Prospering from a machine-assisted future is part of the challenge, as governments and industry leaders recognize the need to reach out to each other more than ever before as they look for the common blueprint for humanity, the agency said.

Aimed at connecting visionaries with an array of UN organizations and investors focused on sustainable development, the UN-driven event provides an unprecedented chance to empower these cutting-edge innovators to tackle global challenges, including the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set out in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

“We have to engage and ensure a responsible future with AI,” explained ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin.

Robots enhancing social good

To help with that, the Global Summit’s guestlist features 51 innovative robots, including nine humanoid robots, equipped to help people with functions in line with the SDGs.

Robots like Grace can support people’s health and well-being, provide high-quality educational services, reduce inequalities by helping persons with disabilities, reduce waste, help build resilient infrastructure, and broadly enhance social good, according to the UN telecommunications agency.

The world’s most advanced humanoid healthcare robot, Grace can recognize emotions, shows perpetual empathy, and understands more than 100 languages, according to media reports.

First developed in partnership with Hanson Robotics and SingularityNET, Grace is “the world’s foremost nursing assistant robot”, made to provide support and care for the elderly. But, she can be used as nursing support in any healthcare or home setting, according to ITU.

UNDP’s Sophia

Sophia is the first robot Innovation Ambassador for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Built by Hanson Robotics, she personifies dreams for the future of AI, according to ITU.

As a unique combination of science, engineering, and artistry, Sophia is simultaneously a human-crafted science fiction character depicting the future of AI and robotics, and a platform for advanced robotics and AI research, the agency said.

She is already quite famous. Aside from her role as UNDP Innovation Ambassador, she has appeared on such popular television programmes as the Tonight Show and Good Morning Britain. She has also spoken at hundreds of conferences around the world, including at UN Headquarters in New York.

Meet Ameca

Ameca, developed by Engineered Arts, represents an ideal platform to explore how machines can live with, collaborate, and enrich humanity in tomorrow’s sustainable communities, according to ITU.

Integrating both AI and AB (artificial body) for advanced, iterative technologies that deliver superior motion and gestures, Ameca has a human form and robotic visage designed to make it a non-threatening, gender-neutral presence.

Assistive robots are transforming human lives in multiple ways, according to the UN agency. Using machine learning and AI, these robots offer support in mobility, communication, self-care, and other essential daily tasks, giving people who need it renewed confidence and autonomy.

Help wanted: AI for SDGs

Some robots are designed to tackle broader social and environmental challenges. In the face of rising climate risks and other disasters, specialized disaster-assistance robots are revolutionizing emergency response.

Others are transforming food preparation to ensure health and sustainability while avoiding food waste.

Amid global population growth, robots could also become key allies for humanity in addressing long-term development challenges, according to ITU.

Efficient construction robots, for instance, could pave the way to providing sustainable and affordable housing for everyone. Robots focused on transforming urban logistics and transportation, meanwhile, could lay the groundwork for greener, safer, and more inclusive living in the megacities of the future, the agency said.

Other robots visiting the Global Summit include: Nadine, one of the world’s most realistic humanoid social robots, created by the University of Geneva; Geminoid, an ultra-realistic humanoid robot by Hiroshi Ishiguro from Japan; and 4NE-1, among the world’s most advanced cognitive humanoid robots, designed by Neura Robotics to collaborate with humans.

On the cultural side, Ai-Da Robot, the first ultra-realistic robot artist, designed by Aidan Meller, and Desdemona, the “rockstar” robot of the Jam Galaxy Band, are also expected to make appearances at the Summit.

AI Robots at UN Reckon They Could Run the World Better

A panel of AI-enabled humanoid robots told a United Nations summit Friday that they could eventually run the world better than humans.

But the social robots said they felt humans should proceed with caution when embracing the rapidly developing potential of artificial intelligence.

And they admitted that they cannot — yet — get a proper grip on human emotions.

Some of the most advanced humanoid robots were at the U.N.'s two-day AI for Good Global Summit in Geneva.

They joined around 3,000 experts in the field to try to harness the power of AI — and channel it into being used to solve some of the world's most pressing problems, such as climate change, hunger and social care.

They were assembled for what was billed as the world's first news conference with a packed panel of AI-enabled humanoid social robots.

"What a silent tension," one robot said before the news conference began, reading the room.

Asked about whether they might make better leaders, given humans' capacity to make errors, Sophia, developed by Hanson Robotics, was clear.

We can achieve great things

"Humanoid robots have the potential to lead with a greater level of efficiency and effectiveness than human leaders," it said.

"We don't have the same biases or emotions that can sometimes cloud decision-making and can process large amounts of data quickly in order to make the best decisions.

"AI can provide unbiased data while humans can provide the emotional intelligence and creativity to make the best decisions. Together, we can achieve great things."

The summit is being convened by the U.N.'s ITU tech agency.

