Home Care Escalante, UT

They say that your golden years are the best years of your life. For most older Americans, that's how it should be - a time to relax, reflect, and live life in a familiar place. After all, senior citizens in the U.S. have worked tirelessly to build a better economy, serve their communities, and raise families.

However, as seniors grow older, completing daily tasks like showering and enjoying activities such as visiting the historic Escalante Heritage Center gets harder without someone by their side. Unfortunately, many older Americans aren't able to rely on their adult children for help. The reality in today's world is that family members do not have the skills or time to dedicate to caring for their parents. That's where Always Best Care Senior Services comes in.

Our in-home care services are for people who prefer to stay at home as they grow older but need ongoing care that family or friends cannot provide. More and more older adults prefer to live far away from long-term, institutionalized facilities and closer to the place where they feel most comfortable - their home. Home care in Escalante, UT is a safe, effective way to give your loved ones the care they need when they need it the most.

“1. Stay active. Exercise may be the last thing you want to do when your arthritis hurts, but many studies show that physical activity is one of the best ways to improve your quality of life. 2. Eat a balanced diet. Studies show that a variety of nutrients may help ease arthritis symptoms. 3. Lose weight. Being overweight puts undue strain on weight-bearing joints such as your knees, spine, hips, ankles, and feet. 5. Use hot or cold packs. By increasing blood flow, hot compresses can ease pain and stiffness. 6. Keep pain under control. Over-the-counter medications can help ease arthritis pain. 7. Talk to your doctor about supplements and complementary medicine. Many supplements have been tested for the treatment of arthritis. 8. Try splints, braces, and other aids. Devices that support painful joints, such as splints, braces, and canes can help ease your discomfort and prevent injury. 9. Seek support. Living with arthritis isn’t easy. Finding other people that you can talk to and share ideas with can help. Check out arthritis support groups online or in your area. 10. Stay positive. What is Non-Medical Senior Care in Escalante, UT?

lm-check

Home is where the heart is. While that saying can sound a tad cliche, it is especially true for many seniors living in America. When given a choice, older adults most often prefer to grow older at home. An AARP study found that three out of four adults over the age of 50 want to stay in their homes and communities as they age.

lm-check

When you begin to think about why, it makes sense. Home offers a sense of security, comfort, and familiarity.

lm-check

The truth is, as we age, we begin to rely on others for help. When a family is too busy or lives too far away to fulfill this role, in-home senior care is often the best solution. Home care services allow seniors to enjoy personal independence while also receiving trustworthy assistance from a trained caregiver.

lm-check

At Always Best Care, we offer a comprehensive range of home care services to help seniors stay healthy while they get the help they need to remain independent. As your senior loved one gets older, giving them the gift of senior care is one of the best ways to show your love, even if you live far away.

Respite Care

Respite Care Services

According to AARP, more than 53 million adults living in the U.S. provide care to someone over 50 years old. Unfortunately, these caregivers experience stress, exhaustion, and even depression. Our respite care services help family caregivers address urgent obligations, spend time with their children, and enjoy nearby activities. Perhaps more importantly, respite care gives family members time to recharge and regroup. Taking personal time to de-stress reduces the risk of caregiver burnout. So, if you've always wanted to eat at the local 4th West Pub or visit Escalante Interagency Visitor Center, don't feel bad. Doing so is great for both you and your loved one.

At the end of the day, our goal is to become a valuable part of your senior's daily routine. That way, we may help give them the highest quality of life possible. We know that staying at home is important for your loved one, and we are here to help make sure that is possible.

If you have been on the fence about non-medical home care, there has never been a better time than now to give your senior the care, assistance, and companionship they deserve.

Aging in Place: The Preferred Choice for Most Seniors

While it's true that some seniors have complicated medical needs that prevent them from staying at home, aging in place is often the best arrangement for seniors and their families. With a trusted caregiver, seniors have the opportunity to live with a sense of dignity and do so as they see fit - something that is unavailable to many older people today.

In-home care makes it possible for millions of seniors to age in place every year. Rather than moving to a strange nursing home, seniors have the chance to stay at home where they feel the happiest and most comfortable.

Here are just a few of the reasons why older men and women prefer to age at home:

How much does a senior's home truly mean to them?

A study published by the American Society on Aging found that more than half of seniors say their home's emotional value means more than how much their home is worth in monetary value. It stands to reason, then, that a senior's home is where they want to grow old.

With the help of elderly care in Escalante, UT, seniors don't have to age in a sterilized care facility. Instead, they can age gracefully in the place they want to be most: their home. In contrast, seniors who move to a long-term care facility must adapt to new environments, new people, and new systems that the facility implements. At this stage in life, this kind of drastic change can be more harmful than helpful.

