Home Care In Ashton, MD

Home Care Ashton, MD

They say that your golden years are the best years of your life. For most older Americans, that's how it should be - a time to relax, reflect, and live life in a familiar place. After all, senior citizens in the U.S. have worked tirelessly to build a better economy, serve their communities, and raise families.

However, as seniors grow older, completing daily tasks like showering and enjoying activities such as visiting the historic Ashton gets harder without someone by their side. Unfortunately, many older Americans aren't able to rely on their adult children for help. The reality in today's world is that family members do not have the skills or time to dedicate to caring for their parents. That's where Always Best Care Senior Services comes in.

Our in-home care services are for people who prefer to stay at home as they grow older but need ongoing care that family or friends cannot provide. More and more older adults prefer to live far away from long-term, institutionalized facilities and closer to the place where they feel most comfortable - their home. Home care in Ashton, MD is a safe, effective way to give your loved ones the care they need when they need it the most.

“My grandmother needed to go to a skilled nursing facility from the hospital. She was scared and we wanted to ensure that she was well taken care of, so we arranged for caregivers there. She went home with 24 hour care. ABC made that process so easy and they were so kind. My grandmother found her caregivers to be dependable, courteous, helpful, compassionate and punctual. She wanted to personally thank Anne Marie Njang, Celestina, and Akosua Atta for being there for her.”

“We were very pleased with Always Best Care (ABC). We used ABC following a major surgery. We needed a CNA for various types of assistance for two people with limited mobility. Our original plan for help, with a different agency, fell apart early in my recovery. ABC had an excellent replacement in our home within 24 hours. The woman who provided most of our care was very good. Based on both responsiveness and quality, we would call ABC first if we need in home care in the future.”

“We used ABCSS for my Dad. When Mom needed similar care, they were the first we called. The need happened very quickly and ABCSS was able to find us a 24/7 sitter for the first night when we called them. They provide caregivers who indeed care about those they serve. Robin and Ashley (owners) are very attentive to our needs and are always looking for ways they can make things easier for us while caring for our loved ones. Highly recommend.”

“At a time when you need help the most. When you don't know what to expect next, other the expectation to be overwhelmed, Always Best Care was a great choice for help when I needed it the most in caring for my elder Father. I was out of my element and really didn't know what to do to properly care for my Father - but Always Best Care knew exactly what to do. When we first contacted Robin she responded immediately, met with us very quickly and was ready to go with as much staffing & care that we needed on Day 1. The caregivers were all experienced and personable, and genuinely nice people. When the time came that we had to shift to Hospice care, the staff already knew what to do with regard to interacting with the Hospice staff. And when the time came that my Father passed away they made sure we were notified immediately and remained with my Father until we arrived. I couldn't have asked for a level of service beyond what we received and I thank Robin and her staff for helping my Father and our family during his final weeks of life so that we could make him as comfortable as possible.”

“My mother received services from ABC for about 2 years. I reached out to Robin (head of the agency) because Mom was struggling with her memory and other symptoms of dementia. Always Best Care has wonderful caregivers and the staff was always available, kind, hard working and helpful. This refers to not only the caregivers, but their staff of nurses, doctors, receptionists, everyone. I could (and did) call day or in the middle of the night, and someone was always available to help me with my mom's issues. The caregivers were prompt, professional, hard working and really patient and kind. My mom passed away last month with Advanced Alzheimer's disease. I feel good really about the final years of my mom's life, at home with all she loved most, and that includes all that Always Best Care has to offer.”

The work makes me focus on small details that can make important differences in the lives of the people I assist. When you work with people who are sick, injured, or aged, you feel their frustration, and it makes you more compassionate. Sometimes you can help them overcome that frustration, and then you share their relief and happiness. “I moved my parents, who have dementia, from a large retirement community to a group home. When I realized that the group home did not provide proper care for them, which resulted in both parents coming down with urinary tract infections simultaneously, 2 times in three weeks, I knew they needed to move. My father’s dementia had also escalated significantly and he became fearful of the caregivers, who had no prior experience caring for someone with advanced Alzheimer’s symptoms and their approach was not appropriate. ABC came to my rescue and immediately provided a wonderful male caregiver for my father from 4-8 PM, seven days a week, while she conducted a search to find the right place for my parents to move. She took into consideration our family’s financial limitations as well. Within a short period of time, we were able to move them to their current location where they are getting wonderful care, delicious food and ongoing bus excursions every other week! My father is no longer fearful of the caregivers and my mother is very content, as well. They have had no further urinary tract problems. ABC solved 2 challenges for me: 1) they immediately found the right caregiver for my father and 2) found the perfect location for my parents to be cared for properly. What is Non-Medical Senior Care in Ashton, MD?

