“The staff at ABC has been wonderful! It's easy to reach them, they are responsive, respectful, and cheerful. This was the first step in getting outside assistance for our Mom and we were so impressed with how thorough the care was - the first helper checked to see that her home was safe and that she knew how to use her cell phone. We'd highly recommend using their in home care.”

“I just wanted express our thoughts about Mary, who was the caregiver for the weekend. We all thought she was wonderful!! I think her biggest strength is that she sees the work, needs little/to no direction, offers to take things out of our hands, and is a true-go-getter. For Billie, this type of help is great since she feels like she can take some time to rest and trust all is okay. Mary works hard and is also very patient. I really think Mary is a natural dealing with elderly. She is patient and kind! Anyway, what I wanted to ask is if Mary can be the consistent caregiver for the weekends. The other 4 caregivers that I have met are also very nice. We would like Mary as much as possible as she is punctual, and as I mentioned before, sees what needs doing. She is focused on what she can do to help. She doesnt just sit there next to Bill, she has eyes in the back of her head and goes the extra mile. Anything that needs to get done, she says no wait, let me do it if she hasnt already initiated it herself. She seems to have endless energy and never complained. I just felt compelled to drop you a this note to let you know how impressed we were with her. Thanks”

“Thank you so much for your kind , personalized service. My mother was always resistant to have someone come into her home to help care for her, but she is very, very pleased with Betsy. Not only does she have someone to keep her company and meet her physical needs—her kitchen is looking cleaner than I have seen it in a while. Thank you again. Your kind manner was reassuring to my mother and to me, and you have made the process of caring for my mother at home easy, and provided me with much needed relief so that I can actually return to work with a calm mind.”

“My mother was in need of help after she broke her hip at 101 years old. She refused to leave her home. Susan Oderwald took wonderful care of her. She found caregivers for her who treated her with kid gloves and she herself went above and beyond by getting papers signed, visiting her in the hospital and fetching things for her. I don't know what I would have done without her, since I live 3,000 miles away. I highly recommend her, her services and her staff of caregivers.”

lm-check

Home is where the heart is. While that saying can sound a tad cliche, it is especially true for many seniors living in America. When given a choice, older adults most often prefer to grow older at home. An AARP study found that three out of four adults over the age of 50 want to stay in their homes and communities as they age.

lm-check

When you begin to think about why, it makes sense. Home offers a sense of security, comfort, and familiarity.

lm-check

The truth is, as we age, we begin to rely on others for help. When a family is too busy or lives too far away to fulfill this role, in-home senior care is often the best solution. Home care services allow seniors to enjoy personal independence while also receiving trustworthy assistance from a trained caregiver.

lm-check

At Always Best Care, we offer a comprehensive range of home care services to help seniors stay healthy while they get the help they need to remain independent. As your senior loved one gets older, giving them the gift of senior care is one of the best ways to show your love, even if you live far away.

Respite Care

Respite Care Services

According to AARP, more than 53 million adults living in the U.S. provide care to someone over 50 years old. Unfortunately, these caregivers experience stress, exhaustion, and even depression. Our respite care services help family caregivers address urgent obligations, spend time with their children, and enjoy nearby activities. Perhaps more importantly, respite care gives family members time to recharge and regroup. Taking personal time to de-stress reduces the risk of caregiver burnout. Aging in Place: The Preferred Choice for Most Seniors

While it's true that some seniors have complicated medical needs that prevent them from staying at home, aging in place is often the best arrangement for seniors and their families. With a trusted caregiver, seniors have the opportunity to live with a sense of dignity and do so as they see fit - something that is unavailable to many older people today.

In-home care makes it possible for millions of seniors to age in place every year. Rather than moving to a strange nursing home, seniors have the chance to stay at home where they feel the happiest and most comfortable.

Here are just a few of the reasons why older men and women prefer to age at home:

How much does a senior's home truly mean to them?

A study published by the American Society on Aging found that more than half of seniors say their home's emotional value means more than how much their home is worth in monetary value. It stands to reason, then, that a senior's home is where they want to grow old.

With the help of elderly care in Derby, CT, seniors don't have to age in a sterilized care facility. Instead, they can age gracefully in the place they want to be most: their home. In contrast, seniors who move to a long-term care facility must adapt to new environments, new people, and new systems that the facility implements. At this stage in life, this kind of drastic change can be more harmful than helpful.

Institutional care facilities like nursing homes often put large groups of people together to live in one location. On any given day, dozens of staff members and caregivers run in and out of these facilities. Being around so many new people in a relatively small living environment can be dangerous for a seniors' health and wellbeing. When you consider that thousands of seniors passed away in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, opting for in-home care is often a safer, healthier choice for seniors.

