Home Care Streamwood, IL

They say that your golden years are the best years of your life. For most older Americans, that's how it should be - a time to relax, reflect, and live life in a familiar place. After all, senior citizens in the U.S. have worked tirelessly to build a better economy, serve their communities, and raise families.

However, as seniors grow older, completing daily tasks like showering and enjoying activities such as visiting the historic Hoosier Grove Park gets harder without someone by their side. Unfortunately, many older Americans aren't able to rely on their adult children for help. The reality in today's world is that family members do not have the skills or time to dedicate to caring for their parents. That's where Always Best Care Senior Services comes in.

Our in-home care services are for people who prefer to stay at home as they grow older but need ongoing care that family or friends cannot provide. More and more older adults prefer to live far away from long-term, institutionalized facilities and closer to the place where they feel most comfortable - their home. Home care in Streamwood, IL is a safe, effective way to give your loved ones the care they need when they need it the most.

The Always Best Care Difference

Since 1996, Always Best Care has provided non-medical in-home care for seniors to help them maintain a healthy lifestyle as they get older. We are proud to have helped more than 25,000 seniors maintain higher levels of dignity and respect. Unlike some senior care companies, we genuinely want to be included in our clients' lives. We believe that personalized care is always the better option over a "one size fits all" approach. To make sure our senior clients receive the best care possible, we pair them with compassionate caregivers who understand their unique needs. That way, they may provide care accordingly without compromising their wellbeing.

The Always Best Care difference lies in life's little moments - where compassionate care and trustworthy experience come together to help seniors live a fruitful, healthy life. Whether you are an aging adult that can't quite keep up with life's daily tasks or the child of a senior who needs regular in-home services, Always Best Care is here to help.

“I again want to compliment Shannon on her fine work as my uncle's caregiver. She truly came from above. Today is his 92nd Birthday and I can't be there, but she has made the day special for him with cake and small gifts. She also keeps close tabs on his failing health and coordinates his care excellently. She goes above and beyond what would be expected. I don't know Rihanna as well, but she, too, sounds like she cares for my uncle in a kind and positive way. My uncle can be demanding and cranky and they both do a good job maintaining an upbeat attitude. Last but not least, I appreciate Ana for juggling so many clients and caregivers, which in our own situation seem to change on a dime, yet she always comes through. Thanks again”

“I recently worked with Michelle Kramer at Always Best Care. I would recommend Michelle to anyone who is navigating Senior care for their loved one. Michelle is so knowledgeable as she has been in the industry for so long. She helped me to find places to move my dad, she knew all the answers to the hard questions that I had. Michelle was just amazing and I literally could not have moved my dad recently without her help. I also used their care facilities in July when I moved my dad to his first memory care facility to help him transition. Their caregivers were great and they were so flexible with the times that I needed someone with my dad.”

What is Non-Medical Senior Care in Streamwood, IL?

lm-check

Home is where the heart is. While that saying can sound a tad cliche, it is especially true for many seniors living in America. When given a choice, older adults most often prefer to grow older at home. An AARP study found that three out of four adults over the age of 50 want to stay in their homes and communities as they age.

lm-check

When you begin to think about why, it makes sense. Home offers a sense of security, comfort, and familiarity.

lm-check

The truth is, as we age, we begin to rely on others for help. When a family is too busy or lives too far away to fulfill this role, in-home senior care is often the best solution. Home care services allow seniors to enjoy personal independence while also receiving trustworthy assistance from a trained caregiver.

lm-check

At Always Best Care, we offer a comprehensive range of home care services to help seniors stay healthy while they get the help they need to remain independent. As your senior loved one gets older, giving them the gift of senior care is one of the best ways to show your love, even if you live far away.

