lm-check

Home is where the heart is. While that saying can sound a tad cliche, it is especially true for many seniors living in America. When given a choice, older adults most often prefer to grow older at home. An AARP study found that three out of four adults over the age of 50 want to stay in their homes and communities as they age.

lm-check

When you begin to think about why, it makes sense. Home offers a sense of security, comfort, and familiarity.

lm-check

The truth is, as we age, we begin to rely on others for help. When a family is too busy or lives too far away to fulfill this role, in-home senior care is often the best solution. Home care services allow seniors to enjoy personal independence while also receiving trustworthy assistance from a trained caregiver.

At Always Best Care, we offer a comprehensive range of home care services to help seniors stay healthy while they get the help they need to remain independent. Aging in Place: The Preferred Choice for Most Seniors

While it's true that some seniors have complicated medical needs that prevent them from staying at home, aging in place is often the best arrangement for seniors and their families. With a trusted caregiver, seniors have the opportunity to live with a sense of dignity and do so as they see fit - something that is unavailable to many older people today.

In-home care makes it possible for millions of seniors to age in place every year. Rather than moving to a strange nursing home, seniors have the chance to stay at home where they feel the happiest and most comfortable.

Here are just a few of the reasons why older men and women prefer to age at home:

How much does a senior's home truly mean to them?

A study published by the American Society on Aging found that more than half of seniors say their home's emotional value means more than how much their home is worth in monetary value. It stands to reason, then, that a senior's home is where they want to grow old.

With the help of elderly care in Shellsburg, IA, seniors don't have to age in a sterilized care facility. Instead, they can age gracefully in the place they want to be most: their home. In contrast, seniors who move to a long-term care facility must adapt to new environments, new people, and new systems that the facility implements. At this stage in life, this kind of drastic change can be more harmful than helpful.

Institutional care facilities like nursing homes often put large groups of people together to live in one location. On any given day, dozens of staff members and caregivers run in and out of these facilities. Being around so many new people in a relatively small living environment can be dangerous for a seniors' health and wellbeing. When you consider that thousands of seniors passed away in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, opting for in-home care is often a safer, healthier choice for seniors.

Aging in place has been shown to improve seniors' quality of life, which helps boost physical health and also helps insulate them from viral and bacterial risks found in elderly living facilities.

For many seniors, the ability to live independently with assistance from a caregiver is a priceless option. With in-home care, seniors experience a higher level of independence and freedom - much more so than in other settings like a nursing home. When a senior has the chance to age in place, they get to live life on their own terms, inside the house that they helped make into a home. More independence means more control over their personal lives, too, which leads to increased levels of fulfillment, happiness, and personal gratification. Over time, these positive feelings can manifest into a healthier, longer life.

More independence, a healthier life, and increased comfort are only a few benefits of aging in place. You have to take into consideration the role of cost and convenience. Simply put, it's usually easier and more affordable to help seniors age in place than it is to move them into an institutional care facility. According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, seniors who age in the comfort of their homes can save thousands of dollars per month.

In-home care services from Always Best Care, for instance, are often less expensive than long-term solutions, which can cost upwards of six figures per year. To make matters worse, many residential care facilities are reluctant to accept long-term care insurance and other types of payment assistance.

With Always Best Care's home care services, seniors and their families have a greater level of control over their care plans. In-home care gives seniors the chance to form a bond with a trusted caregiver and also receive unmatched care that is catered to their needs. In long-term care facilities, seniors and their loved ones have much less control over their care plan and have less of a say in who provides their care.

Affordable Care

In-home care is a valuable resource that empowers seniors to age in place on their own terms. However, a big concern for many families and their loved ones is how much in-home care costs. If you're worried that in-home care is too expensive, you may be pleasantly surprised to learn that it is one of the most affordable senior care arrangements available.

Typically, hiring an Always Best Care in-home caregiver for a few hours a week is more affordable than sending your loved one to a long-term care facility. This is true even for seniors with more complex care needs.

At Always Best Care, we will work closely with you and your family to develop a Care Plan that not only meets your care needs, but your budget requirements, too. Once we discover the level of care that you or your senior need, we develop an in-home care plan that you can afford.

