Nearly $465,000 has been awarded to install two electric vehicle charging stations off Interstate 95 and Interstate 476 in Delaware County.

DELAWARE COUNTY, PA — State and federal officials announced funding to support expanding the electric vehicle charging network in Delaware County recently.

Pennsylvania Department of Transportation Secretary Mike Carroll, U.S. Senator Bob Casey, Federal Highway Administration Deputy Administrator Andrew Rogers, and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers announced the first round of conditional awards for federal National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) funding.

Two awards were issued in Delaware County.

Tesla Inc. is getting $253,826 and $211,165 for electric vehicle charging stations in Delaware County.

One will be located at the Royal Farms in Aston at Exit 2 on Interstate 95 and the other at the Wawa in Woodlyn at Exit 1 on Interstate 476.

These awards further the Shapiro Administration’s work to address climate change, grow the Commonwealth’s economy and ensure that the future of Pennsylvania transportation is on track to be cleaner, safer, more affordable, and more reliable than ever before.

The $33.8 million federal investment is part of the $171.5 million PennDOT will receive and distribute for electric vehicle charging infrastructure over five years through the federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

"Our team worked diligently to meet federal NEVI requirements while also spreading opportunities among various companies and communities," Carroll said. "Because of Governor Shapiro’s leadership and record of delivering for Pennsylvanians, we are among the first states distributing these funds that will provide travelers with options and confidence while also benefitting our environment. These new investments will create good paying jobs and allow Pennsylvanian residents, businesses, and visitors to travel across the Commonwealth faster, cleaner, and more reliably."

The conditional awards include various recipients – including seven headquartered in Pennsylvania – and site locations across the state.

Four federally compliant charging ports will be funded at each charging location, with 216 total funded charging ports.

Twenty-two of the projects are in or within half a mile of state or federally designated disadvantaged communities.

"Thanks to the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, we can strengthen and expand our electric vehicle charging infrastructure," Casey said. "This funding will allow us to deploy electric vehicle charging stations across our Commonwealth, from cities to suburbs to rural areas, promoting energy security, creating jobs, and reducing our carbon footprint."

Moving forward, a National Environmental Policy Act public involvement process will begin for each project.

Projects can begin after those processes are successfully completed and agreements with each recipient are executed. Some projects may begin as early as late 2023.

"In Pennsylvania and across the country, President Biden’s Investing in America agenda is building the backbone of our national network of EV charging stations that will ensure a seamless experience for drivers when they’re charging up – similar payment systems, clear pricing information, interoperable connector types, and reliable charging speeds as we make the historic transition to electric vehicles," Rogers said. "With federal investments made possible by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, Pennsylvania is taking a critical step forward as States across our nation begin deploying EV chargers for the communities they serve, and we are proud partner with them in this shared project."

The NEVI funding supports the Commonwealth and federal goal of expanding EV charging along the previously designated Alternative Fuel Corridors (AFCs) and Interstate lookalikes.

Pennsylvania has over 1,800 miles of AFCs.

Per the guidance from U.S. DOT, NEVI formula funds must first be used to "build out" designated AFCs (meaning there must be no more than 50 miles between stations and less than 1 mile from an AFC exit) and meet U.S. DOT minimum standards and requirements.

The PA NEVI program includes multiple rounds of funding.

During Round 1 selection, the focus was on building out the AFC network along the interstates to meet the NEVI requirements.

Once AFCs are fully built out, PennDOT will shift to expanding the NEVI Formula Program funding to fund right-sized EV chargers for Pennsylvania’s community charging.

Projects were evaluated on a competitive basis following federal requirements and other factors:

The NEVI funds support the planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of charging sites.

The PA NEVI program is a reimbursement program and applicants are required to provide a minimum 20 percent match.

PennDOT received 271 unique funding submissions requesting $165.4 million for this round of investments.

• Harry’s Hands To Help and Heal will hold its third annual Easter egg hunt, 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 2 at Merry Park Place, Glendale Road, Havertown. Children 12 and under are invited to enjoy free food, drinks, prizes and fun.

Kids can meet and take a free photo with Harry the bunny, as well as enjoy free face painting and an egg and candy hunt, which will begin at 3:30 p.m., and be separated by different age categories.

• Manoa Community Church, 153 N. Eagle Rd., Havertown, will present an Egg Hunt, 10 a.m. Saturday, April 1. Kids can find thousands of eggs and celebrate the Easter holiday at this free event. The event begins indoors, followed by outdoor egg hunts, face painting, balloon sculpting and more until 12 noon. Families with kids up to grade 5 are welcome to select the egg hunts that work best for the family. Egg hunts for younger children require one adult. The egg hunt for kids in grades 3-5 will play a large group game until the kids are picked up. The rain date is slated for Sunday, April 2 at 12 noon. Walk-ins are welcome. MARPLE TOWNSHIP

Marple Township will hold Easter Eggstravaganza, noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 1 at Veterans Memorial Park on Lawrence Road in Broomall. The event will feature all-day free visits with the Easter bunny, as well as food vendors, shopping, face painting, kids’ activities and crafts.

