Tucked behind a canopy of live oaks sits an understated edifice. The building’s dull colors and subtle ornaments don’t accrue the same fanfare as Battle Hall, its esteemed sister, but upon a closer look, Garrison Hall stands as a pioneering chronicle of Texas history.

Larry Speck, professor of architecture, said credit for Garrison Hall’s character should go to its innovative Texan architect, Herbert Greene. Speck said Greene followed the architectural precedents set by Cass Gilbert in Battle and Sutton Hall, but he did so with a Texan touch.

“If Cass Gilbert was making buildings for a great university, Herbert Greene was making buildings for the University of Texas,” Speck said.

Greene took the universally academic ornamentation of Battle Hall and modified the iconography, Speck said. Garrison Hall housed the history department when it was built in 1926, Speck said, so it made sense for the icons to chronicle Texas history.

Speck said he identifies Garrison Hall’s ornaments during campus tours he leads for his course, Architecture and Society. Building details include the names of William B. Travis and Stephen F. Austin on the windows, as well as lonestars, bluebonnets and longhorn skulls.

Some of the most enigmatic emblems — Spanish and Texan cattle brands — adorn the entire building, Speck said.

“If you’re thinking of the history of Texas, you were thinking of the history of big ranches,” Speck said. “(Garrison Hall) is recording this wonderful story of Texas chronologically, from early ranches on the west face (of) the building (to) ranches of the (1926) era on the south face.”

Speck said the building’s positioning makes for another enigmatic feature — instead of directly across Battle Hall, Garrison Hall sits slightly south. At the time of its construction, Speck said, campus designers planned for the East Mall to serve as the University’s grand entry.

“Garrison Hall would have been the corner of this major East Mall and main plaza,” Speck said. “But they made the South Mall the primary mall and the East Mall much narrower. So now, Garrison Hall is this orphan sitting out there. That’s why it’s not symmetrical (with Battle Hall).”

Beyond its ornamentation and positioning, the building’s adaptation to its sloped topography while honoring Gilbert’s architectural precedent serves as a testament to Greene’s genius, Speck said.

“It’s one thing to put Sutton Hall on a flat piece of ground and make the Renaissance Palazzo thing work,” Speck said. “But then you go over to the site for Garrison and it falls 20 feet. Dealing with this steeply sloped site is pretty clever. When you’re on the main plaza, it looks like this very calm, sitting-on-solid-ground building, but then you get a little closer and you realize it tumbles way down.”

Speck said Greene, who also designed Gregory Gymnasium, Anna Hiss Gymnasium, Waggener Hall and Littlefield Dormitory, doesn’t get enough credit for his work.

“People think of Cass Gilbert and Paul Cret (the French-American architect who designed the Tower) and they think of Herbert Greene as this Texan boy in between,” Speck said. “But wow, he did a lot of buildings. And he did a lot of really, really nice buildings that were inspired by Cass Gilbert, but they’re inventive and creative.”

On July 14, 2023, Dan and Nancy Garrison, co-founders of Texas’ first legal whiskey distillery, Garrison Brothers, presented a check for $30,000.00 to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center to help fund efforts in research, preservation and public programming of native plants, and to continue Mrs. Johnson’s environmental legacy.

This exceptional bourbon creation was first aged for 4 years in new white American oak barrels before being infused with Burleson’s Texas Wildflower Honey for an 8-month period. The bourbon was then transferred to French XO Cognac casks, where it matured for an additional 3 years. Bottled at a potent 114 proof, Lady Bird Bourbon is hand-sealed with a distinct Prairie Purple wax.

The initial release, just over 5,900 bottles, helped raise awareness and funds. Garrison Brothers Distillery donates $5 for every bottle of Lady Bird that is sold to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. Each bottle is decorated with a packet of wildflower seeds and bourbon drinkers are encouraged to spread them across the country.

SALT LAKE CITY — A new study has revealed Utah as the state with the second-highest rate of high-speed fatal crashes, beaten only by Wyoming.

Research done by business litigation and personal injury lawyers Heninger Garrison Davis analyzed data compiled in 2021 by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to find which state had the highest proportion of fatal crashes where speed was a contributing factor.

Wyoming ranked number one with 28.34% of fatal crashes known to have high speeds be a contributing factor, Utah ranked close behind with 26.62% with Virginia ranked third with 26.49%.

In contrast, Idaho only had 4.1% of total fatal crashes to have high speeds be a contributing factor.

According to Utah Highway Patrol Sergeant Cameron Roden, Utah has seen an upward trend of high-speed fatal crashes since 2020, a year before the NHTSA FARS 2021 National Dataset that Heninger Garrison Davis referenced.

"2020 is where we really saw that dramatic increase and we've seen some improvements in 2023 due to some legislative changes," said Roden. "But it's still something that's way too high."

Specifically, the incidents of speeding across Utah where drivers were found to have gone well over 100 miles per hour. Often times get into serious accidents and even fatal crashes.

