HOMEWOOD, IL — An EF-1 tornado touched down in Homewood Monday, the National Weather Service said late Tuesday.
NWS also reported that a tornado impacted Country Club Hills, Hazel Crest, and Harvey. Damage reflecting an EF-1 tornado was found in Hazel Crest, NWS said, and given the complexity of its track, they are still finalizing details.
The agency also confirmed an EF-1 tornado in Lansing, and an EF-0 tornado in Orland Park. In Downers Grove and Carol Stream, powerful straight-line winds were confirmed.
On Tuesday, the Village of Homewood praised its residents for their response to Monday's chaotic weather.
"Yesterday reminded us exactly what makes Homewood special," the Village said in a release. "In the moments immediately following this unprecedented and damaging storm, it was encouraging to see neighbors stepping up and helping one another. We saw residents, in quiet unison, cutting trees and moving them to the parkway. We also saw residents at Home Depot purchasing multiple chainsaws to share with neighbors on their block. In times of catastrophe and uncertainty, it’s the strength and resilience of our community that shines the brightest, and yesterday was an incredible example of what it means to be a good neighbor in Homewood."
Homewood Public Works crews and contractors moved as quickly as possible Tuesday to assess damage and clear large trees from streets and roadways, the Village said.
"Because of the large-scale impact of the storm, cleanup will take time," the Village said. "Please be patient."
Cook County's Department of Emergency Management and Regional Security (EMRS) and the City of Chicago's Office of Emergency Management and Communications (OEMC) are reviewing damage from the severe thunderstorms and tornadoes that occurred July 27, and asking that residents who have been impacted by these storms submit an initial damage assessment. A survey is available online and must be completed by August 5.

Homewood and Flossmoor were hit with a strong storm producing tornado-level winds just before 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11.
Flossmoor Mayor Michelle Nelson and Homewood Mayor Rich Hofeld each declared emergencies.
The National Weather Service is still analyzing damage and hasn’t confirmed that a tornado hit the villages, but it did confirm two EF-1 tornadoes in the area, one near the border between Cook County and Will County and one in eastern Will County.
There were reports of wind speeds throughout the region reaching nearly 100 mph, enough to cause significant tree and structure damage and widespread power outages.
The storm arrived two weeks and a day after another major storm hit the villages, sending a tornado through part of Homewood. The Old Homewood neighborhood bore the brunt of that storm. On Tuesday, the area south of 183rd Street to Holbrook Road and east of the railroad tracks was hit hardest, according to Homewood Public Works Director Josh Burman.
In Flossmoor, damage was widespread, but areas of Flossmoor Hills, Old Flossmoor and Flossmoor Park appeared to have been hit the hardest. Several streets in Old Flossmoor and Flossmoor Park were partially or completely blocked by downed trees and power lines.
Homewood also had a number of blocked streets. Both villages urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel. Not only were blocked streets a problem but most stop lights in Homewood were not operating or were set to flashing red, slowing travel through major intersections.
At one point, all three viaducts in H-F were closed to travel because of flooding and, in the case of the 183rd Street viaduct, two stalled cars.
Flossmoor officials reported that most streets, except several in the southeast portion of the village, were cleared by evening.
The majority of residents in both villages were without power Tuesday afternoon. Homewood officials estimated outages affected nearly 70% of the village at one point.
ComEd expects to restore 80% of current outages by noon on Aug. 13 and 99% by 11 p.m. on Aug. 15. Shortly after 9 p.m. ComEd reported 3,717 outages in the region affecting 181,530 customers. That was down from 4,441 outages affecting 234,651 customers shortly before 5 p.m.

While the size and scope of storm damage can affect how quickly insurance companies process claims, some policyholders say they are left waiting for answers as they try to determine whether to pay for repairs themselves or continue waiting for guidance from their insurance carriers.
Jessica Lopez of Homewood said ongoing storm damage has disrupted her family's summer.
"It has not been a summer. You know, kids are depressed, trying to manage, trying to keep the house as salvageable as possible, to find out what insurance is going to do, and at the same time, try fixing what you can on your own."
Lopez said she already had an insurance claim stemming from severe storms on July 3. According to Lopez, power outages damaged her air conditioning unit and sump pumps, leading to water damage and mold growth.
As she worked to address those issues, another storm on Aug. 11 caused additional damage. Lopez said tree damage left her yard in disarray, windows were damaged and her roof began leaking.
She said the wait for an insurance assessment has added to her frustration.
"My assessor is not scheduled to come out until September 1st. So that is a long period of wait. Until then, what do you do?"
Lopez said she has spoken with multiple contractors, obtained estimates and contacted her insurance company but still lacks clear direction on how to proceed.
Some homeowners turn to public adjusters to advocate on their behalf during the claims process.