Institutional care facilities like nursing homes often put large groups of people together to live in one location. On any given day, dozens of staff members and caregivers run in and out of these facilities. Being around so many new people in a relatively small living environment can be dangerous for a seniors' health and wellbeing. When you consider that thousands of seniors passed away in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, opting for in-home care is often a safer, healthier choice for seniors.

Aging in place has been shown to improve seniors' quality of life, which helps boost physical health and also helps insulate them from viral and bacterial risks found in elderly living facilities.

For many seniors, the ability to live independently with assistance from a caregiver is a priceless option. With in-home care, seniors experience a higher level of independence and freedom - much more so than in other settings like a nursing home. When a senior has the chance to age in place, they get to live life on their own terms, inside the house that they helped make into a home. More independence means more control over their personal lives, too, which leads to increased levels of fulfillment, happiness, and personal gratification. Over time, these positive feelings can manifest into a healthier, longer life.

More independence, a healthier life, and increased comfort are only a few benefits of aging in place. You have to take into consideration the role of cost and convenience. Simply put, it's usually easier and more affordable to help seniors age in place than it is to move them into an institutional care facility. According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, seniors who age in the comfort of their homes can save thousands of dollars per month.

In-home care services from Always Best Care, for instance, are often less expensive than long-term solutions, which can cost upwards of six figures per year. To make matters worse, many residential care facilities are reluctant to accept long-term care insurance and other types of payment assistance.

With Always Best Care's home care services, seniors and their families have a greater level of control over their care plans. In-home care gives seniors the chance to form a bond with a trusted caregiver and also receive unmatched care that is catered to their needs. In long-term care facilities, seniors and their loved ones have much less control over their care plan and have less of a say in who provides their care.

 Elderly Care Escalante, UT

Affordable Care

In-home care is a valuable resource that empowers seniors to age in place on their own terms. However, a big concern for many families and their loved ones is how much in-home care costs. If you're worried that in-home care is too expensive, you may be pleasantly surprised to learn that it is one of the most affordable senior care arrangements available.

Typically, hiring an Always Best Care in-home caregiver for a few hours a week is more affordable than sending your loved one to a long-term care facility. This is true even for seniors with more complex care needs.

At Always Best Care, we will work closely with you and your family to develop a Care Plan that not only meets your care needs, but your budget requirements, too. Once we discover the level of care that you or your senior need, we develop an in-home care plan that you can afford.

In addition to our flexible care options, families should also consider the following resources to help offset potential home care costs:

If your loved one qualifies, Medicaid may help reduce in-home care costs. Review your UT's Medicaid program laws and benefits, and make sure your senior's financial and medical needs meet Medicaid eligibility requirements.
Attendance and aid benefits through military service can cover a portion of the costs associated with in-home care for veterans and their spouses.
Many senior care services like in-home care are included in long-term care insurance options. Research different long-term care solutions to find a plan that provides coverage for senior care.
Home care can be included as part of a senior's private insurance plan. Read over your loved one's insurance policy carefully or speak with their insurance provider to determine if in-home care is covered.
Depending on the life insurance plan, you may be able to apply your policy toward long-term care. You may be able to use long-term-care coverage to help pay for in-home elderly care.
 Senior Care Escalante, UT

Compassionate Care. Trusted Caregivers.

When you or your senior loved one needs assistance managing daily tasks at home, finding a qualified caregiver can be challenging. It takes a special kind of person to provide reliable care for your senior loved one. However, a caregiver's role involves more than meal preparation and medication reminders. Many seniors rely on their caregivers for companionship, too.

Our companion care services give seniors the chance to socialize in a safe environment and engage in activities at home. These important efforts boost morale and provide much-needed relief from repetitive daily routines. A one-on-one, engaging conversation can sharpen seniors' minds and give them something in which to be excited.

At Always Best Care, we only hire care providers that we would trust to care for our own loved ones. Our senior caregivers in Escalante, UT understand how important it is to listen and communicate with their seniors. A seemingly small interaction, like a short hug goodbye, can make a major difference in a senior's day. Instead of battling against feelings of isolation, seniors begin to look forward to seeing their caregiver each week.

Understanding the nuances of senior care is just one of the reasons why our care providers are so great at their job.

Unlike some senior care companies, our caregivers must undergo extensive training before they work for Always Best Care. In addition, our caregivers receive ongoing training throughout the year. This training ensures that their standard of care matches up to the high standards we've come to expect. During this training, they will brush up on their communication skills, safety awareness, and symptom spotting. That way, your loved one receives the highest level of non-medical home care from day one.

