Home Care Yucca Valley, CA

They say that your golden years are the best years of your life. For most older Americans, that's how it should be - a time to relax, reflect, and live life in a familiar place. After all, senior citizens in the U.S. have worked tirelessly to build a better economy, serve their communities, and raise families.

However, as seniors grow older, completing daily tasks like showering and enjoying activities such as visiting the historic Historic Ruins of Birthplace of Gabe Kaplan gets harder without someone by their side. Unfortunately, many older Americans aren't able to rely on their adult children for help. The reality in today's world is that family members do not have the skills or time to dedicate to caring for their parents. That's where Always Best Care Senior Services comes in.

Our in-home care services are for people who prefer to stay at home as they grow older but need ongoing care that family or friends cannot provide. More and more older adults prefer to live far away from long-term, institutionalized facilities and closer to the place where they feel most comfortable - their home. Home care in Yucca Valley, CA is a safe, effective way to give your loved ones the care they need when they need it the most.

TESTIMONIALS

“Always Best Care Senior Services has been a lifesaver. I have a cousin who lives several hundred miles from me. She has Alzheimer’s and it’s very hard to take care of her from here. I’ve had other care services before and they didn’t work out because they sent a different caregiver every day and it was very confusing and upsetting to my cousin. ABCSS has been fabulous at providing continuous care. My cousin adores her caregiver Melissa. She takes her swimming and shopping etc. Also, I cannot say enough good things about Sandra Mendoza. Because I live far away, it’s hard to know what’s going on. She keeps informed and updates me by email and text message. She calls me if there’s a problem. What more could you ask for?”

“Abc has top notch people working in the office who deal with issues in a swift and caring fashion. Especially Juan and Moises who go the extra mile when there’s an issue. As for caregivers Jessica Perry who is beyond the best I’ve ever had. She’s on top of things each day and makes having someone around the house not so bad. She gets 100% my other main caregiver Daisy, is also terrific and smart. Both of these care givers know how to think, be aware of what’s happening and maintain great attitude each day. Zap-Roxie”

“I can’t say enough good things about Always Best Care. They were prompt and courteous, met with me the same day as my Mom was being discharged from the hospital, and I needed to arrange care. Janet was the caregiver provided for my Mother. She was so kind and attentive to my Mom, also very concerned about her safety. She went over and beyond what I would have expected, and my Mom really bonded with her. I also used placement services as my Mother formerly was in assisted living but needed to move to a board and care for more care and monitoring. I was shown several beautiful homes by Bonnie Zwack who was personally invested in finding the right fit for my Mother. She even visited my Mother to ensure a positive transition. Thank you so much ABC! You lifted a huge burden off of my shoulders that at first seemed overwhelming. I’m sharing a picture that Janet helped my Mom color during an activity. Moved me to tears. Sincerely, Linda Devore”

“I just wanted to give Always Best Care a very well deserved 5 star review!! As children of seniors know, it can be a hard decision to entrust others outside of the family to provide love and care for your aging parent. However, Always Best Care of Indian Wells has been incredible in so many ways in helping facilitate home care service for my 100 year old mom. Sandra, their Care Coordinator, is an excellent communicator – patient and kind, resourceful and so very competent. Yvonne, mom’s caregiver, is loving and from our first meeting, she did those “little things” without being instructed that were important and mean so much. (Like checking dates on groceries, asking about parking so as to be considerate of the neighbors, having a routine for where to put things like mom’s keys, etc., and just focusing her attention on little things that were all about mom, etc. etc.) Moses, who installed mom’s AI devices was great as well – all smiles, so friendly and sweet to mom. And Juan, who does scheduling is the best as well….always one step ahead in communicating schedules and everything else. I am very impressed with how well they all work as a team. The most important part, though, is that mom is happy! Thank you ABC!”

