WARRINGTON, PA — A bill aimed at keeping teenagers and young children safe on social media that was written by state Rep. Brian Munroe and three teenagers from Warrington was approved by the House Consumer Protection, Technology & Utilities Committee this week.
“We are one step closer today to helping to protect our children on social media as a result of this vote today,” Munroe said. “I look forward to the full House voting on this bill, which will hopefully happen shortly."
Munroe crafted the legislation after meeting Max Jin, Luka Jonjic and Dylan Schwartz when they were students at Tamanend Middle School in 2023. The three, who are now students at Central Bucks High School South, won an award from C-SPAN for their documentary, "America’s Silent Struggle: Social Media’s Impact on Teens’ Mental Health."
“I believe the movement of H.B. 2017 out of committee is a symbolic step toward a brighter future online,” Jinn said. “And I am grateful that we now have a direct opportunity to ensure the safety and mental well-being of our fellow teens when they use social media. It also provides me with a sense of hope that it is truly possible to instill meaningful change and that our actions today may help prevent harmful situations from taking place online in the future.”
House Bill 2017 is bipartisan legislation that would put the following safeguards in place:
“In many ways, social media has become an essential part of our daily lives, but its negative impact on our mental health is not fully recognized,” Jonjic said. “Through the passing of this bill, I hope that problems with mental health caused by social media can be prevented and that it gives us teenagers a space to safely express who we are.”
Added Schwartz, “This legislation means the world to me, as it stands for the hope that kids who are suffering as I had are going to be protected online. As well, it symbolizes the hope that other struggling teens can realize that there are people out there who care for them and want them to be safe.”
The bill now heads the full House chamber for consideration.

Shelley, who was formerly the managing director of PA’s stock imagery agency Alamy and a board member, began her career at PA as a graduate news production trainee.
She then worked in several editorial roles before launching a digital showbiz news service in 2006 as showbiz editor. She became features editor in 2007, before moving into various commercial and management positions within the business.
In 2013, Shelley helped to launch a content service for corporate clients; and was involved in the acquisition of content agency Sticky, then becoming its managing director. After six years at Sticky, she was appointed managing director at Alamy to lead the platform post-acquisition. In 2022, she was appointed to the PA Media Group board.
Shelley said: “When I joined PA as a grad trainee in 1999, I knew this was an organisation where I could build my career. It’s a huge honour to be given the opportunity to take charge of an organisation I love and a brilliant team I respect and care deeply about.
“In the rapidly changing media world PA’s combination of maintaining traditional journalistic excellence and embracing cutting-edge technological innovation is, in my view, key to our continued success.
“I’d like to thank Clive personally for his leadership and support and his role in overseeing our transformation from national news agency to international multimedia business.”

Everybody’s Hometown is debuting a new, environmentally-friendly tradition.
On Sept. 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Transition Town Greater Media, a local organization dedicated to addressing climate change and sustainability, is hosting its first annual EcoFest at Heritage Park in Media Borough.
“EcoFest is really our way of highlighting all the great environmental resources in the greater Media area, where we are pretty active,” said Shari Steuber, an initiating member of Transition Town Greater Media.
Organizers have planned family-friendly activities including food, music, a guided nature walk, and environmental resources.

There will be hands-on learning workshops such as how to replace plastic products with greener alternatives and what trees and shrubbery work best in a residential yard.
“We have a bunch of organizations coming with tables and information about what they’re doing and the kind of projects that they are putting out and kind of the outcomes that they’re hoping for,” Steuber said.
Steuber said various groups from across Delaware County are simply trying to make people aware of the actions they can take in their everyday lives to reduce their carbon footprint.
Organizations from Media and its surrounding communities are participating in the event including the Media Borough Environmental Advisory Council, Green Wagon Project, Tri-State Bird Rescue, Bee City, Greener Partners, the NAACP Media Area Branch, and others.
“There’s just so much going on around here and we were just kind of trying to bring it all together and let people know that it’s a great place to live if you want to learn how to be environmentally conscious,” Steuber said.