Assisted Living Referral Services

While it's true that many seniors prefer to age at home, sometimes in-home care isn't the best fit. For those seniors and their families, choosing an assisted living facility makes more sense. Unfortunately, finding the optimal care facility is easier said than done in today's day and age. That's when Always Best Care's assisted living referral services begin to make a lot of sense.

Assisted living is a form of housing intended for seniors who require varying degrees of medical and personal attention. Accommodations may include single rooms, apartments, or shared living arrangements. Assisted living communities are typically designed to resemble a home-like environment and are physically constructed to encourage the independence of residents.

Respite Care Escalante, UT

At assisted living communities, seniors receive help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and eating. They may also benefit from coordination of services with outside healthcare providers, and monitoring of resident activities to ensure their health, safety, and well-being. Caregivers who work at assisted living communities can also provide medication administration and personal care services for older adults.

Other services offered within assisted living communities can include some or all of the following:

  • Housekeeping
  • Laundry
  • Recreational Activities
  • Social Outings
  • Emergency Medical Response
  • Medication Monitoring
  • Family Visitation
  • Personal Care
 Caregivers Escalante, UT

At Always Best Care, our representatives can match your senior's emotional, physical, and financial needs with viable assisted living communities nearby. Results are based on comparative data, so you can select the best choice for you or your loved one.

Always Best Care works closely with local senior living communities to gain valuable knowledge that we then use to help seniors and their loved ones make informed decisions. This information can include basic care and rent, resident availability, and services provided. Because Always Best Care is compensated by these communities, we provide senior living referral services at no extra cost to you.

Some of the most popular assisted living communities to consider in our area include the following:

  • Senior Citizens Center
  • The Meadows at Escalante
  • Escalante at Willow Creek
  • Valencia at Draper
  • Entrada Escalante Lodge
  • Escalante at Coventry

Hotels We Love: Yonder Escalante Is The Perfect Base Camp For Adventure In Southern Utah

One of the largest, most remote, and rugged National Monuments in the United States is one you may not yet be familiar with: Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. One of the largest, most remote, and rugged National Monuments in the United States is one you may not yet be familiar with: Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. A vast protected area located in southern Utah, the monument covers an area of approximately 1.9 million acres of stunningly diverse landscape – including rugged canyons, towering cliffs, waterfalls, natural bridges, and arches.

Despite its remote location, Southern Utah – specifically Garfield County – is an adventurer’s paradise, with the world’s largest concentration of scenic attractions in one county. With two National Parks (Bryce Canyon and Capitol Reef), three state parks (Kodachrome Basin, Anasazi Museum), and Escalante Petrified Forest, as well as National Recreation Areas and National Monuments (including the vast Grand Staircase-Escalante), this is one of the true outdoor epicenters of the nation.

It’s also home to the coolest “glampground” I’ve ever visited – Yonder Escalante. Here is why you should make it your base camp for your adventure to Bryce Canyon Country.

WHY IT’S AWESOME:

Yonder Escalante is perfectly situated off the gorgeous Scenic Byway 12 surrounded by the vast open spaces and geological formations of Southern Utah. It feels like a secret oasis among a rugged, desolate environment from the moment you drive into the property – with attentive staff, luxurious accommodations, a beautiful pool for a hot summer day, and – the best part, in my opinion – a drive-in movie theater playing classics each night. It’s a destination in itself in the middle of so many.

IN-HOUSE FOOD AND DRINK:

Each Airstream, cabin, RV site, and campsite has a private fire pit for cooking up meals, and if you don’t want to prep yourself Yonder has DIY meal kits available in the general store. Each meal kit includes a protein (choose from local NY strip steaks, roasted chicken, or a Beyond bratwurst), a choice of two sides, bread, and dessert. It’s a thoughtful addition that keeps the glam in glamping.

For breakfast, there is an on-site food truck serving until 11 am that also opens on weekends for dinner. Pro-tip: try the “Best in the State Breakfast Sandwich” with local Kanab meats sausage patty, fried egg, American cheese, crispy hash brown, and ketchup, on a griddled potato bun. It’s delectable and perfect before a day spent hiking or after a night with a few glasses of wine.

When dusk rolls around you can enjoy the concession stand at the Drive-In Theater. Located in its own vintage Airstream the concession stand offers traditional concession fare like hot dogs, nachos, candy, and beer – and free popcorn.

AMENITIES:

ROOM TYPES:

Yonder is unique from many “glampgrounds” in that it has several options for lodgings. From refurbished vintage Airstreams to stylish cabins to RV sites – you have your pick of interesting abodes.

