The Homewood store will be the first to reopen as a Berkot's, in a timeline laid out for customers.
HOMEWOOD, IL — The Homewood Walt's will be the first to transition to a Berkot's, with a timeline now laid out in a flyer to customers.
Just a month after the announcement that the family-owned grocer would be sold to Mokena-based Berkot's, the change will be official on Tuesday, Oct. 28.
Walt's owners said last month the closing on the sale was expected to take place at the end of October or early November.
The Homewood location is at 2345 183rd St. Another is in Beecher, at 1111 Dixie Highway, one in Crete at 1100 E. Exchange Ave, and a fourth remaining location in Dyer, Indiana, at 1218 Sheffield Ave.
The last day operating as Walt's is set for Sunday, Oct. 26, with hours from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. The store will be closed Monday, Oct. 27, and will reopen as Berkot's Super Foods at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 28.
The Beecher store will be next, with its last day as Walt's set for Oct. 28, closed Oct. 29, and reopening as Berkot's Oct. 30.
In November, the Dyer store will close as Walt's on Nov. 2, reopening as Berkot's on Nov. 4.
The Crete store will close as Walt's on Nov. 4, and reopen as Berkot's on Nov. 6.
Shoppers might notice limited quantities of some perishable items in produce, meat, deli and bakery just prior to each store's transition.
"After 88 years of dedication and hard work, we, as a multigenerational family business, have made the decision to get out of the grocery business," Walt's owners said last month.
Walt's got it start in 1937, with a fruit and vegetable stand in South Holland, Illinois. The company was founded by Walt Lagestee, and has remained family owned and operated.
"Our first location was modest but our dreams were big," the company's website reads. "Some of us referred to that early store as a 'shanty,' but the produce we sold was fresh and delicious. Businesses are rewarded with loyal customers when products are fresh and service is second to none. And we grew. The humble store was expanded to meet the flood of happy customers, and our dreams of success were being fulfilled...."
New owner Berkot's is also a family-owned and operated grocery store chain, with locations in Illinois and Wisconsin. The company was established in 1981 and is led by individuals within the Kotara family, including company president Luke Kotara.
"We are confident that Berkot's, as another family-owned independent grocery chain, will continue to operate these stores with the same family values we have held for all these decades: community involvement, employee family, service and quality at a great savings," the announcement of the sale read.
"We have enjoyed being your neighborhood market of choice," reads a statement from Walt's included on the transition timeline flyer. "Thanks for your support of our efforts to serve you, your families, and your communities."
"We look forward to serving you," reads a statement from Berkot's Super Foods on the same flyer. "Experience the Berkot's difference. Fresh. Friendly. Focused on you."
