After all, senior citizens in the U.S. have worked tirelessly to build a better economy, serve their communities, and raise families.

“I just wanted to give Always Best Care a very well deserved 5 star review!! As children of seniors know, it can be a hard decision to entrust others outside of the family to provide love and care for your aging parent. However, Always Best Care of Indian Wells has been incredible in so many ways in helping facilitate home care service for my 100 year old mom. Sandra, their Care Coordinator, is an excellent communicator – patient and kind, resourceful and so very competent. Yvonne, mom’s caregiver, is loving and from our first meeting, she did those “little things” without being instructed that were important and mean so much. (Like checking dates on groceries, asking about parking so as to be considerate of the neighbors, having a routine for where to put things like mom’s keys, etc., and just focusing her attention on little things that were all about mom, etc. etc.) Moses, who installed mom’s AI devices was great as well – all smiles, so friendly and sweet to mom. And Juan, who does scheduling is the best as well….always one step ahead in communicating schedules and everything else. I am very impressed with how well they all work as a team. The most important part, though, is that mom is happy! Thank you ABC!”

“Above and Beyond I was driving in a panic from Washington to California because my mother was in crisis, she has dementia and her partner/care giver was taken to the hospital and not expected to recover. From the moment of contact while driving through mountains with terrible cell service Sandra and Moses took the situation in hand and offered solutions and managed to obtain a nurse for that very night with such short notice of only 3 hours and we needed care for 12 hour shifts. They were so compassionate and supportive and made us feel safe. Mom is 88 years old and can be quite difficult in the best of times, she really liked the nurses and wanted them to come back. Anyone needing Nursing services should call Always Best Care they are top notch. Thank you again for the amazing service!”

What is Non-Medical Senior Care in Thousand Palms, CA?

lm-check

Home is where the heart is. While that saying can sound a tad cliche, it is especially true for many seniors living in America. When given a choice, older adults most often prefer to grow older at home. An AARP study found that three out of four adults over the age of 50 want to stay in their homes and communities as they age.

lm-check

When you begin to think about why, it makes sense. Home offers a sense of security, comfort, and familiarity.

lm-check

The truth is, as we age, we begin to rely on others for help. When a family is too busy or lives too far away to fulfill this role, in-home senior care is often the best solution. Home care services allow seniors to enjoy personal independence while also receiving trustworthy assistance from a trained caregiver.

lm-check

At Always Best Care, we offer a comprehensive range of home care services to help seniors stay healthy while they get the help they need to remain independent. As your senior loved one gets older, giving them the gift of senior care is one of the best ways to show your love, even if you live far away.

Respite Care

Respite Care Services

According to AARP, more than 53 million adults living in the U.S. provide care to someone over 50 years old. Unfortunately, these caregivers experience stress, exhaustion, and even depression. Our respite care services help family caregivers address urgent obligations, spend time with their children, and enjoy nearby activities. Perhaps more importantly, respite care gives family members time to recharge and regroup. Taking personal time to de-stress reduces the risk of caregiver burnout. So, if you've always wanted to eat at the local Taqueria San Miguel or visit Cornelia White House, don't feel bad. Doing so is great for both you and your loved one.

At the end of the day, our goal is to become a valuable part of your senior's daily routine. That way, we may help give them the highest quality of life possible. We know that staying at home is important for your loved one, and we are here to help make sure that is possible.

If you have been on the fence about non-medical home care, there has never been a better time than now to give your senior the care, assistance, and companionship they deserve.

Aging in Place: The Preferred Choice for Most Seniors

While it's true that some seniors have complicated medical needs that prevent them from staying at home, aging in place is often the best arrangement for seniors and their families. With a trusted caregiver, seniors have the opportunity to live with a sense of dignity and do so as they see fit - something that is unavailable to many older people today.

In-home care makes it possible for millions of seniors to age in place every year. Rather than moving to a strange nursing home, seniors have the chance to stay at home where they feel the happiest and most comfortable.

Here are just a few of the reasons why older men and women prefer to age at home:

How much does a senior's home truly mean to them?