lm-check

Home is where the heart is. While that saying can sound a tad cliche, it is especially true for many seniors living in America. When given a choice, older adults most often prefer to grow older at home. An AARP study found that three out of four adults over the age of 50 want to stay in their homes and communities as they age.

lm-check

When you begin to think about why, it makes sense. Home offers a sense of security, comfort, and familiarity.

lm-check

The truth is, as we age, we begin to rely on others for help. When a family is too busy or lives too far away to fulfill this role, in-home senior care is often the best solution. Home care services allow seniors to enjoy personal independence while also receiving trustworthy assistance from a trained caregiver.

lm-check

At Always Best Care, we offer a comprehensive range of home care services to help seniors stay healthy while they get the help they need to remain independent. As your senior loved one gets older, giving them the gift of senior care is one of the best ways to show your love, even if you live far away.

Respite Care

Respite Care Services

According to AARP, more than 53 million adults living in the U.S. provide care to someone over 50 years old. Unfortunately, these caregivers experience stress, exhaustion, and even depression. Our respite care services help family caregivers address urgent obligations, spend time with their children, and enjoy nearby activities. Perhaps more importantly, respite care gives family members time to recharge and regroup. Taking personal time to de-stress reduces the risk of caregiver burnout. So, if you've always wanted to eat at the local Dempsey's of Ashton or visit Ashton-Sandy Spring, don't feel bad. Doing so is great for both you and your loved one.

At the end of the day, our goal is to become a valuable part of your senior's daily routine. That way, we may help give them the highest quality of life possible. We know that staying at home is important for your loved one, and we are here to help make sure that is possible.

If you have been on the fence about non-medical home care, there has never been a better time than now to give your senior the care, assistance, and companionship they deserve.

Aging in Place: The Preferred Choice for Most Seniors

While it's true that some seniors have complicated medical needs that prevent them from staying at home, aging in place is often the best arrangement for seniors and their families. With a trusted caregiver, seniors have the opportunity to live with a sense of dignity and do so as they see fit - something that is unavailable to many older people today.

In-home care makes it possible for millions of seniors to age in place every year. Rather than moving to a strange nursing home, seniors have the chance to stay at home where they feel the happiest and most comfortable.

Here are just a few of the reasons why older men and women prefer to age at home:

How much does a senior's home truly mean to them?

A study published by the American Society on Aging found that more than half of seniors say their home's emotional value means more than how much their home is worth in monetary value. It stands to reason, then, that a senior's home is where they want to grow old.

With the help of elderly care in Ashton, MD, seniors don't have to age in a sterilized care facility. Instead, they can age gracefully in the place they want to be most: their home. In contrast, seniors who move to a long-term care facility must adapt to new environments, new people, and new systems that the facility implements. At this stage in life, this kind of drastic change can be more harmful than helpful.

Institutional care facilities like nursing homes often put large groups of people together to live in one location. On any given day, dozens of staff members and caregivers run in and out of these facilities. Being around so many new people in a relatively small living environment can be dangerous for a seniors' health and wellbeing. When you consider that thousands of seniors passed away in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, opting for in-home care is often a safer, healthier choice for seniors.

Aging in place has been shown to improve seniors' quality of life, which helps boost physical health and also helps insulate them from viral and bacterial risks found in elderly living facilities.

For many seniors, the ability to live independently with assistance from a caregiver is a priceless option. With in-home care, seniors experience a higher level of independence and freedom - much more so than in other settings like a nursing home. When a senior has the chance to age in place, they get to live life on their own terms, inside the house that they helped make into a home. More independence means more control over their personal lives, too, which leads to increased levels of fulfillment, happiness, and personal gratification. Over time, these positive feelings can manifest into a healthier, longer life.

More independence, a healthier life, and increased comfort are only a few benefits of aging in place. You have to take into consideration the role of cost and convenience. Simply put, it's usually easier and more affordable to help seniors age in place than it is to move them into an institutional care facility. According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, seniors who age in the comfort of their homes can save thousands of dollars per month.

In-home care services from Always Best Care, for instance, are often less expensive than long-term solutions, which can cost upwards of six figures per year. To make matters worse, many residential care facilities are reluctant to accept long-term care insurance and other types of payment assistance.

