ELMHURST, IL – Like schools everywhere, the Elmhurst district has seen improvements in attendance since the pandemic.
The district reports that attendance in elementary schools is better now than before the pandemic.
At Tuesday's school board meeting, officials highlighted the improvement at Churchville Middle School.
As of last school year, 91 percent of Churchville's students showed up more than 90 percent of the time. That's up from 72 percent six years ago.
Churchville is now 1 percentage point below the average for the district's three middle schools.
More than 40 percent of Churchville's students come from low-income families, compared with about 6 percent at Sandburg and Bryan middle schools.
One way to improve attendance, Churchville's principal said, is reviewing incoming students' fifth-grade attendance records. Administrators identify students who are absent at least 15 percent of the time.
"For these students and families, we send a personalized welcome mailing that includes information about locker day, an introduction to our counselor and details that make the transition familiar and manageable," Principal Gina Reeder said. "We also handed a small welcome bag with Churchville spirit wear and school supplies."
The second strategy, she said, was connecting a student with a "preferred" adult, who checks in and offers encouragement.
"The goal is for students to know that somebody will notice when they are absent, welcome them back when they return, and help them through whatever may be making attendance difficult," Reeder said.

ELMHURST, IL – Superintendent Keisha Campbell was the highest-paid employee in Elmhurst School District 205 for the 2025-26 year. She made $313,234, a nearly 3 percent hike from a year earlier.
Second was Kevin Rubenstein, assistant superintendent of student services, making $208,338.
The highest-paid teacher was Todd Grikmanis, who teaches PE at Churchville Middle School. He was 10th on the list, at $189,324, moving up from 11th.
The district released its compensation list late last week.

ELMHURST, IL – A developer expressed concerns to Elmhurst officials before withdrawing from a downtown theater project earlier this year.
In March, Minneapolis-based Ryan Companies withdrew from its partnership with the board for the Encore Center for Performing Arts.
Encore hopes to build a 550-seat theater and a 185-unit apartment building in the 100 block of West First Street.
In a March 2025 email, Ryan executive Olga Olejniczak told city officials that she had spoken with the Encore group about the project's rising costs and design concerns.
"We also discussed the need to align on a PR strategy and advised that they will need to provide fundraising transparency moving forward," Olejniczak said.
As part of the project, Encore plans to seek money through a downtown special tax increment financing district, or TIF. City officials, including Mayor Scott Levin, have expressed openness to the idea.
At the time, Olejniczak said her company had planned to turn in a TIF application within two to three months.
'Not been favorable'
In a June interview, Mark George, Encore's president, said Ryan could not reach an agreement with the city on the money it could receive from the tax district.
Such a district is where growth in property tax income over 23 years is reinvested in the district itself.
The idea is that the increased tax income would reimburse the district for subsidies.
In a September 2025 email to the city, Olejniczak cited "real" budget constraints and the city's "inability to capture increment beyond our parcel."
She said the only viable option would be to find an equity partner willing to accept a lower return.
"Our capital markets team has been reaching out to potential investors, but initial feedback has unfortunately not been favorable," Olejniczak said.
She said her company had warned Encore that it may terminate their agreement if it cannot find a "financially feasible" path forward.
"(W)e cannot justify further pursuit costs without clarity on a workable TIF strategy," Olejniczak said.
'A lot of listening'
In a recent email, George, who started in the spring as Encore's president, said his group's new development partner has been "extraordinarily receptive" as Encore has shared residents' feedback. He did not name the partner.
"For the past several months, EPCA has done a lot of listening," George said. "The feedback we have received has been helpful and made us even more excited about our goal, to create a premier cultural destination that attracts world-class artists, expands access to the performing arts, and fuels economic vitality in our community."
In response to an inquiry, the city's spokesperson, Michael Queroz, referred Patch to a page on its website about tax districts.
On that page, Mayor Levin wrote a letter endorsing the idea of such districts. The result, he said, is redeveloped areas that make the city more vibrant and more desirable to visit.
Olejniczak did not return a message for comment. Her company is responsible for major Elmhurst projects, including the Vyne on Haven apartment complex.
Resident objections
According to Encore's study, the project's yearly economic impact would be $8.2 million. The center is expected to bring $692,000 a year in taxes on sales, food, beverages and hotels. Of that, $202,000 would directly benefit the city of Elmhurst, the study said.

ELMHURST, IL – A group pushing a performing arts center and big apartment complex in downtown Elmhurst is planning to present its concept to city officials later this summer.
In the spring, the Encore Center for Performing Arts named Mark George as its president. He is the former longtime president and CEO of the Music Institute of Chicago.
Encore hopes to build a 550-seat theater and a 185-unit apartment building in the 100 block of West First Street.
Previously, the group teamed up with Minneapolis-based Ryan Companies, which has built other buildings in Elmhurst, including the Vyne on Haven apartment complex.
However, in an interview Monday, George said Ryan backed out of the project in March. The developer could not reach an agreement with the city on the money it could receive from the downtown tax increment financing district, or TIF, he said.
After that, developers lined up for the project, George said. A couple of weeks ago, he said, a company signed a letter of intent with Encore.
At this point, George said he was not at liberty to identify the developer.
George said he expected the apartment complex to be four to six stories.
The project would mean the demolition of existing buildings on much of the block.
Teaming up with a developer, George said, makes the project economically possible. Without the partnership, the nonprofit group must raise $60 million, as opposed to about $25 million, he said.
"It's in the best interest of the developer to have a nonprofit as an anchor for the project," George said. "There truly is a community interest. Developers are happy to work with us."
As for financing, Mayor Scott Levin said in his 2025 campaign that money from the special tax district would be appropriate. He said the theater would be a "boon" for Elmhurst's economy.

Over the last year, residents have spoken out against the project during City Council meetings. They object to the proliferation of tall downtown apartment buildings, as well as the traffic and related issues.
Encore plans four meetings with residents next month, along with tours of the proposed site.
George said he is willing to sit down and speak with people about their concerns.
"It's not uncommon for people to tell me how much they love Elmhurst," he said. "I want to do a lot of listening."
Encore wants children, seniors and veterans, among other groups, to benefit from the performing arts center's space.
"You can't have a show 365 days a year," he said.
On the schedule
Encore Center for Performing Arts plans community meetings on its plan at 5 p.m. July 8, 10 a.m. July 9, 5 p.m. July 21 and 10 a.m. July 22.
Participants will meet on the north side of the Metra platform outside of Pilot Pete's at 128 W. First St. (In case of bad weather, check social media for updates.)
They will take a walking tour of the proposed site. Evening events will include a beverage at Tannins Wine Bar & Boutique, while morning excursions will feature a pre-walk beverage from Pilot Pete's.
