“After years of refusing In-home Care due to cost, My dad finally agreed to try Always Best Care to take him to see his doctors. At 95, my dad is not an easy person to get along with let alone for a stranger to be with him for a few hours and transporting him, with his walker, to and from the hospital. My dad just called and he is thrilled with his caretaker Madeleine for her kind attitude and helpfulness. I'm relieved that he has found a trusted person that can take him to see his doctors.I began talking to Ernel, the manager, about two months ago regarding this type of service for my dad and we stayed in touch. Ernel was always friendly and professional and was able to get Madeleine for my dad in very short notice. Tita, the administrator, followed up with all the contracts and statements and I'm now enrolled into their online system. Overall, the 5 star rating is well deserved. Aging is not fun. Watching my dad struggle with his daily routine is difficult. Having good people around like Always Best makes it a bit easier for the both of us. Thank you.”

“My aunt has been living in a nursing home for the last five years. In the last year however, we have seen her health and cognitive abilities slowly decline. A social worker asked us to seek extra help from a home care agency to provide additional caregivers due to her growing needs. They provided our family with some options, but in the end, highly recommended Always Best Care. We asked other residents in the facility who were also using ABC, and they too recommended the agency . My aunt has been so pleased with her caregivers and we appreciate the entire staff at ABC. Their communication is outstanding, caregivers are compassionate and reliable and they always go out of their way to accommodate our changing needs. I highly recommend Always Best Care.”

lm-check

Home is where the heart is. While that saying can sound a tad cliche, it is especially true for many seniors living in America. When you begin to think about why, it makes sense. Home offers a sense of security, comfort, and familiarity.

The truth is, as we age, we begin to rely on others for help. When a family is too busy or lives too far away to fulfill this role, in-home senior care is often the best solution. Home care services allow seniors to enjoy personal independence while also receiving trustworthy assistance from a trained caregiver.

lm-check

Aging in Place: The Preferred Choice for Most Seniors

While it's true that some seniors have complicated medical needs that prevent them from staying at home, aging in place is often the best arrangement for seniors and their families. With a trusted caregiver, seniors have the opportunity to live with a sense of dignity and do so as they see fit - something that is unavailable to many older people today.

In-home care makes it possible for millions of seniors to age in place every year. Rather than moving to a strange nursing home, seniors have the chance to stay at home where they feel the happiest and most comfortable.

Here are just a few of the reasons why older men and women prefer to age at home:

How much does a senior's home truly mean to them?

A study published by the American Society on Aging found that more than half of seniors say their home's emotional value means more than how much their home is worth in monetary value. It stands to reason, then, that a senior's home is where they want to grow old.

With the help of elderly care in Kahuku, HI, seniors don't have to age in a sterilized care facility. Instead, they can age gracefully in the place they want to be most: their home. In contrast, seniors who move to a long-term care facility must adapt to new environments, new people, and new systems that the facility implements. At this stage in life, this kind of drastic change can be more harmful than helpful.

Institutional care facilities like nursing homes often put large groups of people together to live in one location. On any given day, dozens of staff members and caregivers run in and out of these facilities. Being around so many new people in a relatively small living environment can be dangerous for a seniors' health and wellbeing. When you consider that thousands of seniors passed away in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, opting for in-home care is often a safer, healthier choice for seniors.

Aging in place has been shown to improve seniors' quality of life, which helps boost physical health and also helps insulate them from viral and bacterial risks found in elderly living facilities.

For many seniors, the ability to live independently with assistance from a caregiver is a priceless option. With in-home care, seniors experience a higher level of independence and freedom - much more so than in other settings like a nursing home. When a senior has the chance to age in place, they get to live life on their own terms, inside the house that they helped make into a home. More independence means more control over their personal lives, too, which leads to increased levels of fulfillment, happiness, and personal gratification. Over time, these positive feelings can manifest into a healthier, longer life.

More independence, a healthier life, and increased comfort are only a few benefits of aging in place. You have to take into consideration the role of cost and convenience. Simply put, it's usually easier and more affordable to help seniors age in place than it is to move them into an institutional care facility. According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, seniors who age in the comfort of their homes can save thousands of dollars per month.

