Jake Herhuth has battled leukemia for more than a year. Members of the Columbia Station community have rallied together to support his family.
COLUMBIA STATION, Ohio — A spring day in Northeast Ohio means moving mulch for Mark Zietlow.
For 20 years, Zietlow has committed to his beard. "There's no amount of money that will make me cut my beard off," he says.
However, his wife Sarah is a teacher. One of her former students, Jake Herhuth, is in Columbus battling leukemia. That battle is happening more than 100 miles away from his Columbia Station home.
"He is really sick right now," says Jake's mother Gina Herhuth.
The 15-year-old Jake was diagnosed with AML, a specific type of leukemia, more than a year ago. Gina has been with him for the last seven months in Columbus, where they have been given the best news -- and the worst.
Jake's sister was a perfect match for a bone marrow transplant. But nearly 100 days after the transplant, Jake's doctor gave his family a difficult update.
"There was 80% leukemia in his bone marrow. I never expected that," Gina says. "I mean we heard from the beginning that she's a perfect match."
In the last few days, nearly $3,000 has been raised for the Herhuth family, thanks to Mark Zietlow's commitment to cut off his beard.
"To know that he doesn't know Jake at all and that he said, 'I want to do this for him' and for our family, it's just beyond words," Gina adds.

Some residents living in Columbia Station are concerned about an outdoor gun range, they believe could be creating a safety issue.Residents said the gun range, located on Station Road and owned by Brian Lanckiewicz, is situated on a vacant six-acre parcel that is zoned residential.Neighbor Phil Rozzi said he's worried the constant open shooting at the property could threaten the safety of homes in the area."It happened in Eaton Township, bullets have come through people's houses, just in the last three months,"...
Some residents living in Columbia Station are concerned about an outdoor gun range, they believe could be creating a safety issue.
Residents said the gun range, located on Station Road and owned by Brian Lanckiewicz, is situated on a vacant six-acre parcel that is zoned residential.
Neighbor Phil Rozzi said he's worried the constant open shooting at the property could threaten the safety of homes in the area.
"It happened in Eaton Township, bullets have come through people's houses, just in the last three months," Rozzi said. "It's a risky situation, it's not good. Common sense tells you, you don't do this in a residential area, you just don't."
Rozzi said some 400 new homes have been built in Columbia Township over the past few years, causing the population to swell to more than 7,000.
He thinks Ohio law allowing open shooting in growing townships needs to be re-examined.
John Chomoa, a former Columbia Township zoning inspector, lives across the street from the outdoor gun range.
Chomoa thinks current township usage regulations on parcels zoned residential, but remain vacant, won't allow a gun range on the property.
"There's no building, no one is living there," he said. "It's basically a gun range. Somebody has to get out there and really take charge and say 'hey what's good for our community,' you know, use a little common sense."
But so far, Columbia Township Trustees side with Lanckiewicz, and told News 5 the Ohio Revised Code supersedes township regulations in this case.
Lanckiewicz allowed News 5 onto his property, outlining the safety precautions he's taken, showing us the extensive backstop mound he built to ensure bullets stay on his property.
He has held a meeting with all concerned parties about the gun range six weeks ago and is confident he is operating within the law and all safety guidelines.
"I want people to see that we're not just shooting into the woods," Lanckiewicz said, and, "I will continue to communicate with all my neighbors to see what can be done to make everyone comfortable with what is going on here."
"I will even call my neighbor across the street to let him know when we will be shooting," he added.
Still, Rozzi is asking trustees to review their ruling.
"I don't care how good the range is, it's an exterior range built on a residential piece of property," Rozzi said.

