Home Care Westport, KY

They say that your golden years are the best years of your life. For most older Americans, that's how it should be - a time to relax, reflect, and live life in a familiar place. After all, senior citizens in the U.S. have worked tirelessly to build a better economy, serve their communities, and raise families.

However, as seniors grow older, completing daily tasks like showering and enjoying activities such as visiting the historic Westport Covered Bridge gets harder without someone by their side. Unfortunately, many older Americans aren't able to rely on their adult children for help. The reality in today's world is that family members do not have the skills or time to dedicate to caring for their parents. That's where Always Best Care Senior Services comes in.

Our in-home care services are for people who prefer to stay at home as they grow older but need ongoing care that family or friends cannot provide. More and more older adults prefer to live far away from long-term, institutionalized facilities and closer to the place where they feel most comfortable - their home. Home care in Westport, KY is a safe, effective way to give your loved ones the care they need when they need it the most.

The Always Best Care difference lies in life's little moments - where compassionate care and trustworthy experience come together to help seniors live a fruitful, healthy life. “I discussed my husband's balance problem with several senior care agencies and the agency I was most impressed with was Always Best Care. The people they have working for them are kind and considerate. They go the extra mile to help their client remain mentally alert and physically independent. They give their client just enough help so that the client feels safe and secure but not helpless. My husband had to go to Forest Spring's Health Campus because of a fall he had at home. Because of his injury, he needed 24/7 care. I called Dan Chitwood and within an hour he had his employees helping my husband. My husband has made a complete recovery from the injury but he still needs help with a balance issue. A physical therapist comes to his home and Dan's employee helps him work on the physical therapy exercises recommended for him. My husband and I have been married for 57 years and with Dan Chitwood's employees help, who knows maybe we will make it another 57 years.”

“Dan Chitwood and his staff of experienced caregivers have been taking care of my dad who has alzheimers for about three years. The caregivers took care of cooking, personal care and did light housekeeping. They took him shopping with them for weekly groceries, took him to doctor visits and on outings to the neighborhood parks. The few times that a care giver would call in sick, if Dan couldn't fill the shift he would come work the shift himself. Dan Chitwood takes pride in offering quality care for his clients and we highly recommend Always Best Care. Many thanks to you Dan and your staff, especially to Debbie who was my dad's main care giver. Mark Stevens”

“Always Best Care (ABC) is truly the BEST! My father has Alzheimer's Disease and requires 24/7 care. I live 800 miles away, so it is very difficult for me to manage his care. ABC provides peace of mind for me knowing that they will call when there are concerns or changes with my dad so that I am always in the loop with his care. ABC has NEVER once not covered a shift if there was a schedule change, etc. ABC provides personal cares, meal preps, homemaking, transportation, medication reminders, you name it they cover it. Always Best Care is privately owned so there is a close connection with the owner Dan Chitwood 24/7 if necessary. Mr. Chitwood is actively involved with my dad and makes frequent visits to my dad's home and my dad loves him!! He treats my dad like family where his care is concerned. I am a retired RN and worked in home health for many years. I have never seen anything like this!! Always Best Care is THE BEST! Thank you ABC for loving my dad!”

“Dan is one of the most caring people I know! He sat down and took a couple hours of his valuable time to discuss options and assisted living/memory care options for my grandmother. Dan helped us look at reviews of facilities, ratios of RN vs LPN along with complaints filed on facilities. He cared about where and how my grandmother would be cared for. He really looks at his clients as family and I would highly recommend anyone needing elder care, assisted living placement assistance or help figuring out where to start with caring for your senior loved ones to contact Dan. Be sure you contact Dan Chitwood at the RIGHT Always Best Care (ABC) so you get best! - ALWAYS!”

What is Non-Medical Senior Care in Westport, KY?

lm-check

Home is where the heart is. While that saying can sound a tad cliche, it is especially true for many seniors living in America. When given a choice, older adults most often prefer to grow older at home. An AARP study found that three out of four adults over the age of 50 want to stay in their homes and communities as they age.

lm-check

When you begin to think about why, it makes sense. Home offers a sense of security, comfort, and familiarity.

lm-check

The truth is, as we age, we begin to rely on others for help. When a family is too busy or lives too far away to fulfill this role, in-home senior care is often the best solution. Home care services allow seniors to enjoy personal independence while also receiving trustworthy assistance from a trained caregiver.

lm-check

At Always Best Care, we offer a comprehensive range of home care services to help seniors stay healthy while they get the help they need to remain independent. As your senior loved one gets older, giving them the gift of senior care is one of the best ways to show your love, even if you live far away.

