Ahead of his album’s release last year, Buckingham spoke with Relix for its December 2021 issue and shared about his inspiration behind the release. “It may have been a little bit inspired by Stevie [Nicks],” he said of his former romantic partner and Fleetwood Mac bandmate. “It might have been a little bit inspired by my wife. The rest of it is just sort of a scenario that you’re envisioning. [It’s someone] who feels like they’re not as unified with another group of people as you’d like them to be. Everybody’s kind of waiting for this arc to get to the other side.”

Even in a group notorious for turmoil, it came as a shock when earlier this year Fleetwood Mac fired Lindsey Buckingham, a key member of what many consider the band's classic lineup. Buckingham sued, and in his first television interview since being ousted, he revealed that he and the band have settled that lawsuit.

"I'm happy enough with it," Buckingham said. "I'm not out there trying to twist the knife at all. I'm trying to look at this with some level of compassion, some level of wisdom."

"It hurt for a while," he said. "I did walk around for a few months with a visceral reaction to that."

Buckingham has a 43-year history with Fleetwood Mac. He helped shape their classic sound and wrote some of their biggest hits. In January, the band was honored at the MusiCares Benefit Grammy weekend, but it would be Buckingham's last performance with Fleetwood Mac. Two days later, he heard from their manager.

"Irving Azoff called me up and he was basically screaming at me," Buckingham said. "He was screaming at me on the phone saying, 'You've really done it this time.' And I had no idea what he was talking about. He said, 'Stevie never wants to be on stage with you again,' and I'm going, 'Why?'"

In an interview with CBS News earlier this year, bandmates Mick Fleetwood and Stevie Nicks blamed it on Buckingham's reluctance to sign off on a new tour. "This team wanted to get out on the road. And one of the members did not want to get out on the road for a year," Nicks said.

Buckingham insists he had agreed to postpone his own solo tour to join the band, but said Azoff told him Nicks didn't like his behavior at the MusiCares event. She complained that he had smirked behind her when she gave her acceptance speech.

"It appeared to me that she was looking for something to hang on me, in order to instigate some kind of coup. Irving told me a couple of days later that she'd given the band an ultimatum and either I had to go or she was going to go," Buckingham said.

Asked if he has any sense of why Nicks would have reached that point, Buckingham said, "I don't know. None of it makes sense to me, you know? Fleetwood Mac, the five of us together is in my mind, is a very sacred thing."

Buckingham and Nicks were a duo, professionally and romantically, when they joined Fleetwood Mac together in 1975. But they broke up during the recording of the landmark "Rumours" album. The song "Go Your Own Way" is about their breakup.

"I was not the one doing the leaving. She left me. But there was never really any chance to get anything like closure because that takes perhaps some distance," Buckingham said.

Buckingham described his relationship with Nicks as "fragmented," but he believes there's "still a lot of love there." Over the years, Buckingham said the two have spent time together outside of the band.

"In sort of spurts though, you know? In 2011 when I did my solo album, 'Seeds We Sow,' I spent a ton of time over at her house …and we got along great. I mean the chemistry is the chemistry," he said.

Buckingham also revealed that he hasn't spoken to any member of the band since his firing almost a year ago.

"I have had, only in the last couple of weeks, I have gotten an email, which I expected to get, from Christine McVie," he said. Buckingham and McVie recorded an album together last year and went on tour.

"She wrote me an email and basically said, 'Dearest Lindsey, just know that I had nothing to do with any of this. Know that I miss you so much.' She said, 'I believe deep in Stevie's heart that she would like you to come home,'" Buckingham said.

He believes it could mean Nicks may have already gotten over what happened earlier this year.

"That maybe, underneath everything, Stevie would like to see me back already, that maybe she feels ambivalent about what's going on. This could just be Christine expressing wishful thinking or expressing something she thinks will make me feel better," he said.

Buckingham said he's open to getting back with Fleetwood Mac but isn't expecting a reunion.

"I'm pretty much figuring that I won't because a lot of people who know how convoluted Fleetwood Mac's politics have been will say two years from now they're gonna … and I'm like, 'I'm not so sure.' You know, it's something is a little different this time," he said.

What's different? He's not sure. Instead, Buckingham has spent the year putting together a retrospective of his solo work and will tour behind it into the New Year.

"I'm not someone who necessarily likes to look back. I like to look forward. And that certainly served me well this year. But I was quite taken by curating a 35-year plus body of work … to be able to go out and celebrate that has been really very cathartic. Yeah. So I am having a great time."