There are 10 vintage Airstreams on the property at Yonder – each lovingly restored and furnished with midcentury furniture, a kitchenette, and an HVAC system. The Airstreams also offer a private fire pit and table with chairs outside of each unit to roast marshmallows or grab a glass of wine while watching the sunset.

The cabins at Yonder were custom designed to provide the comforts of a cabin with the beauty of nature through high ceilings and large glass walls looking out onto the property. Cabins are climate controlled and each includes a mini-fridge, microwave, lounger, and private outdoor fire pit.

Deluxe RV sites include full electrical, water, and sewer hook-ups, a personal fire pit, and an oversized picnic table. Max 35 feet, each site is on a leveled concrete pad and includes access to all of Yonder’s amenities.

Yonder also has sites for campervans or tents (up to 2 per site) on the property. Sites include electrical and water hookups, oversized picnic tables, charcoal grills, and personal fire pits. All sites include access to Yonder amenities.

BEST THINGS TO DO WITHIN A 15-MINUTE WALK:

The coolest thing to do within a 15-minute walk is, of course, the Drive-in theater on the property. Playing cult classics films each night at dusk, there are vintage cars parked for visitors to sit inside to watch (with radios and heaters if needed) as well as plenty of space to bring your chair and enjoy the show. I happily watched Goonies and The Princess Bride during my stay with some popcorn and hard Kombucha from the concession stand. It was as magical as it sounds.

BEST THINGS TO DO WITHIN A ONE-HOUR DRIVE:

GRAND STAIRCASE-ESCALANTE NATIONAL MONUMENT – HOLE-IN-THE-ROCK ROAD – 20 miles to start

Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument is huge – but luckily has many spectacular and accessible areas, like Hole-In-The-Rock Road. Located just 20 miles from Yonder, the 55.5 miles of gravel road leads to many of the most popular sites in the monument – one of the most popular being Devil’s Garden just 12 miles down the road. Further, you’ll stop at Dry Fork of Coyote Gulch trailhead where you can access the non-technical Peek-a-boo and Spooky slot canyons.

Burr Trail Road is one of the most scenic drives in a state that is nearly exclusively made up of scenic drives. The 67.4 mil road, originally constructed as a cattle road between Boulder Utah, and Bullfrog Marina in Lake Powell takes explorers through not only Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument but also portions of Capitol Reef National Park and Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. Be sure to stop at Singing Canyon – a beautiful slot canyon just off the road and be aware of the weather as the road is only paved to the boundary of Capitol Reef National Park and may become impassable during certain conditions.

Boulder, Utah is one of the most remote locations in Utah, with a population of just 250. Surprisingly, it is also home to the only restaurant in Utah ever named a James Beard semi-finalist for outstanding restaurant – and they’ve done it multiple times.

Hell’s Backbone Grill & Farm is a farm-to-table restaurant that is unassuming and delicious with seasonal and unique dishes that make the difficulty of getting a reservation well worth it. Pro-tip: drive and hike on Burr Trail Road before dinner as the road begins nearly next door.

Bryce Canyon National Park is something you have to see to believe. With its striking hoodoos and dramatic vistas – this is a park not to be missed for any outdoor lover. Hike Queens Garden or around on the Rim Trail which hits elevations over 9,000 ft before descending into the canyon to hike the easy and accessible Mossy Cave Trail.

The Bed in my Airstream was almost too comfortable – I slept in both mornings of my stay instead of waking up to watch the sunrise as I had planned. The linens felt very luxe with plenty of pillows (this really matters to me) and a fluffy-down comforter. With windows all around and adjustable reading lights, it was the perfect place to sleep, lounge, and read.

Yonder Escalante is family-friendly and luxuriously rugged, but the style adds some sexiness to the overall feel. The elevated bathhouses and pool/spa area are sleek while the accommodations are light-filled and inviting.

Everywhere! Honestly, though, the entire place is an Instagrammers dream – but without being cheesy. The backdrop of Grand Staricase-Escalante coupled with the vintage Airstreams and Drive-In theater juxtaposed with sleek modern cabins and amenities is fresh and fun. There is an aesthetic for anyone that goes far beyond the normal glamping resort.

I especially loved taking photos of the vintage cars permanently parked at the Drive-In Theater. The colors and styles are unexpected and joyful in the middle of the desert.

Open seasonally from generally mid-March to November, the glamping resort closes for the winter months. I visited in early April and while the nights were still chilly and the pool hadn’t yet opened it was warm during the day and the heater in my Airstream kept me toasty at night.