Respite Care

Respite Care Services

According to AARP, more than 53 million adults living in the U.S. provide care to someone over 50 years old. Unfortunately, these caregivers experience stress, exhaustion, and even depression. Our respite care services help family caregivers address urgent obligations, spend time with their children, and enjoy nearby activities. Perhaps more importantly, respite care gives family members time to recharge and regroup. Taking personal time to de-stress reduces the risk of caregiver burnout. So, if you've always wanted to eat at the local The Cottage, don't feel bad. Doing so is great for both you and your loved one.

At the end of the day, our goal is to become a valuable part of your senior's daily routine. That way, we may help give them the highest quality of life possible. We know that staying at home is important for your loved one, and we are here to help make sure that is possible.

If you have been on the fence about non-medical home care, there has never been a better time than now to give your senior the care, assistance, and companionship they deserve.

Aging in Place: The Preferred Choice for Most Seniors

While it's true that some seniors have complicated medical needs that prevent them from staying at home, aging in place is often the best arrangement for seniors and their families. With a trusted caregiver, seniors have the opportunity to live with a sense of dignity and do so as they see fit - something that is unavailable to many older people today.

In-home care makes it possible for millions of seniors to age in place every year. Rather than moving to a strange nursing home, seniors have the chance to stay at home where they feel the happiest and most comfortable.

Here are just a few of the reasons why older men and women prefer to age at home:

How much does a senior's home truly mean to them?

A study published by the American Society on Aging found that more than half of seniors say their home's emotional value means more than how much their home is worth in monetary value. It stands to reason, then, that a senior's home is where they want to grow old.

With the help of elderly care in Westport, KY, seniors don't have to age in a sterilized care facility. Instead, they can age gracefully in the place they want to be most: their home. In contrast, seniors who move to a long-term care facility must adapt to new environments, new people, and new systems that the facility implements. At this stage in life, this kind of drastic change can be more harmful than helpful.

Institutional care facilities like nursing homes often put large groups of people together to live in one location. On any given day, dozens of staff members and caregivers run in and out of these facilities. Being around so many new people in a relatively small living environment can be dangerous for a seniors' health and wellbeing. When you consider that thousands of seniors passed away in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, opting for in-home care is often a safer, healthier choice for seniors.

Aging in place has been shown to improve seniors' quality of life, which helps boost physical health and also helps insulate them from viral and bacterial risks found in elderly living facilities.

For many seniors, the ability to live independently with assistance from a caregiver is a priceless option. With in-home care, seniors experience a higher level of independence and freedom - much more so than in other settings like a nursing home. When a senior has the chance to age in place, they get to live life on their own terms, inside the house that they helped make into a home. More independence means more control over their personal lives, too, which leads to increased levels of fulfillment, happiness, and personal gratification. Over time, these positive feelings can manifest into a healthier, longer life.

More independence, a healthier life, and increased comfort are only a few benefits of aging in place. You have to take into consideration the role of cost and convenience. Simply put, it's usually easier and more affordable to help seniors age in place than it is to move them into an institutional care facility. According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, seniors who age in the comfort of their homes can save thousands of dollars per month.

In-home care services from Always Best Care, for instance, are often less expensive than long-term solutions, which can cost upwards of six figures per year. To make matters worse, many residential care facilities are reluctant to accept long-term care insurance and other types of payment assistance.

With Always Best Care's home care services, seniors and their families have a greater level of control over their care plans. In-home care gives seniors the chance to form a bond with a trusted caregiver and also receive unmatched care that is catered to their needs. In long-term care facilities, seniors and their loved ones have much less control over their care plan and have less of a say in who provides their care.

Affordable Care

In-home care is a valuable resource that empowers seniors to age in place on their own terms. However, a big concern for many families and their loved ones is how much in-home care costs. If you're worried that in-home care is too expensive, you may be pleasantly surprised to learn that it is one of the most affordable senior care arrangements available.