Respite Care

Respite Care Services

According to AARP, more than 53 million adults living in the U.S. provide care to someone over 50 years old. Unfortunately, these caregivers experience stress, exhaustion, and even depression. Our respite care services help family caregivers address urgent obligations, spend time with their children, and enjoy nearby activities. Perhaps more importantly, respite care gives family members time to recharge and regroup. Taking personal time to de-stress reduces the risk of caregiver burnout. So, if you've always wanted to eat at the local Thai Siri Restaurant or visit Schweikher House Preservation Trust, don't feel bad. Doing so is great for both you and your loved one.

At the end of the day, our goal is to become a valuable part of your senior's daily routine. That way, we may help give them the highest quality of life possible. We know that staying at home is important for your loved one, and we are here to help make sure that is possible.

If you have been on the fence about non-medical home care, there has never been a better time than now to give your senior the care, assistance, and companionship they deserve.

Aging in Place: The Preferred Choice for Most Seniors

While it's true that some seniors have complicated medical needs that prevent them from staying at home, aging in place is often the best arrangement for seniors and their families. With a trusted caregiver, seniors have the opportunity to live with a sense of dignity and do so as they see fit - something that is unavailable to many older people today.

In-home care makes it possible for millions of seniors to age in place every year. Rather than moving to a strange nursing home, seniors have the chance to stay at home where they feel the happiest and most comfortable.

Here are just a few of the reasons why older men and women prefer to age at home:

How much does a senior's home truly mean to them?

A study published by the American Society on Aging found that more than half of seniors say their home's emotional value means more than how much their home is worth in monetary value. It stands to reason, then, that a senior's home is where they want to grow old.

With the help of elderly care in Streamwood, IL, seniors don't have to age in a sterilized care facility. Instead, they can age gracefully in the place they want to be most: their home. In contrast, seniors who move to a long-term care facility must adapt to new environments, new people, and new systems that the facility implements. At this stage in life, this kind of drastic change can be more harmful than helpful.

Institutional care facilities like nursing homes often put large groups of people together to live in one location. On any given day, dozens of staff members and caregivers run in and out of these facilities. Being around so many new people in a relatively small living environment can be dangerous for a seniors' health and wellbeing. When you consider that thousands of seniors passed away in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, opting for in-home care is often a safer, healthier choice for seniors.

Aging in place has been shown to improve seniors' quality of life, which helps boost physical health and also helps insulate them from viral and bacterial risks found in elderly living facilities.

For many seniors, the ability to live independently with assistance from a caregiver is a priceless option. With in-home care, seniors experience a higher level of independence and freedom - much more so than in other settings like a nursing home. When a senior has the chance to age in place, they get to live life on their own terms, inside the house that they helped make into a home. More independence means more control over their personal lives, too, which leads to increased levels of fulfillment, happiness, and personal gratification. Over time, these positive feelings can manifest into a healthier, longer life.

More independence, a healthier life, and increased comfort are only a few benefits of aging in place. You have to take into consideration the role of cost and convenience. Simply put, it's usually easier and more affordable to help seniors age in place than it is to move them into an institutional care facility. According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, seniors who age in the comfort of their homes can save thousands of dollars per month.

In-home care services from Always Best Care, for instance, are often less expensive than long-term solutions, which can cost upwards of six figures per year. To make matters worse, many residential care facilities are reluctant to accept long-term care insurance and other types of payment assistance.

With Always Best Care's home care services, seniors and their families have a greater level of control over their care plans. In-home care gives seniors the chance to form a bond with a trusted caregiver and also receive unmatched care that is catered to their needs. In long-term care facilities, seniors and their loved ones have much less control over their care plan and have less of a say in who provides their care.

Home Care Streamwood, IL

Affordable Care

In-home care is a valuable resource that empowers seniors to age in place on their own terms. However, a big concern for many families and their loved ones is how much in-home care costs. If you're worried that in-home care is too expensive, you may be pleasantly surprised to learn that it is one of the most affordable senior care arrangements available.

Typically, hiring an Always Best Care in-home caregiver for a few hours a week is more affordable than sending your loved one to a long-term care facility. This is true even for seniors with more complex care needs.

