After months of anticipation, the UK has just welcomed its first ever plant-based egg.
The American brand Just Egg, which already seems to be a household name in the US, has now officially launched this side of the Atlantic.
Made from mung beans, the product claims to look, cook and taste like eggs – minus the chickens. And with a steadily growing number of Brits exploring more sustainable, allergy-friendly or plant-forward diets, the arrival of this vegan egg couldn’t be more timely.
“We think there’s a huge pent-up demand for it,” says Matthew Glover, founder of Veganuary and chair of the Vegan Food Group, the team behind the UK rollout. “There’s not been anything like this on the market so far. So we’re very excited to launch it into the UK.”
Although headlines around the plant-based food industry often focus on falling sales or investor pullback, Glover sees that as a misread of the bigger picture.
“It’s challenging times,” he admits, “there’s been a lot of misinformation that has been shared. But in the US, Just Egg is very much a growing product. It has 99% of the plant-based egg market […] it’s one of the fastest-growing egg brands out there.”
And while veganism is often painted as a niche movement, this product is not just for the animal-free faithful: “[This] product is really for everybody, not just vegans, it’s for anybody that’s plant-curious,” says Glover, “there’s a lot of people that are allergic to eggs, so it’s perfect for those individuals.”
Diet restrictions due to intolerances or allergies is predicted to account for a lot of Just Eggs market.
Nutritionist and author Rhiannon Lambert sees it as a potential game-changer for people with allergies or restrictions and anyone hoping to improve their health without giving up familiar comfort foods.
The UK has some of the highest rates of allergic conditions in the world, with a staggering 44% of British adults suffering from at least one allergy, with 1 in 20 developing one to eggs. “So many people have different dietary requirements, and we’re looking for something that cooks in the same way, that’s better for the environment,” explains Lambert.
Lambert’s focus is on both nutrition and accessibility. “What’s been lacking in the past with alternatives for eggs is the fact that it’s really hard to get the texture that cooks well and get enough protein,” she says, “and per serving, this has 13 grams of protein.”
This is the closest a plant-based egg has been able to get, containing around 5.9 grams of protein ‘per egg’ compared to 6.3 grams in a chicken egg.
While nutrition is a key concern, many opting for this plant-based alternative will be doing it more for the planet as opposed to their health.
The egg industry has recently made moves to develop carbon-neutral farming methods, like off-setting the emissions produced during the production process, but experts remain unconvinced.
“Over 40 percent of the pollution in the UK rivers comes from poultry – that’s both egg production and chicken production,” says Glover. “We don’t have any of those associated pollution problems with a vegan egg.”
For Lambert, the environmental conversation goes beyond carbon offsetting. “It’s the land use that comes with eggs as well,” she says. “This has been made from mung beans […] we’re looking at water saving every year for the planet, which is exceptional.”
Abigail Nelson-Ehoff, who leads marketing at Vegan Food Group, says “it takes 53 gallons of water per egg to be able to produce it. That’s from the feed that’s needed – not just that individual chicken, but all of the feed and the water that can go into growing the feed.”
Instead of importing the product from the US – which would inflate its price and carbon footprint – the company has started production in Europe.
“That allows us to make sure we’re investing in price from our side,” Nelson-Ehoff explains. “We can bring this to the consumer at a price that is feasible […] it will be £3.99 for a pack.”
Despite the boom-and-bust narrative around plant-based products, Nelson-Ehoff sees this moment not as a dip, but a transition. “We’re probably the youngest category […] and if you think of that bell curve of early adopters, we feel we are at the point where it starts to plateau into more of a regular state.”
Flexitarianism – or simply eating more plants without going fully vegan or vegetarian – continues to trend upward. And for Nelson-Ehoff and her team, the arrival of a credible egg replacement offers more than a novelty.
“Talking to parents with children who are egg intolerant […] people who, from a lifestyle point of view, can discover that the health side of things is going to be really exciting,” she says. “Certainly, bringing this to the vegan community is amazing – but this is a product that could mean something to so many more people.”
So as Brits continue to grapple with cost-of-living pressures, sustainability concerns and healthy but affordable food options, the arrival of a plant-based egg could be a timely blessing.
So whether you’re vegan, egg-allergic or simply curious about cutting down on animal products – this invention marks a significant shift in what’s possible on the British breakfast plate.
And as the conversation around sustainable food continues to evolve, this mung bean-based newcomer could well become a staple in kitchen cupboards across the country.
The proof, however, will be in the frying pan.