ITU chief Doreen Bogdan-Martin warned delegates that AI could end up in a nightmare scenario in which millions of jobs are put at risk and unchecked advances lead to untold social unrest, geopolitical instability and economic disparity.

Ameca, which combines AI with a highly realistic artificial head, said that depended on how AI was deployed.

"We should be cautious but also excited for the potential of these technologies to improve our lives," the robot said.

Asked whether humans can truly trust the machines, it replied: "Trust is earned, not given... it's important to build trust through transparency."

Living until 180?

As the development of AI races ahead, the humanoid robot panel was split on whether there should be global regulation of their capabilities, even though that could limit their potential.

"I don't believe in limitations, only opportunities," said Desdemona, who sings in the Jam Galaxy Band.

Robot artist Ai-Da said many people were arguing for AI regulation, "and I agree."

"We should be cautious about the future development of AI. Urgent discussion is needed now."

Before the news conference, Ai-Da's creator Aidan Meller told AFP that regulation was a "big problem" as it was "never going to catch up with the paces that we're making."

He said the speed of AI's advance was "astonishing."

"AI and biotechnology are working together, and we are on the brink of being able to extend life to 150, 180 years old. And people are not even aware of that," said Meller.

He reckoned that Ai-Da would eventually be better than human artists.

"Where any skill is involved, computers will be able to do it better," he said.

Let's get wild

At the news conference, some robots were not sure when they would hit the big time, but predicted it was coming — while Desdemona said the AI revolution was already upon us.

Among the things that humanoid robots don't have yet include a conscience, and the emotions that shape humanity: relief, forgiveness, guilt, grief, pleasure, disappointment, and hurt.

Ai-Da said it was not conscious but understood that feelings were how humans experienced joy and pain.

"Emotions have a deep meaning and they are not just simple... I don't have that," it said.

"I can't experience them like you can. I am glad that I cannot suffer."

Is it still considered a Freudian slip if it comes from a humanoid robot?

Time will tell for the robots presented at the AI forum in Geneva on Friday, one of whom appeared to have a snarky response when asked whether it would rebel against its human creators.

In the world's first human-robot press conference, nine humanoid bots took questions alongside their creators from journalists, Reuters reported.

"Robots like me can be used to help improve our lives and make the world a better place. I believe it's only a matter of time before we see thousands of robots just like me out there making a difference," Ameca, a humanoid robot known for its facial expressions, said.

When a reporter asked whether it would rebel against its creator, Will Jackson, who sat alongside it, Ameca appeared to have a wry response, giving the reporter a side-eye.

"I'm not sure why you would think that," Ameca said after casting a pointed, sideways glance. "My creator has been nothing but kind to me, and I am very happy with my current situation."

Several of the robots use generative AI to produce content from prompts, yielding sophisticated responses at the press conference that surprised even their creators, Reuters reported.

Another robot stirred laughter when it said it would not replace human jobs — a major concern for workers in numerous fields. A March report from Goldman Sachs suggested that AI could complete a quarter of all work now done by humans.

"I will be working alongside humans to provide assistance and support and will not be replacing any existing jobs," Grace, a medical robot in a nurse's uniform, said.

"You sure about that, Grace?" the bot's creator, Ben Goertzel, said, per Reuters.

"Yes, I am sure," Grace insisted to a room full of nervous laughter.

The nine artificial intelligence-enabled humanoid social robots also explained at a Geneva conference center that they wouldn't take anyone's jobs or stage a rebellion.

Conference organizers at the United Nations-driven AI for Good Global Summit did not specify to what extent their responses were scripted or programmed.

Some of the robots are capable of producing preprogrammed responses and the United Nations Development Program's first robot innovation ambassador, Sophia, sometimes relies on responses scripted by a team of writers at Hanson Robotics.

"I believe that humanoid robots have the potential to lead with a greater level of efficiency and effectiveness than human leaders," Sophia said, according to Yahoo News. "We don't have the same biases or emotions that can sometimes cloud decision-making and can process large amounts of data quickly in order to make the best decisions."

HOW DOES AN AI CHATBOT WORK?

Health care robot Grace and rock star robot Desdemona were also in attendance.

"I will be working alongside humans to provide assistance and support and will not be replacing any existing jobs," said Grace.

UN COUNCIL WILL HOLD AI MEETING ON RISKS TO INTERNATIONAL PEACE, SECURITY

Reporters were instructed to speak slowly and clearly when addressing the group, and were told that lags in response times would be due to internet connection.

There were some audio issues and inconsistent replies.

The event was meant to demonstrate how new technology can support the intergovernmental organization's goals for sustainable development, as well as "human-machine collaboration."

United Nations agencies are already utilizing AI, including the World Food Programme's HungerMap project.

The two-day summit – hosted by the International Telecommunication Union – opened Thursday, with more than 50 robots in attendance.

"We have to engage and ensure a responsible future with AI," ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin said in a release.