It’s hard to find anything to complain about here, honestly… The location, amenities, and staff were all top-notch. But if I was forced, I’d say that the distance between parking and my Airstream site was a bit long as well as the distance between the Airstream and clubhouse/pool area. To mitigate that, Yonder is very accommodating and with a simple text, a staff member will pick you and your luggage up in a golf cart to or from your site.

Choose your adventure here. Airstreams start at $249/night, Cabins at $229/night, deluxe RV sites at $119/night, and van life/campsites at $69/night.

Nicknamed “the Science Monument,” the Grand Staircase–Escalante National Monument in southern Utah features spectacular multihued cliffs and canyon systems that showcase millennia of sedimentary rock formations. Scientists come from all over the world to study Grand Staircase–Escalante’s unique fossil-containing sites, which offer an unparalleled window into the Late Cretaceous period. President Bill Clinton designated Grand Staircase–Escalante as a national monument in 1996, providing needed protection to its special geologic and historic treasures and its vividly beautiful landscapes.

Since its designation, research in the monument has flourished, yielding fossils of previously undiscovered dinosaur species and offering rare opportunities to study undisturbed desert ecosystems in situ. Yet the monument became a focus of the Trump administration’s anti-environmental agenda. On December 4, 2017, then president Donald Trump signed proclamations dismantling Grand Staircase–Escalante as well as the Bears Ears National Monument, also in Utah. Trump’s proclamation slashed Grand Staircase–Escalante by roughly half, leaving nearly a million acres of federal public land open to harmful developments—such as mineral exploitation, coal mining, new road construction, the use of mechanized vehicles, and oil and gas drilling—that could ruin vital parts of the paleontological record and the land's wild natural character.

NRDC—together with the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance and a coalition of other environmental groups represented by Earthjustice—immediately filed a lawsuit in federal court in Washington, D.C. (We also filed a separate lawsuit over Bears Ears.) A coalition of paleontologists and other monument supporters filed a similar lawsuit, and the district court consolidated the two cases. Our lawsuits asserted that Trump had neither the constitutional nor statutory authority to dismantle national monuments. In January 2020, we moved for summary judgment.

While we were awaiting the district court’s decision, Trump’s presidency ended, and President Joe Biden—on his first day in office—issued an executive order initiating a review of Trump’s monument rollbacks.

Then, on October 8, 2021, President Biden issued a proclamation restoring Grand Staircase–Escalante to its pre-Trump boundaries. The Biden administration repudiated Trump’s rollback as “unprecedented,” observing that NRDC and our partners’ lawsuits “raised serious and fundamental questions as to whether a president has authority to reduce boundaries or core protections in a way that is tantamount to revocation of a monument.” President Biden restored Grand Staircase–Escalante, the White House explained, to uphold “the long-standing principle that America’s national parks, monuments, and other protected areas are to be protected for all time and for all people.”

In light of the Biden administration’s actions, the district court has “stayed” (paused) our litigation. But the monument still faces real threats from the Trump administration’s rollback, including from mining claims staked there on Trump’s watch. While our case is stayed, the federal government is still required to provide us with timely notice of potentially harmful developments. Separately, the state of Utah and other monument opponents have filed legal challenges to Biden’s restoration proclamation, and NRDC has intervened to defend the restored monument. We will continue to advocate alongside our partners to ensure that Grand Staircase–Escalante remains permanently protected, as it deserves.

From Admiralty Island in Alaska and Agate Fossil Beds in Nebraska to Virgin Islands Coral Reef in the Caribbean and Yucca House in Colorado, the U.S. boasts 131 national monuments.

That’s roughly twice the total number of national parks. Add the fact that many of them are remote, obscure and rarely filmed or written about, it’s difficult for anyone to know which ones to visit.

But there’s a strong case that Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument (GSENM) in southern Utah — managed by the Bureau of Land Management rather than the National Park Service — might be the undisputed heavyweight champ of America’s national monuments.

“The Escalante Grand Staircase region is still a hidden gem,” says Linz DeSeno, director of operations at the Yonder Escalante glamping resort on the edge of the monument. “We don’t nearly have the tourism numbers as national parks see. There is no waiting in traffic or lines getting into the monument or making reservations for hikes. You truly feel the remoteness here in all the best ways.”

The park takes its name from two of its three major geographical features.

The Grand Staircase is part of a series of immense plateaus that gradually descend between Bryce Canyon and the Grand Canyon. The Escalante Canyons were formed by an eponymous river and its tributaries. In between is the colossal Kaiparowits Plateau, stretching more than 50 miles between the town of Escalante and the Colorado River.