A study published by the American Society on Aging found that more than half of seniors say their home's emotional value means more than how much their home is worth in monetary value. It stands to reason, then, that a senior's home is where they want to grow old.

With the help of elderly care in Thousand Palms, CA, seniors don't have to age in a sterilized care facility. Instead, they can age gracefully in the place they want to be most: their home. In contrast, seniors who move to a long-term care facility must adapt to new environments, new people, and new systems that the facility implements. At this stage in life, this kind of drastic change can be more harmful than helpful.

Institutional care facilities like nursing homes often put large groups of people together to live in one location. On any given day, dozens of staff members and caregivers run in and out of these facilities. Being around so many new people in a relatively small living environment can be dangerous for a seniors' health and wellbeing. When you consider that thousands of seniors passed away in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, opting for in-home care is often a safer, healthier choice for seniors.

Aging in place has been shown to improve seniors' quality of life, which helps boost physical health and also helps insulate them from viral and bacterial risks found in elderly living facilities.

For many seniors, the ability to live independently with assistance from a caregiver is a priceless option. With in-home care, seniors experience a higher level of independence and freedom - much more so than in other settings like a nursing home. When a senior has the chance to age in place, they get to live life on their own terms, inside the house that they helped make into a home. More independence means more control over their personal lives, too, which leads to increased levels of fulfillment, happiness, and personal gratification. Over time, these positive feelings can manifest into a healthier, longer life.

More independence, a healthier life, and increased comfort are only a few benefits of aging in place. You have to take into consideration the role of cost and convenience. Simply put, it's usually easier and more affordable to help seniors age in place than it is to move them into an institutional care facility. According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, seniors who age in the comfort of their homes can save thousands of dollars per month.

In-home care services from Always Best Care, for instance, are often less expensive than long-term solutions, which can cost upwards of six figures per year. To make matters worse, many residential care facilities are reluctant to accept long-term care insurance and other types of payment assistance.

With Always Best Care's home care services, seniors and their families have a greater level of control over their care plans. In-home care gives seniors the chance to form a bond with a trusted caregiver and also receive unmatched care that is catered to their needs. In long-term care facilities, seniors and their loved ones have much less control over their care plan and have less of a say in who provides their care.

Affordable Care

In-home care is a valuable resource that empowers seniors to age in place on their own terms. However, a big concern for many families and their loved ones is how much in-home care costs. If you're worried that in-home care is too expensive, you may be pleasantly surprised to learn that it is one of the most affordable senior care arrangements available.

Typically, hiring an Always Best Care in-home caregiver for a few hours a week is more affordable than sending your loved one to a long-term care facility. This is true even for seniors with more complex care needs.

At Always Best Care, we will work closely with you and your family to develop a Care Plan that not only meets your care needs, but your budget requirements, too. Once we discover the level of care that you or your senior need, we develop an in-home care plan that you can afford.

In addition to our flexible care options, families should also consider the following resources to help offset potential home care costs:

If your loved one qualifies, Medicaid may help reduce in-home care costs. Review your CA's Medicaid program laws and benefits, and make sure your senior's financial and medical needs meet Medicaid eligibility requirements.
Attendance and aid benefits through military service can cover a portion of the costs associated with in-home care for veterans and their spouses.
Many senior care services like in-home care are included in long-term care insurance options. Research different long-term care solutions to find a plan that provides coverage for senior care.
Home care can be included as part of a senior's private insurance plan. Read over your loved one's insurance policy carefully or speak with their insurance provider to determine if in-home care is covered.
Depending on the life insurance plan, you may be able to apply your policy toward long-term care. You may be able to use long-term-care coverage to help pay for in-home elderly care.
 Senior Care Thousand Palms, CA

Compassionate Care. Trusted Caregivers.

When you or your senior loved one needs assistance managing daily tasks at home, finding a qualified caregiver can be challenging. It takes a special kind of person to provide reliable care for your senior loved one. However, a caregiver's role involves more than meal preparation and medication reminders. Many seniors rely on their caregivers for companionship, too.

