Home Care Fisherville, KY

They say that your golden years are the best years of your life. For most older Americans, that's how it should be - a time to relax, reflect, and live life in a familiar place. After all, senior citizens in the U.S. have worked tirelessly to build a better economy, serve their communities, and raise families.

However, as seniors grow older, completing daily tasks like showering and enjoying activities such as visiting the historic Waveland State Historic Site gets harder without someone by their side. Unfortunately, many older Americans aren't able to rely on their adult children for help. The reality in today's world is that family members do not have the skills or time to dedicate to caring for their parents. That's where Always Best Care Senior Services comes in.

Our in-home care services are for people who prefer to stay at home as they grow older but need ongoing care that family or friends cannot provide. More and more older adults prefer to live far away from long-term, institutionalized facilities and closer to the place where they feel most comfortable - their home. Home care in Fisherville, KY is a safe, effective way to give your loved ones the care they need when they need it the most.

“I discussed my husband's balance problem with several senior care agencies and the agency I was most impressed with was Always Best Care. The people they have working for them are kind and considerate. They go the extra mile to help their client remain mentally alert and physically independent. They give their client just enough help so that the client feels safe and secure but not helpless. My husband had to go to Forest Spring's Health Campus because of a fall he had at home. Because of his injury, he needed 24/7 care. I called Dan Chitwood and within an hour he had his employees helping my husband. My husband has made a complete recovery from the injury but he still needs help with a balance issue. A physical therapist comes to his home and Dan's employee helps him work on the physical therapy exercises recommended for him. My husband and I have been married for 57 years and with Dan Chitwood's employees help, who knows maybe we will make it another 57 years.”

What is Non-Medical Senior Care in Fisherville, KY?

lm-check

Home is where the heart is. While that saying can sound a tad cliche, it is especially true for many seniors living in America. When given a choice, older adults most often prefer to grow older at home. An AARP study found that three out of four adults over the age of 50 want to stay in their homes and communities as they age.

lm-check

When you begin to think about why, it makes sense. Home offers a sense of security, comfort, and familiarity.

lm-check

The truth is, as we age, we begin to rely on others for help. When a family is too busy or lives too far away to fulfill this role, in-home senior care is often the best solution. Home care services allow seniors to enjoy personal independence while also receiving trustworthy assistance from a trained caregiver.

lm-check

At Always Best Care, we offer a comprehensive range of home care services to help seniors stay healthy while they get the help they need to remain independent. As your senior loved one gets older, giving them the gift of senior care is one of the best ways to show your love, even if you live far away.

Respite Care

Respite Care Services

According to AARP, more than 53 million adults living in the U.S. provide care to someone over 50 years old. Unfortunately, these caregivers experience stress, exhaustion, and even depression. Our respite care services help family caregivers address urgent obligations, spend time with their children, and enjoy nearby activities. Perhaps more importantly, respite care gives family members time to recharge and regroup. Taking personal time to de-stress reduces the risk of caregiver burnout. So, if you've always wanted to eat at the local Le Relais Restaurant or visit Thomas Edison House, don't feel bad. Doing so is great for both you and your loved one.

At the end of the day, our goal is to become a valuable part of your senior's daily routine. That way, we may help give them the highest quality of life possible. We know that staying at home is important for your loved one, and we are here to help make sure that is possible.

If you have been on the fence about non-medical home care, there has never been a better time than now to give your senior the care, assistance, and companionship they deserve.

Aging in Place: The Preferred Choice for Most Seniors

While it's true that some seniors have complicated medical needs that prevent them from staying at home, aging in place is often the best arrangement for seniors and their families. With a trusted caregiver, seniors have the opportunity to live with a sense of dignity and do so as they see fit - something that is unavailable to many older people today.

In-home care makes it possible for millions of seniors to age in place every year. Rather than moving to a strange nursing home, seniors have the chance to stay at home where they feel the happiest and most comfortable.

Here are just a few of the reasons why older men and women prefer to age at home:

How much does a senior's home truly mean to them?

A study published by the American Society on Aging found that more than half of seniors say their home's emotional value means more than how much their home is worth in monetary value. It stands to reason, then, that a senior's home is where they want to grow old.

With the help of elderly care in Fisherville, KY, seniors don't have to age in a sterilized care facility. Instead, they can age gracefully in the place they want to be most: their home. In contrast, seniors who move to a long-term care facility must adapt to new environments, new people, and new systems that the facility implements. At this stage in life, this kind of drastic change can be more harmful than helpful.