OLMSTED FALLS, Ohio — There aren't many ingredients that go into making Muntaha Dari’s homemade hummus, but there is a lot of love, effort and hard work.
“People think, okay, what's so hard about making hummus but it's actually a lot of work. It's a lot of preparation, a lot of time consuming,” said Dari, founder of Mama Mary's Hummus. “I truly believe love is a big part of cooking. And when you cook and you put your heart in it it's gonna show, it's gonna show in the taste of the food.”
Muntaha Dari is better known throughout northeast Ohio as Mama Mary. She’s from Palestine. Her family bought the Mobil gas station on Columbia Road in Olmsted Falls about 10 years ago. Day by day, they’ve turned it into a staple in the community.
“It's like a small family shop. You know, I don't even consider it a gas station. It's a small family, you know, deli,” said Dari. "Gas is the extra perk. We don't even rely on the gas, we rely on the hummus and the food that we sell in here.”
Dari is famous for her hummus. It’s widely known as gas station hummus, but many consider it gourmet. It was voted best hummus in northeast Ohio in 2018 by Cleveland Magazine and brings in customers from all over the state.
“Any chance that I come up this way I load up,” said Nichole McCluggage, a customer. “I've lived in New York, North, South Carolina, all over Florida, all over Ohio and this is the best hummus I've ever had.”
But the queen of hummus doesn't even like hummus herself. Dari said she started making the food because of the love she has for her Palestinian roots.
“I know how I like hummus if I was a fan of hummus. I know how it should taste and I know how I want it to taste. So I make it, if it's good enough for me and my family, it's good enough for the customers and their families,” said Dari. “It’s a staple in Palestine and a staple in the Middle East and that's why I love to share our food, I love to share our culture.”
Dari makes more than 13 different flavors of hummus including traditional, cranberry, garlic, jalapeno, everything bagel, pickle, spicy, roasted red pepper, sundried tomato and feta, kalamata olive, vegan buffalo, buffalo chicken and a few seasonal flavors like pomegranate and chocolate. She doesn’t use preservatives and only uses natural ingredients.
Mama Mary’s Hummus has been around since 2014. She credits the Facebook group NEO Foodies to making her well-known throughout northeast Ohio and said her customers are what keep her cooking.
“By the end of the day, I'm exhausted. I'm tired. And I'm like, okay, I'm done. I'm not gonna do this again. And then after a weekend of rest I'm like, I gotta go back, I can't, I cannot disappoint my customers,” said Dari. “Sometimes I'll be back here making hummus and I won't have, for instance, the pickle hummus out there. And a customer would come and ask, 'Oh, do you guys have pickle hummus?' And I'm like, actually, I'm working on it right now. Give me a couple of minutes.
"And I'll really, really fast I'll get how many containers they want, I'll decorate it, package it up and give it to them. I'll stop whatever I'm doing and do that and go out of my way to do that and just give it to them.”
And it’s not just the hummus and great hospitality that keeps customers coming back. They’ve made a name for themselves beyond their hummus game.
At their deli they offer food like gyro sandwiches, corned and roast beef sandwiches, teriyaki chicken, falafel sandwiches, chicken wraps and more. It’s a daily lunch spot for many workers in the area.
“This food is different and it’s good,” said Samson Snowden, a customer. “You see it’s hot and ready? It ain't just sitting around, they make it hot and ready. Yeah, it’s for sure the best gas station around here.”
Dari said her home is Ohio, but her heart is in Palestine. Her hummus is just one way she stays close to her roots and shares her culture with Ohio.
“This is my passion. Cooking is my passion. And I enjoy it like I said to me cooking is therapy, cooking is love. I enjoy it. When I cook, I cook from my heart. I cook to make people happy,” said Dari. “We are good people and what better way to bring people together and to learn about each other's culture is with food, and especially food made with love.”

Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost announced Aug. 10 that his office is suing a Columbia Station construction company and its owners are accused of pocketing more than $289,000 in consumers’ money while failing to complete construction projects, as well as engaging in other unacceptable behavior, according to a news release.
“We will not tolerate predatory practices that threaten the hard-earned money of Ohioans,” Yost said in the release. “This serves as a stark reminder that accountability will be exacted for such unscrupulous behavior.”
The lawsuit against Diamond Ridge Construction Services and owners Thomas Boyd and Brian Stepp alleges multiple violations of the Ohio Consumer Sales Practices Act and the Ohio Home Construction Service Supplies Act, according to the release.
Diamond Ridge operates out of 27102 Royalton Road, and specializes in home construction services.
The Attorney General’s Office responded to 13 consumers who lodged complaints against Diamond Ridge for a staggering cumulative loss of $289,337.17, arising from contracts made from April 6, 2022, to March 31, 2023, the release said.
When reached by The Morning Journal late morning Aug. 10, Boyd said he did not know about the lawsuit and did not comment.
The complaints detail the following allegations:
• One consumer reported the completion of their project, only to find out that a subcontractor placed a lien on their property due to non payment from Diamond Ridge. • Another individual was working with a general contractor who abruptly stopped the project, attributing the halt to Stepp and Boyd’s non payment. • Others voiced their concerns over projects that remained stagnant or were started but not finished, with no refunds issued. • Some consumers were forced to pay large down payments, coupled with contracts that failed to provide important details. • A pattern of Stepp and Boyd failing to obtain the appropriate contractor registrations permits.
In 2018, the Attorney General’s Office secured a default judgment and permanent injunction against Stepp and his home improvement company Ashley Contractors, underscoring Stepp’s prior involvement in bad activities, according to the release.
Yost’s lawsuit seeks to have Diamond Ridge, Stepp and Boyd reimburse consumers and pay civil penalties and court costs, the release said.