Aging in place has been shown to improve seniors' quality of life, which helps boost physical health and also helps insulate them from viral and bacterial risks found in elderly living facilities.

For many seniors, the ability to live independently with assistance from a caregiver is a priceless option. With in-home care, seniors experience a higher level of independence and freedom - much more so than in other settings like a nursing home. When a senior has the chance to age in place, they get to live life on their own terms, inside the house that they helped make into a home. More independence means more control over their personal lives, too, which leads to increased levels of fulfillment, happiness, and personal gratification. Over time, these positive feelings can manifest into a healthier, longer life.

More independence, a healthier life, and increased comfort are only a few benefits of aging in place. You have to take into consideration the role of cost and convenience. Simply put, it's usually easier and more affordable to help seniors age in place than it is to move them into an institutional care facility. According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, seniors who age in the comfort of their homes can save thousands of dollars per month.

In-home care services from Always Best Care, for instance, are often less expensive than long-term solutions, which can cost upwards of six figures per year. To make matters worse, many residential care facilities are reluctant to accept long-term care insurance and other types of payment assistance.

With Always Best Care's home care services, seniors and their families have a greater level of control over their care plans. In-home care gives seniors the chance to form a bond with a trusted caregiver and also receive unmatched care that is catered to their needs. In long-term care facilities, seniors and their loved ones have much less control over their care plan and have less of a say in who provides their care.

Affordable Care

In-home care is a valuable resource that empowers seniors to age in place on their own terms. However, a big concern for many families and their loved ones is how much in-home care costs. If you're worried that in-home care is too expensive, you may be pleasantly surprised to learn that it is one of the most affordable senior care arrangements available.

Typically, hiring an Always Best Care in-home caregiver for a few hours a week is more affordable than sending your loved one to a long-term care facility. This is true even for seniors with more complex care needs.

At Always Best Care, we will work closely with you and your family to develop a Care Plan that not only meets your care needs, but your budget requirements, too. Once we discover the level of care that you or your senior need, we develop an in-home care plan that you can afford.

In addition to our flexible care options, families should also consider the following resources to help offset potential home care costs:

If your loved one qualifies, Medicaid may help reduce in-home care costs. Review your CT's Medicaid program laws and benefits, and make sure your senior's financial and medical needs meet Medicaid eligibility requirements.
Attendance and aid benefits through military service can cover a portion of the costs associated with in-home care for veterans and their spouses.
Many senior care services like in-home care are included in long-term care insurance options. Research different long-term care solutions to find a plan that provides coverage for senior care.
Home care can be included as part of a senior's private insurance plan. Read over your loved one's insurance policy carefully or speak with their insurance provider to determine if in-home care is covered.
Depending on the life insurance plan, you may be able to apply your policy toward long-term care. You may be able to use long-term-care coverage to help pay for in-home elderly care.

Compassionate Care. Trusted Caregivers.

When you or your senior loved one needs assistance managing daily tasks at home, finding a qualified caregiver can be challenging. It takes a special kind of person to provide reliable care for your senior loved one. However, a caregiver's role involves more than meal preparation and medication reminders. Many seniors rely on their caregivers for companionship, too.

Our companion care services give seniors the chance to socialize in a safe environment and engage in activities at home. These important efforts boost morale and provide much-needed relief from repetitive daily routines. A one-on-one, engaging conversation can sharpen seniors' minds and give them something in which to be excited.

At Always Best Care, we only hire care providers that we would trust to care for our own loved ones. Our senior caregivers in Derby, CT understand how important it is to listen and communicate with their seniors. A seemingly small interaction, like a short hug goodbye, can make a major difference in a senior's day. Instead of battling against feelings of isolation, seniors begin to look forward to seeing their caregiver each week.

Understanding the nuances of senior care is just one of the reasons why our care providers are so great at their job.

Unlike some senior care companies, our caregivers must undergo extensive training before they work for Always Best Care. In addition, our caregivers receive ongoing training throughout the year. This training ensures that their standard of care matches up to the high standards we've come to expect. During this training, they will brush up on their communication skills, safety awareness, and symptom spotting. That way, your loved one receives the highest level of non-medical home care from day one.

Assisted Living Referral Services

While it's true that many seniors prefer to age at home, sometimes in-home care isn't the best fit. For those seniors and their families, choosing an assisted living facility makes more sense. Unfortunately, finding the optimal care facility is easier said than done in today's day and age. That's when Always Best Care's assisted living referral services begin to make a lot of sense.

Assisted living is a form of housing intended for seniors who require varying degrees of medical and personal attention. Accommodations may include single rooms, apartments, or shared living arrangements. Assisted living communities are typically designed to resemble a home-like environment and are physically constructed to encourage the independence of residents.