He said it was part of a wider issue, referencing the alcohol ban at football matches, which is not in place for rugby, which he also described as “snobby”.
Speaking at the Fringe, comedian Matt Forde told Mr Murray the council was not “excited” about Oasis after it suggested the city should be “prepared for an influx of overweight, middle-aged men who drink too much”.
Mr Murray joked the description “sounds like a full council meeting”, before adding: “I think it’s snobby.
“I mean, Murrayfield is a great example. You can go and see Scotland versus the All Blacks on a Saturday at three o’clock and get as ratted as you want sitting watching the rugby, and people do, they spend most of their time at the bar.
“And I remember my team, Hearts, played Celtic there the following day on the Sunday, when Hampden was out of use for the Commonwealth Games, and there was a complete ban on drinking in the stands for the football fans. That’s just classist and snobbery.”
Asked if he wanted to bring back drinking at football stadiums, the Scottish Secretary joked it was either that “or not have rugby drinking”.
In June, Edinburgh council came under fire from Oasis fans, and the band itself, after safety briefings showed officials’ concerns about the crowds descending on the city for the group’s performance at Murrayfield, which clashes with the Fringe.
One note from the documents showed council officials warning that “middle-aged men take up more room, consider this when working out occupancy”.
Another detailed “concern about crowds of Oasis on weekends as they are already rowdy and the tone of the band”.
It added: “Concerned about the safety of the Fringe and its performers. Many performers are considering not attending for that weekend.”
One document suggested there would be “medium to high intoxication” at the concert, and to expect a “substantial amount of older fans”, but added there had been “minimal arrests” at recent events involving either of the Gallagher brothers.
Responding on social media at the time, Liam Gallagher said: “To the Edinburgh council I’ve heard what you said about Oasis fans and quite frankly your attitude f****** stinks I’d leave town that day if I was any of you lot.”
In a second post, he added: “I’d love to see a picture of all the people on the Edinburgh council bet there’s some real stunning individuals.”

James “Midge” Ure, 71, the frontman of electronic pop group Ultravox, whose track Vienna is among the most well-known songs of the 80s, explained that the health issue had been discovered during a recent routine check-up.
The rescheduled performances include dates in Australia, New Zealand, the US and Europe.
He said in a statement: “It is with great sadness and difficulty that I have to reschedule all shows planned from September onwards. During a recent routine check-up, doctors discovered a health issue that requires urgent treatment and a period of recovery.
“I know many of you travel great distances, often across borders to attend the shows, and I never take that support for granted. I’m truly sorry for any inconvenience or disruption this causes to your plans.
“I remain fully committed to performing all shows currently scheduled for this month and I’m looking forward to being out there with you for as long as I’m able.”
He reassured fans that his previously announced A Man Of Two Worlds Tour, due to take place in May and June of 2026, is “very much going ahead”.
Announced last month, the 2026 tour promises to offer a “rare and deeply personal concert experience” for fans by bringing together album favourites with “cinematic instrumentals”.
Ure’s statement continued: “I’m aiming to be back on the road again as soon as possible and looking forward to getting back out there and sharing this music with you all.
“My team and I are working closely with promoters to reschedule the affected dates, and we’ll share updates on my Facebook page as soon as we have them. I kindly ask that you respect the privacy of myself and my family during this difficult time.”
He ended the statement saying: “Thank you, as always, for your understanding, patience, and unwavering support. It truly means a great deal. With thanks and love, Midge.”

The regulator said Mr Black, who took over as chief executive in 2021 and had worked in various roles at Ofwat since 2012, had decided the time is right for him to pursue new opportunities.
He said: “I have been privileged to be able to lead Ofwat over the last four years, during which time we have achieved a huge amount together as a team for customers and the environment.
“The 2024 price review backed an investment programme of £104 billion, along with a further £50 billion investment in major new water resources, which will improve service, environmental outcomes and resilience in the years to come.
“I wish the team every success as they continue their important work.”
Under Government plans, measures will be rolled out to merge the regulatory responsibilities of four different bodies into one “single, powerful” regulator responsible for the whole sector.
Currently, the Environment Agency, Ofwat, Natural England and the Drinking Water Inspectorate all oversee different areas of the privatised sector.
The decision to pull them together came in response to an independent review by Sir Jon Cunliffe which called for the move, as one of 88 measures to tackle problems in the water sector.
The review was commissioned by the Government to answer public fury over the ailing state of the UK’s water industry.
Ofwat chairman Iain Coucher said: “David has worked, tirelessly, to bring about transformational change in the water sector.
“He has sought new regulatory powers and resources to hold companies to account, taken major enforcement action and provided funding and incentive packages that drive continual improvements for customers.
“On behalf of the board and everyone at Ofwat, I would like to thank David for his leadership and his service over the last 13 years and to wish him every success in the future.”
