senior care is often the best solution. Home care services allow seniors to enjoy personal independence while also receiving trustworthy assistance from a trained caregiver.

lm-check

At Always Best Care, we offer a comprehensive range of home care services to help seniors stay healthy while they get the help they need to remain independent. As your senior loved one gets older, giving them the gift of senior care is one of the best ways to show your love, even if you live far away.

Respite Care

Respite Care Services

According to AARP, more than 53 million adults living in the U.S. provide care to someone over 50 years old. Unfortunately, these caregivers experience stress, exhaustion, and even depression. Our respite care services help family caregivers address urgent obligations, spend time with their children, and enjoy nearby activities. Perhaps more importantly, respite care gives family members time to recharge and regroup. Taking personal time to de-stress reduces the risk of caregiver burnout. So, if you've always wanted to eat at the local Incheon Restaurant or visit The Pines Historical Marker, don't feel bad. Doing so is great for both you and your loved one.

At the end of the day, our goal is to become a valuable part of your senior's daily routine. That way, we may help give them the highest quality of life possible. We know that staying at home is important for your loved one, and we are here to help make sure that is possible.

If you have been on the fence about non-medical home care, there has never been a better time than now to give your senior the care, assistance, and companionship they deserve.

Aging in Place: The Preferred Choice for Most Seniors

While it's true that some seniors have complicated medical needs that prevent them from staying at home, aging in place is often the best arrangement for seniors and their families. With a trusted caregiver, seniors have the opportunity to live with a sense of dignity and do so as they see fit - something that is unavailable to many older people today.

In-home care makes it possible for millions of seniors to age in place every year. Rather than moving to a strange nursing home, seniors have the chance to stay at home where they feel the happiest and most comfortable.

Here are just a few of the reasons why older men and women prefer to age at home:

How much does a senior's home truly mean to them?

A study published by the American Society on Aging found that more than half of seniors say their home's emotional value means more than how much their home is worth in monetary value. It stands to reason, then, that a senior's home is where they want to grow old.

With the help of elderly care in Annandale, VA, seniors don't have to age in a sterilized care facility. Instead, they can age gracefully in the place they want to be most: their home. In contrast, seniors who move to a long-term care facility must adapt to new environments, new people, and new systems that the facility implements. At this stage in life, this kind of drastic change can be more harmful than helpful.

Institutional care facilities like nursing homes often put large groups of people together to live in one location. On any given day, dozens of staff members and caregivers run in and out of these facilities. Being around so many new people in a relatively small living environment can be dangerous for a seniors' health and wellbeing. When you consider that thousands of seniors passed away in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, opting for in-home care is often a safer, healthier choice for seniors.

Aging in place has been shown to improve seniors' quality of life, which helps boost physical health and also helps insulate them from viral and bacterial risks found in elderly living facilities.

For many seniors, the ability to live independently with assistance from a caregiver is a priceless option. With in-home care, seniors experience a higher level of independence and freedom - much more so than in other settings like a nursing home. When a senior has the chance to age in place, they get to live life on their own terms, inside the house that they helped make into a home. More independence means more control over their personal lives, too, which leads to increased levels of fulfillment, happiness, and personal gratification. Over time, these positive feelings can manifest into a healthier, longer life.

More independence, a healthier life, and increased comfort are only a few benefits of aging in place. You have to take into consideration the role of cost and convenience. Simply put, it's usually easier and more affordable to help seniors age in place than it is to move them into an institutional care facility. According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, seniors who age in the comfort of their homes can save thousands of dollars per month.

In-home care services from Always Best Care, for instance, are often less expensive than long-term solutions, which can cost upwards of six figures per year. To make matters worse, many residential care facilities are reluctant to accept long-term care insurance and other types of payment assistance.

With Always Best Care's home care services, seniors and their families have a greater level of control over their care plans. In-home care gives seniors the chance to form a bond with a trusted caregiver and also receive unmatched care that is catered to their needs. In long-term care facilities, seniors and their loved ones have much less control over their care plan and have less of a say in who provides their care.

 Elderly Care Annandale, VA

Affordable Care

In-home care is a valuable resource that empowers seniors to age in place on their own terms. However, a big concern for many families and their loved ones is how much in-home care costs. If you're worried that in-home care is too expensive, you may be pleasantly surprised to learn that it is one of the most affordable senior care arrangements available.