At Always Best Care, we will work closely with you and your family to develop a Care Plan that not only meets your care needs, but your budget requirements, too. Once we discover the level of care that you or your senior need, we develop an in-home care plan that you can afford.

In addition to our flexible care options, families should also consider the following resources to help offset potential home care costs:

If your loved one qualifies, Medicaid may help reduce in-home care costs. Review your IL's Medicaid program laws and benefits, and make sure your senior's financial and medical needs meet Medicaid eligibility requirements.
Attendance and aid benefits through military service can cover a portion of the costs associated with in-home care for veterans and their spouses.
Many senior care services like in-home care are included in long-term care insurance options. Research different long-term care solutions to find a plan that provides coverage for senior care.
Home care can be included as part of a senior's private insurance plan. Read over your loved one's insurance policy carefully or speak with their insurance provider to determine if in-home care is covered.
Depending on the life insurance plan, you may be able to apply your policy toward long-term care. You may be able to use long-term-care coverage to help pay for in-home elderly care.
Home Care Streamwood, IL

Compassionate Care. Trusted Caregivers.

When you or your senior loved one needs assistance managing daily tasks at home, finding a qualified caregiver can be challenging. It takes a special kind of person to provide reliable care for your senior loved one. However, a caregiver's role involves more than meal preparation and medication reminders. Many seniors rely on their caregivers for companionship, too.

Our companion care services give seniors the chance to socialize in a safe environment and engage in activities at home. These important efforts boost morale and provide much-needed relief from repetitive daily routines. A one-on-one, engaging conversation can sharpen seniors' minds and give them something in which to be excited.

At Always Best Care, we only hire care providers that we would trust to care for our own loved ones. Our senior caregivers in Streamwood, IL understand how important it is to listen and communicate with their seniors. A seemingly small interaction, like a short hug goodbye, can make a major difference in a senior's day. Instead of battling against feelings of isolation, seniors begin to look forward to seeing their caregiver each week.

Understanding the nuances of senior care is just one of the reasons why our care providers are so great at their job.

Unlike some senior care companies, our caregivers must undergo extensive training before they work for Always Best Care. In addition, our caregivers receive ongoing training throughout the year. This training ensures that their standard of care matches up to the high standards we've come to expect. During this training, they will brush up on their communication skills, safety awareness, and symptom spotting. That way, your loved one receives the highest level of non-medical home care from day one.

Assisted Living Referral Services

While it's true that many seniors prefer to age at home, sometimes in-home care isn't the best fit. For those seniors and their families, choosing an assisted living facility makes more sense. Unfortunately, finding the optimal care facility is easier said than done in today's day and age. That's when Always Best Care's assisted living referral services begin to make a lot of sense.

Assisted living is a form of housing intended for seniors who require varying degrees of medical and personal attention. Accommodations may include single rooms, apartments, or shared living arrangements. Assisted living communities are typically designed to resemble a home-like environment and are physically constructed to encourage the independence of residents.

Home Care Streamwood, IL

At assisted living communities, seniors receive help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and eating. They may also benefit from coordination of services with outside healthcare providers, and monitoring of resident activities to ensure their health, safety, and well-being. Caregivers who work at assisted living communities can also provide medication administration and personal care services for older adults.

Other services offered within assisted living communities can include some or all of the following:

  • Housekeeping
  • Laundry
  • Recreational Activities
  • Social Outings
  • Emergency Medical Response
  • Medication Monitoring
  • Family Visitation
  • Personal Care
Home Care Streamwood, IL

At Always Best Care, our representatives can match your senior's emotional, physical, and financial needs with viable assisted living communities nearby. Results are based on comparative data, so you can select the best choice for you or your loved one.

Always Best Care works closely with local senior living communities to gain valuable knowledge that we then use to help seniors and their loved ones make informed decisions. This information can include basic care and rent, resident availability, and services provided. Because Always Best Care is compensated by these communities, we provide senior living referral services at no extra cost to you.