Media’s first EcoFest is the brainchild of Julie Smith, a volunteer with Transition Town Greater Media. Smith, who is also involved with Keep Media Green, has been active in preserving open space in the borough.
“In being part of Keep Media Green, I realized that there’s such a green community here, and the people are all working really hard,” Smith said. “But a lot of people work independently, the groups were working independently. And I was trying to figure out a way to bring people together and coordinate.”
Smith came up with the idea of an EcoFest while on a walk with a borough council member. She then turned to an organization with a track record of results.
“I brought it to Transition Town Greater Media, because I couldn’t figure out a way to actually make this happen, except with an organization behind me,” she said. “And they loved the idea and people got really excited about it — and it just blossomed from there.”
Smith hopes that this event demonstrates to attendees the value of an old mission statement she would see as a child at Gnome Countryside in Lancaster County: protect what you love.
“I realized if we’re going to fight for the environment and want to make things better, we have to show why you love what’s right outside of your door, why you want to protect it, and not only show them why, but make it fun and exciting,” she said.

MEDIA, Pa. (CBS) -- Jason Kelce might've gone viral for dancing at the Kansas City Chiefs' Super Bowl celebration, but it turns out his wife Kylie has a few moves of her own.
Kylie's though, have a distinctly Irish flair.
To celebrate St. Patrick's Day, the couple visited the Towne House in Media over the weekend. The Delaware County restaurant posted a series of photos, writing, "Sláinte and thanks to legendary EAGLE Jason Kelce and family(his wife is a helluva Irish dancer by the way) for joining us for a few scoops of the black stuff and a few ST. KELCE'S on this day where we all celebrate the wearing of the green!!! He was so generous and hospitable with his time for all the adoring fans in attendance."
Along with the photos, including many snaps of Jason posing with fans and pints of Guinness, Towne House included a clip of Kylie joining in on a quick Irish dance in front of a roaring St. Patrick's Day crowd.
Though she looked a little uncertain at the start, everyone watching went wild as soon as Kylie started dancing alongside performers from the McHugh School of Irish Dance. "You made this the best night ever for all of our dancers," the school posted on Facebook.
As if she wasn't already heralded as the Queen of Delco, the clip had plenty of people singing Kylie's praises in the comments section on Barstool Philly's Instagram page.
Messages like, "I think it's about time that the Kelce family be officially named the Royal Family of Philly," "She is a freaking national treasure," and "Duchess of Delco at it again."

The borough in Delaware County, about 20 miles south of Philadelphia, is understandably proud - the Media Little League team will play in the 2023 Little League World Series on opening day, Aug. 16, in South Williamsport.
Saturday night, before the recreation department offered a showing of the “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” at dusk at Barrall Field, residents were invited to help to make banners to “send Media Little League off in style.”
The Media team won the Mid-Atlantic region championship on Friday against Washington, D.C. The team will make its first Little World Series appearance against Needville, Texas, in the opening round.
The residents of Media, all 5,832 of them, will be cheering the team on.
Media is about the same size in population as the home of the most famous groundhog in Pennsylvania - Punxsutawney Phil. Punxsutawney has a population of about 5,636.
Media has about one-fifth of the population of Harrisburg and one-fourth of the population of Carlisle.
The borough offers a full schedule of yoga, pilates and zumba classes, pickup tennis matches and has held a “Dining Under the Stars” series of outdoor dining experiences during the summer on Wednesday nights since 2008.
If you are going to attend, the borough encourages you to use the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority to “avoid all the hassles of driving and parking in the borough. It’s good for you and good for the environment!”
Media is a suburb of Philadelphia.
According to Niche.com, Media “is one of the best places to live in Pennsylvania. Living in Media offers residents an urban suburban mix feel and most residents rent their homes. Many young professionals live in Media and residents tend to be liberal. The public schools in Media are highly rated.”
The borough says Media residents “proudly call Media ‘Everybody’s Hometown.’ This is much more than a slogan - it also describes a real state of mind.”
As the Little League World Series gets underway, fans may recall last year’s event that included a traumatic injury before it started.
Easton Oliverson, a player with the Snow Canyon All Stars from Santa Clara, Utah, was attending last year as the Mountain Region champion. Oliverson fell from his bunk bed in the player dorms on Aug. 5, 2022, fracturing his skull.
Oliverson was treated at Geisinger Janet Weis Children’s Hospital then transferred in late August to a facility in Salt Lake City.
In September 2022 the family filed a lawsuit against Little League Baseball Inc. and bunk bed maker, John Savoy & Son, doing business as Savoy Contract Furniture of Williamsport, Pa.
That lawsuit is continuing to unfold in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas. While the family has not issued an update on Oliverson for quite some time, the family’s attorney said this spring that the boy “will have issues the remainder of his life.”