Institutional care facilities like nursing homes often put large groups of people together to live in one location. On any given day, dozens of staff members and caregivers run in and out of these facilities. Being around so many new people in a relatively small living environment can be dangerous for a seniors' health and wellbeing. When you consider that thousands of seniors passed away in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, opting for in-home care is often a safer, healthier choice for seniors.

Aging in place has been shown to improve seniors' quality of life, which helps boost physical health and also helps insulate them from viral and bacterial risks found in elderly living facilities.

For many seniors, the ability to live independently with assistance from a caregiver is a priceless option. With in-home care, seniors experience a higher level of independence and freedom - much more so than in other settings like a nursing home. When a senior has the chance to age in place, they get to live life on their own terms, inside the house that they helped make into a home. More independence means more control over their personal lives, too, which leads to increased levels of fulfillment, happiness, and personal gratification. Over time, these positive feelings can manifest into a healthier, longer life.

More independence, a healthier life, and increased comfort are only a few benefits of aging in place. You have to take into consideration the role of cost and convenience. Simply put, it's usually easier and more affordable to help seniors age in place than it is to move them into an institutional care facility. According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, seniors who age in the comfort of their homes can save thousands of dollars per month.

In-home care services from Always Best Care, for instance, are often less expensive than long-term solutions, which can cost upwards of six figures per year. To make matters worse, many residential care facilities are reluctant to accept long-term care insurance and other types of payment assistance.

With Always Best Care's home care services, seniors and their families have a greater level of control over their care plans. In-home care gives seniors the chance to form a bond with a trusted caregiver and also receive unmatched care that is catered to their needs. In long-term care facilities, seniors and their loved ones have much less control over their care plan and have less of a say in who provides their care.

Affordable Care

In-home care is a valuable resource that empowers seniors to age in place on their own terms. However, a big concern for many families and their loved ones is how much in-home care costs. If you're worried that in-home care is too expensive, you may be pleasantly surprised to learn that it is one of the most affordable senior care arrangements available.

Typically, hiring an Always Best Care in-home caregiver for a few hours a week is more affordable than sending your loved one to a long-term care facility. This is true even for seniors with more complex care needs.

At Always Best Care, we will work closely with you and your family to develop a Care Plan that not only meets your care needs, but your budget requirements, too. Once we discover the level of care that you or your senior need, we develop an in-home care plan that you can afford.

In addition to our flexible care options, families should also consider the following resources to help offset potential home care costs:

If your loved one qualifies, Medicaid may help reduce in-home care costs. Review your KY's Medicaid program laws and benefits, and make sure your senior's financial and medical needs meet Medicaid eligibility requirements.
Attendance and aid benefits through military service can cover a portion of the costs associated with in-home care for veterans and their spouses.
Many senior care services like in-home care are included in long-term care insurance options. Research different long-term care solutions to find a plan that provides coverage for senior care.
Home care can be included as part of a senior's private insurance plan. Read over your loved one's insurance policy carefully or speak with their insurance provider to determine if in-home care is covered.
Depending on the life insurance plan, you may be able to apply your policy toward long-term care. You may be able to use long-term-care coverage to help pay for in-home elderly care.

Compassionate Care. Trusted Caregivers.

When you or your senior loved one needs assistance managing daily tasks at home, finding a qualified caregiver can be challenging. It takes a special kind of person to provide reliable care for your senior loved one. However, a caregiver's role involves more than meal preparation and medication reminders. Many seniors rely on their caregivers for companionship, too.

Our companion care services give seniors the chance to socialize in a safe environment and engage in activities at home. These important efforts boost morale and provide much-needed relief from repetitive daily routines. A one-on-one, engaging conversation can sharpen seniors' minds and give them something in which to be excited.

At Always Best Care, we only hire care providers that we would trust to care for our own loved ones. Our senior caregivers in Fisherville, KY understand how important it is to listen and communicate with their seniors. A seemingly small interaction, like a short hug goodbye, can make a major difference in a senior's day. Instead of battling against feelings of isolation, seniors begin to look forward to seeing their caregiver each week.

Understanding the nuances of senior care is just one of the reasons why our care providers are so great at their job.

Unlike some senior care companies, our caregivers must undergo extensive training before they work for Always Best Care. In addition, our caregivers receive ongoing training throughout the year. This training ensures that their standard of care matches up to the high standards we've come to expect. During this training, they will brush up on their communication skills, safety awareness, and symptom spotting. That way, your loved one receives the highest level of non-medical home care from day one.