Respite Care Derby, CT

At assisted living communities, seniors receive help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and eating. They may also benefit from coordination of services with outside healthcare providers, and monitoring of resident activities to ensure their health, safety, and well-being. Caregivers who work at assisted living communities can also provide medication administration and personal care services for older adults.

Other services offered within assisted living communities can include some or all of the following:

  • Housekeeping
  • Laundry
  • Recreational Activities
  • Social Outings
  • Emergency Medical Response
  • Medication Monitoring
  • Family Visitation
  • Personal Care
 Caregivers Derby, CT

At Always Best Care, our representatives can match your senior's emotional, physical, and financial needs with viable assisted living communities nearby. Results are based on comparative data, so you can select the best choice for you or your loved one.

Always Best Care works closely with local senior living communities to gain valuable knowledge that we then use to help seniors and their loved ones make informed decisions. This information can include basic care and rent, resident availability, and services provided. Because Always Best Care is compensated by these communities, we provide senior living referral services at no extra cost to you.

ENFIELD, CT — As eight of Major League Baseball's best young sluggers took the field Monday night at Truist Park in Atlanta for the annual home run derby, a former professional ballplayer from Enfield settled in front of his television and watched one of his favorite college teammates stand at center stage.

Brad Tweedlie, who was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in 1993 out of Western Carolina University and enjoyed a 7-year pro career, never played with any of the young guns swinging for the fences; in fact, when his playing days ended in 2000, two of the eight participants had not yet been born, and the oldest, Byron Buxton of the Minnesota Twins, was just six.

Tweedlie's interest was piqued by the appearance of Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh in the derby. The 235-pound switch-hitter entered the All-Star break with 38 home runs, just one shy of Barry Bonds' all-time record of 39 in 2001, when he wound up as the all-time single-season home run leader with 73.

Raleigh's pitcher for the derby was his dad, Todd, a former power-hitting catcher in his own right at Western Carolina. In 1991, as a senior, he batted .313 with 17 home runs and 78 runs batted in, leading the Catamounts to a 36-26 record. He later became head coach at his alma mater from 2000 through 2007, then helmed the Tennessee Volunteers baseball program from 2008 through 2011.

Tweedlie, who had recently graduated from Enfield High School, was a freshman pitcher on that 1991 squad, winning one game and saving another in 18 relief appearances. Raleigh's brother Matt was a junior third baseman that season, and eventually played pro ball for 10 seasons, including stints in the Montreal Expos, Baltimore Orioles, New York Mets, Colorado Rockies and Florida Marlins' organizations.

"Todd and his brother Matt were two of my favorite teammates ever," Tweedlie told Patch Tuesday morning. "Great players and better people."

Monday's big event was a true family affair for the Raleighs, as Cal's younger brother Matt Jr. was his dad's catcher. When the slugger affectionately known by his teammates as "Big Dumper" defeated Junior Caminero of the Tampa Bay Rays in the finals, he became the first catcher and first switch-hitter to win the competition outright. He also became the first Mariner to claim the title since 1999, when Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. won it for the third time.

Tweedlie said, "To see him out there throwing BP to his kid in derby was awesome, and to win it is unreal. I couldn't be happier for him and his family. Truly an amazing moment."

DERBY, CT — Discolored water was recently reported on the west side of Derby, and city officials said Tuesday they have contacted the Regional Water Authority about it.

In a Facebook post just before noon, city officials said they spent Monday "trying to get answers and communication regarding the discolored water on the west side of town."

According to the city, the South Central Connecticut Regional Water Authority generally notifies impacted customers directly when there are water issues.

"In this case, they did not," the post reads. "We have asked them to do so to keep residents informed."

The city also shared a message it received Monday evening from RWA that encouraged customers who are still experiencing discolored water to "run cold water taps for about 10 minutes to clear any discolored water that may remain in their plumbing. If the problem persists, of course, they should call us."

The message shared by the city also noted discolored water is not usually a health concern for most people, however it is unappealing and RWA advises against using it for drinking or washing clothes until it runs clear.

In an email to Patch, an RWA spokesperson said Tuesday afternoon the water utility company became aware of the discolored water in the system Sunday and had crews in the area to flush the mains Sunday and Monday.

"While we are not sure what caused this specific issue, discolored water is usually caused by mineral sediment in the pipes that gets temporarily stirred up by construction, unauthorized hydrant use or heavy demand," the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson said demands were not high over the weekend and the company was not aware of any construction in the area.

The spokesperson also noted the company's first priority is always to address the issue at hand and ensure the safety and well-being of the community.

"We understand the concerns raised by city officials in Derby, and we take them seriously," the spokesperson said. "In this case, there was a breakdown in communication. Sometimes our field professionals, who are focused on resolving the situation as quickly and safely as possible, do not relay conditions back to the office as promptly as we would like. That can unfortunately delay our ability to notify local officials in real time. We are reviewing our internal processes to ensure better coordination and more timely communication moving forward."