With Always Best Care's home care services, seniors and their families have a greater level of control over their care plans. In-home care gives seniors the chance to form a bond with a trusted caregiver and also receive unmatched care that is catered to their needs. In long-term care facilities, seniors and their loved ones have much less control over their care plan and have less of a say in who provides their care.

Affordable Care

In-home care is a valuable resource that empowers seniors to age in place on their own terms. However, a big concern for many families and their loved ones is how much in-home care costs. If you're worried that in-home care is too expensive, you may be pleasantly surprised to learn that it is one of the most affordable senior care arrangements available.

Typically, hiring an Always Best Care in-home caregiver for a few hours a week is more affordable than sending your loved one to a long-term care facility. This is true even for seniors with more complex care needs.

At Always Best Care, we will work closely with you and your family to develop a Care Plan that not only meets your care needs, but your budget requirements, too. Once we discover the level of care that you or your senior need, we develop an in-home care plan that you can afford.

In addition to our flexible care options, families should also consider the following resources to help offset potential home care costs:

If your loved one qualifies, Medicaid may help reduce in-home care costs. Review your MD's Medicaid program laws and benefits, and make sure your senior's financial and medical needs meet Medicaid eligibility requirements.
Attendance and aid benefits through military service can cover a portion of the costs associated with in-home care for veterans and their spouses.
Many senior care services like in-home care are included in long-term care insurance options. Research different long-term care solutions to find a plan that provides coverage for senior care.
Home care can be included as part of a senior's private insurance plan. Read over your loved one's insurance policy carefully or speak with their insurance provider to determine if in-home care is covered.
Depending on the life insurance plan, you may be able to apply your policy toward long-term care. You may be able to use long-term-care coverage to help pay for in-home elderly care.
 Senior Care Ashton, MD

Compassionate Care. Trusted Caregivers.

When you or your senior loved one needs assistance managing daily tasks at home, finding a qualified caregiver can be challenging. It takes a special kind of person to provide reliable care for your senior loved one. However, a caregiver's role involves more than meal preparation and medication reminders. Many seniors rely on their caregivers for companionship, too.

Our companion care services give seniors the chance to socialize in a safe environment and engage in activities at home. These important efforts boost morale and provide much-needed relief from repetitive daily routines. A one-on-one, engaging conversation can sharpen seniors' minds and give them something in which to be excited.

At Always Best Care, we only hire care providers that we would trust to care for our own loved ones. Our senior caregivers in Ashton, MD understand how important it is to listen and communicate with their seniors. A seemingly small interaction, like a short hug goodbye, can make a major difference in a senior's day. Instead of battling against feelings of isolation, seniors begin to look forward to seeing their caregiver each week.

Understanding the nuances of senior care is just one of the reasons why our care providers are so great at their job.

Unlike some senior care companies, our caregivers must undergo extensive training before they work for Always Best Care. In addition, our caregivers receive ongoing training throughout the year. This training ensures that their standard of care matches up to the high standards we've come to expect. During this training, they will brush up on their communication skills, safety awareness, and symptom spotting. That way, your loved one receives the highest level of non-medical home care from day one.

Assisted Living Referral Services

While it's true that many seniors prefer to age at home, sometimes in-home care isn't the best fit. For those seniors and their families, choosing an assisted living facility makes more sense. Unfortunately, finding the optimal care facility is easier said than done in today's day and age. That's when Always Best Care's assisted living referral services begin to make a lot of sense.

Assisted living is a form of housing intended for seniors who require varying degrees of medical and personal attention. Accommodations may include single rooms, apartments, or shared living arrangements. Assisted living communities are typically designed to resemble a home-like environment and are physically constructed to encourage the independence of residents.

Respite Care Ashton, MD

At assisted living communities, seniors receive help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and eating. They may also benefit from coordination of services with outside healthcare providers, and monitoring of resident activities to ensure their health, safety, and well-being. Caregivers who work at assisted living communities can also provide medication administration and personal care services for older adults.

Other services offered within assisted living communities can include some or all of the following:

  • Housekeeping
  • Laundry
  • Recreational Activities
  • Social Outings
  • Emergency Medical Response
  • Medication Monitoring
  • Family Visitation
  • Personal Care
 Caregivers Ashton, MD

At Always Best Care, our representatives can match your senior's emotional, physical, and financial needs with viable assisted living communities nearby. Results are based on comparative data, so you can select the best choice for you or your loved one.