Some of the most popular assisted living communities to consider in our area include the following:

  • Westbrook Senior Living

STREAMWOOD, IL — Alyssa Konkel figures that everyone has to be known for something in life. But when it comes to finding her own 15 minutes of fame, Konkel decided to go big or go home — even if it meant exposing herself to the world.

The 26-year-old Streamwood resident has become an overnight social media sensation, all thanks to a video she posted of a treadmill mishap caught on her gym’s security camera. The video shows Konkel running on the treadmill during a morning workout at her Schaumburg gym. That's when things took a turn for the worse and when Konkel lost her footing before unexpectedly —and quite literally — her pants.

The video, which Konkel posted initially on Instagram, has since gotten more than 6 million views across the world since she posted it on May 24. Although most people wouldn’t want such a moment out there for all to see, Konkel told Patch that she decided to share her embarrassment as a way of making the world a happier place.

“I wanted to make the world laugh,” Konkel told Patch on Wednesday. “Everyone’s just so down and people don’t look at the brighter side of things.”

She added: “I was just thinking, a lot of people post funny, stupid videos ….and so I posted my video and thought, let’s see where this goes and see how far I can take it.”

Find out what's happening in Arlington Heightswith free, real-time updates from Patch.

Konkel’s recent treadmill slip wasn't, surprisingly, her first. Ten years ago, while running on a treadmill set to level 10, just as she was last month, Konkel was thrown off the treadmill, causing her to hit her chin on the way down. This time, Konkel said she noticed her shoe was untied but kept running when she again slipped.

The video shows her trying to catch herself before losing her balance and then her pants in the middle of a crowded gym. Konkel said that most of the people running on treadmills were facing away from her when her mishap took place. Konkel says that after slipping, she pulled her pants up as quickly as possible and looked both ways before realizing what had happened.

“Thankfully, not that many people saw my butt,” she said. “Now, everyone has seen my butt.”

Konkel said that another person who witnessed the mishap did come to check on her to make sure she was OK. Outside of treadmill burns to her face, knees and legs and a heavy dose of embarrassment, Konkel was fine after the fall.

She asked her gym for video footage of the incident, a request that caught gym staff off-guard, and allowed others to view a moment that has now been seen around the world.

Konkel said she told her parents about the ordeal, aware that she was going to post the video on social media. She says that people have recognized her and that her work colleagues have called her famous given the number of times the video has been viewed on YouTube and on other platforms.

She said that every time she has walked into a store or other public place, she is just waiting for someone to recognize her as “the treadmill girl.”

Konkel admits she has not returned to the gym since her viral run but says that she may stick to walking on the treadmill to avoid another trip-up. Whether she returns to the gym where it happened remains unknown, given Konkel’s new-found notoriety. The gym, which Konkel prefers not to make public, offered her a free drink and a meal as a way of celebrating that she was not injured in her treadmill tumble.

Konkel can’t help but laugh at herself when she sees the video, which has made its way to places as far away as Sweden, Germany and Australia. She is glad that her misfortune has indeed made people smile, while bringing Konkel much more exposure than she ever imagined it would.

“I feel like it’s just a funny thing, and it’s just a butt,” Konkel told Patch. “A lot of people haven’t been famous because of their butt, and so I guess I’m the first.”

Expansion in Full Swing: Illinois Grocery Chain Unveils New Store Opening

Good news for residents of the Chicago suburb of Streamwood with a new Aldi store opening on Thursday, October 26.

The store will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday, October 26, at 830 a.m. Shoppers can enter sweepstakes for a chance to win a $500 ALDI gift card across the first four days the stores are open. The first 100 shoppers on opening day will receive a free tote bag and a free bag of goodies.

Aldi has its U.S. headquarters in Illinois, so it is no surprise that Illinois has more locations than any other state.

Last month it opened a new store in Barton. The new store will be the second to open in Streamwood and the 214th location in Illinois.

