Home Care Sherborn, MA

They say that your golden years are the best years of your life. For most older Americans, that's how it should be - a time to relax, reflect, and live life in a familiar place. After all, senior citizens in the U.S. have worked tirelessly to build a better economy, serve their communities, and raise families.

However, as seniors grow older, completing daily tasks like showering and enjoying activities such as visiting the historic Sherborn Center Historic District gets harder without someone by their side. Unfortunately, many older Americans aren't able to rely on their adult children for help. The reality in today's world is that family members do not have the skills or time to dedicate to caring for their parents. That's where Always Best Care Senior Services comes in.

Our in-home care services are for people who prefer to stay at home as they grow older but need ongoing care that family or friends cannot provide. More and more older adults prefer to live far away from long-term, institutionalized facilities and closer to the place where they feel most comfortable - their home. TAKING CARE OF MY DADS EVERY NEED NIGHT AND DAY WAS EXHAUSTING TO SAY THE LEAST. RON WAS QUICK IN GETTING BACK TO ME. WHEN I COULD NOT GET ANYWHERE WITH THE VA, RON SOMEHOW MANAGED TO GET THINGS DONE. SO KIND ATTENTIVE AND PATIENT. DEFINATELY WENT THE EXTRA MILE TO SUPPLY MY DAD WITH THE GREATEST CAREGIVER WHEN HE NEEDED IT MOST. A SPECIAL THANKS TO (KK) KWAME FOR MY DADS OVERNIGHT CARE. YOU WERE A LIFESAVER TO ME. MY DAD WAS A MAN'S MAN AND DID NOT ACCEPT HELP EASILY, BUT MY DAD TRUSTED YOU TO BE HIS GO TO WHEN NIGHTS WERE SO DIFFICULT. THANK YOU KINGSLEY AND PION FOR YOUR PROFFESIONALISM, GUIDANCE AND COMPASSION. YOU PROVIDED FOR ME AND MY DAD DURING THIS DIFFICULT TIME. A SIMPLE THANK YOU WILL NEVER COVER IT!”

“I am a past client of this provider We worked with Always Best Care to provide 24-hour care for our parents who needed additional help to stay in their home. The care workers were helpful, caring, and provided the support and peace of mind needed. In addition to the care workers, office staff were regularly reachable and patient with multiple questions! Although it was a short term placement, about 3 months, I'd recommend and would use them again if the need arises.”

“I can’t say enough great things about Always Best Care Senior Services! We used them to help move my aunt from Boston to Phoenix, and I literally couldn’t have done it without them. From my first interaction with Ron to set things up to Kingsley helping (that word doesn’t begin to describe his patience and calmness) to the most amazing caregiver I’ve ever encountered, Sarah, they handled her every need while also ensuring me it would all be okay. Another passenger on the plane even commented how amazing Sarah was with my aunt! They were truly Heaven sent, and I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone for any health care they provide!”

TESTIMONIALS

“My mom is 93 and had COVID-19, requiring hospitalization for shortness of breath and treatment with oxygen. I would have cared for my mom, but I got sick. I contacted ABCSS twelve hours before I started caring for my mom. My mom had some brain fog and some fluid balance issues. They responded that they could provide my mom with 11 hours of care a day, starting the day I was to be there. The next morning, an aide came with a supervisor to see my Mom. My goals for that day were small: to coax my mother to see the hairdresser, wash her hair, and ensure she took her medications. The aide was able to do that, to give my mom medication that was set out, to encourage her to drink and to walk in the halls. The following day, the aide encouraged her to shower and get dressed. My mom left her apartment to go to the dining room and eat with her friends. My mom might have required another hospitalization without the aide coaxing her to eat and drink reliably. Having an aide helped my mom regain some of her independence despite her brain fog and helped reinstitute the daily schedule that my mom had before her hospitalization. I had initially been contracted for 8 days, but with my mother's progress, I could terminate one-to-one care in just 6 days! I helped by setting daily goals, but the aide coaxed my mother toward health. I highly recommend this agency. I thank Georgianna for her care of my mother.”