Always Best Care works closely with local senior living communities to gain valuable knowledge that we then use to help seniors and their loved ones make informed decisions. This information can include basic care and rent, resident availability, and services provided. Because Always Best Care is compensated by these communities, we provide senior living referral services at no extra cost to you.

Some of the most popular assisted living communities to consider in our area include the following:

  • Ashton Living Center
Home Care Ashton, MD

For many seniors, moving into a senior living community revolves around how and when they want to make a transition to more involved care. Some seniors are more proactive about transitioning to independent living. Others choose to remain home until their care needs or other requirements are satisfied. Remember - our staff is here to help. Contact our office today to learn more about assisted living communities and how we can find a facility that exceeds your expectations.

You may recognize her from her uplifting segments on Good Morning America providing a commanding voice on topics related to women’s health, wellness, and nutrition. Others may remember her as a co-host of the talk show “The Doctors.” As ABC’s Chief Health and Medical Correspondent for nearly 6 years, Dr. Jennifer Ashtonhas been a leading voice on the nation’s most important medical and public health topics. You no longer need to wait to see her on TV, you can have access to her expert opinions on a wide range of topics because she is launching a new magazine entitled “Better” that is currently available on stands throughout America.

In the magazine, Dr. Ashton is answering the plethora of questions, requests, and comments she receives regularly about women’s health to help readers find ways to look, feel, and live better. As she states, “My philosophy is to be honest. It’s not about being the best. It’s about being better than you were before, improving yourself. Even baby steps can be the difference in improving your health.”

In the premiere issue that has been available on stands since June 2nd, Dr. Ashton writes candidly about the most relevant issues in advancing women’s health, including menopause, mental health, sleep, skincare and weight management. Although she has been providing expert consult on these issues for over a decade on popular TV, Dr. Ashton feels this magazine will provide more personal tips and views that are in line with her professional and personal philosophy. During a one-on-one interview, she stated, “The magazine will provide expert opinions and interpretations that readers can continue to refer to and have access to at the palm of their hands. I see this magazine as a real patient encounter where I can be their personal expert on issues that really matter.”

Part of her impetus in advancing and being a champion for mental health relates directly to her own personal experiences, and in particular, the death of her ex-husband by suicide in 2017. Her children urged her to use her national platform to highlight the importance of mental well-being for women and all Americans. As she notes, “There is so much stigma about mental health as well as blame. I felt that blame when my ex-husband passed.” She then adds, “A holistic approach is essential in addressing anxiety, stress, and depression. Connecting the dots between mental health and physical health is a must. One cannot have a healthy body without a healthy mind, and vice versa.”

Dr. Ashton hopes the June issue is one of many issues of the magazine that will be published in the near future. She feels that the pandemic transformed the way the general public accessed medical information, with many turning to news media for their basic information on health and wellness. In her words, “The pandemic amplified the interest and need for medical and nutritional information, and this is especially true for women. Women are demanding more access to this information from credible sources, and this needs to be presented and analyzed clearly for the lay public.”

Dr. Ashton has spent the majority of her career advocating for women and inspiring the general public to reflect on health, through her national television and social media platforms. She will now have the opportunity to inspire even more women with the launch of her new magazine. She acknowledges the many challenges with respect to women’s health that lay ahead. Dr. Jennifer Ashton appears on "Good Morning America" daily with a head of perfectly styled hair, but behind the scenes, the ABC News chief medical correspondent said she experiences extreme hair loss.

The breakage and hair loss that Ashton has experienced for the past year is something she said her mom Dorothy Garfein, who is in her 80s, warned her about, based on her own experience.

Garfein said she had fine, shiny hair throughout her life, but noticed a sharp change in her 70s, when her hair became noticeably thinner.

In turn, Ashton, who is in her 50s, said she has worked to teach her daughter Chloe, who is in her 20s, to take care of her hair now so that it stays healthy throughout her life.

The hair tips and wisdom shared by the three generations shows the evolution of hair that happens naturally as women age, according to Ashton.

"Roughly every decade there is a change in hair," Ashton said, adding, "With age, all of us will have a change in our hair."

Read below for Ashton's advice on how to care for your hair across different decades of life.

20s and 30s: Be proactive by resting

Ashton's advice for women in their 20s and 30s is to "rest" their hair by resisting the urge to over-style it.

"Aggressive color, color process or heat process on a long-term basis is absolutely going to damage hair. That's a fact," Ashton said. "So, it's a matter of is it worth it? How much are you going to damage it, and for how long?"