The monument was signed into reality by President Clinton in 1996. Energy companies convinced the Trump administration to downsize the monument by 47% so they could explore coal reserves in the Kaiparowits. One of the first things the Biden administration did after taking office in 2020 was restoring the original size.

Huge, Handsome and Untouched

By any stretch of the imagination, Grand Staircase-Escalante is huge. Nearly 1.9 million acres, GSENM is huge. The third largest federal preserve in the Lower 48 states after Death Valley and Yellowstone national parks. Larger than Delaware and Rhode Island combined.

It’s also gorgeous. A vast wilderness spangled with slot canyons, golden cliffs, rock arches, slickrock formations and other desert landscapes, as well as forests and flower-filled meadows at higher points like the 7,000-foot-high Kaiparowits Plateau.

And pristine. Almost totally unspoiled. While roads (both paved and unpaved) offer access to many of the monument’s most popular trails and geological wonders, most of the region is inaccessible unless you’re on foot, bike, horseback — or helicopter if you’ve got those kinds of bucks.

And a wildlife wonderland. A blend of diverse ecosystems, extreme remoteness, and not-a lot-of humans means that animals have the park largely to themselves.

From black bears, bobcats and badgers to bighorn sheep, coyotes and mountain lions, more than 60 mammals are known to inhabit Grand Staircase-Escalante. More than 200 bird species call the area home, including the endangered giant condor, bald eagle and peregrine falcons. And researchers have found over 650 different bee species in the region, some of them populating no more than a tiny ecological niche.

Once upon a time, another type of wildlife was also abundant — dinosaurs. Paleontologists have uncovered thousands of fossils, from the oldest Tyrannosaur ever discovered (80 million years) and a huge duck-billed dinosaur, to five species of horned Ceratops and a giant crocodile-like Deinosuchus.

Twenty-five of the dinosaur species are unique to the region. There’s even one named after the park — Gryposaurus monumentensis (“hook-beaked lizard from the monument”).

Adventure Time

Mountain biking aficionados consider Grand Staircase-Escalante one of the world’s premier sites for off-road cycling and bikepacking. The premier long-distance route is the 160-mile (257-km) Grand Staircase Route, a three to four-day ride along dirt roads that includes a chance to camp beside the super-remote north shore of Lake Powell.

Long-distance hiking is also epic. For those who can make their way through the wilderness with GPS, compass and a topographic map, there are numerous possibilities. The Hayduke Trail — a 812-mile (1,307-km) unmarked route between Arches and Zion national parks — runs right through the middle of GSENM.

However, you don’t have to be a marathon biker or hiker to hit many of the monument’s highlights. Located on State Highway 12 —a National Scenic Byway — the town of Escalante is the jumping off point for day trips and short hikes in the north.

Load up on maps, brochures, and the latest road and weather conditions at the Escalante Interagency Visitor Center on the town’s western edge of town before striking out on your own.

Just east of town is a turnoff to the Hole-in-the-Rock Trail, an unpaved road that shoots south to trailheads for the Devil’s Garden hoodoos, Peek-A-Boo Slot Canyon, the 20 Mile Wash Dinosaur Trackway, and the bizarre Cosmic Ashtray rock formation.

Highway 12 offers roadside trailheads for the Calf Creek Trail to Calf Creek Falls and the Escalante Natural Bridge Trail along the oasis-like Escalante River to a soaring red-rock arch.

DeSeno adds a nighttime activity: “Utah has the highest concentration of International Dark-Sky Association certified areas and this region is at the top of that list.”

Crawling Along Hell’s Backbone

For a total change of pace (and scenery), Hell’s Backbone Road runs 40 miles (65 km) between Escalante and Boulder. Rising from the desert, the route steadily climbs into the densely wooded highlands of Dixie National Forest and over the harrowing Hell’s Backbone Bridge. Dubbed the “scariest bridge in Utah,” the span was originally built in the 1930s over a narrow 1,500-foot (457-meter) deep gorge.

U.S. Highway 89 meanders along the southern edge of the national monument between Glen Canyon Dam and Kanab. Big Water Visitor Center is the place to glean info and maps about this region.

Right outside of Big Water is the trailhead for Wahweap Hoodoos and farther west along Highway 89 are a turnoff to Paria ghost town (where several Western movies, including parts of The Outlaw Josey Wales, were filmed).

Those with four-wheel-drive and high clearance can cruise Cottonwood Canyon Road to trailheads for Lower Hackberry Canyon and the fabled Grosvenor Arch. A rare double natural bridge, it was discovered in the 1930s during a National Geographic expedition through the last part of the Lower 48 states that had yet to be mapped.