Assisted Living Referral Services

While it's true that many seniors prefer to age at home, sometimes in-home care isn't the best fit. For those seniors and their families, choosing an assisted living facility makes more sense. Unfortunately, finding the optimal care facility is easier said than done in today's day and age. That's when Always Best Care's assisted living referral services begin to make a lot of sense.

Assisted living is a form of housing intended for seniors who require varying degrees of medical and personal attention. Accommodations may include single rooms, apartments, or shared living arrangements. Assisted living communities are typically designed to resemble a home-like environment and are physically constructed to encourage the independence of residents.

Respite Care Fisherville, KY

At assisted living communities, seniors receive help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and eating. They may also benefit from coordination of services with outside healthcare providers, and monitoring of resident activities to ensure their health, safety, and well-being. Caregivers who work at assisted living communities can also provide medication administration and personal care services for older adults.

Other services offered within assisted living communities can include some or all of the following:

  • Housekeeping
  • Laundry
  • Recreational Activities
  • Social Outings
  • Emergency Medical Response
  • Medication Monitoring
  • Family Visitation
  • Personal Care
 Caregivers Fisherville, KY

At Always Best Care, our representatives can match your senior's emotional, physical, and financial needs with viable assisted living communities nearby. Results are based on comparative data, so you can select the best choice for you or your loved one.

Always Best Care works closely with local senior living communities to gain valuable knowledge that we then use to help seniors and their loved ones make informed decisions. This information can include basic care and rent, resident availability, and services provided. Because Always Best Care is compensated by these communities, we provide senior living referral services at no extra cost to you.

Some of the most popular assisted living communities to consider in our area include the following:

  • Building Concepts For Seniors
  • Dominion Senior Living of Louisville
  • Arcadia Senior Living Louisville
  • Twinbrook Assisted Living Apartments
  • Magnolia Springs East Louisville
  • Creekside On Bardstown

Annette Vitale had been eyeing a particular property in Fisherville for years. She drove past the sprawling estate numerous times and eventually got the opportunity to see its interior.

“About 12 years ago,” she told The Courier Journal, “me and my sisters … drove up to (it). There was a door open in the back, so we went in and took a tour of the property.”

Vitale said the whole house was full of junk, and there were leaks and mold everywhere. It had been vacant for several years.

“It was in just horrible condition,” she said, adding that she couldn’t afford to buy it then, anyway. But 10 years later, when Vitale was in the business of flipping houses, she spotted an open house sign in front of the property.

She went in to talk to the people there and learned that the owner was selling — but was looking to decide within 24 hours. She put in an offer and included a letter about her plans for the place.

Unlike other potential buyers, Vitale had no intention of knocking down the historic structure to make way for something new. Instead, she wanted to exercise her design and remodeling skills to bring the estate back to its former glory.

“(They) called 10 minutes later and said, ‘If you want it, the house is yours,’” Vitale recalled. “I started crying, (but) I don’t know if it was because I was happy or sad. I didn’t know what I was getting into.”

Made over and modernized

The home was a federal-style farmhouse in the 1800s and was later converted into a saddlebred farm in the 1980s. Today, it features pieces of its historical past throughout, with modern amenities woven into each room. Vitale spent three years renovating all 12,000 square feet of the home, plus its extensive outdoor area.

“We tried to keep in mind every little luxury that people would expect to have … in a place like this,” she said, “(but it still feels) homey and welcoming. It’s not ostentatious at all.”

In the entryway, the original fanlight window from the 1790s is still intact. The grand corridor features 200-year-old, hand-hewn beams, and the primary living area boasts its original federal-style flooring, mantels, banister, and trim.

While historical elements add unique touches to the property’s aesthetic, everything has been redone for practical, modern life. Heated flooring throughout each bathroom and the indoor entertainment area — as well as seven working fireplaces — offer ample warmth on cold, winter nights. Premium GE appliances, an electric vehicle charging station, and multiple decked-out entertainment areas provide everything needed to accommodate guests.

Snazzy speakeasy

The basement used to be nothing but storage space, and there was no easy access to the area. Vitale changed that, adding a staircase that leads to what is now a speakeasy-style bourbon and wine cellar.

“(It’s) one of my favorite spaces,” Vitale said, adding that the ceiling art is a whimsical play on Renaissance pictures. “George Washington has a martini glass, (and) Abraham Lincoln has a lollipop in his mouth. It’s just something interesting to look at on the ceiling.”

The space also features a huge piece of etched-glass art that was upstairs when Vitale purchased the property.

