Discover Lansdale has announced the details for the 2023 Lansdale Zombie Walk, scheduled for the November First Friday on Nov. 3.

The fan favorite event will return with the full slate of zombie-themed contests and activities as well as the staple features of Lansdale First Fridays including food trucks, entertainment and the beer garden.

UNIQUE ACTIVITIES

Unique activities for the Lansdale Zombie Walk include:

STAGING AREA / FREE MAKEUP / FOOD DRIVE FOR MANNA

The staging area will be located at Century Plaza (100 West Main Street), and free makeup services will be offered from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Do not wait until the last minute for makeup, as the line always runs long.

Anyone who has not been provided makeup by the start time of the event will be given fake blood and turned into a survivor.

The free makeup and staging area will serve as a drop-off point for donations to Manna on Main Street. Guests who are receiving free makeup are asked to bring at least one non-perishable donation for the food drive, and other guests are welcome to bring donations as well. ZOMBIE WALK

Zombies will push off the staging area at 6:15 p.m. Zombies will walk down West Main Street to Wood Street, where they will then cross and walk to Railroad Plaza for the Thriller Dance and contest judging.

THRILLER DANCE

Upon the completion of the walk portion of the evening, DJ Chris Evans will jump right into the group Thriller Dance at Railroad Plaza. The dance portion is tentatively scheduled for 6:45 p.m.

CONTESTS AND TIMING

One of the hallmarks of the Lansdale Zombie Walk is the myriad contests and the high value of the prizes that are given to the winners. For this year, there will be a total of five contests:

For the Best Overall Zombie, Best Zombie Couple, Best Zombie Kid and Best Survivor categories, judging will occur at Railroad Plaza at 7 p.m. immediately following the Thriller Dance. Judging will be performed by event coordinators.

FOOD TRUCKS AND VENDORS

Organizers expect to have roughly seven food trucks, with another handful of non-vehicle food vendors throughout the event space.

Food trucks will be lined up single file on Madison Street at Railroad Plaza. Additionally, non-vehicle food vendors will be placed along South Wood Street and inside the beer garden at the West Main Lot.

ENTERTAINMENT

November First Friday will feature music at three locations: DJ Mixology on South Wood Street, DJ Chris Evans at Railroad Plaza, and DJ Tone Arm at the West Main Lot Beer Garden.

Music and performances will begin at each location around 6 p.m. and end at 9 p.m.

BEER GARDEN

The November First Friday Pop-Up Beer Garden lineup includes:

The West Main Lot Beer Garden will also feature tables and chairs, food offerings, and music. Additionally, alcoholic beverages will be available on South Wood Street, courtesy of Round House.

All guests must be 21+ to drink, and all drinks must remain in the event space where they were purchased. Carrying drinks from one location to another is strictly prohibited.

KIDS’ ZONE

For the November First Friday, Discover Lansdale has booked four zombie-themed activities that will be spread out across the event space. Those activities include bull riding, a Zombie Attack inflatable, a Zombie Bounce House, and a Zombie Maze.

Instead of charging fees for each specific attraction, guests will be required to purchase a $5 wristband at the Discover Lansdale tent at Railroad Plaza, which will allow guests unlimited access to the rides. Wristbands can also be purchased on South Wood Street.

In addition to the attraction, kids will be able to partake in free face painting, as well as balloon art courtesy of Scott Myers. There is no fee for face paint or balloon art, though tips are encouraged.

PHOTO SCAVENGER HUNT

The photo scavenger hunt has returned as a recurring activity for each First Friday in the 2023 season, with a winner being drawn at the end of each event.

Seven photos will be added to the Discover Lansdale Facebook page in the days leading up to the event. To participate, you must be able to identify all seven locations, write them down (along with your name and contact info), and submit it at the Discover Lansdale booth at Railroad Plaza by 9 p.m.

A winner will then be drawn at random, who will receive a gift worth $150 from a local sponsor (prizes will be announced in a separate article closer to the event).

TIMING, WEATHER, CONTACT INFO

First Fridays begin at 6 p.m. and end at 9 p.m. Road closures include South Wood Street from Main to Courtland, Madison Street from Main to the end of the one-way, and Susquehanna Ave. from Main to Courtland.

Should there be a threat of inclement weather, a decision will be announced by 1 p.m. regarding whether or not the event will be held. There is no rain date for First Fridays.

LANSDALE, PA — The Fourth of July is just around the corner, and there are numerous fireworks events around across Montgomery County.