“Above and Beyond I was driving in a panic from Washington to California because my mother was in crisis, she has dementia and her partner/care giver was taken to the hospital and not expected to recover. From the moment of contact while driving through mountains with terrible cell service Sandra and Moses took the situation in hand and offered solutions and managed to obtain a nurse for that very night with such short notice of only 3 hours and we needed care for 12 hour shifts. They were so compassionate and supportive and made us feel safe. Mom is 88 years old and can be quite difficult in the best of times, she really liked the nurses and wanted them to come back. Anyone needing Nursing services should call Always Best Care they are top notch. Thank you again for the amazing service!”

What is Non-Medical Senior Care in Yucca Valley, CA?

lm-check

Home is where the heart is. While that saying can sound a tad cliche, it is especially true for many seniors living in America. When given a choice, older adults most often prefer to grow older at home. An AARP study found that three out of four adults over the age of 50 want to stay in their homes and communities as they age.

lm-check

When you begin to think about why, it makes sense. Home offers a sense of security, comfort, and familiarity.

lm-check

The truth is, as we age, we begin to rely on others for help. When a family is too busy or lives too far away to fulfill this role, in-home senior care is often the best solution. Home care services allow seniors to enjoy personal independence while also receiving trustworthy assistance from a trained caregiver.

lm-check

At Always Best Care, we offer a comprehensive range of home care services to help seniors stay healthy while they get the help they need to remain independent. As your senior loved one gets older, giving them the gift of senior care is one of the best ways to show your love, even if you live far away.

Respite Care

Respite Care Services

According to AARP, more than 53 million adults living in the U.S. provide care to someone over 50 years old. Unfortunately, these caregivers experience stress, exhaustion, and even depression. Our respite care services help family caregivers address urgent obligations, spend time with their children, and enjoy nearby activities. Perhaps more importantly, respite care gives family members time to recharge and regroup. Taking personal time to de-stress reduces the risk of caregiver burnout. So, if you've always wanted to eat at the local The Copper Room or visit Historic Tractor, don't feel bad. Doing so is great for both you and your loved one.

At the end of the day, our goal is to become a valuable part of your senior's daily routine. That way, we may help give them the highest quality of life possible. We know that staying at home is important for your loved one, and we are here to help make sure that is possible.

If you have been on the fence about non-medical home care, there has never been a better time than now to give your senior the care, assistance, and companionship they deserve.

Aging in Place: The Preferred Choice for Most Seniors

While it's true that some seniors have complicated medical needs that prevent them from staying at home, aging in place is often the best arrangement for seniors and their families. With a trusted caregiver, seniors have the opportunity to live with a sense of dignity and do so as they see fit - something that is unavailable to many older people today.

In-home care makes it possible for millions of seniors to age in place every year. Rather than moving to a strange nursing home, seniors have the chance to stay at home where they feel the happiest and most comfortable.

Here are just a few of the reasons why older men and women prefer to age at home:

How much does a senior's home truly mean to them?

A study published by the American Society on Aging found that more than half of seniors say their home's emotional value means more than how much their home is worth in monetary value. It stands to reason, then, that a senior's home is where they want to grow old.

With the help of elderly care in Yucca Valley, CA, seniors don't have to age in a sterilized care facility. Instead, they can age gracefully in the place they want to be most: their home. In contrast, seniors who move to a long-term care facility must adapt to new environments, new people, and new systems that the facility implements. At this stage in life, this kind of drastic change can be more harmful than helpful.

Institutional care facilities like nursing homes often put large groups of people together to live in one location. On any given day, dozens of staff members and caregivers run in and out of these facilities. Being around so many new people in a relatively small living environment can be dangerous for a seniors' health and wellbeing. When you consider that thousands of seniors passed away in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, opting for in-home care is often a safer, healthier choice for seniors.

Aging in place has been shown to improve seniors' quality of life, which helps boost physical health and also helps insulate them from viral and bacterial risks found in elderly living facilities.

For many seniors, the ability to live independently with assistance from a caregiver is a priceless option. With in-home care, seniors experience a higher level of independence and freedom - much more so than in other settings like a nursing home. When a senior has the chance to age in place, they get to live life on their own terms, inside the house that they helped make into a home. More independence means more control over their personal lives, too, which leads to increased levels of fulfillment, happiness, and personal gratification. Over time, these positive feelings can manifest into a healthier, longer life.