In-home care services from Always Best Care, for instance, are often less expensive than long-term solutions, which can cost upwards of six figures per year. To make matters worse, many residential care facilities are reluctant to accept long-term care insurance and other types of payment assistance.

With Always Best Care's home care services, seniors and their families have a greater level of control over their care plans. In-home care gives seniors the chance to form a bond with a trusted caregiver and also receive unmatched care that is catered to their needs. In long-term care facilities, seniors and their loved ones have much less control over their care plan and have less of a say in who provides their care.

Affordable Care

In-home care is a valuable resource that empowers seniors to age in place on their own terms. However, a big concern for many families and their loved ones is how much in-home care costs. If you're worried that in-home care is too expensive, you may be pleasantly surprised to learn that it is one of the most affordable senior care arrangements available.

Typically, hiring an Always Best Care in-home caregiver for a few hours a week is more affordable than sending your loved one to a long-term care facility. This is true even for seniors with more complex care needs.

At Always Best Care, we will work closely with you and your family to develop a Care Plan that not only meets your care needs, but your budget requirements, too. Once we discover the level of care that you or your senior need, we develop an in-home care plan that you can afford.

In addition to our flexible care options, families should also consider the following resources to help offset potential home care costs:

If your loved one qualifies, Medicaid may help reduce in-home care costs. Review your HI's Medicaid program laws and benefits, and make sure your senior's financial and medical needs meet Medicaid eligibility requirements.
Attendance and aid benefits through military service can cover a portion of the costs associated with in-home care for veterans and their spouses.
Many senior care services like in-home care are included in long-term care insurance options. Research different long-term care solutions to find a plan that provides coverage for senior care.
Home care can be included as part of a senior's private insurance plan. Read over your loved one's insurance policy carefully or speak with their insurance provider to determine if in-home care is covered.
Depending on the life insurance plan, you may be able to apply your policy toward long-term care. You may be able to use long-term-care coverage to help pay for in-home elderly care.

Compassionate Care. Trusted Caregivers.

When you or your senior loved one needs assistance managing daily tasks at home, finding a qualified caregiver can be challenging. It takes a special kind of person to provide reliable care for your senior loved one. However, a caregiver's role involves more than meal preparation and medication reminders. Many seniors rely on their caregivers for companionship, too.

Our companion care services give seniors the chance to socialize in a safe environment and engage in activities at home. These important efforts boost morale and provide much-needed relief from repetitive daily routines. A one-on-one, engaging conversation can sharpen seniors' minds and give them something in which to be excited.

At Always Best Care, we only hire care providers that we would trust to care for our own loved ones. Our senior caregivers in Kahuku, HI understand how important it is to listen and communicate with their seniors. A seemingly small interaction, like a short hug goodbye, can make a major difference in a senior's day. Instead of battling against feelings of isolation, seniors begin to look forward to seeing their caregiver each week.

Understanding the nuances of senior care is just one of the reasons why our care providers are so great at their job.

Unlike some senior care companies, our caregivers must undergo extensive training before they work for Always Best Care. In addition, our caregivers receive ongoing training throughout the year. This training ensures that their standard of care matches up to the high standards we've come to expect. During this training, they will brush up on their communication skills, safety awareness, and symptom spotting. That way, your loved one receives the highest level of non-medical home care from day one.

Assisted Living Referral Services

While it's true that many seniors prefer to age at home, sometimes in-home care isn't the best fit. For those seniors and their families, choosing an assisted living facility makes more sense. Unfortunately, finding the optimal care facility is easier said than done in today's day and age. That's when Always Best Care's assisted living referral services begin to make a lot of sense.

Assisted living is a form of housing intended for seniors who require varying degrees of medical and personal attention. Accommodations may include single rooms, apartments, or shared living arrangements. Assisted living communities are typically designed to resemble a home-like environment and are physically constructed to encourage the independence of residents.