Typically, hiring an Always Best Care in-home caregiver for a few hours a week is more affordable than sending your loved one to a long-term care facility. This is true even for seniors with more complex care needs.

At Always Best Care, we will work closely with you and your family to develop a Care Plan that not only meets your care needs, but your budget requirements, too. Once we discover the level of care that you or your senior need, we develop an in-home care plan that you can afford.

In addition to our flexible care options, families should also consider the following resources to help offset potential home care costs:

If your loved one qualifies, Medicaid may help reduce in-home care costs. Review your KY's Medicaid program laws and benefits, and make sure your senior's financial and medical needs meet Medicaid eligibility requirements.
Attendance and aid benefits through military service can cover a portion of the costs associated with in-home care for veterans and their spouses.
Many senior care services like in-home care are included in long-term care insurance options. Research different long-term care solutions to find a plan that provides coverage for senior care.
Home care can be included as part of a senior's private insurance plan. Read over your loved one's insurance policy carefully or speak with their insurance provider to determine if in-home care is covered.
Depending on the life insurance plan, you may be able to apply your policy toward long-term care. You may be able to use long-term-care coverage to help pay for in-home elderly care.

Compassionate Care. Trusted Caregivers.

When you or your senior loved one needs assistance managing daily tasks at home, finding a qualified caregiver can be challenging. It takes a special kind of person to provide reliable care for your senior loved one. However, a caregiver's role involves more than meal preparation and medication reminders. Many seniors rely on their caregivers for companionship, too.

Our companion care services give seniors the chance to socialize in a safe environment and engage in activities at home. These important efforts boost morale and provide much-needed relief from repetitive daily routines. A one-on-one, engaging conversation can sharpen seniors' minds and give them something in which to be excited.

At Always Best Care, we only hire care providers that we would trust to care for our own loved ones. Our senior caregivers in Westport, KY understand how important it is to listen and communicate with their seniors. A seemingly small interaction, like a short hug goodbye, can make a major difference in a senior's day. Instead of battling against feelings of isolation, seniors begin to look forward to seeing their caregiver each week.

Understanding the nuances of senior care is just one of the reasons why our care providers are so great at their job.

Unlike some senior care companies, our caregivers must undergo extensive training before they work for Always Best Care. In addition, our caregivers receive ongoing training throughout the year. This training ensures that their standard of care matches up to the high standards we've come to expect. During this training, they will brush up on their communication skills, safety awareness, and symptom spotting. That way, your loved one receives the highest level of non-medical home care from day one.

Assisted Living Referral Services

While it's true that many seniors prefer to age at home, sometimes in-home care isn't the best fit. For those seniors and their families, choosing an assisted living facility makes more sense. Unfortunately, finding the optimal care facility is easier said than done in today's day and age. That's when Always Best Care's assisted living referral services begin to make a lot of sense.

Assisted living is a form of housing intended for seniors who require varying degrees of medical and personal attention. Accommodations may include single rooms, apartments, or shared living arrangements. Assisted living communities are typically designed to resemble a home-like environment and are physically constructed to encourage the independence of residents.

Respite Care Westport, KY

At assisted living communities, seniors receive help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and eating. They may also benefit from coordination of services with outside healthcare providers, and monitoring of resident activities to ensure their health, safety, and well-being. Caregivers who work at assisted living communities can also provide medication administration and personal care services for older adults.

Other services offered within assisted living communities can include some or all of the following:

  • Housekeeping
  • Laundry
  • Recreational Activities
  • Social Outings
  • Emergency Medical Response
  • Medication Monitoring
  • Family Visitation
  • Personal Care
 Caregivers Westport, KY

At Always Best Care, our representatives can match your senior's emotional, physical, and financial needs with viable assisted living communities nearby. Results are based on comparative data, so you can select the best choice for you or your loved one.

Always Best Care works closely with local senior living communities to gain valuable knowledge that we then use to help seniors and their loved ones make informed decisions. This information can include basic care and rent, resident availability, and services provided. Because Always Best Care is compensated by these communities, we provide senior living referral services at no extra cost to you.

