NEW HAMPTON, Iowa (KWWL)- Waukon stuffed a New Hampton two-point conversion attempt in overtime to win 28-27, clinching the district title.
The two hot Class 2A District 3 teams met Friday night in a battle of longtime rivals and district leaders.
After losing their first four games to start the season, the new Hampton Chickasaws came into Friday as winners of three in a row.
Waukon also took the field on the back of a three-game winning streak after starting the season 1-4.
The winner of the game claimed at least a share of the district title.
On their first drive of the game, Chickasaw quarterback Ben Gilbert handed it off to Braden McShane who got a block, found a hole and cruised 45 into the endzone to make it 7-0 Chickasaws. The run game was the preferred method of attack for New Hampton on a rainy night.
The Indians had a hard time reviving the offensive engine in the first quarter as a host of Chickasaw defenders sacked Jaxon Brinkman multiple times.
On the other hand, the New Hampton ground game was firing on all Cylinders. Braden McShane was a workhorse carrying the ball down the field.
He capped the drive by punching it in from two yards out to make it 14-0 New Hampton.
On their ensuing drive, the Indians found their ground game. After Graine Curtin found open space and ripped off a nice run, he scored from two yards out a few plays later to make it a seven-point ballgame. After a quick scoring drive, the Indians were right back in it. New Hampton led 14-7 at halftime.
In the second half, on the first Indian drive, Brinkman found a wide-open Carson Hager, who took it into the endzone to knot the game up at 14.
On the next Indian drive, the Indians used some trickery as Brinkman gave it to Jacob Courtney, who then gave it right back, completing a pass to Brinkman, who took it 40 yards to the house and giving Waukon a 21-14 lead.
The Chickasaws tied the one up on an 81-yard drive, capped off by a Braden McShane 19-yard touchdown run with 6:16 to go in the fourth quarter.
The game went into overtime. Both teams scored touchdowns, but the Chickasaws tried to go for two, and the Indians stuffed them to win 28-27.
Waukon finishes the regular season 5-3. New Hampton falls to 3 and 5. That is now four straight for Waukon, and they are on a roll heading into the playoffs.