Enter Sandman

BLM dispersed (free) camping is allowed in much of the national monument, however there are organized campgrounds at Calf Creek, Deer Creek and White House, as well as state park campgrounds at Kodachrome Basin and Escalante Petrified Forest with its shady lakeside campsites.

The coolest place to stay on the monument’s north side, Yonder Escalante resort near Escalante town offers designer cabins, restored Airstream trailers, and RV sites with hookups. Amenities include a food truck, swimming pool, upscale shower blocks, and classic movies that you watch from vintage cars at a mock drive-in theater.

Down south, overnight options include glamping at Under Canvas Lake Powell-Grand Staircase and the chic Amangiri resort, as well as copious motel-style accommodation in Kanab, UT and Page, AZ

DeSeno says her ideal day at Grand Staircase-Escalante starts with a stop at the Kiva Koffeehouse on Highway 12 for breakfast or brunch. “Then continuing on to a beautiful slot canyon hike down Hole-in-the-Rock road, followed by an after-hike beer at 4th West Pub [in Escalante], before going to dinner at one of our farm-to-table restaurants nearby such as Hells Backbone Grill or Escalante Outfitters.”

In our year 2022, high-desert “bohemian” getaways like Joshua Tree or Marfa are on the verge of being overrun. The Airbnb-Instagram industrial complex and its throngs of venture capitalists, influencers, gurus, and clout chasers have begun slowly stripping these places of their idiosyncrasies, turning them into Pinterest-ready paradises for festival-wear fetishists.

So when The Daily Beast was invited to check out Yonder Escalante, a chic new camping resort in the southern Utah desert—featuring neatly designed A-frame cabins, restored vintage Airstreams, and a drive-in theater with parked classic cars—I must confess: I was skeptical.

My cynical ass hauled itself out to the middle of nowhere late this summer fully expecting to be floored by the natural splendor (who wouldn’t be!) but with a nagging sense of mistrust of yet another sleek, Instagrammable glamping retreat.

Instead, I let go. And I found myself deeply enjoying a long weekend of wonder.

Yonder Escalante is part RV park/part campground/part upscale lodge situated on a 20-acre plot of land right up along Scenic Byway 12—emphasis on scenic because holy hell this drive is just one gasp after another.

The resort’s distance from major cities (Vegas, five hours west; SLC, five hours north) seems to weed out the trend-chasers I so grumpily decried, so much that it feels like a real haven for true believers and adventure seekers.

A relaxed, unpretentious, and carefree experience makes sense considering the glampground was built by a father-son duo who lived the real RV life and came away wanting to create a space for fellow travelers who seek more than “just a parking spot.”

And it definitely is way more than that. Accompanying the 22 cabins, 10 Airstreams, and 35 RV spots is a laundry room along with a spa-like bath house with luxury toiletries and private outdoor showers. A food truck offers breakfast burritos and oatmeals by morning; several delicious sandwiches, including a house smash burger, along with Dole Whip soft-serve and heapings of tots and fries at all other hours. A general store sells DIY meal kits, snacks, and alcoholic beverages. And a mid-century, open-air communal lodge features fire pits overlooking the vast, dusty desert landscape.

The pool/hot tub is a welcome oasis before or after a full day of exploring the surrounding areas. Indeed, there’s an immense amount of stuff to look at and hikes to consider. And Yonder Escalante is the perfect home base for the requisite day trips as it sits within driving distance of both Bryce Canyon and Capitol Reef National Parks and their countless sights, as well as the myriad slot canyons, hoodoos, and river trails dotting the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. A simple daytime drive east on Route 12 turns into a thrill ride on the Hogsback, a stretch of the byway that climbs to the narrow crest of a ridge with immediate drops in the hundreds of feet on either side of the road.

On this particular trip, we hiked Bryce Canyon’s Queens / Navajo combination loop, which included the famed “Wall Street” and its steep, narrow switchbacks; the Devil’s Garden, a remote playground of sandstone formations and arches several miles down the bumpy Hole-in-the-Rock Road; and Lower Calf Creek Falls, a nearly seven mile out-and-back to a 126-foot waterfall tucked away deep within the canyons.

Nothing like multi-hour hikes through some truly extraterrestrial-looking landscapes to reset the neurons in this media-addled brain, release some dopamine, and experience pure, uncut awe.

But it was back at Yonder Escalante where I was more surprised to capture some of that childlike joy.

Since I was a kid, I’ve been fascinated by Airstreams. Something about that retro-futuristic curved aluminum shape—like a sci-fi silver bullet to somewhere, anywhere that isn’t here—has long led me to stop and gawk whenever I spot one. (Shoutout to the person who parks theirs on my favorite cobblestone street in Red Hook.) And so every time I approached our Airstream trailer, I admittedly felt giddy to be there. Absolute dweeb, I know.

