WEST FRANKFORT, Ill. (Heartland News) - The West Frankfort Fire Department has a new leader, and he didn’t have to wait long to get his first taste of the job.
Michael Lopina was sworn in as the city’s new fire chief Tuesday night during the West Frankfort City Council meeting.
Lopina brings years of experience from suburban fire departments in northern Illinois. He said he was already familiar with West Frankfort and Southern Illinois through his work teaching for the Illinois Fire Service Institute.
“I’ve been familiar with West Frankfort for many years,” Lopina said. “When the opportunity came up, I put in for it, and I was lucky enough to get the job.”
His first days in the new position have already included time in the field.
Lopina said he responded Monday afternoon to a fire in Benton, giving him an early opportunity to meet Benton’s fire chief and firefighters from other departments in the area.
As he settles into West Frankfort, Lopina said he has been impressed by the department he’s taking over.
“This department is very progressive, very forward-thinking,” Lopina said. “They are very aggressive firefighters. They do a lot of work.”
Lopina said his goal is to support firefighters and make sure they have what they need to continue moving the department forward.
He also pointed to firefighters’ involvement outside of emergency calls, saying department members spend their own time participating in community events and supporting local programs.
“I cannot speak highly enough of the personnel in this department and how motivated they are and how much they care about the citizens in town,” Lopina said.
Lopina is currently living in the area by himself while looking for a permanent home. He said his wife and their two dogs will join him in Southern Illinois once they find a place.

FRANKFORT, IL — After an initial announcement on Wednesday that it had to vacate the building, Cache Creek Rescue updated on its Facebook page that it would be allowed to stay operating within Alsip Home & Nursery.
Cache Creek Rescue has been operating within Alsip Home & Nursery for the past nine years.
An original announcement from both businesses on Wednesday shared that the animal rescue would vacate the nursery building. In the original post, Cache Creek said it was "truly heartbroken" by the decision and called the news "devastating."
The Facebook post on Alsip Home & Nursery's page received 200 comments, with a majority expressing disappointment over the business' decision to have the animal rescue vacate the building.
Within a few hours, both businesses had posted that the animal rescue would be allowed to stay.
"We have decided to let Cache Creek Animal Rescue stay and will be negotiating a lease renewal with them in the very near future," Alsip Nursery said.
"While we were very disappointed at the prospect of moving we do want to note that we have been very happy and well treated for the 9 [years] we’ve been at Alsip," Cache Creek posted on its Facebook. "The space we were given at the rate we have would never have been possible somewhere else. That is one of the reason we are so worried."
On Wednesday, Alsip Home & Nursery also announced that it was shifting some of its pet offerings. The business will no longer offer small animal sales (like birds, reptiles and fish).
The business will still offer pet supplies, including feeder animals. It will also continue its Animal Ambassadors.
However, the Groomingdales Pet Salon at Alsip Nursery in Frankfort will close. The pet salon will remain open at the St. John, Indiana, location only.

FRANKFORT, IL — A home was destroyed by fire in Frankfort during severe storms on Tuesday, but the occupants were able to escape the blaze, the Frankfort Fire Protection District said.
The fire district said it was called to Rosewood Court at 10:48 a.m. Tuesday for a report of downed wires "arcing" at that location. While fire crews were responding, dispatch told responders that the home was on fire.
Engine 72 arrived and found heavy fire showing from a two-story wood-frame home. The Fire District said the occupants of the home had evacuated before crews arrived. No one was injured during this incident.
Frankfort Fire responded, as well as mutual aid from Mokena and New Lenox, the Fire District said.
As of 2:45 p.m. Tuesday, crews are still on the scene. The home is a total loss, the Fire District said. The cause and origin of the fire is under investigation.
The Fire District said severe storms moved through the area on Tuesday and generated 51 calls for service, including for downed and arcing power lines, downed trees, alarm activations, EMS responds and reports of structural damage.
"Because of the volume of simultaneous calls and the working structure fire, the Frankfort Fire Protection District requested an inter-divisional box alarm through MABAS Division 19," the fire district said. "Companies from MABAS Division 7 (Kankakee County) responded to cover the district and assist with storm-related calls."

FRANKFORT, IL — Frankfort resident Varun Paluri finished his 13-year journey at Morgan Park Academy, graduating as salutatorian of his class, the school shared in a news release.
This fall, Paluri will attend Northwestern University, where he plans to study biology on a pre-med track, the school said.
Paluri was recognized as salutatorian "after consistently demonstrating intellectual curiosity, determination, and a commitment to personal growth throughout his school career," the school said.
Paluri served as an officer in the school’s Business Professionals of America chapter, and he helped launch the student-run BPA Coffee Corner, working with fellow student leaders to develop the business plan, organize daily operations, and build a successful campus business that now supports other student activities, according to the news release.
Paluri was also on the basketball and baseball teams at the school. He was named All-Conference in both sports and graduated with the Dan Naklicki Award as the best male athlete in the senior class, the school said.
"Varun has been at Morgan Park Academy since kindergarten and has grown and matured into an excellent student, leader, and person," said English teacher Meg Carey. "He has made the most of his time at MPA. He and his fellow BPA officers provided great leadership in planning, developing, and executing our student-run business, the Coffee Corner, to a great measure of success. Varun has a keen mind and a sharp wit. I don't doubt that he will come up with good answers for whatever lies ahead."