New Aldi Store

Open 9 am to 8 pm seven days a week

About Aldi

Aldi now has over 2,300 stores across 38 states, proving popular with American shoppers. It was recently ranked as the most-trusted discount and small-format grocer on the 2023 Most Trusted Grocery Retailers in America list conducted by market research firm BrandSpark International. Aldi has opened over 1,000 stores over the last decade.

The grocer also recently announced they were cutting the price on over 250 items across its stores nationwide. Aldi has projected the discounts will lead to $60 million in savings for shoppers - which will be appreciated by people struggling with rising inflation.

"We don’t want high grocery prices to get in the way of Americans doing what they love this summer, so we’re taking charge to champion value in a way that only Aldi can. We’re reducing our already low prices on some of the season’s most popular items to make sure summer plans aren’t disrupted...Whether our shoppers are traveling, heading to a game or enjoying time by the pool, we are committed to offering quality food and essentials at the lowest prices possible so they can enjoy life outside the grocery aisle” Dave Rinaldo, co-president at ALDI U.S

The National Weather Service confirmed damaging tornadoes moved through the suburbs and Chicago in the late afternoon and evening Wednesday, with one touching down near O'Hare International Airport and "multiple tornadoes in Kane County."

The weather service office in Romeoville told the Shaw Local News Network it had reports of touchdowns in Lily Lake and South Elgin. Social media users posted images and videos of what appeared to be twin tornadoes in Kane County, west of Elgin and South Elgin in the Campton Hills area.

The tornado by O'Hare was "touching the ground intermittently" about 7 p.m. and moving east, according to a tweet from the weather service, with "additional circulations" south of O'Hare. Cook County had been under a tornado warning after a separate tornado was confirmed by the weather service east of South Elgin, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

OMFG THIS IS THE BEST THING EVER. Plato Township, IL.

— Jordan S ?? (@Jordan22twt)

Ther> were confirmed tornadoes on the east side of Streamwood and near Hodgkins and Summit just to the north of I-55, ABC 7 meteorologist Cheryl Scott said.

Sirens went off throughout the suburbs, and warnings sounded on televisions and phones. But all warnings ended by about 7:45 p.m., with only a watch remaining in place for some of the area.

In a text message to Shaw, Campton Hills Trustee Timothy Morgan said a tornado touched down at Burlington and Dittman roads, but there was no damage. Campton Township Road Commissioner Sam Gallucci said a tornado touched down at Bowes and Nesler roads in Elgin and caused damage.

Images of large fallen trees in Campton Hills and the Elgin area, with some damage to houses, appeared in social media posts and residents' photos.

In Huntley, two apartment buildings were badly damaged, with one losing its roof, ABC 7 reported. Eight families were displaced, but officials said no injuries were reported.

Huntley Battalion Chief Mike Pierce told ABC 7 that firefighters and other emergency services were responding to downed power lines, trees and tree branches, and power outages had been reported.

ABC 7 also reported wind damage in Aurora.

Video from TV stations showed hundreds of people taking shelter in an O'Hare concourse, The Associated Press reported. Some 169 flights were canceled and nearly 500 were delayed, according to the flight tracking service FlightAware.

Flights were grounded at Midway International Airport and O'Hare International Airport from 5 to 7:15 p.m., the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

The South and Southwest suburbs saw heavy rain, with 2.63 inches reported in Romeoville, weather service meteorologist Jake Petr told the Chicago Sun-Times.

The National Weather Service issued two tornado warnings Wednesday evening for portions of Chicago proper. Tornado sirens sounded at least twice, warning people to take cover and ringing through the city's buildings, the AP reported.

Lynn Becker, a longtime Chicago resident, posted video to Twitter with the sirens sounding out across the city's iconic skyline.

"I'm in a 60-story apartment building so my options are somewhat limited," he said. "We have to, I assume, go into the core of the building."

A tornado watch was in place for DeKalb, DuPage, Grundy, Kane, Kankakee, La Salle, McHenry and Will counties until 10 p.m. A tornado watch means a tornado is possible; it is less severe than a tornado warning, which indicates that a tornado has been seen or is expected by the weather service.