“I am a current client of this provider Always Best Care of Greater Worcester is wonderful. The person who answers the telephone (her name is Donna), and she's older like we are. She has a clue about what we're talking about when we're asking for help and why, so it becomes a very personal conversation. I was introduced to the director. He is an RN, plus a few other things. When he comes in to do the assessment for what you need, he works really hard at putting together the right caregiver with the person asking. He was just absolutely lovely. We needed somebody who could drive to do errands, and then I needed help with the laundry and occasional meals. The caregiver picks up and tidies around. She does bathing for my husband, who is almost bedbound. She does other simple health-related things for him. For me, she helps with my bathing because I have a bad back and bad knees. She's nice, and she's sweet. She can be a little tough when she needs to be, which is what we wanted. Not to be abusive, but just someone with a firm hand. When you don't feel well, you tend to act like a 7-year-old; it doesn't matter how old you are. She is just lovely. We couldn't ask for anything better.”

What is Non-Medical Senior Care in Sherborn, MA?

lm-check

Home is where the heart is. While that saying can sound a tad cliche, it is especially true for many seniors living in America. When given a choice, older adults most often prefer to grow older at home. An AARP study found that three out of four adults over the age of 50 want to stay in their homes and communities as they age.

lm-check

When you begin to think about why, it makes sense. Home offers a sense of security, comfort, and familiarity.

lm-check

The truth is, as we age, we begin to rely on others for help. When a family is too busy or lives too far away to fulfill this role, in-home senior care is often the best solution. Home care services allow seniors to enjoy personal independence while also receiving trustworthy assistance from a trained caregiver.

lm-check

At Always Best Care, we offer a comprehensive range of home care services to help seniors stay healthy while they get the help they need to remain independent. As your senior loved one gets older, giving them the gift of senior care is one of the best ways to show your love, even if you live far away.

Respite Care

Respite Care Services

According to AARP, more than 53 million adults living in the U.S. provide care to someone over 50 years old. Unfortunately, these caregivers experience stress, exhaustion, and even depression. Our respite care services help family caregivers address urgent obligations, spend time with their children, and enjoy nearby activities. Perhaps more importantly, respite care gives family members time to recharge and regroup. Taking personal time to de-stress reduces the risk of caregiver burnout. So, if you've always wanted to eat at the local Heritage of Sherborn or visit Edward's Plain-Dowse's Corner Historic District, don't feel bad. Doing so is great for both you and your loved one.

At the end of the day, our goal is to become a valuable part of your senior's daily routine. That way, we may help give them the highest quality of life possible. We know that staying at home is important for your loved one, and we are here to help make sure that is possible.

If you have been on the fence about non-medical home care, there has never been a better time than now to give your senior the care, assistance, and companionship they deserve.

Aging in Place: The Preferred Choice for Most Seniors

While it's true that some seniors have complicated medical needs that prevent them from staying at home, aging in place is often the best arrangement for seniors and their families. With a trusted caregiver, seniors have the opportunity to live with a sense of dignity and do so as they see fit - something that is unavailable to many older people today.

In-home care makes it possible for millions of seniors to age in place every year. Rather than moving to a strange nursing home, seniors have the chance to stay at home where they feel the happiest and most comfortable.

Here are just a few of the reasons why older men and women prefer to age at home:

How much does a senior's home truly mean to them?

A study published by the American Society on Aging found that more than half of seniors say their home's emotional value means more than how much their home is worth in monetary value. It stands to reason, then, that a senior's home is where they want to grow old.

With the help of elderly care in Sherborn, MA, seniors don't have to age in a sterilized care facility. Instead, they can age gracefully in the place they want to be most: their home. In contrast, seniors who move to a long-term care facility must adapt to new environments, new people, and new systems that the facility implements. At this stage in life, this kind of drastic change can be more harmful than helpful.

Institutional care facilities like nursing homes often put large groups of people together to live in one location. On any given day, dozens of staff members and caregivers run in and out of these facilities. Being around so many new people in a relatively small living environment can be dangerous for a seniors' health and wellbeing. When you consider that thousands of seniors passed away in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, opting for in-home care is often a safer, healthier choice for seniors.

Aging in place has been shown to improve seniors' quality of life, which helps boost physical health and also helps insulate them from viral and bacterial risks found in elderly living facilities.

