Ashland Town Manager Michael Herbert is stepping down.
In a press release from the town issued shortly before 9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5, the town announced that “Michael Herbert and the Ashland Select Board have jointly agreed that the time is right to begin the transition to new leadership.”
The Select Board met on Wednesday and was scheduled to vote on the employment agreement with Herbert. But instead, Select Board Chair Brandi Kinsman announced that Herbert was leaving.
“The decision reflects both the natural completion of a significant chapter of work initiated during Mr. Herbert's tenure and Mr. Herbert's decision to focus on his health and other personal and professional interests," the release states. "Mr. Herbert's service as Town Manager concludes effective September 1, 2026,” according to the release.
Herbert has been with Ashland for 13 years, the last 10 and a half as manager.

"That reality, combined with health considerations and my desire to focus on family and other professional interests, made clear to me that this is the right time for the Town to begin its next chapter under new leadership. I am grateful to the Board, the staff, and the community for the opportunity to serve, and I leave with deep confidence in the Select Board, the team and the institutions we have built together."
Kinsman, in the release, called Herbert an “integral part of the Ashland community,” saying he has contributed to shaping the town.
“The Board respects and supports his decision,” Kinsman said. “We are genuinely grateful for his years of service, and we wish him well in his next chapter.”
Ashland's Michael Herbert is named among 250 U.S. government championsThe release specified several of the town’s accomplishments during Herbert’s time as town manager — including construction of a new public safety building; a new elementary school; the Pond Street renovation; restoration of Mill Park; and a “comprehensive transformation of downtown Ashland,” through a $1 million streetscape project.
Kinsman said during Wednesday's meeting that the board will later appoint an acting or interim town manager. The release states that the board will begin a search for a new permanent town manager in coming months. Assistant Town Managers Katherine Bird and Beth Reynolds have been filling in for Herbert since he went on leave sometime earlier this summer.
In the release, Herbert said he planned to remain part of the Ashland community.
"A transformation like the one Ashland has experienced over the last decade only happens when many people work together for the common good," Herbert said. "The staff, the boards and commissions, the volunteers, the elected officials past and present, and the residents who showed up for their community made this work possible. I am grateful to have been part of it, and I look forward to remaining part of the Ashland community in the years ahead."

Ashland Town Manager Michael Herbert will receive a full year’s salary as part of his agreement to step down, according to his separation agreement with the town.
The Ashland Select Board and Herbert announced on Aug. 5 that the two sides agreed that Herbert would be leaving his job, effective Sept. 1. He was on leave at the time and will remain on leave through Sept. 1.
According to the separation agreement, obtained by the Daily News through a public records request, Herbert is using accrued personal and sick time through Sept. 1. After his final day, he will receive $243,600 — an amount equivalent to one year's salary.
The separation agreement called Herbert leaving the town a “mutually agreed” decision and said, “Mr. Herbert’s health has necessitated that he commence and remain on sick leave,” until his final day on Sept. 1.
He will not do any town manager duties but will make himself “reasonably available” for consultations and provide a detailed “transition memorandum.”
As part of the agreement, the board agrees to give a professional reference and not to give interviews or make public statements other than which was released on Aug. 5. Both Herbert and the town agree to not “publicly disparage, denigrate or provide negative comments” about one another, including current or former town employees and officials.
“The parties agree that this ‘mutual non-disparagement’ clause is an important part of this agreement and is a material condition to induce both parties to execute the same,” according to the agreement.

Herbert has been with Ashland for 13 years, the last 10 and a half as town manager. He has been on leave for an unspecified reason since mid-July.
According to his last Select Board evaluation, on Aug. 6, 2025, he received an overall 4.4. score on a scale of 1 to 5, meaning he met and exceeded expectations.
His contract was scheduled to run through Dec. 31.