More independence, a healthier life, and increased comfort are only a few benefits of aging in place. You have to take into consideration the role of cost and convenience. Simply put, it's usually easier and more affordable to help seniors age in place than it is to move them into an institutional care facility. According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, seniors who age in the comfort of their homes can save thousands of dollars per month.

In-home care services from Always Best Care, for instance, are often less expensive than long-term solutions, which can cost upwards of six figures per year. To make matters worse, many residential care facilities are reluctant to accept long-term care insurance and other types of payment assistance.

With Always Best Care's home care services, seniors and their families have a greater level of control over their care plans. In-home care gives seniors the chance to form a bond with a trusted caregiver and also receive unmatched care that is catered to their needs. In long-term care facilities, seniors and their loved ones have much less control over their care plan and have less of a say in who provides their care.

Affordable Care

In-home care is a valuable resource that empowers seniors to age in place on their own terms. However, a big concern for many families and their loved ones is how much in-home care costs. If you're worried that in-home care is too expensive, you may be pleasantly surprised to learn that it is one of the most affordable senior care arrangements available.

Typically, hiring an Always Best Care in-home caregiver for a few hours a week is more affordable than sending your loved one to a long-term care facility. This is true even for seniors with more complex care needs.

At Always Best Care, we will work closely with you and your family to develop a Care Plan that not only meets your care needs, but your budget requirements, too. Once we discover the level of care that you or your senior need, we develop an in-home care plan that you can afford.

In addition to our flexible care options, families should also consider the following resources to help offset potential home care costs:

If your loved one qualifies, Medicaid may help reduce in-home care costs. Review your CA's Medicaid program laws and benefits, and make sure your senior's financial and medical needs meet Medicaid eligibility requirements.
Attendance and aid benefits through military service can cover a portion of the costs associated with in-home care for veterans and their spouses.
Many senior care services like in-home care are included in long-term care insurance options. Research different long-term care solutions to find a plan that provides coverage for senior care.
Home care can be included as part of a senior's private insurance plan. Read over your loved one's insurance policy carefully or speak with their insurance provider to determine if in-home care is covered.
Depending on the life insurance plan, you may be able to apply your policy toward long-term care. You may be able to use long-term-care coverage to help pay for in-home elderly care.

Compassionate Care. Trusted Caregivers.

When you or your senior loved one needs assistance managing daily tasks at home, finding a qualified caregiver can be challenging. It takes a special kind of person to provide reliable care for your senior loved one. However, a caregiver's role involves more than meal preparation and medication reminders. Many seniors rely on their caregivers for companionship, too.

Our companion care services give seniors the chance to socialize in a safe environment and engage in activities at home. These important efforts boost morale and provide much-needed relief from repetitive daily routines. A one-on-one, engaging conversation can sharpen seniors' minds and give them something in which to be excited.

At Always Best Care, we only hire care providers that we would trust to care for our own loved ones. Our senior caregivers in Yucca Valley, CA understand how important it is to listen and communicate with their seniors. A seemingly small interaction, like a short hug goodbye, can make a major difference in a senior's day. Instead of battling against feelings of isolation, seniors begin to look forward to seeing their caregiver each week.

Understanding the nuances of senior care is just one of the reasons why our care providers are so great at their job.

Unlike some senior care companies, our caregivers must undergo extensive training before they work for Always Best Care. In addition, our caregivers receive ongoing training throughout the year. This training ensures that their standard of care matches up to the high standards we've come to expect. During this training, they will brush up on their communication skills, safety awareness, and symptom spotting. That way, your loved one receives the highest level of non-medical home care from day one.

Assisted Living Referral Services

While it's true that many seniors prefer to age at home, sometimes in-home care isn't the best fit. For those seniors and their families, choosing an assisted living facility makes more sense. Unfortunately, finding the optimal care facility is easier said than done in today's day and age. That's when Always Best Care's assisted living referral services begin to make a lot of sense.