Typically, hiring an Always Best Care in-home caregiver for a few hours a week is more affordable than sending your loved one to a long-term care facility. This is true even for seniors with more complex care needs.

At Always Best Care, we will work closely with you and your family to develop a Care Plan that not only meets your care needs, but your budget requirements, too. Once we discover the level of care that you or your senior need, we develop an in-home care plan that you can afford.

In addition to our flexible care options, families should also consider the following resources to help offset potential home care costs:

If your loved one qualifies, Medicaid may help reduce in-home care costs. Review your VA's Medicaid program laws and benefits, and make sure your senior's financial and medical needs meet Medicaid eligibility requirements.
Attendance and aid benefits through military service can cover a portion of the costs associated with in-home care for veterans and their spouses.
Many senior care services like in-home care are included in long-term care insurance options. Research different long-term care solutions to find a plan that provides coverage for senior care.
Home care can be included as part of a senior's private insurance plan. Read over your loved one's insurance policy carefully or speak with their insurance provider to determine if in-home care is covered.
Depending on the life insurance plan, you may be able to apply your policy toward long-term care. You may be able to use long-term-care coverage to help pay for in-home elderly care.

Compassionate Care. Trusted Caregivers.

When you or your senior loved one needs assistance managing daily tasks at home, finding a qualified caregiver can be challenging. It takes a special kind of person to provide reliable care for your senior loved one. However, a caregiver's role involves more than meal preparation and medication reminders. Many seniors rely on their caregivers for companionship, too.

Our companion care services give seniors the chance to socialize in a safe environment and engage in activities at home. These important efforts boost morale and provide much-needed relief from repetitive daily routines. A one-on-one, engaging conversation can sharpen seniors' minds and give them something in which to be excited.

A seemingly small interaction, like a short hug goodbye, can make a major difference in a senior's day. Instead of battling against feelings of isolation, seniors begin to look forward to seeing their caregiver each week.

Understanding the nuances of senior care is just one of the reasons why our care providers are so great at their job.

Unlike some senior care companies, our caregivers must undergo extensive training before they work for Always Best Care. In addition, our caregivers receive ongoing training throughout the year. This training ensures that their standard of care matches up to the high standards we've come to expect. During this training, they will brush up on their communication skills, safety awareness, and symptom spotting. That way, your loved one receives the highest level of non-medical home care from day one.

Assisted Living Referral Services

While it's true that many seniors prefer to age at home, sometimes in-home care isn't the best fit. For those seniors and their families, choosing an assisted living facility makes more sense. Unfortunately, finding the optimal care facility is easier said than done in today's day and age. That's when Always Best Care's assisted living referral services begin to make a lot of sense.

Assisted living is a form of housing intended for seniors who require varying degrees of medical and personal attention. Accommodations may include single rooms, apartments, or shared living arrangements. Assisted living communities are typically designed to resemble a home-like environment and are physically constructed to encourage the independence of residents.

Respite Care Annandale, VA

At assisted living communities, seniors receive help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and eating. They may also benefit from coordination of services with outside healthcare providers, and monitoring of resident activities to ensure their health, safety, and well-being. Caregivers who work at assisted living communities can also provide medication administration and personal care services for older adults.

Other services offered within assisted living communities can include some or all of the following:

  • Housekeeping
  • Laundry
  • Recreational Activities
  • Social Outings
  • Emergency Medical Response
  • Medication Monitoring

I enjoyed your column about how Atteentee Road got its name. I knew a family who lived on Private Lane in Annandale. That struck me as an unusual name — sort of like the people living there had their own private street. When I asked about it, I was told that the developer of the small enclave planned to name each street after a military rank. He started with Private Lane but never went any further with the military theme.

Nancy Jerdan, Springfield

An entire neighborhood of military rank-inspired names is no more far-fetched than some of the other naming principles we’ve encountered in this space recently, from Flintstones references to Shakespeare characters. And according to Chris Barbuschak from the City of Fairfax Regional Library’s Virginia Room, there seems to be some truth to the military rank story.