In addition to our flexible care options, families should also consider the following resources to help offset potential home care costs:

If your loved one qualifies, Medicaid may help reduce in-home care costs. Review your IA's Medicaid program laws and benefits, and make sure your senior's financial and medical needs meet Medicaid eligibility requirements.
Attendance and aid benefits through military service can cover a portion of the costs associated with in-home care for veterans and their spouses.
Many senior care services like in-home care are included in long-term care insurance options. Research different long-term care solutions to find a plan that provides coverage for senior care.
Home care can be included as part of a senior's private insurance plan. Read over your loved one's insurance policy carefully or speak with their insurance provider to determine if in-home care is covered.
Depending on the life insurance plan, you may be able to apply your policy toward long-term care. You may be able to use long-term-care coverage to help pay for in-home elderly care.

Compassionate Care. Trusted Caregivers.

When you or your senior loved one needs assistance managing daily tasks at home, finding a qualified caregiver can be challenging. It takes a special kind of person to provide reliable care for your senior loved one. However, a caregiver's role involves more than meal preparation and medication reminders. Many seniors rely on their caregivers for companionship, too.

Our companion care services give seniors the chance to socialize in a safe environment and engage in activities at home. These important efforts boost morale and provide much-needed relief from repetitive daily routines. A one-on-one, engaging conversation can sharpen seniors' minds and give them something in which to be excited.

At Always Best Care, we only hire care providers that we would trust to care for our own loved ones. Our senior caregivers in Shellsburg, IA understand how important it is to listen and communicate with their seniors. A seemingly small interaction, like a short hug goodbye, can make a major difference in a senior's day. Instead of battling against feelings of isolation, seniors begin to look forward to seeing their caregiver each week.

Understanding the nuances of senior care is just one of the reasons why our care providers are so great at their job.

Unlike some senior care companies, our caregivers must undergo extensive training before they work for Always Best Care. In addition, our caregivers receive ongoing training throughout the year. This training ensures that their standard of care matches up to the high standards we've come to expect. During this training, they will brush up on their communication skills, safety awareness, and symptom spotting. That way, your loved one receives the highest level of non-medical home care from day one.

Assisted Living Referral Services

While it's true that many seniors prefer to age at home, sometimes in-home care isn't the best fit. For those seniors and their families, choosing an assisted living facility makes more sense. Unfortunately, finding the optimal care facility is easier said than done in today's day and age. That's when Always Best Care's assisted living referral services begin to make a lot of sense.

Assisted living is a form of housing intended for seniors who require varying degrees of medical and personal attention. Accommodations may include single rooms, apartments, or shared living arrangements. Assisted living communities are typically designed to resemble a home-like environment and are physically constructed to encourage the independence of residents.

Respite Care Shellsburg, IA

Other services offered within assisted living communities can include some or all of the following:

SHELLSBURG, Iowa — The City of Shellsburg is inviting the public to join community leaders for the grand opening of the new Smith Street Bridge. The dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at 3:30 p.m., Thursday, November 16th. City officials and guests will present information about the bridge; the program will last about 30 minutes and will end with a ceremonial parade of vehicles signifying the decades of service provided by the old bridge and a transition to the future.

"We are very proud to be opening this new bridge into town. It has been an enormous project for a small town, but we have had tremendous assistance from all parties involved. I am confident this bridge will serve generations of Shellsburg residents long and faithfully, just as its predecessor, the historic 110 year old spandrel bridge has done for many generations." - Lonnie Speckner, Mayor, City of Shellsburg

Planning for a new bridge began in 2020 when the city became eligible for an Urban Bridge Funding Grant of $1,000,000 administered through the Iowa DOT to repair or replace the historic Pearl Street Bridge, a concrete-filled, spandrel arch bridge built in 1915, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Additional funds of $600,000 were awarded through the Surface Transportation Block Grant administered by the East Central Iowa Council of Governments. General obligation bonds in the amount of $600,000 were arranged by city officials to complete the anticipated 2.2-million-dollar project.

Peterson Contractors Incorporated led the construction work, which began in March of 2023. Engineers from Origin Design oversaw the project. The new bridge is 181’ long and 30’ wide. It is a 4 span structure. Design and financial planning for this project includes renovations recommended for the old bridge which will be done in 2024-2025, to make it more suitable for pedestrian traffic.