There are numerous Independence Day fireworks shows, parades, festivals, and more around the region celebrating summer's biggest holiday. However, given the potential for severe weather on the way, be sure to check with your local municaplity for updates on delays or cancellations.

Here's what's in store this July 4 around Montgomery County:

Norristown

Norristown has parade startsing at 10 a.m., music and other fun starting at 3 p.m., and fireworks at 10 p.m.

The 45 minute parade route will travel from St. Francis Church to Dekalb and Main streets.

Lower Providence

The 27th All-American Fireworks Celebration will start at 7 p.m. on July 4 at Eagleville Park, located on 100 Parklane Drive.

Conshohocken

Conshohocken celebrates the big day on Monday, July 3, with fireworks scheduled to go off at Sutcliffe Park at 9:30 p.m.

Sutcliffe Park itself will be closed during the fireworks for safety reasons.

"The fireworks display will be larger so that fireworks may be visible from as many vantage points as possible throughout the Borough," organizers said. "Due to the larger size of fireworks, a wider safety perimeter surrounding the discharge zone is required."

Officials said they ran tests to ensure fireworks could be safely and clearly viewed from around the rest of the borough.

Ambler

Ambler's annual Kiwanis Carnival and Fireworks will run from July 4 through July 7, with fireworks held on Friday, July 7 at 9 p.m. at Wissahickon High School.

The five-night event will feature numerous community events, games, music, food, and more, all in support of local youth programs.

Wristbands for the five-night event are $30 and are available online here.

A raindate for fireworks is set for July 8.

Skippack

Skippack's 4th of July parade will be held on Independence Day at 11 a.m. from the middle of downtown. Afterwards, there will be a BBQ party at Parc Bistro, with food and drink vendors set up throughout the area.

Fireworks will be held at Palmer Park near Skippack Elementary School at about 10 p.m.

Glenside

The Greater Glenside Patriotic Association organizes some of the largest and longest running 4th of July celebrations in Montgomery County, with the parade ongoing since 1904.

At 10 a.m., a Children's Morning Program will be held at Renninger Memorial Park

At 4 p.m., the 1.5 mile parade will begin. A full route is available online here.

Fireworks are scheduled "after dark" at Abington Junio and Senior High Schools.

LANSDALE — The future of a historic building in Lansdale could become more clear this month.

Borough officials heard an update about the imminent closure of the Wells Fargo bank on Main Street, vowing to do what they can to preserve it.

“I came here tonight to show my support for the preservation of the Wells Fargo building,” said resident Denise Peyton.

In May the Wells Fargo branch at the corner of Main Street and Susquehanna Avenue announced in a letter sent to customers its plans to close on Aug. 16, after closing several other branches in the region in late 2022, according to reporting by North Penn Now at that time.

The borough’s staff then discussed the closure in talks on the pending conversion of Susquehanna to two-way traffic, and the Lansdale Historical Society has posted a series of “Back Then” columns on its Facebook page detailing the history of the building. In July, LHS President Pat Rieker detailed the history of the building for the council and urged members to take several steps to preserve that building and others of historic nature in the town.

The Lansdale National Bank first opened on the site on June 16, 1864, over eight years before the town was formally incorporated in 1872 when the population of what would become Lansdale was less than 500 residents. A one-story building on the site would become the town’s first post office in the 1870s, as a new two-story building was built next door in 1875, according to LHS research.

As the town grew, the two sites were combined into one expanded building in 1911, and hosted classes for the Lansdale School of Business on the second floor from 1918-1928; the bank moved temporarily across the street during an interior renovation in 1929 into the 1930s as the current façade was added.

Those renovations were completed by the time of the bank’s 75th anniversary in March 1939, when roughly 10,000 visitors toured the new bank in just seven hours, which was believed at the time to be the second-largest crowd ever seen in Lansdale, behind only the town’s 50th-anniversary celebrations in 1922, according to LHS research.

Peyton referenced the pending closure during her public comments to the council on Aug. 2, saying she “volunteered at a historic site for over 20 years, so I understand the importance of the preservation of old buildings.”

“And I think that they help to add character to the community, and I’d hate for us to have a cookie-cutter community,” she said.

She then referenced another local landmark now gone: the 1890s-era Tremont Hotel that stood at Main and Broad Streets until the late 1990s, when it was demolished to make way for a big-box pharmacy.

“I’ve lived here my whole life, in this area, and I know we saw what happened when they took down the Tremont, and they replaced it with what they replaced it with,” Peyton said.