The land that would eventually be home to Private Lane was purchased in 1940 by Goodrich Rubber executive James William Ferguson Jr. and his wife, Mary Rosalind Ferguson, Barbuschak said. At some point in the mid-1950s, they built a lake on the property, then drew up a preliminary plat for a proposed subdivision.

Remembering a time when duckpin bowling ruled the roost in D.C.

Barbuschak said the couple never officially filed a deed of declaration, so it’s unclear what street names they planned to bestow on the community, but the two easements that were actually built give a hint. They were called Private Lane and Corporal Drive.

A few single-family homes were built in the ensuing years. Said Barbuschak: “In 1992, Corporal Drive was renamed Autumn Lake Way and Private Lane was dedicated as a public street when the Chapel Lake Estates subdivision was built.”

A public street named Private Lane is probably less of a problem than a private street named Public Lane. Why wasn’t the military theme employed? Perhaps the developers thought there might be dissension in the ranks.

Loving your street names installments. Do you know anything behind Piney Meetinghouse Road out in Potomac? Was it a Quaker meetinghouse? Where did it used to be (presumably) along that road?

Rocky Semmes, Alexandria

It was not a Quaker meetinghouse but a Methodist church with an African American congregation. That church — Union Wesley Church — was built on an earlier gathering place that took its name from the Black community in which it stood: the Pines.

The Pines was centered around the intersection of today’s Piney Meetinghouse Road and Glen Road, between the Black enclaves of Scotland to the east and Tobytown to the west. Nearby is Piney Branch, a creek. The church was near where Piney Glen Lane hits Piney Meetinghouse Road.

Street names give a sense of place, of people and of history

According to Nina Honemond Clarke’s 1983 book on Black 19th-century churches in Maryland and D.C., the Pines had about 15 to 20 houses that were home to formerly enslaved people who “were farmers, sawmill workers and quarry men at the old Seneca Stone Quarry.”

Said Sarah Hedlund, archivist/librarian at Montgomery History, “The first building used as a church was a log structure called Piney Meetinghouse, after which the road was named.”

The earliest newspaper reference Answer Man can find to the road is from 1861, when a group of Montgomery County landowners placed an ad urging county commissioners to build a road from Rockville to Potomac, intersecting with the “road leading from the Piney Meeting House road” to the C&O Canal at Lock 21.

There must eventually have been some confusion about the name because in 1949, an expert on geographic nomenclature was consulted to help decide which of two roads should get that name in that part of the county. Both roads started up near what was called Hunting Hill — roughly where Route 28 hits Interstate 270 today — and headed south, hitting River Road.

The expert decreed that the easternmost road would be called Piney Meetinghouse Road. The westernmost one would be Travilah Road. And so it remains today.

As for the Piney Meetinghouse, it’s long gone. So is Union Wesley Church. What remains is the cemetery established there by parishioners. As with so many African American cemeteries, it became overgrown, forgotten by all but the descendants of those buried there, occasionally disturbed by construction.

In 1970, the county tax assessment office began taxing the property, which is just over half an acre. According to Clarke’s book, the cemetery should have been exempt from taxes, but the paperwork was never filed for that exemption.

In 1975, a Pennsylvania man, Saul Joseph, bought the property sight unseen for less than $600 with the intention of building a home there. Joseph was surprised to discover the cemetery, site of around 100 graves.

Fortunately, no house was built.

The graveyard has been on the county’s inventory of cemeteries since 2019. According to a statement from the planning commission, “Montgomery County is investigating the most appropriate means for securing, preserving, and maintaining the site of the historic Wesley Union Methodist Church Cemetery.”

(Updated at 5:05 p.m.) A fire that tore through four Annandale businesses yesterday (Sunday) caused over $2.2 million in property damages, the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department estimates.

The two-alarm fire began in the low-lying commercial building in the 7200 block of Columbia Pike around 7:06 a.m., prompting an extended closure of the roadway as firefighters spent hours working to extinguish the flames.

The incident was partly prolonged by the building’s instability, which kept all firefighters outside, and the need for the gas company to come on site to shut off a gas line under the road that fueled a “small” fire, according to the FCFRD.

