Quick take
MAGNOLIA — Hunter Andrews was simply unstoppable in the 16th edition of the Magnolia Bowl on Friday night at Mustang Stadium.
The three-star recruit and Utah commit ran for over 200 yards for the third consecutive game while tying his career high with five touchdowns to lead Magnolia to a 44-14 victory over rival Magnolia West in a District 10-5A Division I matchup.
Andrews ran for three touchdowns in the first half during a 28-0 run before adding two more long scores in the second half to help the Bulldogs bring home the Mag Bowl trophy for the first time since 2020.
“It’s definitely the best game of my career so far,” Andrews said. “The last two years they’ve got the best of us, and it feels good to actually come together and win and win big, too.”
Highlights
The teams traded punts on the opening drives of the game before the Bulldogs went on to score on their next four possessions.
Tulley Barretto recovered a fumble in the end zone, off a rush from Andrews at the goal line, for the opening score with 5:24 left in the first quarter.
Andrews soon redeemed himself after breaking free for a 93-yard touchdown run late in the quarter before rushing for a 2-yard touchdown run up the right side untouched early in the second quarter for a 21-0 advantage.
Following a blocked punt, which set up the Bulldogs at the Magnolia West 29-yard line, Andrews found the end zone for the third time in the first half with a 5-yard touchdown run up the left side untouched with 4:49 left to make it 28-0.
Magnolia West got on the board with a 7-yard touchdown run from Terry Daniels, cutting the deficit to 28-7 at the half. The Mustangs kept the momentum by scoring on the opening drive of the second half with Brandon Taylor’s 78-yard touchdown catch from Bryson Broadway, cutting the deficit to 28-14.
But the Bulldogs quickly responded as Andrews picked up his fourth and fifth scores in the third quarter on runs of 45 and 49 yards, respectively. A fourth quarter safety finished the scoring.
What it means
Magnolia, ranked No. 9 in the Chronicle’s Class 5A poll, picked up its fourth consecutive victory to move to 5-2, 4-1 in district play after surpassing last year’s win total last week in a 33-22 victory over Friendswood. The Bulldogs improved to 6-10 all-time against the Mustangs.
Magnolia West, which fell to 4-2, 3-1 in district, struggled defensively for the first time since suffering a 28-18 season-opening loss versus Barbers Hill. The Mustangs, which were allowing 6.5 points per game during a four-game win streak, surrendered more points in the first half on Friday than the entire previous four games combined (26 points).
State-ranked Fulshear leads the district standings after picking up its sixth straight triumph against Friendswood, 61-29, to remain perfect at 4-0.
Quotable
“That’s a really good football team over there, they’ve got good players and good coaches,” Magnolia coach Craig Martin said. “A rivalry game like this is stressful, it’s a stressful week and we had some things go our way certainly. But man, I’m really proud of the way our kids played and competed.”
Game balls
Andrews, who ran for a combined 459 yards in wins over Angleton and Friendswood, added five rushing scores for a total of 13 this season. He picked up close to 200 yards on the three long scores alone.
The 6-2, 215-pound back/athlete is the No. 76 player in his position across the country and the No. 100 overall player in Texas for this class, according to 247Sports. He committed to Utah in June.
“He’s a phenomenal young man first and foremost and on top of that, he’s a really good football player — I’m happy for him,” Martin said. “This is his third year on varsity and the first time to be able to take this trophy home and to have the performance that he did tonight, I’m sure that felt good for him and just really proud of him.”