Our companion care services give seniors the chance to socialize in a safe environment and engage in activities at home. These important efforts boost morale and provide much-needed relief from repetitive daily routines. A one-on-one, engaging conversation can sharpen seniors' minds and give them something in which to be excited.

At Always Best Care, we only hire care providers that we would trust to care for our own loved ones. Our senior caregivers in Thousand Palms, CA understand how important it is to listen and communicate with their seniors. A seemingly small interaction, like a short hug goodbye, can make a major difference in a senior's day. Instead of battling against feelings of isolation, seniors begin to look forward to seeing their caregiver each week.

Understanding the nuances of senior care is just one of the reasons why our care providers are so great at their job.

Unlike some senior care companies, our caregivers must undergo extensive training before they work for Always Best Care. In addition, our caregivers receive ongoing training throughout the year. This training ensures that their standard of care matches up to the high standards we've come to expect. During this training, they will brush up on their communication skills, safety awareness, and symptom spotting. That way, your loved one receives the highest level of non-medical home care from day one.

Assisted Living Referral Services

While it's true that many seniors prefer to age at home, sometimes in-home care isn't the best fit. For those seniors and their families, choosing an assisted living facility makes more sense. Unfortunately, finding the optimal care facility is easier said than done in today's day and age. That's when Always Best Care's assisted living referral services begin to make a lot of sense.

Assisted living is a form of housing intended for seniors who require varying degrees of medical and personal attention. Accommodations may include single rooms, apartments, or shared living arrangements. Assisted living communities are typically designed to resemble a home-like environment and are physically constructed to encourage the independence of residents.

Respite Care Thousand Palms, CA

At assisted living communities, seniors receive help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and eating. They may also benefit from coordination of services with outside healthcare providers, and monitoring of resident activities to ensure their health, safety, and well-being. Caregivers who work at assisted living communities can also provide medication administration and personal care services for older adults.

Other services offered within assisted living communities can include some or all of the following:

  • Housekeeping
  • Laundry
  • Recreational Activities
  • Social Outings
  • Emergency Medical Response
  • Medication Monitoring
  • Family Visitation
  • Personal Care
 Caregivers Thousand Palms, CA

At Always Best Care, our representatives can match your senior's emotional, physical, and financial needs with viable assisted living communities nearby. Results are based on comparative data, so you can select the best choice for you or your loved one.

Always Best Care works closely with local senior living communities to gain valuable knowledge that we then use to help seniors and their loved ones make informed decisions. This information can include basic care and rent, resident availability, and services provided. Because Always Best Care is compensated by these communities, we provide senior living referral services at no extra cost to you.

Some of the most popular assisted living communities to consider in our area include the following:

  • Mission Hills Senior Living
  • Senior Hope Manor
  • Pacifica Senior Living Palm Springs
  • Atria Rancho Mirage
  • The Carlotta, Ivy Signature Living
  • Stonewall Gardens Assisted Living
Home Care Thousand Palms, CA

For many seniors, moving into a senior living community revolves around how and when they want to make a transition to more involved care. A storage facility for RV or classic car owners is in the works.

The proposed facility by Bighorn Motorsport Condos will sit up in Thousand Palms, off of the Bob Hope exit.

It won’t be a residential complex, but rather a place for owners of classic cars, RVs or multiple cars to store it or work on it in a climate-controlled space.

Local resident Karl Holt has owned the 12-acre lot for 6 years. He said he originally wanted to turn it into his future retirement home, but said bigger plans took its place. “I just had too many cars," Holt explained, "Asking so many friends who leave for the summer, can I use your garage? And I just got tired of that. And so, I found this property and talking to other friends, and they all wanted a place. And I said, well, you know, maybe I need to look at the best usage of the property. And here we are.”

Holt is the Owner and Developer of Bighorn Motorsport Condos. He believes there’s a need for a storage facility like this one. “There's so many country club homes here and so many other homes, they just don't have a place to put their motor home or what have you," Holt said. "People come out here, even if they don't have a home, they'll be coming out here and keeping this up. And of course, the RV industry has exploded since COVID. And we really do need a few more of these.”

It’s projected to have about 180 units, with a variety of choices including a one-story option.