The community wishes to thank Mayor Lonnie M. Speckner and Utility Superintendent Rick Robertson for their leadership and oversight of this immense project. City leadership views the pedestrian bridge as a unique attribute, presenting an opportunity for community gatherings and events.

The new bridge will serve the community of Shellsburg for many years and represents an improved gateway to the Shellsburg business district. The recently updated streetscape and active downtown will be waiting to welcome residents and visitors as they cross over Bear Creek.

Immediately following the ceremony attendees are invited to explore the downtown for a "Sip and Shop", where downtown retailers will feature refreshments, special offers and Shellsburg hospitality.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - Iowa State Auditor Rob Sand (D) released a report on Monday recommending the city of Shellsburg consult legal council after it found a possible conflict of interest.

According to the report, Shellsburg Mayor Lonnie Speckner’s insurance company received more than $20,000 in insurance payments not awarded through a competitive bid process. A claim the city of Shellsburg disagrees with and believes it has the documents to show it created a new fair process to remove those concerns.

Lonnie Speckner owns Speckner Insurance, which is located in Shellsburg. The Iowa State Auditor has released three separate reports over three years showing Speckner’s company receiving city dollars through a no-bid process. Those totals range from around $17,000 to $20,000.

Each report, like the one released on Monday, recommends the city “consult with legal counsel to determine the disposition of this matter” since the amount is over a certain amount.

Emails, which TV9 received from the city of Shellsburg, show the city was asked by a staff member in the auditor’s office to advertise for bids in a newspaper and ask the mayor to step out of the room while discussing the bids in February 2020. Another email shows the city worked with its attorney to create a more formal bid process in March 2020 and February 2021.

Documents show the city did once receive a bid from a different insurance company, which was cheaper than the insurance company owned by the Mayor. The difference was about $3,000.

Brian Reeves, who is a council member for the city, said in a written statement the city had better coverage under the more expensive plan. He declined an on-camera interview and wrote in an email the cheaper insurance was inadequate.

“The other insurances that were presented to us were very inadequate when it came to covering the city, Reeves wrote.” “As far as my vote for the insurance I voted the way I did based on the best coverage for the city.”

He said one example is the more expensive plan-covered tree removal.

Speckner said he’s frustrated the Auditor’s Office keeps “dinging” the city over the insurance it uses because the city is using a bidding process. He also said this isn’t a conflict of interest because somebody else gives his insurance company’s presentation to the city council along with him reclusing himself from the vote and leaving the room.

“I feel like they are unfair because there is no foundation for a conflict of interest,” Speckner said.

He said he believes his insurance company gets picked because it offers the best coverage for the price rather than him being a member of city council.

SHELLSBURG, Iowa (KCRG) - A weekend fire destroyed a Shellsburg home, and everything Chase Meyers and his family own.

The fire started early Saturday morning in the 100 block of Grove Street NW in Shellsburg. What happened next surprised Meyers and his family.

The smoke and flames were still burning on the rubble of what’s left of Chase Meyers’ Shellsburg home two days after the fire first started.

“There were firefighters everywhere,” he said. “You couldn’t even get down the street; I parked down on the opposite side of the road.”

Meyers lived here with his mother and his brother’s family. Two of them are still at the hospital recovering, including his sister-in-law, who jumped from a second-story window.

“She fractured her spine,” he said. “They put plates in her back, but they were already up and walking today.”

Meyers said he didn’t know how the fire started, but said he was happy everyone made it out OK. His family plans to spend a few weeks staying with other families out of state while his brother couch surfs to continue working. What he didn’t realize was how quickly the Shellsburg family would rally around them.

“It was great to see, I woke up Sunday morning, and I went to walk outside, and all of my neighbors were here working away,” said Meyers. “They had like 6 trucks and 4 trailers.”

Brian Reeves is the pastor at Church of Grace where Meyer’s mother is a member.

“She’s one that has a heart of gold,” he said.

He and others in the community have set up a GoFundMe page, as well as a donation fund at the Palo Savings Bank to help the Meyers family with their short-term and long-term needs.