Assisted living is a form of housing intended for seniors who require varying degrees of medical and personal attention. Accommodations may include single rooms, apartments, or shared living arrangements. Assisted living communities are typically designed to resemble a home-like environment and are physically constructed to encourage the independence of residents.

Respite Care Yucca Valley, CA

At assisted living communities, seniors receive help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and eating. They may also benefit from coordination of services with outside healthcare providers, and monitoring of resident activities to ensure their health, safety, and well-being. Caregivers who work at assisted living communities can also provide medication administration and personal care services for older adults.

Other services offered within assisted living communities can include some or all of the following:

  • Housekeeping
  • Laundry
  • Recreational Activities
  • Social Outings
  • Emergency Medical Response
  • Medication Monitoring
  • Family Visitation
  • Personal Care
 Caregivers Yucca Valley, CA

At Always Best Care, our representatives can match your senior's emotional, physical, and financial needs with viable assisted living communities nearby. Results are based on comparative data, so you can select the best choice for you or your loved one.

Always Best Care works closely with local senior living communities to gain valuable knowledge that we then use to help seniors and their loved ones make informed decisions. This information can include basic care and rent, resident availability, and services provided. Because Always Best Care is compensated by these communities, we provide senior living referral services at no extra cost to you.

Some of the most popular assisted living communities to consider in our area include the following:

  • Angelic Mansions Assisted Living - Yucca Valley
  • Ingleside Lodge Assisted Living
  • Jasmin Terrace at Yucca Valley
  • Aaspen Village Care
  • Aaspen Village Care
  • Indian Canyon Post Acute Care Center

“I’ve gotten a lot better with the anxiety and nervousness of playing live these days,” Maker shared over a phone call before the duo hit the stage at La Cigale in Paris. “I had to find ways to get out of my head because I used to hate going on stage to play. But I’ve learned to disconnect from what we’re doing a little bit because once you’re up there, you can’t get out of it, so I’ve learned to train myself on that.

“Last night, we played in Amsterdam, and the crowd was singing back our lyrics, which is pretty mental for us because we haven’t really made music like that,” Maker continued

The duo got its start in the London underground electronic music scene, forming what the world knows now as Mount Kimbie nearly 15 years ago. These days, the group is influenced by everything, from techno to dubstep, post-punk to hip-hop, R&B to ambient lo-fi and a handful of uncut DJ mixes that have floated throughout the internet, all intertwining to make up a sound the two consider “forever changing,” a superpower of sorts since having a definite sound has never been Mount Kimbie’s niche.

However, in 2016 the band announced it would go on hiatus; the two felt it was time to dabble in other ventures while allowing each other to grow. That break ended up lasting five years during which Campos delved into DJ culture and Maker produced the likes of Rosalía and SZA.

Reuniting in 2021, the group explored new musical territory for the newest record “The Sunset Violent.” The nine-track record, released in April of this year, is a mix of shoegaze and synthesized rock created while the duo were in Yucca Valley, California, a departure from its London roots. They felt it was necessary to seek refuge in the desert landscape, seeking peace, tranquility and as “a last minute effort to get away from all distractions.”

In the scorching summer heat, there wasn’t a clear goal, only the intent to potentially produce a track or two. But as they settled into a secluded Airbnb for six weeks, it became the ideal setting for crafting a California-tinged record, giving birth to what the world now knows as “The Sunset Violent.”

“The desert is probably the best place you could go when you want to get away,” Campos said. “We didn’t have a goal go out there; it was initially just to try and basically to come up with some ideas and we hadn’t worked together for about five years at this point. So there was quite a lot of uncertainty about what we were going to do and whether it was even going to be any good. But the landscape out there provided way more for us than we expected; it’s a very surreal place. It’s completely different from where we’re from and the music we make that was usually done in London. It was also the first time we were abroad to write. It was the perfect canvas and environment to write in, especially that the guitar was such a loud voice in this record, it made sense.”