“Some that are just single, so that if you just have a motorhome or three cars or something. They're 15 feet wide and 70 feet deep, so... you're not forced to buy a large unit.”

Others will be much bigger with a two-story option. “They're 70 feet long, and they're 24 feet wide. But they also have an upstairs for living quarters, whatever," Holt added, "We also have what I call the collection units. And they're 7,000 feet downstairs, and 3,500 feet upstairs, and they're really special, special places.”

Located right off Interstate 10, Holt said the location of this site is part of what makes it so special. “It's Central Valley location... which is important that you can you know, exchange and get in and out pretty quickly," he explained, "We have unobstructed mountain views. I will say that the majority of people that buy here, even though they have beautiful homes with nice views, they'll have a better view here in their storage condo than they will at their home.”

The development is still in the permitting process. Bighorn Motorsport Condos have proposed it to the Thousand Palms Community Council. They're now waiting to take it to the county for approval.

Where to enter the arena

Once you’ve arrived at Acrisure Arena, make your way to the main entrance on the Northeast side, facing the Little San Bernardino Mountains. The box office and some outdoor concessions are also located at that area, in case you need to grab your tickets there and want to avoid the lines at the indoor concessions before the event starts.

Check out the arena merchandise store

One place to visit once inside is the arena store, which will serve as the Firebirds' team store on game days and will include exclusive items and apparel that cannot be found elsewhere, even at the online team store and at the official Firebirds’ store on El Paseo in Palm Desert.

In addition to the team store, there will be three merchandising kiosks inside the arena that will include everything from authentic and replica jerseys, hats, shirts, tank tops, golf shirts and dozens of other items.

For concerts, the store and kiosks will be places you'll be able to get merchandising.

Firebirds players to watch

Sweden’s Jesper Frödén, who led the team with seven goals and added six assists through the Firebirds’ first 10 games, was the AHL’s player of the month in October. Wisconsin native Max McCormick, who has played 72 NHL games during his playing career and recorded three goals and 10 assists through the first 10 games, is the team’s captain.

New York native Andrew Poturalski led the team with 13 assists and added five goals in the team’s first 10 games. Kole Lind, a Saskatchewan native, recorded six goals and eight assists through the team’s first 10 games.

Joey Daccord is the starting goalie. The Boston native has allowed 3.26 goals over his first four games this season, and won his lone game in the NHL, with the Seattle Kraken, this season.

Important dates

Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle will open Acrisure Arena with a comedy show Dec. 14. The Doobie Brothers will kick off a concert series with a soft launch of the arena Dec. 15.

Regional Mexican band Grupo Firme will follow with a performance Dec. 16, and the Firebirds will play their first game inside the arena at 6 p.m. Dec. 18 versus the Tucson Roadrunners. They will also play the Roadrunners on Tuesday, Dec. 20 at 7 p.m.

After traveling to play the Henderson Silver Knights on Dec. 22, the Firebirds return home to play the Silver Knights on Dec. 23. The Firebirds will then be on the road until Jan. 4 versus the Colorado Eagles and Jan. 7 versus the San Jose Barracuda and Jan. 8 against the Ontario Reign.

The Firebirds also host games Jan. 10 versus the Barracuda, Jan. 13 against the Bakersfield Condors, and Jan. 16 versus the Roadrunners, to conclude a six-game home stretch.

Maroon 5 will headline the arena's New Year's Eve event Dec. 31. The Eagles will play at the arena Jan. 18 for the "official opening night concert."

Acrisure Arena, now completed and sitting along the north side of Interstate 10, is hard to miss for frequent travelers through the Coachella Valley — but where exactly has the $500 million project been built?

At least three names have been given for the location at different times — Thousand Palms, Palm Desert and “Greater Palm Springs” — so it can get confusing. And there's even a fourth possibility: Cathedral City.

The arena, which will host the valley’s new minor league hockey team, along with plenty of other entertainers, was originally slated for downtown Palm Springs, but the plan faced hurdles due to concerns about traffic and parking in the bustling tourist area. The COVID-19 pandemic also forced the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians to leave the project.