“Financial is the best way to help because they don’t have any way to put those clothing items and the household items until they are able to rebuild,” said Reeves.

“I appreciate everything that everybody is doing,” said Meyers.

Shellsburg, Iowa is getting ready to welcome a new bar & restaurant! Local Edition is set to open within the next few weeks.

It's not everyday that Benton County gets a new restaurant, but that day is coming soon! Local Edition will be taking over the former home of Coop's Roadhouse at 100 Pearl St SW in Shellsburg. The owner of the business is Kirby Patten, who also owns Rock Bar American Grill in Downtown Cedar Rapids.

According to Kirby, Local Edition is a bar and restaurant with both indoor and outdoor seating. The interior will be "warm and cozy," and the exterior will feature a brand new patio. The patio will have boards for games of bags, shaded tables, ambient lighting, and a fireplace to sit around.

As far as food and drinks go, Kirby says the menu will feature a variety of appetizers, fresh burgers, salads, pasta, and chicken wraps, as well as breakfast options on Saturdays and Sundays. The drink menu will have tallboys and ten different beers on tap, plus the restaurant will offer 25oz Bloody Marys on the weekends.

It appears that citizens of Shellsburg are already excited about the opening of Local Edition. A Facebook comment from user Sara Bates reads:

"So excited to have you in town! I’m sure we will be regulars!"

"Congratulations! I’m so glad to see another bar and grill go into that building. My mom & dad owned that bar from 1971-1984, then called the Lazy-H! Lots of good memories in that place!"

Local Edition is set to open in Shellsburg sometime in February, so Benton County residents won't have to wait long! You can get the latest updates from the restaurant by following the official Facebook page HERE.

SHELLSBURG - A fully equipped, round-the-clock fitness center may seem unlikely in a town with a population of just under 1,000, but Kristine and Bob Shultis found a niche in their corner of Benton County.

'We have a bit of a rush in the mornings, before work,” Bob said one morning this week at Train Station Family Fitness in Shellsburg. 'Some come after work, and then kind of scattered through the day we get a bunch of young people, self-employed people who work odd hours.”

Train Station grew out of Shultis' frustration over the inconvenience of working out at a Cedar Rapids fitness club - about a 30-minute drive - after the couple moved to Shellsburg 11 years ago.

There was a privately operated gym in town, but its hours were unpredictable.

'I've been driving by this building and I never saw cars outside it,” Kristine recalled. 'So I approached the owner about whether he was still running this gym. He said, ‘Kind of, but I've moved to Des Moines and my parents are kind of taking it over.'”

Kristine Shultis has worked as a massage therapist since 1997, specializing in treating chronic conditions such as fibromyalgia, arthritis and migraine headaches. She incorporated her practice, Whole Earth Natural Health, into the new venture.

'I work with a lot of people who, after their workouts, need a little to recover,” she said. 'I do a lot of rehabilitation for knee replacements.”

The Shultises bought the facility in late 2015. They renovated the gym, added some equipment and opened Train Station Family Fitness Jan. 1, 2016. They're the sole employees and staff.

'The equipment that was already here was generally pretty good,” Bob noted. 'We've added some amenities. Most of it was cosmetic.”

'We painted and cleaned up the place,” Kristine added.

Bob, a self-described 'gym rat,” has been an avid weightlifter, including some competitive events, 'pretty much my entire adult life.” Before launching Train Station, he worked as a parts-supply manager for Clipper WIndpower in Cedar Rapids.

Train Station draws from Palo, Atkins, Vinton and Urbana, according to the couple. The facility is open 24 hours - members have card-key access when it's not staffed - and offers classes in gentle yoga, Tai Chi, meditation and Tae Kwon Do, in which Kristine holds a black belt.

'Most people want to kind of do their own thing,” Bob said, although he often advises members on weight training.

'People do ask for certain classes, but it just isn't cost-effective or in time when you've got one or two people,” he said. 'We like to get four or five people to make it worth the time.”

Video workouts played on the training room's large monitor are one solution.

'You can bring in your own videos and do them in here,” Kristine said.

She also devises workout routines distributed to members via social media.