The fire department confirmed that there were no injuries, but damages to the businesses were expected to be “catastrophic,” DC News Now reported yesterday, noting that over 100 firefighters responded.

The affected companies include JJ Salon & Barber, the mailing service Hanmi Post, and the Korean restaurants To Sok Jip and Bonchon, which is now listed as temporarily closed.

“As of right now, the damage is being assessed and Bonchon is waiting to hear how long the location will be closed to repair the damage,” a public relations representative for Bonchon said.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is still underway.

Over 2,700 households in Northern Virginia are working with Food For Neighbors to end teen food insecurity. Help us reach 2,800 so we can better fill the weekend food gap for students in your local secondary schools! Sign up to donate food and toiletries up to five times per year via our popular Red Bag Program. You’ll be helping students attending Annandale, Falls Church, and Justice High Schools as well as Luther Jackson Middle School.

As Annandale High School is one of our newer school partners, we’re looking for lots of Red Bag donors in nearby neighborhoods. If you sign up by Wednesday, November 1st, you’ll be able to support our November 11th Red Bag Event!

During each of our Red Bag Events, we’re currently collecting well over 20,000 pounds of food and toiletries to help students in 42 Northern Virginia middle and high schools. As the number of students we serve continues to grow, your donations are key to helping the most vulnerable students in your local schools. School staff have shared that the reliable, supplemental food helps students attend school more regularly, focus on their schoolwork, and earn better grades.

“The fabric of our community is stronger when we weave together, and our community partners are an integral fiber of our pantry fabric," shared Norma Foti, Pantry Coordinator at the Annandale High School PTSA Pantry. "We are excited about our new partnership with Food For Neighbors. The additional student-centered food we receive from the Red Bag collections will be used to supply pantry snack bins in our student services, counseling, and resource centers allowing us to expand our pantry’s reach throughout the school day and giving the staff an additional resource to share with their students when they are meeting with them.”

Paula Prettyman, Food For Neighbors' Falls Church Area Manager, is equally excited about the partnership. "I've been amazed by the commitment of the Annandale High School PTSA in recent years to support their food insecure students and families," shared Prettyman. "Even through the pandemic, the Annandale HS Food Pantry was open. I'm looking forward to working with the PTSA and Annandale HS Principal, Shawn DeRose, to bring even more of the community in to support their high school. I hope every household who can will become an FFN Red Bag Donor."

The kindergartners came out of the lunch line with trays wobbling.

As the littlest ones struggled to balance their meals on broad plastic boards for the first time, every adult in the cafeteria jumped in to guide them.

“Who’s your teacher?” “Are these your friends?” “Where’s your class?”

The children, dazed by the din, responded with silent nods and blank stares. They hadn’t quite figured out the lunchroom yet.

“They’ve never been on the playground. They’ve never been to lunch,” a teacher said, bouncing between tables to tend to students. “It’s havoc.”

After a morning of introductions and instructions, this was lunchtime on the first day of school at Annandale Terrace Elementary in Fairfax County. Maybe second only to recess, lunch is the best part of the day, these kids say — a chance to reconnect with friends, exchange riddles and tell everyone how you learned to swim underwater this summer.

Parents and teachers: How are you feeling about the new school year? Tell the Post.

The first-day menu: mini corn dogs, grilled cheese, or a peanut butter and jelly Uncrustable. There were snacks such as yogurt, warm pretzels and cheese sticks, and under the plastic sneeze-guard of the salad bar were orange slices, eggs and grapes.

After the second-graders, who dined at 10:30 a.m., came the kindergartners. Their sneakers dangled under the round tables, their legs not yet long enough to touch the floor.

One girl, beholding her breaded hot dog, was incredulous to learn that it contained corn. No kernels were evident. A boy next to her was certain his orange slices were actually lemons. (They weren’t.)

He drained a glug of chocolate milk, paused and let fly a robust belch, which he followed with an impish smile.

Chocolate milk remains a totem of elementary school. In the drink cooler, the legion of white-milk mini-cartons sat largely untouched. Nearly every hand that reached into the fridge came out with a brown box of the good stuff.

(This reporter did not sample the corn dogs or grilled cheese. But The Washington Post found that prepackaged peanut butter and jelly sandwiches taste as good as ever, and that the grapes on offer were remarkably fresh.)