Music industry titan Irving Azoff, a leading partner in developing the arena, said at the site’s ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday there was “big pressure” to move the project outside the Coachella Valley after the plan in Palm Springs fell through.

Instead, in 2020, arena officials managed to move their project to the mid-valley on an unincorporated piece of land owned by the H.N. and Frances Berger Foundation, located just across the freeway from Palm Desert.

The project, which won unanimous approval from the Riverside County Board of Supervisors last year, is located within the official boundaries of Thousand Palms, an unincorporated area with nearly 8,000 residents.

However, the arena has a Palm Desert address listed on its website, and the U.S. Postal Service also lists its address as in Palm Desert.

That’s because the arena’s ZIP code, 92211, largely covers Palm Desert, meaning any place in that postal code has the city in its address. Joyce Szudzik, the arena’s vice president of marketing, noted a similar dynamic with the adjacent Classic Club north of the interstate.

“It has to do with the post office that services us, and the smaller Thousand Palms post office cannot handle a business of our size,” Szudzik said.

But while the arena’s Palm Desert address is more a technicality than a straightforward truth at this point, the land where it sits could someday be incorporated within the city’s limits.

Thomas Soule, a Palm Desert city spokesperson, told The Desert Sun there has been some discussion within city hall about annexing the arena site, “but no action steps have been taken at this point.”

“I expect this may be a topic on the table when council meets to discuss its goals for the coming year,” Soule said. “That meeting will be sometime in early 2023, so we’ll know more at that point.”

As if the Palm Desert-Thousand Palms dynamic wasn’t enough, one other municipality — Cathedral City — also has some stake in the area. The arena, despite being about 10 miles east of city limits, falls within Cathedral City’s county-designated “sphere of influence,” which identifies areas of future growth and possible annexation.

The Cathedral City Council has had recent discussions about possibly annexing Thousand Palms into its borders. But Mayor Rita Lamb said any plans are still in the research phase, and the city has not gone forward with any actions or community outreach.

Riverside County’s Local Agency Formation Commission, or LAFCO, makes decisions over local annexations, as well as incorporations, special district formations and agency consolidations, among other tasks. The commission, which includes county, city and special agency representatives, meets monthly.

Meanwhile, when the arena opened Wednesday night with a Chris Rock-Dave Chappelle concert, the company that runs it sent out a press release entitled, “Acrisure Arena in Greater Palm Springs officially opens its doors.”

Desert Sun staff writers Andrew John and Ani Gasparyan contributed to this report.

Every spring, swarms of orange butterflies take over Southern California. The annual migration of painted lady butterflies (Vanessa cardui) usually peaks in mid-March. That's when they leave their winter residence in western Mexico and head to the Pacific Northwest for the summer to breed.

Butterflies are often spotted around Los Angeles, San Diego, and Santa Barbara. Their largest congregations can be witnessed where wildflowers grow, like in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, the Coachella Valley, and in particular, Thousand Palms Preserve. Butterflies love nectar from desert plants such as thistles or mallows that are abundant there. The largest number of painted lady butterflies arrive in the years of desert super-blooms. A super-bloom usually follows a wet and rainy winter. In 2005, over a billion butterflies were registered in Southern California. Vanessa cardui is famous for its bright orange coloring and ability to cover long distances. It has been seen as far north as Alaska. The biggest hazard for painted ladies, as well as for other butterflies, is the heavy use of pesticides by farmers in fields and private gardens. Their population is also threatened by global warming.

Practical info

The painted lady butterfly migration is at its peak during mid-March when they move from their winter location in western Mexico to the Pacific Northwest. In years of desert super-bloom, the number of painted lady butterflies is even more prominent as they have enough nectar to breed. In 2005, over a billion butterflies migrated to Southern California.

LA, San Diego, and Santa Barbara are some areas where you can spot the painted lady butterflies. However, the ideal place to spot them is in areas where wildflowers grow like at the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, the Coachella Valley, and Thousand Palms Preserve. The Thousand Palms Preserve is popular due to the nectar-rich desert plants like thistles and mallows present there.

