Some might see Corona as the La Mirada baseball team’s Kryptonite, but then again, this is what Corona does to every team. That’s why the Panthers are ranked No. 1 in the country by Maxpreps.
La Mirada knocked off previously unbeaten Huntington Beach and Mater Dei to reach the championship of the prestigious Boras Classic tournament Friday at JSerra High. But the Panthers showed again that they’re simply on another level.
Corona beat La Mirada convincingly, 8-3, for the second time this season to improve to 11-0.
Corona also beat La Mirada, 10-1, on March 5 in the Perfect Game SoCal Showdown championship game. Those are the only two losses for the Matadores (10-2) this season.
Corona jumped on the Matadores in the first inning with Billy Carlson’s three-run homer.
The Panthers added a run in the second and third innings to take a 5-0 lead, and they led 8-0 before the Matadores scored three runs over the final two innings.
Panthers starting pitcher Jason Gerfers went six innings and allowed three hits and two runs.
La Mirada’s Aiden Aguayo had two of his team’s three hits and also had an RBI.

The Lancers, who improved to 11-1, took a 3-0 lead in the first inning and led 5-0 before the Apaches scored their lone run in the sixth inning on Damian Catano’s groundout.

Thatcher also was solid at the plate, going 3 for 3 with a double and three RBIs. Nate Callaway doubled, scored twice and drove in a run.
The Eagles are 7-2-1 and 2-0 in the Mission Valley League
