CALIFORNIA — Eighteen cities in the Golden State are home to some of the country's most kind-hearted and helpful residents, according to a new survey of seasoned travelers.
LuvLink conducted a survey of 3,000 travelers to see where in the U.S. they have met the kindest people and compiled a list of the top 150 places. The survey explored how important local hospitality and genuine human connection is in choosing a travel destination.
"Travel isn't just about seeing new places - it's about the connections we make along the way. This survey shows that the kindness and hospitality of locals have a lasting impact on travelers, often shaping the overall experience and encouraging people to return. Those moments of genuine human connection can turn a good trip into an unforgettable one," said Nathanael van der Kolk of LuvLink.
In California, the following cities made the list:
Huntington Beach - 33

According to the survey, Huntington Beach's laid-back surf culture and carefree attitudes make visitors feel like they're part of the community from the moment they arrive.
"Known for their carefree attitudes and sunny dispositions, residents are always willing to give tips on the best surf spots, beachside restaurants, or upcoming festivals," the survey said.
Irvine - 38
Travelers commended Irvine for its blend of innovation and pristine suburban living. People who traveled to Irvine said the community leaves visitors with a sense of harmony and modern comfort.
"Known for their helpful, community-focused attitudes, locals are quick to point out beautiful parks, local eateries, or insights on navigating the city’s many family-friendly amenities," the survey said.
Oceanside - 39
Visitors of Oceanside said locals embody the breezy coastal lifestyle that defines this beach town. Travelers said locals were approachable and laid-back.
"With a love for outdoor activities and seaside relaxation, residents are always happy to recommend their favorite surf spots or local restaurants with ocean views," the survey said.
Anaheim - 46
Travelers who visited Anaheim said locals are as bright and lively as the city's theme parks. According to the survey, visitors felt like locals welcomed them into the magic that defines Anaheim.
"Known for their welcoming attitudes and love of family-friendly activities, residents are eager to share tips on navigating Disneyland or finding hidden gems in the city’s growing culinary scene."
Simi Valley - 53
In Simi Valley, travelers said locals are known for their suburban friendliness and strong community ties. Many said being in Simi Valley felt like a peaceful retreat within the bustling Southern California region.
"With a backdrop of scenic mountain views, locals are quick to offer tips on hiking trails or family-friendly events," the survey said.
Fullerton - 58
Fullerton residents are artistic and friendly, visitors said, mirroring the community's growing cultural scene.
"Whether recommending a live music venue or sharing insights about local art spaces, residents are quick to make visitors feel like part of Fullerton’s creative heartbeat," the survey said.
Corona - 63
Residents of Corona were lauded for their love of the outdoors and relaxed energy. Visitors said they loved experiencing the beauty of the landscape and warmth of the people.
"Residents often share tips on hiking trails or local events, making visitors feel part of the city’s active, community-focused lifestyle."
Santa Clarita - 70
Travelers in Santa Clarita said they admired the city's family-oriented nature.
"With a strong sense of community and pride in their city’s outdoor spaces, locals often suggest family-friendly activities or scenic spots," the survey said.
Orange - 76
According to the survey, travelers enjoyed Orange's suburban charm and connecting with locals who shared a connection to the historic Olde Town
"Whether discussing the city’s rich architectural heritage or recommending nearby parks, locals show pride in their well-preserved community," the survey said
Thousand Oaks - 77
Visitors of Thousand Oaks said the city has a peaceful and welcoming vibe, which helped them feel connected to the natural world.
"Known for their love of nature and strong community ties, locals are quick to share tips on hiking trails or suggest family-friendly activities," the survey said.
Santa Rosa - 88
Travelers said locals in Santa Rosa are warm and inviting like the surrounded wine country. According to the survey, residents helped visitors experience a perfect blend of relaxation and exploration.
"Locals often share their love for outdoor adventures or suggest a nearby vineyard, welcoming visitors with open arms," the survey said.
Ontario - 95
Travelers said residents were eager to share Ontario's best-kept secrets.
"Known for their love of outdoor adventures, residents are quick to suggest nearby hiking spots or point visitors toward local shops," the survey said.
Torrance - 97
The survey said Torrance locals exude a sunny and laid back energy that matches the coastal feel.
"Whether it’s recommending a beach or sharing their love for the local arts scene, residents are always approachable and eager to help," the survey said.
Garden Grove - 105
In Garden Grove, visitors said residents highlighted the city's mix of cultural influences and had a vibrant and inviting energy.
"Whether it’s suggesting a local festival or offering tips on nearby attractions, locals take pride in their town’s diversity and laid-back vibe," the survey said.
Vallejo - 111
Vallejo visitors said residents were approachable and had pride in their city's maritime history and cultural diversity. Many left the town feeling like they had discovered a hidden gem in the Bay Area.
"Residents often suggest visiting local waterfront spots or share stories about the city’s naval heritage," the survey said.
Rancho Cucamonga - 122
According to the survey, Rancho Cucamonga's residents are known for loving the outdoors and having active lifestyles. Travelers said local recommended hiking trails and the best places for family-friendly fun.
"Residents are quick to offer a warm welcome, and their enthusiasm for the city’s balance of suburban tranquility and accessibility to Southern California’s attractions makes visitors feel right at home," the survey said.
Riverside - 123
Visitors said Riverside residents were eager to suggest visiting local parks and art galleries out of pride for the city's blend of history and modernity.
"Their welcoming, down-to-earth nature ensures that visitors feel both connected to Riverside’s rich past and excited by its vibrant, evolving cultural scene," the survey said.
Modesto - 132
Travelers admired Modesto locals' pride in their agricultural roots and close-knit community.
"Their down-to-earth nature ensures that travelers feel at home in this central California town," the survey said.
In the survey, travelers were asked about the most memorable act of kindness they experienced in California and 42 percent said locals offered directions or assistance and 25 percent said locals helped them during an emergency.
Travelers said they were often invited to local events and gatherings. About 16 percent of visitors said residents even went out of their way to personally guide them or offer them a ride.
A whopping 85 percent of travelers said they returned to cities specifically because of the kindness they experienced during a previous trip.