Campos found himself drawn to the home radio, turning the knob that always happen to land on the local country music station. Inspired by the genre’s use of catchy melodies and profound lyricism, it influenced the direction the group was taking. “All of these elements combined created a rich tapestry of visuals that deeply influenced the entire body of work we created.”

The band, now expanded to a four-piece with the addition of Andrea Balency-Béarn and Marc Pell, is currently embarking on the Dumb Guitar Tour across the globe. The 15-date run includes a stop at The Fonda Theatre, originally slated for the El Rey. However, due to high fan demand for tickets, the venue size was expanded.

“The last time we played in Los Angeles was at the Masonic Lodge over at Hollywood Cemetery, and that felt like ages ago for us,” Maker shared with a laugh. “It’s hard to keep up with the times at this point. But having the interest that we do from the States in such a healthy way that we’ve seen over the years and especially with the comeback of this release has been so interesting and amazing for us to watch.”

For both Maker and Campos, performing in Southern California is a significant full-circle moment. For them, it’s an homage, a tribute and an opportunity to reconnect with the roots that initiated “The Sunset Violent.”

“Even the last three nights, there’s like a different level of understanding between us all as a band and when you get to the last few months you to start to really communicate in a nonverbal where you’re on stage kind of sharing experiences through music, it takes on another life,” Campos said. “And I think there’s something really special when it comes to sharing that, especially with an audience and certainly an area that allowed us to create what we do. I think that’s the whole point of it all for us.”

In one of the photographs, the sign is no taller than the sagebrush. It stands in the foreground, nailed to a weathered post, and reads, “Hidden Rancho.” In the distance, past a trio of Joshua trees, the house sits at the end of a white-sand road. My stepmother’s white Valiant is parked nearby. The house is small, flat-roofed, a hyphen in the expanse of the desert, set back from Highway 62 in a wash that runs along the Morongo Basin just west of Yucca Valley. The house is my father’s, where he lived during the years I rarely saw him—a place that was refuge from a string of disappointments, bad luck, and tragedy.

Like author Laila Lalami’s character Nora Guerraoui in The Other Americans, my father “never belonged to any tribe.” The son of immigrants, he was restless, seldom at home anywhere. His father, a baker and confectioner, was from Damascus, his mother Istanbul, and in the many houses where my father lived, there was an element of escape—from the past, from a history he didn’t want, and from the losses that led him to Yucca Valley, where for a time he was happy.

And like Nora’s father in The Other Americans, Driss Guerraoui, a student of Sartre and Lévinas turned business owner, my father was derailed from his youthful path. At 18, he was accepted to the Yale School of Architecture, but my grandfather, not knowing of Yale’s prestige, refused to pay the tuition. My father never returned to school, taking art classes at night instead. Like Driss, he worked many jobs to survive: freelance graphic design, coin-op laundry franchises, and later a mail-order business. When my sister and I were small, he worked from home, co-parenting us at a time when fathers rarely did. We lived in the foothills of Los Angeles then, in a canyon house my father loved. Alpine, rustic, spacious, with open-beam ceilings, the house’s rooms were paneled with silvered redwood, sandblasted until the grain ran like windblown sand. Then came the divorce, and visits from my sister and me were limited to weekends and two weeks in summer. In those years, the house was a respite, but in 1967, it was destroyed in a canyon fire fueled by the Santa Anas that come in October and send gusts ripping toward the mountains. After the fire, my father turned rootless, distant, and the once-regular visits with him became sporadic.

Bad luck and missed opportunities seemed to trail my father, and people inevitably disappointed him, so he came to rely on landscapes. He spoke often of the thin, clean air of the Sierra. The pretty western towns along the 395. The wildflowers on the desert floor of Borrego Springs and the red hills and scrub of the Morongo Basin. After the fire, he split his time between Yucca Valley and the apartment my stepmother, Hortensia Sandoval, kept in L.A. to be nearer to her teaching posts.