In the event of a tornado warning, residents should move to a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building and to avoid windows. If you are outdoors, in a mobile home or in a vehicle, move to the closest substantial shelter and protect yourself from flying debris.

Many tornadoes have struck in the Chicago area, and several have hit within the city limits of Chicago, according to the National Weather Service. From 1855 to 2021, the weather service recorded 97 significant tornadoes in the metro area.

The deadliest formed in Palos Hills on April 21, 1967. The twister traveled 16 miles through Oak Lawn and the South Side of Chicago, killing 33 people and injuring 500.

Another Cyclospora outbreak from Fresh Express’s Illinois processing facility

For the second time in as many years, the Fresh Express processing plant in Streamwood, IL, is implicated in a Cyclospora outbreak. Two years ago, the Food and Drug Administration confirmed the presence of the Cyclospora parasite in a lettuce and carrot mix distributed to McDonald’s from the Streamwood, IL Fresh Express facility.

The 2018 Cyclospora outbreak infected 511 people in 15 states who reported consuming a variety of salads from McDonald’s restaurants, mostly in the Midwest. Twenty-four people were hospitalized. Epidemiologic and traceback evidence indicated that salads purchased from McDonald’s restaurants were a likely source of the 2018 outbreak.

On June 27 this year, in a “precautionary recall,” Fresh Express acknowledged that its Streamwood, IL, facility is again the source iceberg lettuce, red cabbage, and carrot products now being recalled for “potential Cyclospora risk.” In the U.S. and Canada, this current Cyclospora outbreak has sickened at least 546 and hospitalized 34, respectively.

The FDA’s inspection reportedly continues at the Fresh Express production facility in Streamwood, IL.

The Fresh Express recall of the Streamwood, IL, products was followed by a reported spike in the number of confirmed cases in the U.S. as the 2020 outbreak is an ongoing event. A 59.5 percent bump increased the laboratory-confirmed Cyclospora infections to 509, an increase of more than 300 in the United States. The other 34 cases are being reported in Canada.

The U.S. cases are currently reported in eight states: Illinois with 151, Iowa 160, Kansas 5, Minnesota 63, Missouri 46. Nebraska 48, North Dakota 6, and Wisconsin 30.

Illnesses started on dates ranging from May 11, 2020, to July 1, 2020. Ill people range in age from 11 to 92 years with a median age of 60. Fifty-three percent are female. Of 506 people with available information, 33 people, or 7 percent, have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.

The Public Health Agency of Canada is also investigating the outbreak of Cyclospora infections occurring in three Canadian provinces where exposure to certain Fresh Express brand salad products containing iceberg lettuce, carrots and red cabbage, has been identified as a likely source of the outbreak. Thirty-seven illnesses are reported in Canada.

Epidemiologic and traceback evidence continues to indicate that bagged salad mix containing iceberg lettuce, carrots, and red cabbage produced by Fresh Express is a likely source of this outbreak.

In interviews, ill people answered questions about the foods they ate and other exposures in the two weeks before they became ill. Ill people reported eating a variety of brands of bagged salad mix containing iceberg lettuce, carrots, and red cabbage. Salad mixes eaten by ill people were purchased from Aldi, Hy-Vee, Jewel-Osco, and Walmart stores in the Midwest.

Traceback investigations by FDA suggest that the Streamwood, IL, Fresh Express production facility is the likely producer of the bagged salad mixes eaten by ill people. The FDA has begun an inspection at this facility. The CDC and FDA continue to investigate to determine what ingredient or ingredients in the salad mix was contaminated and whether other products are a source of illnesses.

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) has issued a public health notice regarding an outbreak of Cyclospora infections in Canada, with 37 reported ill in three provinces. Exposure to certain Fresh Express brand salad products containing iceberg lettuce, carrots, and red cabbage, has been identified as a likely source of the outbreak. The Public Health Agency of Canada, Canadian Food Inspection Agency, U.S. FDA, and U.S. CDC are collaborating on these ongoing Cyclospora investigations.