Media will hold its annual Easter egg hunt at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 8 at the tot lot area. The hunt will be followed by refreshments in the Community Center.

MIDDLETOWN TOWNSHIP

Hop over to Bunnyland at Linvilla Orchards for a hayride to the Easter bunny’s house.

Be sure to bring a camera to take lots of pictures of the bunny as he greets each hay wagon. Visitors will enjoy a story and a special treat. Timed tickets for the Easter bunny hayride will be available.

NEWTOWN SQUARE

Celebrate the spring season on Saturday, April 8 with an Easter Egg Hunt and spring activities at Colonial Pennsylvania Plantation, 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.. Children 2 to 12 are invited to search the fields and collect eggs filled with surprises.

Afterwards, visit the farm for activities and demonstrations, including a clay table and pottery demonstration by Bob Deane of the Potters’ Guild of Wallingford and shows from Levram the Great, The Colonial Conjurer. Families can also meet the animals, enjoy music, colonial toys and games, dye eggs and more.

Adults, Seniors, and Children over the age of 2 are $10. Member tickets are $8. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged, but tickets will also be available at the door. Children may participate in either the morning or afternoon hunt. Each child can bring one egg carton to fill with eggs. Levram the Great presentations at 11:30 a.m., and 12:30 and 2:30 p.m.

The farm is open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the last admission at 3 p.m.. Check in begins at 10:30 a.m..

• John Wesley Cross American Legion Post 507, 20 W. Cleveland Ave., Norwood, will hold its annual Breakfast with the Easter Bunny, with homemade food and fun, at the post’s upper hall on Sunday, April 2 from 9 to 11 a.m. Children age 6 and under eat free, 7-12 years are $5, and everyone 13 and older are $7. • John Wesley Cross American Legion Post 507 will host its annual Easter egg hunt on Saturday, April 1 at Norwood’s Lower Park. People are advised to be there early, with baskets, as the hunt will begin at 11 a.m. sharp. The event is for toddlers through age 12. JWC is a nonprofit that is dedicated to serving veterans, their families and the community.

• St. Gabriel Parish, 233 Mohawk Ave., Norwood, will hold Lunch with The Easter Bunny and its Easter egg hunt on Sunday, April 2. The lunch will be held 1:15 to 1:45 p.m. in the parish hall and the egg hunt will take place at 2:15 p.m. Cost is $5 for children and $7 for adults.

HAVERTOWN, Pa. (WPVI) -- In the kitchen at Ox's Way, a vegan restaurant in Havertown, George Walker is scratch-baking all kinds of vegan desserts.

His son, Kianu, is there to assist and the one who got him started

Kianu, a former rap artist, had decided to launch his own vegan ice cream line, named Vannah Banana, after his younger sister, Savannah.

One day, his dad joined him on a delivery to Nourish, a vegan cafe that offers a selection of baked goods.

George tried the baked goods being sold there and didn't like them. So he asked the shop owner if he could try to do a better job.

George had never tried baking but after some trial and error, he refined his recipe and figured out the best substitutions.

He now makes everything from cupcakes (the pink champagne are the top seller) to cookies (the mango sugar cookies are the most popular) and a sweet potato brownie that put him on the vegan baking map.

Now his desserts, delivered to a half dozen cafes around the region, sell out daily, and Kianu has put his ice cream production on hold to build his dad's baked goods line.

George's dreams are modest; he simply wants to pay the bills. But Kianu hopes to one day have a brick and mortar that carries his ice cream seasonally and his dad's baked goods year-round.

This Week’s Venue Spotlight is on Warehouse 24 in Woodlyn. In my opinion there are a few standard things that make a random building a good venue for enjoying music, I call it the “LASR” (pronounced Laser) Method. Location, Location, Location: Warehouse 24 is located in an area that most people don’t love, to be honest. It is very close to Chester, which has had a staggering amount of violence. That being said, I’ve never had a problem. The bar has ample parking. It is also within walking distance to Widener University, so every night of the week it is packed with college kids.

Ambiance: The Ambiance at Warehouse 24 is interesting because they have different sections, and each one has a different feel. They have the deck outside, which is a place to smoke and talk. There is the pool room which is loud and lounge-like. There is the main center room which is a giant dance club. Last, but not least, there is a back room that features live amateur local bands.

Sound Quality: Warehouse 24 has a state of the art entertainment system. The sound is loud enough to blow your ears out and the quality is great. Every time I’ve been there I have been able to hear everything very clearly. I think it is the best bar in Delco to catch a cover band. The Boys from Modern Bliss and Split Decision are both frequently there!

Refreshment: Warehouse 24 is a bar. That is all. There is a pizza place next door that stays open until at least 2 a.m. Warehouse 24 has fair prices and often run good specials but there is always a cover.

My verdict: Overall, I love Warehouse 24! I think they did a great job rehabbing the place, it is MUCH better than the old bar that inhabited that building. The sound system is perfect for the room, and big-name local acts love to play there. If you’re over 21 and you haven’t been yet, do yourself a favor and head down there soon. I’m a regular there, so as always, if you see me, say "hello!"