The painted lady butterfly passes through California when they move between their winter location in western Mexico and the breeding grounds of the Pacific Northwest. Their stay in California is short as they have to continue their journey. However, in years of desert super-bloom, they tend to remain in California for longer periods since the conditions are favorable for breeding and laying eggs.

The painted lady butterfly prefers the nectar of the thistles or mallows present in the desert regions of California. Other places they can be found are around wildflower blooms where they can feed on nectar from a range of diverse flowers such as asters, lilies, and clovers that are grown in farmers' fields to promote butterfly conservation and support their populations.

Climate change due to global warming can cause alterations in migratory behavior and breeding which can affect the painted lady butterfly population; consequently, their populations are declining. Drought, extreme temperature, and changes in vegetation patterns are the factors that affect their survival. Development, deforestation, and habitat fragmentation in open land also contribute to their decline. Conserving open spaces, reducing the use of pesticides and herbicides, and planting butterfly-friendly plants can help reduce these threats.

Meteorologist Michael Estime shows us how much rain has already fallen across inland California and the rain still to come. California's unique geography is ringing out the storm's moisture against mountains, flooding desert towns.

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – A local emergency was declared in Palm Springs, California, Sunday afternoon as flash flooding from Hilary overwhelmed the city.

The desert resort city so far received more than a half-year's worth of rain in less than a day. As of early evening, the NWS recorded 2.64 inches since early morning. The city only sees an average of 0.14 inches each August and 4.61 inches a year. No monthly average exceeds 1.15 inches.

"Due to unprecedented rainfall and flooding of local roadways and at least one swift water rescue, City Manager Scott Stiles has declared a local emergency due to the critically dangerous impacts," announced the City of Palm Springs on X, the company formerly known as Twitter.

The city reported that 911 was down in the overnight hours.

Problematic Sunday as roads turn to rivers

The Palm Springs Fire Department shared a video of the raging wash over major city roads. They closed at least five roads because they were underwater.

TORRENTIAL RAIN FROM TROPICAL STORM HILARY CAUSES DANGEROUS MUDSLIDES, ROCKSLIDES IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

More cars in Palm Springs were trapped as well by floodwaters. Cars stalled, and drivers tossed off shoes and tried to help each other in the calf-deep water. This was the first-ever Tropical Storm Warning for Southern California.

First responders coming to the aid of those stranded by the flooding had some issues themselves. This ambulance looked more like it was on a log flume instead of a city street.

Roads became slick from the rain. A film of oil and the detergents in gasoline accumulates and coats the asphalt during the dry season. Before rain fell heavy enough to wash it away, the streets proved too slippery for this car.

Car parts floated down flooded streets in nearby Coachella.

"Yeah, we've got battle damage," commented @kangspace589 on X. "Pretty hectic."

A year of rain in one day

Sunday already set a record for the wettest August day in history for Palm Springs. The previous record has been held since 1930. And more rain is on the way. The FOX Forecast Center calls for 3 to 5 inches total for the city before Hilary departs.

The highest rainfall amounts are on the highest elevation of the mountains cradling Palm Springs and the entire Coachella Valley.

California's unique mountainous geography, which tourists and residents flock to enjoy, is working against the helpless desert valley.

Why are valleys hit so hard?

"That rain is going to be forced up along some of those mountains, especially east of San Diego," explained Meteorologist Michael Estime. "And that's going to create what we call orographic lift. And as moisture is lifted up the mountains, it's it is then going to condense, and it's going to get squeezed out like a wet washcloth over these areas again, east of the mountains."

The extreme wind gusts with Hilary, already up to 84 mph on Big Black Mountain, blow south-southwesterly and lift the moisture and heavy rain on normally dry west slopes, explained the FOX Weather Forecast Center.

Palm Springs sits at the foot of 10,000-foot Mount Jacinto, according to the Bureau of Tourism. Gravity will force the water downhill, where it will overwhelm already taxed spillways, washes and gullies.

Water exploded through a low-lying road so fast that this truck in Thousand Palms, part of the Coachella Valley, couldn't escape. The driver was trapped.