Some of the most popular assisted living communities to consider in our area include the following:

  • The Residence at Westport
  • Assisted Living Home Care Services
  • Maplewood Senior Living
  • Home Choice Senior Care Inc
  • Maplewood at Southport
  • Reliable Home Care - 24/7 Care - Best Choice for Senior Care - Westport CT

For many seniors, moving into a senior living community revolves around how and when they want to make a transition to more involved care. This is the second installment of our Day Trips Series, where we travel to different places near Louisville, exploring our local treasures. Today we are profiling Westport, Kentucky.

I have learned that in Kentucky, when you see a squiggly sign like the one pictured below, something beautiful is coming on the horizon soon, like Westport, KY. Heading due east on Highway 42, past Prospect, past Goshen, the wide highway eventually narrows to an old, two lane road. Old general stores, restaurants and churches are sprinkled throughout the drive, with some heavy hitter horse farms mixed in, as well.

Westport, which is 12 miles past the Oldham County/Jefferson County Line, is a river town, so you turn north on Hwy 524 and head to the river. Or as the locals say, go down Brownsboro Road until you see the big WAVE-TV Tower and then turn left right before it; It’s a little over three miles from that turn into Westport.

You pass by old beauties such as this house below:

And when you arrive, you are welcomed by a sign telling you that Westport was established in 1792. Little did I know that I would be meeting someone here this day whose family established themselves here in 1796.

I love a town where the post office has some character, and this one does indeed. It has a “quilt” painting of a flag on the front of the building. You don’t see that too often in the Louisville postal hubs.

Highway 524, otherwise known as Main Street, brings you into town and dead ends here at Westport Park with an incredible view of the Ohio River. You feel as though you could jump right in and swim to Indiana, it looks so close. This would be a great place to picnic.

The day we visited, we stopped at Knock on Wood Mercantile and Cafe to eat lunch and shop.

Knock on Wood is located in the 2,000 square foot old general store. Owner Lea Nachtman and her husband purchased it in 2000 as a place to sell their wares from their craft show business. They opened the cafe portion two years ago. If you are wondering what they sell here on Knock on Wood, this photo below pretty much sums it up:

On one side is the cafe, with seating in quaint tables and booths, each one different, and all the furniture you are sitting on is for sale.

The other side is the gifts, furniture and decor wing of the establishment.

Lea Nachtman and her husband paint and restore all the furniture pieces themselves.

They also sell gifts and decor.

The cafe was bustling when we were there. Lea and her associate prepare all the food themselves and man the shop.

The menu is on a chalkboard and we had a hard time deciding what to order with all the choices of good homemade food.

We ordered a little bit of everything. Among our favorites was the homemade Benedictine with bacon, shown below, with big cucumber chunks and no nasty green food coloring.

My daughter had the Savoy Cabbage Soup with potatoes and carrots and an piece of Spinach, Bacon and Tomato Quiche. They loved the soup so much, we went back and ordered another cup.

One of my summer interns struggled to get the first bite and wanted to keep the toothpick in his sandwich the entire time.

They sell Blue Bell ice cream here by the scoop, so you know that was on the itinerary immediately following lunch.

Bellies full and requisite ice cream scoops later, we head on to our big adventure which is the Little Big Horse Trails, which is a few miles from Main Street.

Little Big Horse Trails offers one hour guided horseback riding on trails. Let me say that we are not horse people, so we needed all the sherpas we could get. (I had a hard enough time just getting my interns to wear jeans and closed-toe shoes, when they initially tried to wear capri yoga pants, flip flops or athletic shorts for this adventure). Wear jeans and closed toe shoes, period. You’ll figure out why immediately.

The proprietor of the horse trail is Garnet Morgan. Garnet’s family emigrated here from Wales and established themselves on over 500 acres in Westport in 1796. He lives in the same house he was raised in. Hearing this made me feel just so … transient.

The Morgan property has been a milk house, and they have raised cows, sheep and now just horses and hay. Garnet is a talented wood sculptor, so the grounds are like a museum, with all this creations and touches. Here is the front porch, with several of his chainsaw sculptures.

Before I ventured to Westport, a number of people said to make sure we visited the facilities on this property, or the “Outhouse” as it is called. It is amazing. Truly the best outhouse I have ever visited.

From our Outhouse pit stop, we meandered to the barn to get on our horses, each with a great name and colorful gear.