In a follow up Facebook post Tuesday evening, city officials said Chief of Staff Linda Fusco spoke with a senior communications specialist for RWA late Tuesday afternoon due to continuing reports of discolored water, as well as sediment, in some areas of the city, particularly the area of Hawthorne Avenue from Silver Hill Road to Sixth Street.

According to the city, RWA provided the following suggestions for residents:

The city also noted it does not provide water service, which is provided to the vast majority of Derby residents by RWA.

SHELTON, Conn. — A section of Route 8 in Connecticut is currently under repair.

Crews are making improvements to the the Commodore Hull Bridge, which connects Shelton and Derby over the Housatonic River.

State inspectors say they found that some parts of the bridge are beginning to deteriorate.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation's Director of Communications Josh Morgan said Wednesday that inspectors were looking at the bridge, in preparation for a future project, when they noticed concerning issues with its structure.

Morgan noted that the deterioration was observed on the gusset plates under the bridge.

“Pieces of plate material that are holding some of the support structure together, which is overall a component of the bridge, which is supporting the weight of the bridge, plus all the vehicles, which are traveling in the bridge,” said Morgan.

Once officials learned of the deterioration, CTDOT signed an emergency declaration to quickly hire contractors to begin working on the project.

“What they're actually out doing now this week is they're milling off the pavement, about three or four inches. Take some of that weight off the road, and then they’ll be able to get underneath the bridge and start doing the repairs to those gusset plates,” Morgan added.

According to Morgan, the bridge is still safe for travel. However, CTDOT has implemented a 32-ton weight restriction on the bridge to avoid putting any additional stress on it.

The bridge will still be open for travel, but different lanes will be closed during different phases of the project.

Dylan Witkowski, a local resident, says this section of Route 8 often sees a lot of traffic.

He thinks the construction could cause long lines on the bridge.

“Summer is when most people have their travel plans, so on top of just the typical work commute and what not, there going to be a lot more people on the road. Especially with holiday weekends, Fourth of July, so, hopefully, they wrap it up quick,” said Witkowski.

Morgan said the construction project officially began on Tuesday.

Chris Masulli says while traffic will be difficult to manage, he’s thankful CTDOT is being proactive with the repair project.

“People are going to be mad about the extended commute, but at the same time, it’s good that they’re keeping up with things and keeping things maintained properly," said Masulli.

Morgan said it’s too soon to give a timeframe as to when the work will be finished, but CTDOT officials expect construction to continue at least through this month.

The Commadore Hull Bridge, a section of Route 8 that connects Shelton and Derby, is getting repairs after a discovery was made by inspectors with the Connecticut Department of Transportation.

The DOT makes clear the bridge is safe for travel.

In a statement, the DOT said during a special inspection ahead of scheduled work, inspectors noticed further deterioration of “gusset plates” under the bridge. They are described as the mechanism holding the trusses of the bridge together which support the weight of the bridge and traffic traveling overhead.

“If there was any concern with the bridge as it is today, they would have for sure closed the bridge all together,” Professor Arash Zaghi with UConn’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering said.

He said in his experience working with DOT, they often take the conservative approach to safety, so he believes they are taking the necessary steps to ensure safe travel despite the needed fix.

Upon the discovery, the department initiated an emergency declaration so they could begin work immediately.

It's a necessary step, according to Zaghi.

“For these types of systems, we don’t get long warning,” he said. “They need to act fast when they determine any sort of problem because they don’t get much time.”

But that isn’t cause for concern, considering how fast they moved on this issue. He again reiterated his experience working with DOT, and their approach to safety when it comes to the state’s infrastructure.

DOT has placed a 32-ton weight limit on the bridge for the time being while repairs occur and are implementing lane shifts to keep weight off the trouble spots.

They reiterated in their statement, “The bridge remains safe for the traveling public.”

Work is set to begin immediately and will occur overnight from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. There is no timetable for the work at this point.

DOT noted they will update the timeline and note any changes as they come.

The on-ramps to the bridge on the northbound side may be shut down at points during repairs.

For those that use the bridge frequently, they appreciate a quick response to a discovered problem.

“It’s a great relief to know they are being proactive there, that’s right where I get off my exit there,” Linda Bray, who works in Shelton, said.

She said she spends a decent amount of time on the roads down in this part of the state. She is grateful a problem was discovered fast, and a fix is imminent.

“It’s worth a little bit of annoyance for a while,” she said.

DOT is also reminding drivers to slow down and move over when inside a work zone, or if there are any vehicles or crews on the side of the road.