The FDA continues to work with retailers to ensure the potentially adulterated products are effectively removed from the marketplace. As this outbreak investigation continues, the FDA will provide additional updates to this advisory. This is the area, in addition to Canada, that the product was distributed.

See the following press releases for complete details on the recalled products:

What is Cyclospora? Cyclospora is a parasite composed of one cell, too small to be seen without a microscope. The organism was previously thought to be a blue-green alga or a large form of cryptosporidium. Cyclospora cayetanensis is the only species of this organism found in humans.

The first known human cases of illness caused by Cyclospora infection (that is, cyclosporiasis) were first discovered in 1977. An increase in the number of cases being reported began in the mid-1980s, in part due to the availability of better diagnostic techniques.

More than 15,000 cases are estimated to occur in the United States each year. The first recorded Cyclospora outbreak in North America occurred in 1990 and was linked to contaminated water. Since then, several cyclosporiasis outbreaks have been reported in the U.S. and Canada, many associated with eating fresh fruits or vegetables. In some developing countries, cyclosporiasis is common among the population, and travelers to those areas have become infected as well.

Where does Cyclospora come from? Cyclospora is spread when people ingest water or food contaminated with infected stool. For example, exposure to contaminated water among farmworkers may have been the original source of the parasite in raspberry-associated outbreaks in North America. Cyclospora needs time, one to several weeks, after being passed in a bowel movement to become infectious. Therefore, it is unlikely that Cyclospora is passed directly from one person to another. It is not known whether or not animals can be infected and pass the infection to people.

What are the typical symptoms of Cyclospora infection? Cyclospora infects the small intestine and usually causes watery diarrhea, bloating, increased gas, stomach cramps, loss of appetite, nausea, low-grade fever, and fatigue. In some cases, vomiting, explosive diarrhea, muscle aches, and substantial weight loss can occur. Some people who are infected with Cyclospora do not have any symptoms. Symptoms generally appear about a week after infection. If not treated, the illness may last from a few days up to six weeks. Symptoms may also recur one or more times. In addition, people who have previously been infected with Cyclospora can become infected again.

What are the serious and long-term risks of Cyclospora infection? Cyclospora has been associated with a variety of chronic complications such as Guillain-Barre syndrome, reactive arthritis or Reiter’s syndrome, biliary disease, and acalculous cholecystitis. Since Cyclospora infections tend to respond to the appropriate treatment, complications are more likely to occur in individuals who are not treated or not treated promptly. Extraintestinal infection also appears to occur more commonly in individuals with a compromised immune system.

How is Cyclospora infection detected? Your health care provider may ask you to submit a stool specimen for analysis. Because testing for Cyclospora infection can be difficult, you may be asked to submit several stool specimens over several days. The identification of this parasite in stool requires special laboratory tests that are not routinely done. Therefore, your health care provider should specifically request testing for Cyclospora if it is suspected. Your health care provider might have your stool checked for other organisms that can cause similar symptoms.

How is Cyclospora infection treated? The recommended treatment for infection with Cyclospora is a combination of two antibiotics, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, also known as Bactrim, Septra, or Cotrim. People who have diarrhea should rest and drink plenty of fluids. No alternative drugs have been identified yet for people with Cyclospora infection who are unable to take sulfa drugs. Some experimental studies, however, have suggested that ciprofloxacin or nitazoxanide may be effective, although to a lesser degree than trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. See your health care provider discuss alternative treatment options.

How can Cyclospora infection be prevented? Avoiding water or food that may be contaminated is advisable when traveling. Drinking bottled or boiled water and avoiding fresh ready-to-eat produce should help to reduce the risk of infection in regions with high rates of infection. Improving sanitary conditions in developing regions with poor environmental and economic conditions is likely to help to reduce exposure. Washing fresh fruits and vegetables at home may help to remove some of the organisms, but Cyclospora may remain on produce even after washing.