Respite Care Kahuku, HI

At assisted living communities, seniors receive help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and eating. They may also benefit from coordination of services with outside healthcare providers, and monitoring of resident activities to ensure their health, safety, and well-being. Other services offered within assisted living communities can include some or all of the following:

  • Housekeeping

MILILANI, Hawaii — There might've been a moment that Darren Johnson allowed himself to think the title window was bolted shut with the loss of a transcendent player. His plucky Campbell Sabers refused to believe it, and good thing, too — now they are within one good game of winning the whole thing.

In an all-time prep football stunner, Campbell came from behind to defeat top-seeded Kahuku 15-12 in the final seconds of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Open Division semifinals at John Kauinana Stadium on Friday night.

Oahu Interscholastic Association standard-bearer Kahuku, an 11-time state champion from Oahu's North Shore accustomed to getting its way in annual matchups with its little brother from Ewa Beach, claimed a 6-0 halftime lead but yielded two second-half touchdowns to Sabers star senior athlete Tainoa Lave, including the dramatic winner with 2 seconds left.

TAINOA LAVE TO THE RIGHT PYLON 2 SECONDS LEFT. TOUCHDOWN CAMPBELL, 2PT IS GOOD. CAMPBELL LEADS KAHUKU 15-12 @OC16Sports pic.twitter.com/Xizx62R3gi

— Brian McInnis (@Brian_McInnis) November 22, 2025

"Of all the teams I have, this team really believed that they was gonna win," said the man known in the prep circuit as "D.J."

"They were giving me that belief all week. I seen good practices. They stayed the course and they followed it."

The bombshell of an outcome only added to a chaotic year in Hawaii prep football. Defending state Open champion Saint Louis was knocked out in Interscholastic League of Honolulu play on a dramatic upset by Punahou, giving Kamehameha the ILH title. Friday marked the first time that the No. 1 Open seed failed to make the championship game since the division was added at the state level in 2016.

Campbell (8-3) will face second-seeded Kamehameha (5-4), which defeated Kapolei 31-10 in Friday's second semifinal, at the University of Hawaii’s Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex on Dec. 5.

Johnson went into the day 0-5 in state semifinals with Campbell, and 0-7 including his time leading Kailua and Kaimuki. The Sabers were considered a true contender last year with star quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele, but the Hawaii high school career passing yardage record-holder and future Cal starting signal-caller was injured in a semifinal battle with Saint Louis. The distraught Sabers couldn't recover in the moment.

Was there hope that the next year could bring something better? Somehow, yes.

"Of course a window passes every time he leaves. It's something great for somebody," Johnson said of Sagapolutele. "But I think the kids believed in themselves that they could win and they could do great things, just like Jaron playing (at Cal) as a true freshman. You just gotta believe."

Johnson stoked some fire in his players during the week by telling them that Kahuku already had the Dec. 5 championship game arrangements booked on its calendar, according to Lave.

"We took that to the heart and came out and did Campbell football," Lave said. "We're the underdogs always, so we play with a chip on our shoulder."

Campbell’s lone state football championship came in 2004 in Division II under Tumoana Kenessey. Not only have the Sabers not won at the top level, but this year's team had to make do with all road games this season, as their home stadium is under extensive renovation.

On the game’s decisive drive with the Sabers trailing 12-7, Campbell quarterback Brayden Medeiros found Zayne Pasion on a pass to the left flat to get into the red zone, causing nearby Kapolei players, waiting their turn for the field, to smile and cheer. After the Sabers burned their final timeout, Brystin Sansano took a handoff and also went around the left edge. He advanced it to the 2 and the seconds ticked down.

The Sabers spiked it on third down with 10 seconds left.

Johnson was all too aware of what happened to Kapolei against Kahuku in the OIA final. The Hurricanes got within inches of the winning touchdown but the game clock expired when a run was stuffed at the goal line.

"All that stuff haunts you," Johnson said. "We finished it right, with Tainoa running the option play. If we got him to the corner we knew he could beat their guys to it."

Lave took the direct snap and bolted to the right on an option play. He was just able to beat the Red Raiders to the pylon with a final leap, and the Sabers sideline and stands erupted. Sansano added a successful 2-point run to make it a three-point game.