We peruse the rules, reading them to my youngest intern, who, I fear, might break rules 7, 9, and 10 immediately.

The trail is three miles long, up down hills and through some beautiful country. There are four of us and we have three guides. I think we fell into the “rookie city folk” category and I’m glad for it, as I am the worst, most nervous rider in the bunch (after a scarring birthday party horse experience when I was 13, this is my first time back in the saddle).

It is a relaxing, quiet hour and for some reason the horses have rendered my interns almost completely silent, which is nothing short of a miracle. They are absolutely focused and entranced.

We had a follower throughout the hour, the farm dog, a European Chow who trotted along with us on our trail ride, intermittently hiding and popping out at the horses.

We avoided the rain all day, but this was our ride back up to the barn. The skies opened up ten minutes after we got here. I love this picture, it looks like something out of a movie.

Little Big Horse Trails can take a guided group of up to twelve people. You have to make a reservation in advance and you have to be six years old to ride. Every rider gets their own horse. The entire tour takes about an hour. What we appreciated the most was their attention to safety and educating new riders on how to sit and where to keep your weight (Heels DOWN, Toes UP).

Westport is close enough that you can do this in afternoon and still feel like you have left town. The land is idyllic and experiencing it on horseback made it feel like vacation. My intern’s direct quote was, ‘I wish we could move here, eat every day at Knock on Wood and then ride horses all afternoon.”

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville company is proposing a nearly 300-unit apartment complex in St. Matthews near Westport Road and Ridgeway Avenue on a rare swath of the suburban city’s undeveloped land.

LDG Development filed plans Monday for the project, which would displace an existing apartment building, offices and The Plant Kingdom garden center and raze those structures. It calls for three buildings on the 8.7-acre site, including a five-story structure, a clubhouse, parking garage and dog park.

The land is now approved for residential, office and commercial uses, but LDG is seeking to have it all rezoned for multifamily living. Part of the property already is zoned for apartments.

If the plans are approved, LDG hopes to buy the land later this year, said Christi Lanier-Robinson, the company’s executive vice president.

Unlike some of the company’s other work that focuses on lower-income housing, the St. Matthews complex would be leased at market rates.

“People think of us as an affordable housing developer, but this is really kind of reflective of the growing trend of multilevel multifamily housing in general,” Lanier-Robinson said. “I mean, a significant portion of our portfolio now is market rate in Kentucky.”

The site is near the intersection of Westport and Ridgeway just north of the main railroad line through St. Matthews, an unusual area where cars moving north on Westport over the railroad tracks don’t have to stop. But there is a two-way stop for vehicles on the north side of the tracks.

The LDG plans call for a new traffic roundabout at Ridgeway and Westport, “which we believe will improve the traffic pattern for everybody,” Lanier-Robinson said.

The Plant Kingdom has been notified of the development plans, Stewart Howe of HGH Development said in an email Tuesday morning. HGH Development is a partner on the project with LDG.

"All leases on the property remain private and active as we continue to work through the terms of our purchase agreement," he said.

Asked to comment on the development plans, The Plant Kingdom's co-owners, Shelly and Tony Nold, said in an emailed statement: "We are looking forward to another exciting season as many beautiful, spring plants will be arriving very soon. It is business as usual for us here at TPK."

The apartment project would be named Gilman's Point Apartments after Daniel Gilman, a prominent 19th century citizen of the city that became St. Matthews.

WESTPORT, KY (WAVE) - A recent fire caused about half a million dollars in damage to a local business serving hundreds of customers in Jefferson and Oldham Counties.

The owners of Westport Custom Cabinets said some of the items destroyed were irreplaceable.

"It's very difficult to see because it is a building that I helped build with my brother growing up," Matt Cooper said.

Cooper and his father own Westport Custom Cabinets. The business has been operating off West Highway 524 for 43 years.

"Because of the big box stores and imported product we are a dying breed," Cooper said. "Since we offer a local handmade product we had a lot of lumber that was sourced locally."

The Westport Fire Department said the damage was so bad they are still investigating the cause. Originally they thought lightning caused the fire, but that was ruled out.

Officials do not believe arson is a possibility.

"Doing this from 1975 we had wood from projects and auctions; and machinery that is irreplaceable because it's hard to find these days," Cooper said.