Was my father happy in Yucca Valley? In the ’60s and ’70s, the town was the province of white Americans, transplants from L.A. and the Midwest, the descendants of homesteaders. Some, it is documented, came by covered wagon from Fullerton. The farms were eventually parceled off into country clubs and strip malls like the one in Banning, where my father owned a coin laundry. He shared the local ethos of self-reliance and conservative politics, but as an Arab man, my father would have “stood out like a tall weed in a clipped hedge,” as Lalami describes Driss, and so he kept to himself on the property at the city’s west end off Pinon Drive, averse to the local pancake breakfasts and Fourth of July parades.

I visited the house in Yucca Valley only twice, in summer, when the heat bakes the ground and silences the landscape. It’s the silence I remember, and the cloying heat of the house’s small rooms. Like in Driss’s cabin, there was an atmosphere of temporariness: “a small kitchen, with two stools at the counter, and a Formica-topped table with an unsteady leg.” I recall my sister and me eating cereal from small boxes. The buzz of my father’s table saw in the desert. At 14, restless in the desert’s stillness, an afternoon I spent in the garage at a workbench, drawing in a sketchbook. Out the small window, the valley ran in a field of red earth dotted with Joshua trees I would one day write into a story as “shaggy silhouettes like unkempt boys loitering outside our door.”

I wish I’d spent more time there—wish I’d known a desert spring, or winter, when the air is sharp and clear—but after a decade, my father sold the house. There seemed to be money troubles, uncertainty about where he and Hortensia would live when he loved the wilderness and she the city. One winter, Hortensia snapped a photo of my father standing outside the house. In a rare snowfall, he’s sweeping snow off his car. Like the dim memories Nora’s Morocco-born sister, Salma, has of Casablanca, I hold memories of Yucca Valley, indelible images of the desert, and of my father, who in those years was a mystery. “How is it possible to miss someone you don’t remember?” Salma wonders. “And yet,” she says, “you do.”•

Join us on March 21 at 5 p.m. Pacific, when Lalami will appear in conversation with Alta Journal books editor and California Book Club guest host David L. Ulin and special guest Danzy Senna to discuss The Other Americans. Register for the Zoom conversation here.

The museum is situated close to the entrance of Joshua Tree National Park, which attracts over 3 million visitors a year to its otherworldly, enchanting desertscapes. It’s a popular place for night as well as day photographers.

Submitting a proposal

Most museums will have a proposal process. This is your pitch. Here, you describe what the exhibit is about, how many photos you have, what sizes they are, and other information. Quite often, there’s a very short form, which they can either email to you or have on their website.

While I did submit a proposal, my particular situation was easy. They were already familiar with my book “Abandoned Planes Trains and Automobiles: California Revealed”, published by Arcadia Publishing. They knew what it was about already. This made the proposal easier. I simply copied the description of the book, among other things, in the proposal.

Planning the exhibit

We discussed the exhibit at length, both in person and by email. The Museum Supervisor sent photos of other exhibits to give me an idea, also suggesting the amount of photos that might fit nicely in that space and the various sizes. I had a great deal of latitude in what sort of print I could create.

Signing the contract

After the museum accepted the proposal, they sent over a contract. This covered the dates that the exhibit would run, which would be about ten months later. The contract also discussed how they would care for the exhibit while it was in their care, finances, and other aspects you would anticipate to find in a contract. I signed this electronically and emailed it back, although I certainly could have signed it in person.

After the contract, I submitted an invoice for 25% of the total. They sent a check back within a few days.

Creating the prints

I was going to print up to 30 prints. I settled on 28, all different sizes, the largest ones being 20″ x 30″. They seemed to look good as matted color prints. Since the theme was planes, trains, and automobiles, I thought I would have at least one of each of these be the largest to serve as establishing photos. One plane, one train and one automobile.

The printing goes awry

I had tested one printer already, and was satisfied with the work that they did. However, when it came time to print, nothing on their website worked. It would just hang and do nothing. This was extremely frustrating. I contacted them, and they suggested several different approaches. Nothing worked.

I began searching to find another printer. I found Canvas Discount, which did all the printing in the United States and had strong reviews. They seemed to create quality prints while remaining within my budget. They didn’t offer a lot of options. For instance, they only offered acrylic glass, which is a little more prone to scratching. Still, the reviews were fantastic.

