LOCKPORT, IL — A LTHS teacher has won a prestigious Advisor of the Year award for SkillsUSA’s Region 3 for his participation in SkillsUSA and career and technical education, according to a release from SkillsUSA.
From student member to standout advisor, Matt Mullins has come full circle with SkillsUSA. Now the chapter advisor at Lockport Township High School, Mullins brings real-world energy and purpose to career and technical education, SkillsUSA said.
He earned his degree in CTE with a focus on technology from Eastern Illinois University and quickly launched his teaching career at Lockport, where he’s led courses ranging from Automotive Technology to Robotics Engineering and 3D Design.
While teaching, he earned a Master’s degree in educational technology and completed several industry certifications to stay aligned with evolving workforce demands, according to a release.
One of his standout initiatives was a resume-building unit rooted in the SkillsUSA Framework, the organization said. Students crafted job-ready resumes, practiced mock interviews, participated in volunteer work and connected class projects to real-world careers.
“I’m proud to guide students through the same SkillsUSA journey that inspired me,” Mullins said in a release. “Helping them grow into skilled, confident professionals is the most rewarding part of my work.”
"Matt is a SkillsUSA champion with a true passion for helping students develop their talents and leadership," said Chelle Travis, executive director of SkillsUSA. "He supports quality programming for students built around the SkillsUSA Framework, which prepares them for further education or joining America’s skilled workforce."
The top five regional finalists will now be interviewed for SkillsUSA Advisor of the Year in Atlanta on June 24 and the national winner will be announced that night at the Opening Session of the SkillsUSA national conference at State Farm Arena in front of 17,000 people, a release states.
SkillsUSA Region 3 includes seven states: Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky.