Ryan Ward of Guru Claims Services said insufficient sump pump coverage is a common issue he sees among homeowners.
"Basements. The biggest thing I'm doing right now. I went to two clients today. They don't have enough sump pump coverage or no sump pump coverage at all."
Public adjusters typically receive a percentage of an eventual insurance payout, but supporters say they can help ensure insurance companies comply with policy terms.
Other homeowners may be unsure whether to file a claim at all. Michael Balarezo, CEO of Adjusto, encouraged homeowners to gather information before making decisions.
"There's nothing stopping folks from getting an estimate from a contractor or a specialist who does this sort of remediation work for the type of damage that you have, and I urge folks to get at least three different estimates."
Insurance experts said obtaining multiple estimates can help homeowners make more informed decisions about repairs and claims.
For some policyholders who pursue insurance claims, weeks or even months may pass before the process is resolved, leaving them questioning the value of their coverage.
Lopez said the delays have been difficult.
"It hurts because you know you pay your bills on time. You make sure your home is protected because you put value into your home. You work hard for what you have, and you want it to last."
Experts said one of the biggest mistakes policyholders make is not fully understanding what their insurance policies cover. They also said homeowners who believe they have a legitimate claim should not avoid filing solely out of concern that their insurance rates could increase, noting that rates may increase regardless of whether a claim is filed.

HOMEWOOD, Ill. (WLS) -- A south suburban woman says her veteran benefits were stopped for a year and a half despite her family's efforts to provide documentation to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. After the family contacted the I-Team, they say the benefits have been restored and they have received back pay.
Mary Lou Heinberg, a 92-year-old Homewood resident, said she depends on veteran benefits to help cover medical assistance and other expenses at her assisted living facility in nearby Olympia Fields. Her late husband served eight years in the U.S. Army, making her eligible for benefits.
Asked how the situation had affected her, Heinberg said, "Very upset, truthfully. I mean, my nerves. Sometimes I think they're waiting for me to die. Really? I'm 92!"
She also described the financial strain she was experiencing.
"It's very depressing, to be perfectly truthful. I'm especially with groceries going up, medicine is going up. So, I really have to limit myself to what I do," Heinberg said.
According to the family, Heinberg had received VA benefits for years and continued receiving them after moving to a new facility in 2022. However, the payments stopped in January 2025. The family said the VA told them it had not been informed of the move.
Mary Woods disputed that explanation.
"That they're stopping the benefit because she did not notify them that she moved into a new facility," Woods said. "But she did. She did. She faxed them. And I have a copy of fax before she moved in in February of 2022."
The family also said the VA claimed it did not have a medical expense report needed to count the facility as a medical expense, despite reports being completed after the agency requested them.
"They're not telling us that no one, no one will tell us anything. All they will do is send another letter," Woods said.
Despite documentation the family said it had provided, benefits remained suspended. Heinberg said she had gone about 18 months without receiving the roughly $1,500 per month she believed she was owed.
As a result, Woods said she had been helping cover her mother's expenses.
"I'm giving her like $2,000 a month to help her because she's not bringing in enough money to be living there," Woods said.
The family said matters worsened when the VA sent a letter seeking repayment of $50,000 for benefits Heinberg had received while living in the new facility. The VA maintained she should not have been receiving those payments, but the family disagreed.
When asked about the repayment demand, Heinberg said, "Oh, I almost passed out."
Woods added, "I told them they can keep sending letters because she doesn't have the money."
Heinberg said, "I said I don't have any money. How I would pay them $50,000?"
The I-Team contacted the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in Washington, D.C. The department did not provide a statement, but the family said a liaison contacted them within days to investigate the matter.
The family later received documentation showing a new decision and an email stating, "We were able to restart your mother's award..."
The email continued, "She should start receiving her monthly award on or around August 1, 2026."
According to the family, the email also addressed the $50,000 debt, stating, "A chunk of the retroactive payment will wipe out the existing debt."
Consumer Investigator Jason Knowles said, "It looks like we are on the road to a resolution."
Heinberg praised the outcome.
"You're a miracle worker," she said. "Yeah, it's amazing."
She added, "For the length of time you've been involved. It's unbelievable."
Reflecting on the turnaround, Heinberg said, "So, less than 12 hours, and it took me more than 18 months, and still got nowhere."
Knowles replied, "And in 12 hours, we got the job done."
"Right? Hallelujah," Heinberg responded.
The family said they have also received about $28,000 in back pay for benefits that were not provided during the year and a half payments were stopped.
Sens. Tammy Duckworth and Dick Durbin have also been assisting with the case and both say they are available to help other people who are experiencing problems obtaining VA benefits.
The Veterans Benefits Administration said in a statement, ""VA has been working with Ms. Heinberg for several weeks to obtain the necessary paperwork and ensure it was filled out properly. We are pleased to have reached this favorable outcome for her."