Palace criticises ‘intrusive, insensitive and inaccurate’ books that speculate on King’s illness

Buckingham Palace has hit out at ‘intrusive and insensitive’ books about the King’s cancer, claimed to have been written by artificial intelligence.

The palace said its legal team was investigating a report that a number of books are being sold on Amazon with false claims about Charles’ illness.

It comes as the King, who has not revealed the type of cancer he has been diagnosed with, issued his first public statement on Saturday evening, thanking the public for its support.

“Any such titles speculating about His Majesty’s diagnosis and treatment are intrusive, insensitive and filled with inaccuracies,” a spokesperson for Buckingham Palace told the Mail on Sunday. “Our legal team will be looking at the issue closely. We call on any individuals or organisations facilitating their sale to withdraw them immediately.”

The newspaper reported seven biographies making false claims about Charles’ health in the wake of his cancer diagnosis are on sale on Amazon. The online giant has since deleted several of the books, which were allegedly written by AI algorithms and appear alongside best-selling legitimate royal biographies on the site.

The monarch announced on Monday that he has been diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer and is currently being treated for the disease, having only acceded to the throne 17 months ago.

In his first public comment on his diagnosis, Charles expressed his “most heartfelt thanks” to the nation for their “many messages of support and good wishes”. In the statement to the public issued by Buckingham Palace on Saturday, the monarch also said it was “equally heartening” to hear how sharing his diagnosis has helped to promote public understanding of cancer.

An Amazon spokesman told the Mail that the company put in “significant time and resources” to ensure books being sold on its website followed its “content guidelines”.

They added: “We don't allow AI-generated content that violates our content guidelines, including content that creates a disappointing customer experience. We have removed the titles we found that violated our guidelines.”

The Independent has approached Buckingham Palace and Amazon for further comment.

About five miles east of the rural farming town of Buckingham and almost entirely hidden from the county highway by tall trees and overgrown grasses and saplings, Geneseo Consolidated School quietly observed the 100th anniversary of its first graduating class this past May.

The rural school district’s first building was completed in 1921 in section 15 of Geneseo Township and the following spring the very first high school class including David Ewing, Mary Hayward, Anna Raudabaugh, and Florence Stoakes graduated.

The final class, a class of 18, graduated 44 years later in 1966, bringing the total number of Geneseo graduates to 472.

Today a group of Geneseo graduates including 1956 graduate Judy (nee Wood) Holst is spearheading an effort to commemorate the school site permanently with a marker before more of the once mighty rural school is further lost to both time and the elements.

On a sunny, hot day in early July, Holst visited the new Geneseo Consolidated School display located on the upper floor of the Traer Historical Museum.

As she examined old yearbooks and gently turned through newspaper clippings and photographs that are part of the display, she spoke about her and other Geneseo graduates’ feelings regarding the school now buried by the wilderness – only the front of the main building which features the name of the school is still visible from the county highway.

“We’re of the generation that feels too much history is being ignored and forgotten,” Holst said. “Before [the school] is completely disintegrated, we’d like to do something to have it commemorated for the future … a sign or a memorial stone.”

After the final 12th-grade class graduated in 1966, Geneseo high schoolers began attending nearby Dysart High School – forming the new Dysart-Geneseo district – while Geneseo’s elementary and junior high students remained at the Geneseo school.

In 1982, the Geneseo school building was closed permanently when Dysart-Geneseo consolidated with La Porte City Community School, creating the current Union Community School District.

Today Church of Promise, a nondenominational Evangelical church, owns the property which includes the school buildings. Originally the church – which was founded in 1997 – had plans to use the school buildings but the presence of asbestos and the general disrepair of the buildings precluded such use, according to Holst.

In 2012 the church built a new place of worship directly in front of the Geneseo School buildings.

Several signs warning visitors to stay away from the buildings stand sentinel around the school now including a sign warning of video surveillance near the separate teacher dormitory which is located behind the main school building.

Standing in front of the Geneseo school buildings today is a difficult scene to absorb. The demise of a once vibrant rural community hub, nestled among the idyllic rolling fields of northern Tama County, is probably not how the last nor the first class of Geneseo graduates would have wanted their school to spend its waning years.

For those like Holst who still consider the building’s brick walls a familiar space, the need to recognize what once was, before it’s completely lost, is urgent.

Geneseo School is fairly unique among Iowa’s many school districts – both past and present – as it was never connected to a town.

“No town was ever associated with it,” Holst explained. “Everybody had to be bussed. It was a very close-knit farming community. Between the school and the Methodist church – very close.”

“The Geneseo Consolidated school was the cultural center of the community,” declares a description of the school district found among the museum’s many display items on July 7. “Music and drama productions were important events and well attended. … In the early years, there was an orchestra, but it was a victim of the Depression years.”