"I just trusted my speed and beat the defense to the corner of the end zone," Lave said. "I think I could've run faster, but all praise and glory to God for getting us that close to punch it in."

Said senior quarterback Brayden Medeiros, "He's been here four years, he's started all four years. He's a dog. He's one of the best players in the state and he's truly a leader out there."

Medeiros was thrust into an unexpected role last year when Sagapolutele got hurt, and went through some growing pains early this season, his first as a starter.

"This means a lot to me," said Medeiros, who was 11-for-14 passing for 87 yards. "Through all the adversity we faced this year, plenty people doubted us, doubted we would be here. ... But we just trusted each other, trusted the team, trusted our players and coaches. We work hard and we push through adversity every day."

Kahuku tried a handful of laterals on the ensuing short kickoff by Campbell but couldn’t advance past midfield. After some chaos, fumbling for the ball and some premature celebration, penalty flags flew and it appeared the Red Raiders (8-4) might get an untimed down. But the officials conferred and the game was called over.

More wild celebration ensued.

Kahuku interim coach Nihoa Pule, a defensive coordinator who accepted the head job on an interim basis once Sterling Carvalho was fired by the school in the preseason, calmly led the Red Raiders in the handshake line once emotions had settled. He greeted Johnson with a congratulatory hug.

"Just take it in stride, right?" Pule said of how he managed the season. "Keeping the main thing the main thing, which is these kids, and keeping them happy. A lot of them, they came out of their shells this year."

Red Raiders senior Troy Mariteragi, who replaced Matai Fuiava as the starting quarterback at midseason and led the Red Raiders to their 31st OIA title, found Kea Lerner for a 19-yard touchdown in the second quarter. Toa Sam scored Kahuku’s other touchdown on a 20-yard run with 5:22 to play in the game.

Kahuku, known for its reliable kicking game this season with Campbell transfer Jadyn Parker, had a botched field goal hold, leading to a shanked kick, and also missed an extra point try. Its 2-point conversion try on its second touchdown was stuffed.

Pule said he and his staff were well aware of Lave's capabilities.

"He's a dynamic kid. Dynamic," Pule said. "And we knew he's going to get in the game, and we tried to do some things, but it's a little too late."

Campbell overcame a couple of costly penalties in the first half — an encroachment that kept a stalled Kahuku drive alive, and a false start that prevented the Sabers from going for it from just inside Kahuku territory.

"We just had to flush it," Lave said of the mistakes. "Don't worry about it and get to the next play, and that's what we did."

Campbell lost 24-6 to Kahuku in the OIA semifinals but rallied to defeat Mililani 14-10 in the league’s third-place game to claim the OIA’s third and final state berth.

It is the first time since 2018 that Kahuku failed to reach a state championship game. The last time neither Saint Louis nor Kahuku were in the state's top-tier championship game was in 2014, when Mililani beat Punahou in Division I.

MILILANI, Hawaii (Island News) -- Fans erupted in excitement after a nail-biting semifinal championship matchup between Campbell and Kahuku, a stage Campbell High School knows well.

Darren "DJ" Johnson, head coach of Campbell High School, said, "It's just a great victory, great victory."

Tainoa Lave, safety for Campbell football, said, "We find ourselves here every year… just that feeling of always losing and coming up short. It hurts a lot. We have another chance, especially for my senior year to finish it off with a win."

But this year, they didn't come up short.

With two seconds on the clock — fans on the edge of their seats — a two-point conversion seals the win for Campbell.

Water flies through the air as the team celebrates a victory that sends them to the finals.

"I'm just very proud of the kids, the coaches, the crowd… they stand behind you. We put ourselves in a good situation to get the crowd behind us. Hats off to everybody," said Johnson

It's a first in school history.

Johnson said, "They believed in themselves. They came forward tonight and played good football"

After a devastating loss to St. Louis last year on this exact field, this team has rewritten their story, but it's far from over.

"This whole season we've been the underdogs. A lot of young guys coming up from JV. It showcases the hard work we put in as a team to reach this point. No better team to make a championship than us," said Lave.