Ashton noted that for women in their 20s and 30s, their hair will bounce back better from over-styling, but going easy on your hair during this time of life will pay off later.

"The earlier we all prioritize the health and well-being of our hair, the better [it] will be across our lifetime," she said.

Some examples of over-styling hair include blow-drying, straightening, getting it colored or permed, as well as pulling it back tightly in a ponytail, especially when wet.

Ashton noted that even brushing your hair too much, which used to be considered an important hair care tool, can cause breakage.

Chloe, Ashton's daughter, said she takes care of her hair now by massaging her scalp, using a hair mask on days that she lets her hair rest and keeping her hair trimmed and cut, so that it stays healthy.

"I've tried to learn from the hair debacle that my mom has gone through," Chloe said. "One thing I've taken from that is the importance of a hair rest day ... letting it get air, not putting any heat on it and just letting it rest."

A woman in her 20s and 30s may also experience pregnancy, which can bring its own set of changes to one's hair -- another thing to keep in mind in terms of being patient and gentle when it comes to hair care.

40s and 50s: Prepare for perimenopause, menopause

During their 40s and 50s, women have to deal with changes to their hair that come with perimenopause and menopause, the time when a woman's ovaries gradually begin to make less estrogen, eventually stopping completely.

"Due to a variety of factors, hair takes a hit," Ashton said of the perimenopause and menopause phases. "It grows less. It gets thinner. It's more vulnerable and more delicate and it can lose some of its luster."

Ashton noted that a woman's hair does not typically revert back after menopause, saying, "It's something that almost every woman, if she's being honest, will deal with basically from menopause on."

Due to all the changes, Ashton recommends that women in their 40s and 50s take an "all-out, fill-the-boat" approach to caring for their hair.

"That means making sure your diet is good, making sure that you're getting enough protein, that you're getting enough zinc, that you're getting enough folic acid, all of those are important for hair growth," she said, adding, "Your styling and grooming habits are incredibly important."

Ashton said she now practices what hairstylists call "protective hair styling."

"I protect my hair as much as possible," she said. "I don't think in a given week, I'm ever fully blowing out my hair. I'm either letting it air-dry naturally if it's a weekend, or I'm coming in with it wet for work and I'm just having the front blown out and I put the faux-ponytail on so that it's reasonably presentable for TV."

During her own hair loss journey, Ashton said that resting her hair has also meant wearing more hats and headscarves. She also wore hair extensions occasionally, but stresses those can damage hair further.

When it comes to products, Ashton recommends limiting the use of hair products that contain alcohol as an ingredient because alcohol will dry out hair even more. Instead, she recommends using a hair mask product, or going more natural by using coconut oil or olive oil to moisturize the hair.

Finally, Ashton stressed the importance of checking with a medical provider to rule out other medical causes of hair loss, like thyroid function.

60s and beyond: Be gentle

Ashton said that the later decades of life are a time to "be gentle."

"Be kind and gentle and patient with yourself as an older woman," she said. "Don't only be gentle with yourself figuratively, but literally. You can't do the same heat, the same pulling, the same processing and styling as a woman who is middle-aged."

She continued, "That doesn't mean [hair] still can't be fabulous. It just means it requires a different approach."

In addition to going easy on treatments and products that may cause stress to the hair, Ashton said women in their 60s and beyond can have fun.

"Experiment with different types of things, whether they are fun hats or scarves or even wigs," she said.

Dear Partner, This Is What Menopause Feels Like

Dear Partner, I am writing to you because it’s time for us to take a trip to the mini med school that is menopause. Sometimes it may seem like the woman you’ve known all these years is gone, or changed into someone totally unfamiliar. I get it. Sometimes I feel the same way. Dear Partner,

I am writing to you because it’s time for us to take a trip to the mini med school that is menopause. Sometimes it may seem like the woman you’ve known all these years is gone, or changed into someone totally unfamiliar. I get it. Sometimes I feel the same way. I’ve never gone through menopause before, and since it can be different for every woman, I have no idea what to expect. Some days I feel like I’m going to get through it no problem, and other days, I feel...well, like I won’t.