For many seniors, the ability to live independently with assistance from a caregiver is a priceless option. With in-home care, seniors experience a higher level of independence and freedom - much more so than in other settings like a nursing home. When a senior has the chance to age in place, they get to live life on their own terms, inside the house that they helped make into a home. More independence means more control over their personal lives, too, which leads to increased levels of fulfillment, happiness, and personal gratification. Over time, these positive feelings can manifest into a healthier, longer life.

More independence, a healthier life, and increased comfort are only a few benefits of aging in place. You have to take into consideration the role of cost and convenience. Simply put, it's usually easier and more affordable to help seniors age in place than it is to move them into an institutional care facility. According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, seniors who age in the comfort of their homes can save thousands of dollars per month.

In-home care services from Always Best Care, for instance, are often less expensive than long-term solutions, which can cost upwards of six figures per year. To make matters worse, many residential care facilities are reluctant to accept long-term care insurance and other types of payment assistance.

With Always Best Care's home care services, seniors and their families have a greater level of control over their care plans. In-home care gives seniors the chance to form a bond with a trusted caregiver and also receive unmatched care that is catered to their needs. In long-term care facilities, seniors and their loved ones have much less control over their care plan and have less of a say in who provides their care.

 Elderly Care Sherborn, MA

Affordable Care

In-home care is a valuable resource that empowers seniors to age in place on their own terms. However, a big concern for many families and their loved ones is how much in-home care costs. If you're worried that in-home care is too expensive, you may be pleasantly surprised to learn that it is one of the most affordable senior care arrangements available.

Typically, hiring an Always Best Care in-home caregiver for a few hours a week is more affordable than sending your loved one to a long-term care facility. This is true even for seniors with more complex care needs.

At Always Best Care, we will work closely with you and your family to develop a Care Plan that not only meets your care needs, but your budget requirements, too. Once we discover the level of care that you or your senior need, we develop an in-home care plan that you can afford.

In addition to our flexible care options, families should also consider the following resources to help offset potential home care costs:

If your loved one qualifies, Medicaid may help reduce in-home care costs. Review your MA's Medicaid program laws and benefits, and make sure your senior's financial and medical needs meet Medicaid eligibility requirements.
Attendance and aid benefits through military service can cover a portion of the costs associated with in-home care for veterans and their spouses.
Many senior care services like in-home care are included in long-term care insurance options. Research different long-term care solutions to find a plan that provides coverage for senior care.
Home care can be included as part of a senior's private insurance plan. Read over your loved one's insurance policy carefully or speak with their insurance provider to determine if in-home care is covered.
Depending on the life insurance plan, you may be able to apply your policy toward long-term care. You may be able to use long-term-care coverage to help pay for in-home elderly care.
 Senior Care Sherborn, MA

Compassionate Care. Trusted Caregivers.

When you or your senior loved one needs assistance managing daily tasks at home, finding a qualified caregiver can be challenging. It takes a special kind of person to provide reliable care for your senior loved one. However, a caregiver's role involves more than meal preparation and medication reminders. Many seniors rely on their caregivers for companionship, too.

Our companion care services give seniors the chance to socialize in a safe environment and engage in activities at home. These important efforts boost morale and provide much-needed relief from repetitive daily routines. A one-on-one, engaging conversation can sharpen seniors' minds and give them something in which to be excited.

At Always Best Care, we only hire care providers that we would trust to care for our own loved ones. Our senior caregivers in Sherborn, MA understand how important it is to listen and communicate with their seniors. A seemingly small interaction, like a short hug goodbye, can make a major difference in a senior's day. Instead of battling against feelings of isolation, seniors begin to look forward to seeing their caregiver each week.

Understanding the nuances of senior care is just one of the reasons why our care providers are so great at their job.

Unlike some senior care companies, our caregivers must undergo extensive training before they work for Always Best Care. In addition, our caregivers receive ongoing training throughout the year. This training ensures that their standard of care matches up to the high standards we've come to expect. During this training, they will brush up on their communication skills, safety awareness, and symptom spotting. That way, your loved one receives the highest level of non-medical home care from day one.