"We don't know who we play yet, but we're in there. We'll enjoy the win, then prepare, whether it's Kamehameha or Kapolei. One of them's going to be a dogfight," said Johnson.

Campbell will take the field on Dec. 5th at the University of Hawai'i at M?noa.

But tonight, they celebrate.

"The kids are going to enjoy Ewa Beach, and I'm going to enjoy my ride home and probably enjoy it more tomorrow watching college football," said Johnson.

HONOLULU — Kahuku refused to let a missed opportunity define its story Wednesday night.

The Red Raiders had a chance to seize the early lead its Oahu Interscholastic Association East Division rival, the Moanalua Na Menehine, in the girls volleyball league championship match on Wednesday night. But they could not make their advantage in the final points of Set 1 stand up.

Kahuku stood tall when it mattered in a 24-26, 25-20, 24-26, 25-19, 15-12 epic at Na Menehune’s gym. Earlier, Roosevelt outlasted Leilehua for the Division II title in another five-setter.

The Red Raiders jumped out 10-5 in Set 5, but where Moanalua rallied earlier in the match, Kahuku slammed the door shut. From 10-all, Ana Kaufusi put down two of her match-high 12 blocks, and Lamona Lauhingoa, Makamae Schilling and Talia Soliai-Tui put down kills as Kahuku attained a record 16th OIA title and its third in the last five years.

Kaufusi had five solo stuffs, including one against Moanalua’s go-to hitter, the 6-foot-5 Surfia Grounds, in the final points.

“Our defense needed help, so our coach (Lesina Manutai) was telling us I need to get up and block in, so I was like, ‘OK, block party, let’s go,’” Kaufusi told Spectrum OC16’s Jimmy Bender.

Behind her, the Red Raiders outblocked Na Menehune 17-6.

“When I went up to go block the hitters, I thought, ‘just block them,’ like no mercy on them,” Kaufusi said.

The Red Raiders were assigned the No. 2 seed in the 12-team HHSAA Division I tournament bracket announced after the game. Interscholastic League of Honolulu champ Iolani was No. 1, BIIF champ Kamehameha-Hawaii was No. 3 and MIL champ Kamehameha-Maui was No. 4.

State play begins Oct. 27.

Kahuku (12-1) took its only loss to Moanalua (11-2) as the teams split their matches home and home in the OIA East season.

In the final, the Red Raiders absorbed a heavy dose of Grounds at the left pin. Grounds put down a match-high 20 kills on 74 swings (.149) for Na Menehune coach Alan Cabanting.

Schilling tallied 14 kills for Kahuku while Elenoa Lauhingoa and Soliai-Tui added 11 apiece.

Rough Riders recover from rough start for D-II title

Roosevelt gave up the first 18 points of its Division II championship match against Leilehua, but it was the Rough Riders who had the last word in an 8-25, 26-24, 25-17, 25-27, 15-4 marathon with the Mules.

Kaycie Garnett helped Roosevelt shake off the early haymaker with 18 kills, 24 digs and seven service aces.

“During practice, we always told ourselves we need to fight hard. And this team individually, everybody’s super competitive and everyone has it in them to fight back,” Garnett told Bender.

It was Roosevelt’s sixth all-time OIA title and first since going back-to-back in 2010 and 2011. Impressively, the Rough Riders (10-1) did it while playing a full road schedule this season as their new on-campus gym underwent construction.

Leilehua (9-2) won the battle at the net, 8-3 in blocks, but Roosevelt swung the match at the service line. Alana Lewis floated a ball just over the net for her third ace to clinch the match.

Roosevelt had 14 service aces to Leilehua’s six.

Cali Moniz-Kealoha led Leilehua with 16 kills.

MILILANI, Hawaii — Troy Mariteragi knows a thing or two about waiting a turn or two.

The patience of the one-time Kahuku waterboy was on full display Friday night as the senior quarterback guided the top-seeded Red Raiders to a 24-6 win over Campbell in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Open Division semifinals at John Kauinana Stadium.