Put simply, I feel like I’m springing leaks of symptoms from literally all angles. One day it might be my mood, mind, memory, or ability to focus. I’ve been feeling more stress, anxiety, and moodiness than I did when I was a teenager. The next day, my symptoms travel down my body and may involve breast tenderness, bloating, midsection weight gain (even though I haven’t changed what I am eating), fatigue, irregular bleeding, hot flashes, and what feels like the ultimate insult—vaginal dryness. Between tender breasts, a bloated belly, and a dry vagina, can you understand why I may not be in the mood for sex?

I want my old self back. I want my “old,” younger vagina back! Part of me is afraid that the premenopausal me may be gone forever, and that I may not like the postmenopausal me—and that you may not like her, either. It can be overwhelming.

More From Oprah Daily

Part of me is afraid that the premenopausal me may be gone forever.

The thing about menopause is that it’s not just about the physical or psychological changes—though those certainly aren’t a walk in the park. Society has a stigma against many things pertaining to women, and this is no different. When a man ages, he becomes more distinguished. When a woman ages, she is “past her prime” or seen as less relevant. In the past, even the medical community turned its back on us when we needed them most. Thankfully, that is changing. Doctors are listening and helping, and you can, too.

It won’t always be this way; I know I will come out of this stage and be better than ever. For now, I ask you to understand that some of these hormonal changes are tough—just like they can be tough during puberty or during and after pregnancy. I will get through it. We will get through it. And by the way, if manopause were a thing, I’d totally be there for you, too.

ASHTON-SANDY SPRING, Md. — A family is starting the holiday season looking for a place to stay after a fire ripped through their Sandy Spring home Thursday afternoon.

Firefighters with Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services responded to Alexander Manor Drive, off of Ednor Road, around 2:30 p.m. after neighbors called 911 to report the house fire in the area. Upon arrival, they found the home engulfed in flames and heavy smoke.

At the time of the blaze, one person was in the home, and was alerted to the fire after smoke alarms were activated. They were able to get out of the home before firefighters arrived at the scene. Two dogs that were in the home were also rescued before the fire department arrived to tackle the fire.

Officials say the fire started in the garage of the home and was due to lithium-ion batteries charging. The fire was extinguished, but the family was displaced as photos show one side of the home completely gutted. The family consisted of three adults and two dogs.

No injuries were reported due to the large fire. The fire caused over $500,000 worth of damage.

In a wedding for the ages, ABC News' Dr. Jennifer Ashton married prolific television producer and Boston Red Sox chairman Tom Werner in an intimate affair on Saturday.

The wedding was attended by family and friends including Sara Gilbert, Donna Karan, Corey Gamble, Al Michaels, and George Stephanopoulos and Ali Wentworth.

"I'm so happy because I never thought I'd find love like this," says Ashton, 53, who wore a Ralph Lauren Collection gown for the big day. "But when you're older, it doesn't take long to recognize when you've found your soul mate."

During the ceremony, which took place at New York City's famed Harmonie Club, Ashton was escorted by her son Alex, 24 and daughter Chloe, 22, before exchanging emotional vows with Werner, 72.

Following the vows, guests were transported to the Metropolitan Museum of Art for a reception at the ancient Temple of Dendur for a dinner of fish and filet, as well as tunes by the Elan Music band.

"We just wanted it to be a celebration of love and happiness," says Ashton of the nuptials, which were planned by Todd Fiscus of Todd Events. "I never thought this would happen for me. And I am so grateful."

Ashton and Werner, who produced notable shows like Roseanne, The Cosby Show and That '70s Show and is also co-owner of the Fenway Sports Group, Boston Red Sox and chairman of the Liverpool Football Club, met in February 2021 through their mutual friend Ben Sherwood, former President of ABC News.

"I think I was one of the only people working in television who didn't know who he was," recalls Ashton. "I didn't watch his shows and I wasn't a baseball or soccer fan. But after our first date, we got serious pretty quickly."

Fox Weather's Stephen Morgan Marries News Correspondent Steven Romo: 'I Can't Imagine Living Without Him'

After facing immense tragedy, finding love again didn't always seem in the cards for Ashton. Her ex-husband, prominent surgeon Rob Ashton, died by suicide just days after they finalized their divorce.

"I've been through a lot of heartbreak," says Ashton. "And in a lot of ways, when you've lived through suicide and the loss of a loved one, it makes the hard things harder. I was cynical that I'd ever find love."

Meeting Werner, "it felt very different, for both of us," says Ashton. "And from the beginning, he was incredibly sensitive and compassionate. It takes an incredibly strong person to be as gentle with someone's heart as he has been with mine. He has this ability to heal my wounds and nourish my dreams at the same time."