Assisted Living Referral Services

While it's true that many seniors prefer to age at home, sometimes in-home care isn't the best fit. For those seniors and their families, choosing an assisted living facility makes more sense. Unfortunately, finding the optimal care facility is easier said than done in today's day and age. That's when Always Best Care's assisted living referral services begin to make a lot of sense.

Assisted living is a form of housing intended for seniors who require varying degrees of medical and personal attention. Accommodations may include single rooms, apartments, or shared living arrangements. Assisted living communities are typically designed to resemble a home-like environment and are physically constructed to encourage the independence of residents.

Respite Care Sherborn, MA

At assisted living communities, seniors receive help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and eating. They may also benefit from coordination of services with outside healthcare providers, and monitoring of resident activities to ensure their health, safety, and well-being. Caregivers who work at assisted living communities can also provide medication administration and personal care services for older adults.

Other services offered within assisted living communities can include some or all of the following:

  • Housekeeping
  • Laundry
  • Recreational Activities
  • Social Outings
  • Emergency Medical Response
  • Medication Monitoring
  • Family Visitation
  • Personal Care
 Caregivers Sherborn, MA

At Always Best Care, our representatives can match your senior's emotional, physical, and financial needs with viable assisted living communities nearby. Results are based on comparative data, so you can select the best choice for you or your loved one.

Always Best Care works closely with local senior living communities to gain valuable knowledge that we then use to help seniors and their loved ones make informed decisions. This information can include basic care and rent, resident availability, and services provided. Because Always Best Care is compensated by these communities, we provide senior living referral services at no extra cost to you.

Some of the most popular assisted living communities to consider in our area include the following:

  • The Residence at Valley Farm
  • Sherborn Council of Aging
  • Whitney Place Assisted Living and Memory Care
  • Woodhaven Elder Housing
  • Brookdale Cushing Park
  • Anthology of Millis
Home Care Sherborn, MA

For many seniors, moving into a senior living community revolves around how and when they want to make a transition to more involved care. Some seniors are more proactive about transitioning to independent living. Others choose to remain home until their care needs or other requirements are satisfied. Remember - our staff is here to help. Contact our office today to learn more about assisted living communities and how we can find a facility that exceeds your expectations.

By Julia Beauregard Hometown Weekly Staff

The Sherborn Council on Aging and friends recently gathered together at Pilgrim Church on Wednesday, October 26, to commemorate longtime Sherborn resident Phyllis Braun as she was presented the Boston Post Cane Award.

The Post Cane Award was established in 1909 by the Boston Post newspaper, which sent over 700 canes to Massachusetts select boards to be bestowed to the oldest resident in town.

On the day, Phyllis was surrounded by her son, Robert, friends, and the Sherborn Council on Aging. The tables within the church function room were adorned with elegant hand-made table cloths, topped with quaint tea sets. Attendees of the ceremony celebrated with tea and pastries.

Sue Kelliher, the director of the COA, welcomed guests to the event as they arrived. Once everyone was settled in, Kelliher gave a wonderful speech both explaining what the award was, and honoring Phyllis’ dedication to the Sherborn community throughout her years as a resident.

She then turned the microphone over to Select Board Members Paul Derensis and Marian Nuetra to make the presentation of the pin and certificate — the actual cane itself remains in custody of the town — to Phyllis Braun.

For her part, Braun is thrilled to be the oldest resident in town; she is the embodiment of aging with grace. Phyllis shared with us that she has “had a wonderful life in Sherborn,” and despite all of the changes she has seen, “Sherborn is still a nice, small farm town.”

Phyllis Braun has been a Sherborn resident for over seventy-one years. She moved to Sherborn with her husband, Robert, in 1951 after purchasing a farm that had been established in the 1700s.

While her husband tended to the livestock, Phyllis planted herbs, which she grew, sold, and used as a means for decoration. She designed wedding bouquets and wreaths. Phyllis became the local expert in herbal horticulture and spread her knowledge of growing and using herbs to locals — this despite the fact that she had no formal training in horticulture; she was entirely self-taught.

It was the goal of her family to maintain the farm as it was in the 1700s, growing herbs and crops without the use of pesticides. The Brauns had a very successful local, organic farm.

