To be the best, the Walsh Jesuit High School football team needed to beat the best.
Unfortunately for Walsh, it could not upset defending Division II state champion Avon in a state semifinal on Friday, Nov. 28, at the University of Akron. Walsh lost 38-7 and fell short of reaching its first Ohio High School Athletic Association state final appearance in football since 1999.
Here is how the action between Walsh (11-2) and Avon (13-1) unfolded:

With 41 seconds left, Avon senior Jensen Petro made a 35-yard field goal to give the Eagles a 38-7 lead.

Walsh Jesuit and Avon record interceptions in fourth quarter
Walsh and Avon traded interceptions on back-to-back possessions in the fourth quarter.
Walsh senior defensive back Grant Blascak intercepted Avon senior quarterback Blake Elder with 10:13 left to play. Four plays later, Avon junior defensive back Jairel Fenton intercepted a pass from Walsh junior quarterback David Ternosky.
Avon then chewed up clock and ended its final possession with a field goal.

Avon began another drive near midfield after a Walsh turnover on downs, this time at Avon's 47-yard line with 4:14 left in the third quarter.
Avon went ahead 35-7 when senior quarterback Blake Elder threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Fin Jerdonek with 2:47 left in the third quarter. Avon's trick-play pass on a two-point attempt fell incomplete.

On second-and-10, senior quarterback Blake Elder connected with senior wide receiver Grant Barr for a 38-yard touchdown pass. Avon went for two points, but Walsh linebacker Alex Dachille broke up a pass by Elder on the failed attempt.
Avon began the scoring drive on its 46-yard line after Walsh had another turnover on downs with 8:48 left in the third quarter. Walsh went for it on fourth-and-4, but junior quarterback David Ternosky's pass fell incomplete.
Avon led Walsh 29-7 with 6:13 left in the third quarter.

After Walsh scored on the game's opening kickoff and threatened again to begin the second quarter, Avon dominated the first half. Walsh trailed 23-7 at halftime.

Walsh went for it on fourth-and-4 at its own 48-yard line, and Avon senior Jerry Clements broke up a pass from junior quarterback David Ternosky to senior wide receiver Milan Parris. The turnover on downs occurred with 2:57 left in the second quarter.
Avon took advantage. On third-and-7, senior quarterback Blake Elder connected with senior tight end Killian Haessig for an 18-yard touchdown pass. The extra-point kick was no good. Avon extended its lead to 23-7 with 35 seconds left in the second quarter.

Walsh junior quarterback David Ternosky had another pass intercepted off deflection. Avon senior Sammy Ulery recorded the interception and returned it 30 yards to the Walsh 28-yard line.
Walsh's defense proved to be stout and held Avon to a field goal. Senior Jensen Petro made the 27-yard attempt to give Avon a 17-7 lead with 5:59 left in the second quarter.

On second-and-goal at the 5-yard line, Walsh junior quarterback David Ternosky had his pass deflected, intercepted and returned 98 yards for a touchdown. Senior Caden Clapham scored the defensive TD for Avon, and the Eagles took a 14-7 lead with 11:12 remaining in the second quarter.
The 14-point swing represents major adversity for Walsh.

On third-and-8 at the Walsh 27-yard line, junior quarterback David Ternosky and senior wide receiver Milan Parris connected for 34 yards and a crucial first down. Walsh then ran the ball into the red zone.

After Walsh's defense forced a three-and-out, the Warriors took a gamble on offense. On fourth-and-2 at the Walsh 48-yard line, Warriors coach Nick Alexander elected to go for it. Junior quarterback David Ternosky's pass intended for senior wide receiver Milan Parris on the perimeter fell incomplete with 7:03 left in the first quarter.
Four plays later, senior running back Cam Wendell rushed for a 1-yard touchdown, and Avon tied the score 7-7 with 5:40 left in the opening quarter.
Avon defense gets stop after Walsh recovered fumble
On the Avon offense's second play from scrimmage, Walsh recovered a fumble by Avon senior Caden Clapham with 10:56 left in the first quarter.
Walsh took possession at its 48-yard line after the takeaway, but the Warriors went three-and-out and punted.