Around half a million dollars worth of inventory and tools are now piles of burnt debris.

The property used to have two tall wooden barns. The fire in July burned one to the ground and spread to the other. Even surrounding vehicles were scorched in the flames.

The Coopers insurance isn't covering all of the damage.

They set up a GoFundMe to help recover some of the cost. Click here to contribute.

So far through community support they have raised $10,000 and started to rebuild one of the barns.

"Hopefully this makes up some of the difference to get us back into running business," Cooper said.

Eight people lived in Anna Westmoreland's home in Westport, but thankfully everyone made it out safely Sunday afternoon.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A fire destroyed a family home and all their belongings in the Oldham County town of Westport Sunday afternoon.

Anna Westmoreland said she and seven other family members and friends, including children, lived in the home.

Westmoreland was at home when the fire broke out around 3 p.m. Sunday. She said she saw thick, black smoke starting to come by the door from the outside of the home.

"I grabbed my purse and went over to the sliding glass door, didn't grab any shoes, clothes, nothing," she said.

Westmoreland's husband uses an oxygen machine, so they and the other adults in the home got out as quickly as they could.

“It broke all the windows out of the house. We heard a big boom because there were two big oxygen tanks and an oxygen machine," she said.

The La Grange Fire Department said they responded to the call, alongside units from Ballardsville, North Oldham and Westport.

By the time they got the fire out, Westmoreland said it was a total loss.

Normally, there would have been even more people to rescue. Westmoreland said her three young grandchildren left for Louisville to watch the Pegasus Parade.

“They were upset, and I was glad they were gone because they didn’t see any flames when they came back," she said. “It’s like a nightmare, but something had told me let them go to the parade.”

The Red Cross helped them find a hotel to stay in, which Westmoreland said was a challenge because of bookings for the Kentucky Derby. Monday, one of her other top priorities was replacing prescriptions she and the family desperately need.

Some family members also returned to the home to find toys and other items that were outside and could be salvaged.

"If you didn't have family you wouldn't know what to do," Westmoreland said. "I do a lot, but I couldn't have done it all myself."

Now, the family will start looking for another place to live, ideally a house for their kids.

"I hate to take an apartment after they've had a house, because the kids like the yard, any kind of yard and any kind of house," Westmoreland said.

The La Grange Fire Department said the county arson team would be investigating the cause of the fire.

Westmoreland's granddaughter set up a gofundme to help support the family in replacing their belongings.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Parents and students say the new bus routes for Jefferson County Public Schools are a disaster. The district closed its schools Thursday and Friday to fix the errors in the transportation system.

What You Need To Know

An 11-year-old Westport Middle School student was even dropped off miles from his home.

Bradyen Tapp had the day off from school, so JCPS can fix the transportation issue. He spent his day off helping his dad landscaping with his dad.

“Yes, I was very scared. On the way home, I was confused. I was just flabbergasted,” Tapp, a 6th grader at Westport Middle School, said.

Brayden was supposed to be home at 4:25 p.m. from his first day but didn’t get home until after 5:10 p.m. because he says he was told to get on the wrong bus.

“Halfway through the day maybe fourth or fifth period I got my wristband that gave me the wrong bus number and it had my name on it, it was blue, so I trusted the school that they gave me the right wristband because I didn’t think they would have messed it up,” he said.

Brayden said he got on the bus and told the driver his stop and his driver said he knew where to go

“Where he dropped me off was between three and five miles from my house,” he said.

His dad, David, said Brayden texted him where he was and he picked him up.

“I was terrified. I was terrified. He was crying, I was crying. He had a migraine when he came home,” David said.

The 11-year-old’s father said he tried to call the school to figure out what happened and nobody took his call.

“Nobody answered the phone. I called twice and I end up leaving a message. It wasn’t a nice message by any means. Nobody would leave a message that’s nice after your son was dropped off three miles from your home. it’s ridiculous,” said David.

David is unsure if he is going to be putting his son back on the bus on Monday.

“I hope they get it together though you know kids got to go to school, so hopefully everything works out,” he said.

Brayden is not as excited to get back into the classroom.

Superintendent Marty Pollio released a video on Thursday morning apologizing for the transportation disaster. He says he hopes they can solve the issues over the next four days.