Phyllis Braun is a dedicated and well-respected member of the Sherborn community. She is the co-founder of the Sherborn Garden Club and the Sherborn Council on Aging, and she has been involved in both the Sherborn Historical Society and Sherborn Benevolent Society.

After asking Phyllis for a piece of advice for those younger than her (which, in Sherborn, means all of us), she stated succinctly: “Keep our minds open to accept changes, because life is going to change, whether you like it or not.”

The Trustees of Reservations is trying to keep Millborn Farm in the family — well, kind of. And it’s asking for the public’s help.

The property, more than 180 acres across the towns of Sherborn and Millis, is owned by Isabel and Claire Constable. They are granddaughters of Charles Eliot, who founded the Trustees in 1891. A local farmer maintains hay fields on the land, and equestrians and hunters have access, too.

The group is aiming to raise $14.4 million, including $10.2 million to buy the farm and protect it from development. (Yes, that means no housing, but the thorny question of land preservation’s role in the housing shortage is a topic for another time.) The rest is needed to cover long-term maintenance costs and improvements such as parking, trails, and signage. The nonprofit has already raised $9.6 million.

Besides the stonewall-lined hay fields, the farm has forestland and more than a mile of waterfront along the Charles River, Bogastow Brook, and South End Pond.

Millborn Farm could be connected through navigable water to other Trustees reservations: Cedariver in Millis, Shattuck Reservation in Medfield, Bridge Island Meadows, Rocky Narrows in Sherborn, Medfield Meadow Lots in Medfield, Peters Reservation in Dover, and Charles River Peninsula in Needham. Hiking trails from Shattuck Reservation connect to Noon Hill Reservation in Medfield and those from Peters Reservation connect to Chase Woodlands in Dover.

”Millborn Farm is a highly desirable property for many of its features, but also because it would provide us with the opportunity to help protect the Charles River and its watershed,” said Katie Theoharides, chief executive of the Trustees. “The Trustees has a long, rich history of land conservation in the Charles River Valley,” she said.

Indie Closeup: Born for Retail

A former supermarket buyer and category manager, Alex Weatherall has been immersed in convenience retailing since 2010—parlaying his experience at Wegmans Food Markets to apply the same winning strategy at his 3,300-sq.ft. Sherborn Market.

Located in Sherborn, Massachusetts, an affluent community southwest of Boston, the store owned by Weatherall and his wife/co-owner Laura has watched both fuel and inside sales increase significantly since their convenience indoctrination 13 years ago, all thanks to several key operational decisions.

“We let the products shine, to be in the spotlight. When you walk into the store all customers see is ‘product’.”

An unbranded fuel marketer, Weatherall jumped shipped from CITGO years ago, and has leveraged his unbranded fuel advantage of lower street prices, all while enjoying solid profits and ensuring high customer satisfaction.

“We have no gas stations within four to five miles,” he said. “People have told me we could probably set prices far higher based on the lack of local competition, but I don’t play that game. We make a profit but are very mindful of customer mindsets. They’re smart, and know when they’re being taken advantage of.”

One overarching key: Weatherall walks a fine line to make sure customers never feel “sticker shock” on any items or commodities sold—but value. “In 2014, I had annual gas throughput of 625,000 gallons, but that has increased to 900,000 gallons—we’re looking to exceed 1 million gallons sold by end of 2023,” said Weatherall.

Inside the store, Weatherall accumulated sales of $487,000 in 2011, but last year amassed $769,000, a 58% increase. The reason? “We let the products shine, be in the spotlight. When you walk into the store all customers see is ‘product’.”

Shedding additional light on a merchandising strategy he once implemented at New York-based Wegmans, Weatherall added, “We have very muted color scheme throughout the store, from floor to walls to decor. I learned that people’s eyes wander if you have a ‘splashy’ store with variant colors—and products might not be noticed. Many look up instead of ‘out.’ We’re able to fill the market basket when we let the products shine.”

Sherborn Market serves residents of Sherborn, a town of about 4,400 residents, and neighboring Dover, Medfield, Natick and Framingham. It makes available propane refill service, grocery essentials, beer, wine, dairy, lottery, pizza—and also features a Dunkin’ Donuts franchise. Weatherall currently offers no foodservice, but plans to launch a full-service deli in the near future. (Weatherall is in the process of remodeling an adjacent structure to the store to provide more space for Dunkin’.)