“So I’m hoping they can maybe come up with solutions to help keep it here,” she said.

Council Vice President Mary Fuller replied, saying she thought all of the council agreed.

“Saving that building is very important to, I think, all of us, and we will do everything we possibly can,” Fuller said.

“Understanding that a private company owns it, and they have the right to sell it, but we’ll do everything in our power to make sure that building stays erect,” she said.

Code committee Chairman Rich DiGregorio added in his report to the council that staff and that committee also started talks during their August 2 meeting on ways to preserve historically or architecturally significant structures, with no firm recommendations for the council yet.

“Staff is looking into trying to establish some protections for historical buildings, and it’s a work in progress. We were just talking about it tonight, and we’re going to keep it on our agenda and try to get some more information and resolutions to look at,” said DiGregorio.

During the July presentation, Rieker called on the council to take several actions that could ensure the preservation, including changing the demolition permits issued by the borough, creating a historic district in the borough where any changes would be vetted by a dedicated board, and contacting real estate agents handling such sales to voice the borough’s concerns.

Code Director Jason Van Dame said Wednesday that staff have not received any plans or indications for future use of the building, and are operating under the assumption it will be listed for sale on or around August 16, while the committee will keep discussing the preservation tactics recommended by the historical society and how such a zoning district could be created along the lines of what’s spelled out in the town’s most recent comprehensive plan.

That comprehensive plan, adopted by the council in 2020 after roughly five years of public discussion, suggests council adopts an ordinance to facilitate the preservation or reuse of older institutional buildings, nominate properties to the National Register, and form a municipal historical commission; the bank building is included in a list of 46 historic properties highlighted in the “historic resources” chapter of that plan.

Other commendations from the comprehensive plan include formalizing an inventory of structures considered to be historically significant, creating a waiting period before a demolition permit for such a building could be issued, creating use and dimensional incentives to preserve such buildings, adding signs to indicate historic properties throughout town, and/or creating an adaptive reuse overlay to allow newer uses in old buildings.

“We are evaluating a couple of different options,” Van Dame said.

Lansdale’s borough council next meets at 7 p.m. on Aug. 16 with various council committees next meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 6, all at the borough municipal building, 1 Vine Street. For more information visit www.Lansdale.org.

Drivers, be warned: you’ll have to detour around one of Lansdale’s busiest intersections soon.

Borough officials announced Wednesday the pending closure of Broad Street by SEPTA for work on a rail crossing next weekend.

"I want to make council aware, and the public aware, of work that will be happening here at the SEPTA rail crossing on South Broad Street,” said borough Manager John Ernst.

"That is beginning on Friday, November 10th at 9 a.m., and continuing through Monday the 13th until 6 p.m. The road will be closed completely,” he said.

Borough officials first announced the closure on social media on Oct. 27, and added details in a subsequent post on Thursday morning, including a detour map showing how Broad would be open to local traffic only from Hancock Street to Vine, closed at the rail crossing north of Vine to Jenkins Avenue, then open to local traffic only between Jenkins and Main Streets.

The detour route would send traffic east-west on Hancock and Main Streets and north-south on Church Road, the manager said, while SEPTA replaces the tracks and concrete thresholds leading up to the tracks. The rail agency has indicated trains will run on a single track only through the crossing during that work.

"If they can open the road earlier on Monday, they will,” he said.

Councilman BJ Breish asked if the borough or SEPTA planned to post signs in the area warning of the closure, and Ernst said they already had. Orange signs reading "This road to be closed for construction 11/10/2023” could be seen at the intersection Wednesday night.

Code director Jason Van Dame added during the code committee meeting that Vine Street will remain open during the construction, so drivers can use the Wood-Vine connector route that was upgraded in 2013-14 as a bypass around the intersection, and that SEPTA will provide bus service between the Pennbrook and Lansdale stations. In a SEPTA service advisory, the rail agency said that buses will be offered for "the entire service day,” and said riders "at Gwynedd Valley, North Wales and Pennbrook (stations) will board and exit from the Inbound Platform during the weekend busing,” and should add 15 to 25 minutes to their expected travel time.

Resident Carole Farrell asked if the closure would conflict with the town’s annual Mardi Gras parade, and Van Dame said it would not, since that event is scheduled for the following weekend.

"The originally wanted to do this project on, I think the first (date) was Bike Night, the next one was the Cruise Night. So they’ve worked with us to get a weekend that did not impact one of the famous borough events. It’s hard to shut down Main Street, and Broad Street, at the same time,” he said.