Thankfully, I had begun to attempt the prints well in advance of when I would need to get them to the museum. I still had some time.

I did two test prints with the new printer. They showed up just a few days later. The colors were beautiful and true, not too dull, but not too saturated either.

A clever idea

“Why don’t you create QR Codes and put them on the signs in the exhibit?” Tim Little offered this fantastic idea. I thought that was brilliant. I included them on three of the signs. The QR Codes led back to my website, where I had created a special gallery for the “Abandoned Planes Trains and Automobiles” exhibit.

Setting up the exhibit

This is probably the easiest part of this entire process. I had Canvas Discount mail all the photo prints to the museum. The Museum Supervisor had also asked about how I wanted the exhibit to appear and if I had any special requests. Their previous exhibits had looked great, so I said, “I think it would look best if I give you carte blanche. You have years of experience creating fantastic looking exhibits, and I do not.”

This follows a general philosophy that I have. Whether it was teaching, hiring people, or whatever, my philosophy has generally been, “Hire the best people, let them do their job, and stay out of their way.”

Opening Night

The extremely enjoyable opening night was on the 12th of January in 2024. I wrote some notes for my presentation, but would use them as reminders and launching points so I could speak more freely and spontaneously. The room was full of very friendly, inquisitive people, many of whom had traveled many miles to be there. This included my family. The people asked very astute, thoughtful questions. I even included short segments on how one light paints subjects, the general process of finding some of the locations, and more.

The audience as well as everyone at the museum were beyond friendly. The museum was extremely friendly and professional. This was about as great of an experience as I could have ever hoped for.

Museum Exhibit

The exhibit runs through the 16th of March 2024.

JOSHUA TREE — A dirt bike accident has left a man near death and a family facing an uncertain future.

Gary Austin, 22, was getting in one last ride Saturday, Nov. 4, at the Sunfair Dry Lake area of Joshua Tree when he crashed and hit his head on some rocks, said Ashley Garrett, who organized a GoFundMe drive to help his family.

“We were all together,” Garrett said of the accident, which took place at a get-together for employees of her business, Solar Now.

Everyone was packing up to leave, she said, when Austin said he had one bike that he had not gotten a chance to ride.

He was riding that bike, without a helmet, when he crashed and hit his head on some rocks.

“We don’t know what made him crash,” she said. “He got thrown from the bike, landed on the rocks; that caused his brain injuries.”

Garrett reported that Austin suffered significant brain bleeding and two fractures in his skull. Doctors, she said Wednesday, were keeping him alive long enough for family members to say their goodbyes.

Austin, she said, normally wore a helmet when riding.

“He is such a stickler on it,” she said.

Austin was lead technician at Solar Now and recently, the people of the Morongo Basin voted him one of the top three friendliest staff members of all businesses in the Hi-Desert Star and Desert Trail’s Best of the Best Awards.

His family includes his fiancée, Alyssa, and their two children, one 9 months old and the other 3 years old.

“He is the best father and provider ever. It’s so heartbreaking. We all love him so much,” his future mother-in-law, Nikki Schan, said.

Garrett is trying to help his family through the GoFundMe.

“He was only 22. He does have a fiancée. He leaves behind his two little girls. He was the sole provider,” she said.

“They are currently undergoing brain death studies and all family and friends are trying their best to keep strong and hopeful for Gary and his family,” Garrett wrote on the GoFundMe page.

“This GoFundMe page will hopefully take away some of the financial burden, resulting in reduced stress and Alyssa to be able to focus on being present with Gary and her children. All funds will go to Alyssa to help pay for her stay at the Hansen House while Gary is undergoing the brain studies, to help with gas, food, their mortgage and regular bills as this is not something she needs to stress or focus on right now.”

The fundraiser can be found online at gofundme.com/f/gary-austins-family. Cash donations to help Austin’s family may be made at Fred’s Tire at 55666 Yucca Trail, Suite D, in Yucca Valley.