Years ago, Sherborn resident George Sturgis acquired what had once been known as Village Market, performed a major renovation and then sold out in 2004. When the new owners grew tired of operating a c-store, Weatherall pounced on the opportunity and bought the location in 2010.

During the early years, Laura Weatherall designed the store’s systems and processes and also ran the store when Alex Weatherall worked at a Boston healthcare company. He stepped away from that profession in 2016 to concentrate solely on convenience retailing.

While he knew little about convenience, his grocery retailing affinity came in handy during the retail channel conversion—parlaying those tenets to Sherborn Market. “I first interned at a Wegmans, was promoted to buyer and then category manager,” he said. “I was good at merchandising and understood tactical pricing. One thing I never do is activate elaborate promotional campaigns. A lot of everyday-low and consistent pricing is what we emphasize.”

One tenet of Weatherall is to, for example, lock in a 25% margin on beer instead of 30% to 35%, which keeps his ledger in good shape without giving customers sticker shock. “Most are smart and know that I am a ‘convenience retailer.’ They grasp the concept and know they’ll have to pay a little more for a package of Oreos.”

Other aspects of Sherborn Market include:

Summing up his 13-year c-store journey, Weatherall said, “I like working in retail because every day you get graded on your performance—you see results every day. If that excites you, then that makes retail fun. And if you make substantive improvements, they’ll keep coming back.”

DOVER — Dover-Sherborn Regional School District's next superintendent will be a familiar face to staff and students.

Elizabeth McCoy, currently the district's assistant superintendent for teaching and learning, has been selected for the top job after a successful Thursday vote during a joint meeting between the Dover, Sherborn and Dover-Sherborn Regional school committees.

McCoy takes over as superintendent on July 1.

Amanda Brown, a Sherborn School Committee member, called McCoy a visionary leader and said her presence would grant the district "a rare combination of continuity and progress toward change."

"Having a new superintendent that educators already know and trust because they've worked with her through a crisis is a huge asset for our community," said Brown. "Their good work can continue uninterrupted and Beth can hit the ground running. In fact, knowing Beth, she just won't stop running."

The vote was unanimous.

McCoy came to Dover-Sherborn in 2017 after 10 years as assistant headmaster at Boston Latin School. She is credited with leading an effort to create "an excellent hybrid learning plan for the 2020-21 school year that was a model for other districts," according to a statement from the school committees.

McCoy also helped create the district's Portrait of a Graduate and currently leads DS AIDE, which advances diversity, equity and inclusion in the schools. She is a graduate of Colgate University and holds a master's of education in school leadership from Harvard University.

According to her resume, she is also scheduled to earn a doctorate of education in leadership in schooling from UMass Lowell in 2025.

Other finalists for the job included Gerardo Martinez, principal of Schofield Elementary School in Wellesley. He was also recently a candidate for Framingham Public Schools' next assistant superintendent for equity, diversity and community engagement. That job went to Tiffany Lillie, the district's current director of community resource development.

Joseph Maruszczak was also vying for D-S superintendent. He was schools chief in Mendon-Upton from 2011 until July, when he left to launch Nuestro Mundo Charter School, a K-8 dual language immersion school in Providence, Rhode Island.

Mark Healey, a Dover School Committee member, called himself thrilled by the enthusiasm for McCoy but noted she had "tough competition" in the search, highlighting the "excellent, thought-provoking value Gerardo (Martinez) added to us."

"I would look forward to recognizing this vast amount of support you (McCoy) have from us and the community to think about how we can do things in very deep, meaningful and innovative ways," said Healey.

After serving as Dover-Sherborn superintendent since 2017, Andrew Keough retired last June 30. He is currently coaching the administrative team at Framingham's Harmony Grove Elementary School.

Kathleen Smith, former superintendent of Brockton schools, is serving as Dover-Sherborn's interim superintendent for the 2021-22 school year.

Dover-Sherborn has four schools in three districts. Chickering Elementary School is in Dover while Pine Hill Elementary is in Sherborn. Meanwhile, the middle and high schools are each classified in the regional school district.