Walsh Jesuit senior wide receiver Milan Parris returned the game's opening kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown. Senior Freddie Marcell made the ensuing extra-point kick, and Walsh seized a 7-0 lead with 11:48 left in the first quarter.

Last week, Walsh defeated rival Archbishop Hoban 35-7. It was Walsh's first playoff win over Hoban since 1998.
Walsh senior running back Marty Tobin finished with 23 carries for 199 yards and two touchdowns. Junior quarterback David Ternosky returned from an injury and went 6-of-9 passing for 114 yards and two touchdowns, a 6-yard pass to senior wide receiver Milan Parris and a 39-yard pass to junior wide receiver Cambell Lann. Senior running back Carlos Smith rushed eight times for 50 yards and a TD.

Ternosky is 99-of-166 passing this season for 1,374 yards and 19 touchdowns with six interceptions.
Tobin has 157 carries for 1,755 yards and 18 TDs. Smith has 89 carries for 547 yards and eight TDs. Ternosky has 67 carries for 375 yards and four TDs.
Walsh's top receivers are Miami Hurricanes recruit Parris (45 catches, 731 yards, 11 TDs) and Lann (20 catches, 282 yards, four TDs).
Walsh's offensive line is led by senior Colton Crosley, an Ohio University recruit.
Walsh's defense features a talented secondary with senior and Toledo commit Grant Blascak (87 tackles, interception), senior and Ohio recruit James Brewer (44 tackles, seven pass breakups, two interceptions), senior Tommy Pulletti (34 tackles, six pass breakups) and junior Ben Biel (51 tackles, six pass breakups, two interceptions).
Senior and Bowling Green commit Caden Carter (95 tackles, five for loss, four sacks, two interceptions, two defensive TDs), senior Alex Dachille (95 tackles, three sacks) and junior Drew Wollschleger (60 tackles) lead Walsh's linebacking corps.
Junior Dario Jeras (75 tackles, 13 for loss, six sacks) and senior Cade Romanini (58 tackles, five for loss, five sacks) are standouts on Walsh's defensive line.

Senior running back Quiante' Smith rushed for 168 yards on 23 carries and a TD against Highland.
Junior defensive lineman Jack Fitch also recovered a fumble in the end zone for a TD. Junior linebacker Nathan Peters returned a blocked field goal for a TD.

Senior quarterback Blake Elder, the son of Eagles coach Mike Elder and the All-Northeast Lakes Offensive Player of the Year, is 164-of-240 passing this season for 2,626 yards with 28 TDs with three interceptions.
Avon's top wide receivers are senior Grant Barr (56 receptions, 919 yards, 10 TDs), junior Fin Jerdonek (43 receptions, 634 yards, seven TDs) and senior Caden Clapham (21 receptions, 356 yards, four TDs).
Avon's leading rushers are Smith (91 carries, 541 yards, nine touchdowns), junior running back Michael Colburn (79 carries, 392, seven TDs) and senior running back Cam Wendell (64 carries, 264 yards, 10 TDs).
Avon senior linebacker Ryan Stolarski is the All-Northeast Lakes Defensive Player of the Year. He has 85 tackles, eight for loss, five sacks and two interceptions.
Senior defensive back and North Carolina commit Jakob Weatherspoon (43 tackles), senior defensive lineman and Cincinnati commit Lance Dawson (24 tackles, nine for loss, five sacks, 29 QB pressures), junior defensive back Jairel Fenton (four interceptions), defensive back Clapham (two forced fumbles), senior defensive back Jerry Clements (two forced fumbles), senior linebacker Dane Sexton (three fumble recoveries) are other Avon standouts.

Walsh is in the playoffs for the sixth year in a row and 23rd time overall. Walsh won the Division II state championship in 1999 and was the Division III state runner-up in 1998. The Warriors were also Division I state semifinalists in 1993, Division II state semifinalists in 1994 and Division III state semifinalists in 1997.

Avon has reached a state semifinal for the eighth time in the past nine years. Avon's first six trips to the semifinals in its recent run ended five times in a loss to Hoban and once in a loss to Massillon. Avon finally broke through last year with a 35-10 win over Hoban in a state semifinal before defeating Cincinnati Anderson 20-13 in the Division II state title game.