The school’s colors were purple and gold and the school’s mascot was the Wolves.

Part of Holst’s desire in recognizing the 100th anniversary of the school is to put out a call for Geneseo alum to contact her. The more individuals she can track down, the easier she feels it will be to kickstart any effort to place a commemorative marker or rock near the school site.

Two school songs are included as part of the Traer Museum’s Geneseo School display. A document details both songs’ lyrics but questions which is the “official” song.

“We’re loyal to you Geneseo / We’re purple and gold Geneseo / We’ll back you to stand against the best in the land / for we know you can win Geneseo,” the first song states.

Holst is hoping all these years later, those Geneseo graduates still here have never lost that loyalty to the little rural school without a town.

“No one wants to give up their identity,” Holst said as she closed the yearbook for the class of 1956 – her class – that she found among the museum’s treasures.

As the front cover flipped shut, Holst’s photo – a black-and-white image of a young high school girl nicknamed ‘Woody’ – located on the first page in the bottom right corner smiled back proudly.

BUCKINGHAM, Iowa—Janet and Mike Shock reclined in loungers while trying to write the first sentence of this story.

Janet offered a literal interpretation of my misfortune: “Stranded in Buckingham, Iowa,” she said.

Mike veered toward a more universal opener. “Stranded in the middle of nowhere,” he said.

We met serendipitously only a few hours earlier. The Shocks welcomed me to their home, my teeth chattering after I slammed my rental car into a snow drift on a closed road a few hundred feet away. The walk by this native Californian to their door — in 12-degree, blizzard conditions — was brutal: I was wearing a thin jacket, and no boots or gloves.

I was on my way to watch Kamala Harris shake hands with folks like the Shocks at a coffee shop in Waterloo; then on to a nearby Baptist church, and a town hall in Bettendorf. Janet wasn’t surprised the campaign scratched the coffee and church from its Sunday schedule because the roads were so dire.

The drive from Buckingham to Bettendorf is 140 miles; and the street where my car was stuck — the only way out — was blocked by a head-on collision on one side and an overturned semi on the other. While we got to know each other in their kitchen, Mike pulled on several layers of clothes, warmed up the truck and prepared his snow plow.

Not long after, Janet started in on her chili and biscuits. She joked we’d all watch the Oscars together. It was 9 a.m.

Anyone familiar with Iowans won’t be surprised by their generosity. Over 12 hours, they fed me; pulled my Nissan Maxima out of the middle of the road and into their driveway; and good-naturedly refreshed a website that monitors closures. Mike taught me some about farming, from the utility of corn crib barns to the process of “detasseling,” removing the immature pollen-producing bodies, or tassels, from the tops of corn plants.

With the Iowa caucuses less than a year away, nonpolitical debates felt appropriate, so I warily moderated what I came to know was a periodic faceoff between the Shocks: The best sandwiches to eat with chili.

He went to school in nearby Traer, where it’s customary to have cheese sandwiches with the meal. But she, a product of Waterloo schools, keeps to a tradition of peanut butter, hence the jar of JIF next to our butter and biscuits. We also talked about their family, and they FaceTimed with my wife and baby.

I tweeted about their kindness, and many others, inside and out of politics, shared stories about being helped by Iowa strangers during a bone-chilling adventure.

Even Harris weighed in after her staff briefed her on my first brush with Iowa hospitality. In a voicemail she left me, the fellow Californian compared the roadside support I’d received to Iowa’s version of the American Automobile Association.

“Good thing you have that ‘chili friend,’” Harris said. “We’re going to miss you in Bettendorf, but I’m glad you’re safe.”

The Shocks don’t consider themselves political people. They voted for Hillary Clinton in 2016, though they weren’t especially excited about her candidacy. “I felt like if I didn’t vote, I couldn’t complain,” Janet said.

With Donald Trump as president, that would have been problematic. They don’t like his border wall, dismissing it as expensive and unnecessary. They’re convinced he made myriad promises about jobs and reforming government he hasn’t kept. The Shocks aren’t close to deciding on a candidate for 2020, but they want someone who can restore a sense of decency in the country.

Janet was preparing a supper of goulash and corn when the Oscars came on. I told her about the tweets, and she urged me to write something about it.

“I want people to know that there are good people in the world that would take a stranger in,” she said. “We’re all people. We’re all human beings. God put us on this earth for a reason. We should all take care of each other.”

Before pulling out of their driveway at about 9 p.m., I told her it wasn’t my thing to write about myself. So she suggested we make it about her state.

“I want people to understand,” she said, “what Iowa is all about.”