In the second semifinal, third-seeded Kapolei upset second-seeded host Mililani, 21-14, as the Hurricanes reached their first OIA Open championship game.

Kahuku and Kapolei clinched HHSAA berths while Campbell and Mililani will play off for the third and final berth.

[Note: See below for more photos of the OIA Open football semifinals.]

Mariteragi hails from a proud family of Red Raider supporters on Oahu’s North Shore. His older brother, Jason, was the starting quarterback who helped lead Kahuku to the 2021 state championship, snapping a run of Saint Louis dominance.

“He’s a huge inspiration,” Troy Mariteragi said. “I was fortunate enough to be the waterboy on that team when they won the state championship and my brother was the starting quarterback. It just gives me extra motivation and inspiration that I’m carrying on my family’s legacy.”

He took a winding path to do it.

Mariteragi was the projected starting signal-caller entering the 2024 season but was eventually supplanted by touted mid-year mainland transfer Matai Fuiaga. Fuiaga and Kahuku lost to Saint Louis in last year’s state open final, but Fuiaga remained the starter entering this season.

The Red Raiders — fresh off offseason coaching upheaval with Kahuku’s dismissal of Sterling Carvalho — absorbed a 20-0 loss to Saint Louis in the 2025 opener.

Fuiaga reportedly left the program amid injury in September and Mariteragi made his first start of the season at Mater Dei (Calif.) on Sept. 5, a competitive 21-18 loss against a national power.

The Red Raiders (7-3) have not lost in five games since.

“We had some adversity, and adversity’s great,” Mariteragi said. “It shows us who we really are and it’s just building off that adversity and getting better every week.”

After a layoff of a few weeks, things got off to an inauspicious start Friday for the 30-time OIA champs.

Mariteragi was dropped by Campbell lineman Tevita Paongo on the Red Raiders’ opening possession and Kahuku was forced to punt. But under pressure on his team’s next drove, Mariteragi waited until he was about to be leveled by lineman Chaesten Eliu and flung it to a completely wide-open Christian Sanford-Tupuola along the right sideline for a 79-yard catch-and-run touchdown.

“That play, it was a huge turning point for us,” Mariteragi said. “Our first drive, we started a little slow and had to shake off the rust. I felt some pressure, had to get the ball out and my receiver made a play like they always do.”

So began a run of 24 unanswered points. Mariteragi was 10-for-18 for 142 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.

He helped seal the outcome with an 11-yard fade to tight end Rhino Aumua with under 5 minutes to play.

“Troy’s a veteran,” interim coach Nihoa Pule said. “So we expect a lot of things out of him and he’s leading this team the way we knew Troy could.”

Pule said it was not a matter of Mariteragi winning over the team — he already had them — but getting his chance and making good on it.

“Last year I had some opportunities and I was able to play in some games,” Mariteragi acknowledged. “Just getting as much experience as I can. The more experience, the more I can learn from and get better.”

He got some significant help from the Kahuku defense, which pitched a shutout after allowing a highlight 20-yard touchdown grab in the back of the end zone by the talented two-way Saber Shaison Kupukaa on Campbell’s first drive.

Defensive back Taimua Pule, the son of the coach, returned an interception of Sabers quarterback Brayden Medeiros 40 yards to the house early in the third quarter. Medeiros, the successor to Cal QB Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele, was 14-for-28 for 115 yards, a touchdown and two picks for Campbell (6-3).

Special teams came through, too. Jadyn Parker nailed a 52-yarder with room to spare at the start of the fourth quarter, the longest conversion in Hawaii high school football this year and 6 yards shy of matching the state record, per Spectrum OC16's Felipe Ojastro. In addition, Noah Ah You blocked the extra point the lone time Campbell found the end zone.

“It’s been interesting. Defense has stayed solid for the most part,” Pule said of the season's rhythms. “Our offense is slowly coming along. Hopefully we’ll keep on that rise right now.”

The teams did not complete an official game Oct. 18 because of a power outage at Kahuku’s Carleton Weimer Field. They agreed to forego the game altogether with their seeds locked in at 1 and 4 for the playoffs.