“That thing weighs (almost) 400 pounds,” she said of the art that depicts Greek mythology’s Leda and the Swan. “It’s 3/4-inch thick glass.”

Of course, the speakeasy isn’t just full of fun art; it’s fully functional, too. The space boasts a large bar with brand-new appliances, including a pizza oven.

Ducks and Derby City

Vitale incorporated nods to Louisville and the property’s former life as a saddlebred farm with equine touches throughout. There are also subtle duck accents woven in, giving attention to the home’s history. One such adornment sits outside.

“(The previous owner) built a miniature replica of the house and put it in the pond,” Vitale explained. “It was left in the garage, but I couldn’t restore it, (so) we built another.”

She added that the 30-foot replica is something that people in the area remember and recognize. It was referred to as the "duck house," so Vitale chose to honor its memory by renaming her property Mallard Hall.

“Staying connected to the property’s past was always front of mind,” she said. “It was both a challenge and a creative opportunity to ensure the integrity of (its) history and its vast transition over the past 200 years. … You’ll see glimpses of these connections throughout the home.”

FISHERVILLE, KY — After the unexpected closure of the Fisherville Post Office nearly four months ago, the office is set to officially reopen on Monday, August 24.

The Post Office, located at 15125 Old Taylorsville Road, was forced to close its doors on April 27 due to safety concerns after brown recluse spiders were discovered inside the building.

Post Office Box customers who had been picking up their mail at Eastwood KY Post Office will be able to resume pick up at the Fisherville Post Office starting Monday.

“It’s been a long time coming but we’ve finally been given the all-clear to reopen,” said a relieved Taylorsville Postmaster Sandra Caudill. “After countless pesticide treatments and some exterior patching, the building has been deemed safe by our maintenance department. We will resume operations in Fisherville next week.”

“All along, our top priority has been for the safety of postal customers and our employees,” added Caudill. “We appreciate everyone’s patience and apologize for the inconvenience the situation caused.”

Revised plans for the massive Covington by the Park housing project along Floyds Fork reduce the number of single-family lots in the development, but wary neighbors aren't appeased.

The 833-lot subdivision, proposed as a special conservation district, would still be too massive, generate too much traffic and would put stress on utilities, said Steve Porter, an attorney representing Fisherville-area residents. "It's just too big," he said in an interview.

The developer and landowner, a group called Long Run Creek Properties LLC, plans the single-family homes in the conservation subdivision as part of the development of a 454-acre site.

The project would be along Taylorsville Lake Road near Routt Road and Fisherville in far southeast Jefferson County. The property is a short distance from Floyds Fork and from Pope Lick Park in the Parklands of Floyds Fork recreational corridor that extends for miles along the creek.

Porter's client, the Fisherville Area Neighborhood Association, has said that a chief concern is traffic on Taylorsville Lake Road. The road is especially busy in the summer as people go to and from Taylorsville Lake.

Anna Rosales-Crone, a spokeswoman for the Parklands, said more information is needed but she is not sure her agency had any concerns. "But we are keeping our eye on it to make sure there is no negative impact" on the Parklands, she said.

A feature of the revised plan is an intent to sell a large chunk of the target site to a non-profit, trust-style agency for long-range preservation.

Rezoning for the subdivision is not required. But the plan, including the design, and the environmental, transportation and other considerations must be reviewed by the Metro Planning Commission, likely after a hearing.

The conservation subdivision regulations allow those developments to provide for a clustering of residences away from watersheds and environmentally sensitive areas and require extensive open space and tree cover.

The developers also propose seeking a zoning change on 19 acres at the site. The Long Run Creek group's zoning attorney, Bill Bardenwerper, said specifics of a planned retail/commercial site are not yet certain – but previous ideas expressed for the site have included various stores, a restaurant, bank and gasoline station.

The rezoning would require a Planning Commission hearing, followed by a commission recommendation to the Louisville Metro Council, which has the final say on most local zoning cases.

Long Run Creek Properties – a partnership of Brad Rives, Jack Smith and Rick Riney – recently closed on the property, which had been owned by an estate.

The group has invited neighbors to a meeting at 7 p.m. Sept. 25 at St. Michael's School, 3705 Stone Lakes Drive, to discuss the plan. The notice from Bardenwerper said neighbors can ask questions.

Plans for developing the large, mostly vacant parcel have been in the works for several years. One earlier plan called for nearly 1,400 single-family home sites on the parcel.

