NEEDHAM, Mass.—Sept. 1, 2024–World-class jazz will come to Needham when internationally renowned performers John Pizzarelli and Catherine Russell take to the Powers Hall stage on Saturday, September 21, kicking off the 2024-2025 .
“We are thrilled to offer Greater Boston music lovers an opportunity to enjoy this one-of-a-kind performance by two American treasures,” said Michael Greis, co-president of the Great Hall Performance Foundation.
Dubbed “the essential duo,” Grammy Award winners Pizzarelli and Russell transport audiences to the glory days of jazz with masterful ease. Pizzarelli, a renowned guitarist, vocalist and bandleader, has been hailed by The Boston Globe for “reinvigorating the Great American Songbook” and he has expanded that repertoire to include Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Tom Waits, Antônio Carlos Jobim, and The Beatles. Experience his music at johnpizzarelli.com.
Described by NPR for her “voice that wails like a horn and whispers like a snake in the Garden of Eden”, vocalist Catherine Russell has performed on four continents. Her repertoire features a selection of gems from the 1920s through the present, bursting with soul and humor. Born into musical royalty, she is the daughter of the late Luis Russell, a legendary pianist/composer/bandleader, and Louis Armstrong’s long-time musical director, and Carline Ray, a pioneering vocalist/guitarist/bassist.