The first-graders who arrived next had left all the uncertainty of kindergarten behind. They waved eagerly to friends they hadn’t seen since last school year and bounced up to embrace. The exhortations from teachers to kindly remain at their assigned tables were not strictly observed.

A boy tripped while running across the cafeteria. That’s why you always use walking feet, a teacher reminded him.

The rules of the cafeteria are posted on the wall. They are not overly austere, and they are good lessons for life: Be respectful, responsible and safe. Use kind words and a whisper voice. Keep your space clean, follow directions, and do your own job. Stay in your seat, raise your hand for help.

And if you follow all the rules of the lunchroom, and your friends do too, you might be rewarded with a movie in the cafeteria on Fridays, which are already exciting because Friday is usually pizza day. That’s the best part of lunch, the kids say. If it gets too loud, one fifth-grader warned, “the teachers start yelling, and then everyone is yelling.” That’s the worst part of lunch.

Annandale Terrace is a Title I school, and every student — about 660 of them — receives free lunch. Rama Gundapaneni, the school’s food service manager, started prepping meals at 6:30 a.m., hours before any students arrived on campus Monday.

The school cafeteria is a staple in American culture — a cauldron in which nearly every child’s social universe is forged, at least partly. Movies and TV shows depict the cliques and drama. It’s the background for food fights and confrontations. An object of occasional ridicule for foods produced on an industrial scale.

But the cafeteria is also a haven — a place to connect with friends. And at schools like Annandale Terrace, where about 80 percent of students are economically disadvantaged, the cafeteria is in some cases the only place where students receive reliable and healthy meals.

“We know that we need to feed them so they can do some good learning,” Principal Ingrid Badia said.

The focus Monday was on getting a routine in place. A food service staffer came over to a table of third-graders to give a girl a hug. The third-grader had left her little notes last year thanking the staffer for being so nice.

Fifth-graders were the most discerning. They thought some of the food was “mid,” and they were getting tired of seeing the same meals over and over. It is their last year of eating the food before they head off to middle school next year, where presumably greater feasts await. They giggled at the thought of that transition.

Two fifth-graders donned matching “best friends” necklaces that one girl brought back from her summer vacation in Florida. They went to Disney World, and it was hot.

“Not just hot hot, but like hot!”

Some students brought their own meals in sparkly and branded lunchboxes. A fifth-grader packed hers, because she knew she wouldn’t like the cafeteria offerings. She rarely did. A fourth-grader brought his because his mom sent him with pizza.

A second-grader brought lunch because she just moved back to Virginia from out of the country, and she didn’t know how the lunch line would work. She sat alone on the first day but felt confident she’d make more friends. It would just take some time.

And now that she knew what to do, tomorrow could be different: She might try the lunch line.

ANNANDALE, Va. — A gas-fed restaurant fire in Fairfax County has left firefighters battling through heavy smoke for hours Sunday morning.

Firefighters with the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department responded just after 7 a.m. to Columbia Pike, at the small strip mall which include businesses such as Jj Hair Salon and To Sok Jip, in Annandale. The fire was said to be a two-alarm incident.

Once at the scene, firefighters were met with heavy smoke showing from the roof line of the businesses. The fire department's public information officer said it is unknown at this time which business the flames started at.

While fighting to contain the flames, hot spots and smoke, Columbia Pike was closed between Backlick Road and John Marr Drive.

Around two hours after being informed of the flame by someone who passed by the location, crews were still working to extinguish the fire. The fire department said in a 9:14 a.m. tweet that they were operating in defensive mode due to the instability of the building. All of the firefighters were outside of the building working to put out the fire.

Over three hours later, firefighters still found themselves at a smoky scene. They said the bulk of the fire was under control, but a small gas-fed fire was still burning, according to a 10:14 a.m. tweet.

Washington Gas responded to the scene to help. Access to the gas line was shut down in the road and the company is working to access the source of the problem so the fire department can fully extinguish the flame.

According to the fire department, there are four businesses in the strip mall that are affected. Though the fire is gas-fed, it is not the determined cause. The cause of the fire is currently unknown as well as the amount of damage that has been caused.

Fire officials did say no injuries were reported.