Another developer took steps to develop the same property in 2009 but those plans were shelved in the face of the housing recession, Bardenwerper said.

The subdivision's 833 lots would still make it one of the larger housing developments in Jefferson County. It would be more than half as large as Lake Forest.

A key new feature of the revised plan, Bardenwerper said, is that the developers intend to sell 165 acres, or more than one-third of the site, to the Future Fund. That nonprofit, conservation-minded agency was founded by former Lt. Gov. Steve Henry. It helped assemble much of the vast land that now makes up the Parklands – which is under the management of 21st Century Parks.

Bardenwerper said that in addition to the property to be sold to the Future Fund, at least 98 acres of the 454-acre site will be set aside as open space.

He said most of the lots will be 50 feet wide and around 100 feet deep. The subdivision will probably be sold off in phases to individual builders to develop the homes. Typical residences will range from $350,000 to $450,000, Bardenwerper said.

The subdivision's development probably will take five to 10 years, he said. Sewers and other infrastructure must be installed.

For the first couple of years, beekeeping was just a hobby for Joel Gonia and his family.

Now, it's become much more than that.

Gonia runs HoneyBear Farms and the store The Honey Depot in Fisherville, Kentucky, selling 12 kinds of honey, beekeeping equipment, honey-based products and more. The shop even offers beekeeping classes taught by the only five Master Beekeepers in Kentucky.

HoneyBear Farms and its partner beekeepers together have more than 1,400 hives. Last year, they produced 60,000 pounds of honey.

Raw honey produced locally, Gonia said, has several health benefits. Honey is a naturally occurring antiseptic that will "cleanse you from the inside out," as long as it hasn't been overly filtered. But it also has medicinal advantages for people's immune systems.

"Natural honey has natural nectar and pollens, which is in the air that we breathe and the water that we drink and the food we taste from the plants. And over a period of time it'll help strengthen your immune system [against allergens]," Gonia said.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Economic Research Service, 73% of honey in the U.S. is imported from countries like Vietnam, Argentina, India and Brazil. Gonia said a "good portion" of imported honey includes added ingredients like corn syrup.

"I think more people are looking for local products for the health benefits and to support local companies," Gonia said. "Anybody can go to Kroger and find seven options. But very seldom are there local options. Honey is delicious, it's sticky, and it's real good for you. We are happy to represent our own product."

If you want to try a locally produced honey, you can find it at stores such as Rainbow Blossom Natural Food Markets or Paul's Fruit Market. Here are four local brands to seek out next time you have a taste for something sweet.

Cave Hill Cemetery

The historic Cave Hill Cemetery in the Highlands is known for many things, including being the final resting place of legendary boxer Muhammad Ali. But there's a little-known sweet perk, too: the Cave Hill staff have become beekeepers. Cave Hill Cemetery has about 10 active beehives and produces about 900 pounds of honey per season, which runs from April to August. The honey is bottled and sold at the cemetery, with proceeds going to the Cave Hill Heritage Foundation. It even won a blue ribbon in the light amber honey category at last year's Kentucky State Fair.

Cave Hill's honey is $10 for an 8-ounce jar and $13 for a one-pound jar and can be purchased at the Cave Hill Heritage Foundation office or the Cave Hill Cemetery main office.

Paul and Kaye Brown started this natural products company when Paul wanted to make his own mead, or honey wine, at home. Instead, he took up beekeeping. Now the Browns sell a variety of natural products like bar soap, beeswax balms ($4-$8), moisturizers and of course, honey.

Earthy Brown's Natural Products can be found at a variety of local sites, including the Louisville Visitors Center, Lucky's Market, Rainbow Blossom, Paul's Fruit Market and A Taste of KY.

HoneyBear Farms

While the official name of this family operation is HoneyBear Farms KY, it's better known as "The Honey Depot." Joel and Ruth Gonia sell raw, unfiltered honey from Kentucky bees in their shop, as well as an assortment of other products ranging from hives to beekeeping equipment and soap.

Joel Gonia hopes to bring Kentucky honey to many Louisville-area neighborhoods with the opening of five new stores in the next year. The new stores will serve as local coffee shops and also sell honey and honey-based products.

Shop for HoneyBear products on the company's website or visit various area farmers' markets on Saturdays to grab a bottle. HoneyBear sells 12 different flavors of honey at various price points, with the most common, Wildflower Kentucky Honey, set at $8.50 for an 8-ounce jar and $12.50 for a 1-lb jar. The Honey Depot store is open Monday to Friday 1-6 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
