“Yeah, I was really happy when my A.D. reached out,” said Chloe Hobart of North Middlesex, “and sent me and my teammates an invitation, so I am really excited for Saturday to play in front of some coaches and showcase my skills.”
“Yeah, I’m really excited,” said Rudy Apollon of Nashoba. “It’s like all the best players from all the schools around, and I think it’s just a great opportunity, and I’m thankful for everyone.”
Administrators from the Boys & Girls Club said they are excited for the players.
“These kids deserve a chance to be seen,” said Jeff Bercume, CEO of the Boys & Girls Club of Fitchburg and Leominster. “We are going to have some colleges at the game recruiting. It’s going to be a really competitive game, the rosters are strong, and I’m just really excited to see them play.”
“It’s just amazing, the opportunity we have to share this with the community,” said Barbara Mahoney, chair of the board of the Boys & Girls Club of Fitchburg and Leominster, “to raise awareness of what we are doing here at the club.”

FITCHBURG, Mass. —
Fitchburg Fire Chief Dante Suarez is suing the city and Mayor Samantha Squailia, alleging that he was placed on leave in retaliation for opposing a decision to eliminate an emergency alert system.
Suarez, a Fitchburg firefighter since 1995 and chief since 2021, alleges he was placed on administrative leave around February 2026. His complaint alleges that he is the only non-white department chief in the city.
The 21-page complaint provides the chief's view of a long feud with the mayor and other city leaders.
According to Suarez's complaint, he opposed Squailia's plan to eliminate the city's contract with an emergency notification provider as a cost-cutting measure. The chief said he also reached out "approximately monthly" to check on the city's progress toward finding a replacement vendor.
"The Mayor's response to a Fire Chief's repeated questions about emergency preparedness was irritation," the lawsuit states.
Suarez said he then "took matters into his own hands" and made multiple attempts to purchase the service through a city account but was repeatedly denied.
While this was unfolding, Suarez alleges that the mayor was "openly telling City employees that she strongly disliked Suarez," the lawsuit alleges.
After nearly a year, when the city agreed to a new purchase agreement with the same emergency notification vendor, Suarez's complaint said oversight of the program was moved to another city department.
The complaint further alleges that Squailia sided with the union in a grievance regarding overtime pay and obstructed the chief's attempt to promote two firefighters to the rank of Fire Captain. One of the candidates, the lawsuit notes, is also a person of color.
Suarez's complaint said the city opened a misconduct investigation into him early this year and placed him on administrative leave in February.
He said the investigation "by its own admission suffered from a discrepancy of facts," but he was subsequently offered a choice between demotion or termination.
"Defendants thereby stripped Suarez of his ability to perform as Fire Chief, damaged his professional reputation, and threatened the termination of the employment relationship unless he accepted a demotion," the complaint states.
The four-count complaint alleges state whistleblower retaliation, First Amendment retaliation, race discrimination and retaliation, and tortious interference. Suarez requests reinstatement as fire chief, restoration of duties and benefits, compensation, damages, legal fees and a jury trial.

Ginny's Helping Hand & Food Pantry of Leominster will once again be the primary beneficiary of festival organizing committee Beers for Good after a $6,000 donation was made to the nonprofit – along with a $1,500 donation to Fitchburg Civic Days – from the 2025 event.
That giving brings to more than $109,000 that Beers for Good has donated to Central Massachusetts nonprofits since its inception in 2008.
"It really helps us do the work that we do every single day," Ginny Helping Hand Inc. Executive Director Brandon Robbins said at the 2025 check presentation. "Without support like this, we couldn't support the amount of people that we do. We have seen a huge increase in the number of people who we are serving — both from Leominster and from Fitchburg. And, as that number continues to tick up and tick up, we need to find more community partners to meet the need in our community.
"Without events like this, we wouldn't be able to do that."
Representatives from Ginny's Helping Hand will be at the festival to share the nonprofit’s mission of providing essential resources and support to individuals and families in need, fostering a stronger, more compassionate community.
Robbins said Ginny's served more than 60,000 people across North Central Massachusetts — mostly from Fitchburg and Leominster — in 2024, with about a 10 percent increase each month year over year in 2025.
"The festival was a great opportunity for us to get the word out about the services that we provide to people who might need it," he said. "We are really appreciative of the festival for choosing Ginny's to partner with us because this will go a long way for people who need it."
Volunteer members of Beers for Good made a formal check presentation to Robbins and Fitchburg Mayor Sam Squailia for Civic Days at Fitchburg City Hall following last year's event.
"A huge thank you to Beers for Good, where I accepted a generous donation to Fitchburg Civic Days from the proceeds of this year's 15th Annual Nashua River Brewers Festival at Riverfront Park," Squailia said. "Beers for Good, the awesome volunteer team behind the festival, continues to live up to their name: using craft beer to support our community good.
"Thank you to everyone who attended, poured, volunteered, and supported our home festival tradition."
The 2026 "Last Call" festival on June 27 will do it up one more time with craft brewers from throughout New England, three food trucks, and both local and returning favorite bands of the fest.
The Nashua River Brewers Festival is thrilled to welcome Our So-Called Live Music to the festival stage this year, along with the return of Boston ska-punk favorite Pink Slip for a second straight year, as well as Worcester-based two-time headliner Michael Kane & The Morning Afters.
Root Natural Foods, Fitchburg Public Market’s Taco Queen and festival staple The Grateful Dog out of Ayer will be serving grilled cheese, paninis, tacos, hot dogs and more as this year’s food trucks.
This year's event begins at 1 p.m. with a "last call" at 5 p.m.
Tickets are $35 both online and through our partner ticket vendors in advance and $45 the day of the event. Full 4 oz. pours and a 2026 commemorative glass are all included in the admission price.
There is a $20 designated driver ticket for those who want to enjoy the day of music, food, and excitement at the park.
