Babe’s Bar-B-Que & Brewery is leaving The River in Rancho Mirage at the end of August. But if you'll still be hankering for its smoked meats, don’t fret: The restaurant plans to reopen in Indio at the start of next year.
The popular barbecue and beer spot, which has been operating in Rancho Mirage since 2002, announced its last day of business at The River will be Saturday, Aug. 31.
Babe’s will soon start a new era at the Canopy at Citrus development in Indio, located northeast of the corner of Jefferson Street and Avenue 50.
“Scheduled to open by January 2025, Babe’s Smokehouse & Tavern will retain much of the cherished interior charm of our original location while introducing an upscale, western country-club ambiance,” the restaurant’s owner, Lucky Callender, said in a social media post.
The new space will include two outdoor patios, indoor and outdoor bars and “a glass exhibition kitchen,” according to the social media post. The menu will include some new dishes, along with beloved Babe’s classics.
“The new location reflects a more sustainable model, with aspirations for (our) future growth,” Callender wrote. “We eagerly anticipate welcoming all Coachella Valley residents to our new home and are thrilled about this exciting transition to Indio.”
With the upcoming addition of Babe’s, the Canopy at Citrus shopping center will reach full occupancy, according to the real estate industry publication ConnectCRE. The space has already drawn Lunas Pizza Bar & Grill, Keedy’s On The Run, Coral Sushi & Sake Bar, Cork & Fork and Sumo Dog.
The Desert Sun was unable to immediately reach anyone from Babe’s to discuss the move. The barbecue spot’s departure leaves The River without one of its signature restaurants, though it still has Yard House, Five Guys, Sushi Kawa, The Cheesecake Factory, P.F. Chang’s and Apong’s Philly Steak, according to its website.
The River is seeing some new additions, too: A major entertainment brand, Dave & Buster’s, opened a 22,000-square-foot restaurant and arcade there last year. The River is also soon adding an REI store in a space that has sat vacant since Forever 21 closed there over four years ago.
The REI co-op store in Rancho Mirage is expected to open Oct. 4, according to the outdoor company’s website.