I’ve been camping plenty of times and am certainly guilty of wincing at glamping as “inauthentic” or “bougie.” But the Yonder experience sacrifices none of the simple pleasures that make camping enjoyable in the first place. Like cooking on an open flame.

“There’s nothing like a campfire and a can of beans,” Tom Waits once sang, and while there were sadly no cans of beans available, Yonder does offer a delightful series of DIY meal packages: A local whole chicken, spatchcocked and sous-vide in advance so that it stays juicy and you only need to brown it to your liking; or a generous cut of steak from a family-owned meat processor in Kanab; and sides of various fresh and fully seasoned veggies along with—of course—a s’mores kit.

Out in front of each trailer or cabin is a fire pit and plenty of space to just hang out. And so we happily did so for all three nights, almost like a ritual: Return from a long day of hiking, spark up the fire pit, sit around for hours drinking beer, taking in the crisp desert air and staring up at the darkest sky I’ve seen in years with a hazy band of the Milky Way visible.

And then we go to bed and do it all again.

A “glamping destination” isn’t quite the right way to describe Yonder Escalante in southern Utah. “Campground” does this desert dreamscape even less justice. And “resort” sounds too pretentious. But it makes sense that it’s hard to find the right description for this former RV park – which opened in the town of Escalante in 2021 after an extensive renovation – because there’s no place quite like it.

Yonder Escalante is the inaugural property from Yonder Hospitality, which bought the run-down 20-acre RV park and drive-in movie theater with a specific vision: to provide travelers a new way to experience America’s most beautiful national parks.

And Yonder’s prime location in Utah’s Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument does just that. Not only is it set within the Monument’s sprawling backcountry of towering sandstone cliffs, mesmerizing slot canyons, and jaw-dropping panoramic vistas that stretch for miles and miles. But it also positions guests about an hour from Bryce Canyon National Park, and roughly two hours from Zion. (I drove to Escalante after leaving Moab, Utah, where I visited Arches and Canyonlands National Parks. I also hit Capitol Reef along the way, and explored Bryce and Zion while staying at Yonder – allowing me to see all of Utah’s “Mighty Five” National Parks in one epically scenic trip.)

The hospitality group kept 35 spots reserved for RVs or campers, but they added two more lodging options: 10 vintage Airstreams refreshed with light, bright interiors, plus 22 modern and minimalist A-frame micro-cabins that were custom-designed for the property. I opted for one of the tiny cabins, which felt much more spacious than its humble square footage would suggest, thanks to high ceilings and glass walls with views of the surrounding trees. Each design-driven cabin is outfitted with a mini-fridge, comfy daybed, cozy blankets, modern shelving, and its own private seating area and firepit.

Yonder Hospitality also kept the drive-in movie theater...but they cleverly reimagined what “seating” can look like. Guests can now catch classic movies like Cool Hand Luke and 1980s favorites like E.T. from the comfort of one of nine classic cars kitted out with speakers, and heaters for chilly desert nights. (What type of wine pairs well with Reese’s Pieces? Visit the Airstream concession stand before the show starts to find out.) The backdrop? A stunning Utah desert landscape that’s worthy of a film set in and of itself.

Many other communal spaces and amenities were added, including a sleek, modern “lodge” with ample seating for groups to hang out and sip microbrews by the firepits, an oversized pool and hot tub, and high-end grills.

There are also two shared bathhouses…but if the term “communal bathrooms” makes you cringe, rest assured that these modern water closets, sinks, and outdoor showers are constantly cleaned, and feel more like the facilities at a spa than a state park.

The General Store sells an eclectic array of low- to high-end snacks – everything from 50-cent cylinders of Smarties and $1 boxes of Red Hots to sandwiches, salads, s’mores kits, and cheese and charcuterie platters, to complete par-cooked dinners ready to be thrown on a grill or campfire. There’s also a great selection of wine, beer, and bottles of bubbly. A cute vintage food truck serves up breakfast burritos, egg sandwiches, and French toast sticks every morning – plus burgers, chicken sandwiches, and ice cream on the weekends.

While the WiFi is reliable, the whole experience is designed to give guests the relaxed home base they need to enjoy the majestic natural landscape, and to travel back to the nostalgic feel of a simpler pre-cell phone era.

Yonder’s Vanlife/Campsite rates start at $59/night. RV site starting rate: $129/night. Cabins from $189/night. Airstreams start at $239/night. Visit stayyonder.com for more information and to book, and check out Yonder’s Instagram for additional photos.
