FLOSSMOOR, IL — The Village of Flossmoor invites the community to dive into the wonders of nature at OAKtoberfest, set for Saturday, Oct. 4. The Village will offer a full day of celebrating nature, trees and community spirit with activities for all ages.
Start the day at 10 a.m. with an educational tree walk with Village Arborist Dave Becker, beginning in Flossmoor Park (Brassie Avenue and Flossmoor Road). Becker will share his knowledge about the different types of trees in the area, as well as general information on Flossmoor’s tree canopy. From 10 a.m.-1 p.m. in the same park, enjoy interactive workshops and demonstrations focused on sustainable living, organic gardening, native plantings and more, presented by a variety of local and regional partners. Exhibitors will include the Flossmoor Green Commission, Thorn Creek Audubon Society, Urban Canopy, Wild Plum, the Homewood-Flossmoor Park District and the University of Illinois Extension. Children will enjoy nature-themed programming and crafts just for them, plus rock climbing, a bubble performer and facepainting. Possibility Place will sponsor a native plant sale to benefit You Matter 2, and the Flossmoor Public Library will offer a nature stories for youngsters.
As the sun sets, get ready to party at the OAKtoberfest Music Festival, held from 4–9 p.m. in the South Commuter’s Lot (south of Flossmoor Road at Sterling Avenue). Enjoy music spun by DJ Emilio, followed by live performances by ReTurn2Soul and Chicago-based Ring of Music Band & Orchestra. Indulge in food from local vendors and food trucks and sip refreshing beverages — including a special event beer from Flossmoor Station Restaurant & Brewery — under the OAKtoberfest party tent. Fest goers can also gather around a bonfire and catch college football games on outdoor TVs. Participants are being recruited for the Flossmoor Service League Bags Tournament, which will raise funds for the local charities the league supports. Sixteen teams of two will compete in the single-elimination tournament, running from 5-7 p.m. for a chance to earn local prizes.
“I look forward to OAKtoberfest because it showcases the best of Flossmoor, our neighbors, local businesses, and community spirit all coming together to celebrate the fall season,” said Stephanie Wright, Flossmoor’s Community Engagement Manager.
New this year, between the daytime and nighttime happenings, the Flossmoor Public Art Commission will offer a walking sculpture tour of part of the Village’s public art collection. Beginning at 1 p.m. at the trio of William O’Brien sculptures, located at the corner of Brassie Avenue and Flossmoor Road in Flossmoor Park, the tour will include stops at seven sculptures, ending at Indira Johnson’s Ten Thousand Ripples in nearby Leavitt Park. In the evening, the Commission will host a silent auction of plein-air paintings, showing scenes from Flossmoor parks, produced by local artists Susan Frances Johnson, Christine Leone and Carleen O’Connor Rivera.