In Heninger Garrison Davis's study, Utah's 26.62% of total fatal crashes leave the state with a rate 53.41% above the national average for high-speed fatal crashes.

“The faster you travel, the less time you have to react to developing situations on the road, making a collision much more likely. Traveling at a higher speed also makes it significantly harder to stop or maneuver around a collision ahead of you," commented a spokesperson for the law firm.

They also believe leaving an appropriate amount of space between your vehicle and those around you also give you more time to react to changing circumstances, including a possible collision ahead of you.

"We can't enforce our way out of this problem," said Roden. "We need the public's compliance and self-compliance to be able to make a difference in those fatal crashes and fatal numbers."

Sgt. Roden believes one opportunity will be during the Memorial Holiday where law enforcement expects to have more drivers on the road.

"There's going to be impaired driving enforcement, speed enforcement all going on throughout the holiday weekend," said Roden. "We'll be out there to do our part but we definitely need to work together."

Owens Loop Trail in the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve

Location: Red Cliffs Desert Reserve a few blocks north of downtown St. George

Difficulty: Easy with some up and down sections over uneven ground

Elevation: The trailhead elevation is 2,865 feet with an elevation change from the lowest to the highest point along the trail of 330 feet.

Getting There: In St. George, go north on Main Street until you come to the end of the road at Brooks Nature Park, 452 North Main Street.

From Washington, go west on Red Hills Parkway and turn left (south) on 1000 East Street in St. George. Go one block and turn right (west) onto St. George Boulevard. Proceed west and turn right (north) on Main Street. (Main Street is between 100 East Street and 100 West Street.) Stay on Main Street until reaching the end of the road at Brooks Nature Park (452 North Main Street).

In short, make your way to Main Street in St. George and go north to the end of the road.

My wife, Deb, and I often drive an hour or more to reach the trailhead of a particularly interesting hike, it’s always worth the effort. This adventure is close to home, so close the trailhead is within the St. George city limits. Aww, can’t be much if it is that close. On the contrary, this is an easy 3.5-mile round trip hike with panoramic vistas and varied red rock structures. What is this close-by trail?

Owens Loop Trail, with the trailhead at Brooks Nature Park. Just north of downtown St. George, Owens Loop Trail begins within St. George city limits. It quickly enters the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve. The hike is free and no permit necessary.

The Reserve was established in 1996 to protect a large and diverse habitat capable of sustaining wildlife populations threatened by development and habitat loss. It comprises 62,000 acres and has more than 130 miles of shared-use trails for hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking. Three ecosystems—the Mojave Desert, the Great Basin Desert, and the Colorado Plateau—merge in southwestern Utah and the Reserve reflects the biological diversity of this unique region. The Red Cliffs Desert Reserve Habitat Conservation Plan is administered by Washington County in coordination with the Bureau of Land Management, the US Fish and Wildlife Service, Utah Department of Natural Resources, and the Utah School and Institutional Trust Lands Administration.

Brooks Nature Park, the trailhead for our hike, is the site of the original water source for early St. George settlers. Water percolating from the surrounding red cliffs creates natural springs and a small pond complete with ducks.

We arrived at the nature park at about 9:00 am. There is a small, six or seven spaces, the parking area at the front of the park which does not have water or toilets. The temperature was in the high 50s under blue Utah sky. The trailhead elevation is 2,865 feet with an elevation change from the lowest to the highest point along the trail of 330 feet.

We quickly explored the small park, and (facing the pond) headed left around the pond on a broad path. We stopped at the pond and exchanged “good mornings” with some ducks and a giant white swan.

At the north end of the path, about 100 yards from the parking area, is a small amphitheater and a large information sign reading “Welcome to Red Cliffs Desert Reserve.” Next to the sign was an Owens Loop trail sign. We headed north up the trail in a small, narrow canyon overgrown with a riot of different plants. This section was the steepest of the entire hike. After about ¼ mile we came to the end of the canyon up against Red Hills Parkway. There is a stepover and another trail sign for Owens Loop heading southwest.

The trail later jogs northwest and finally in a loopy western direction along the top of red cliffs. The cliffs dominate the northern skyline in St. George, hence great views of the town and surrounding area. In places, the trail proceeds close to the cliff edge, be careful. There are also a few short steep sections requiring some easy rock scrambling. Much of the trail is rocky and/or over uneven layers of Slickrock. Some of the trail is up and down, but never very difficult. The western section of the trail is often faint.

Being early spring, birds were out hunting for a late breakfast and lizards scampered across rocks, warming in the sun trying not to be a late breakfast.

About one mile in is a junction with City Creek Trail, another access to Owens Loop Trail.

The trail atop the cliffs is peppered with a plethora of small caves and cavities in the red rock—great foreground views. The background views are spectacular, especially as we traversed the loop part of the trail.

The westernmost part of the trail, the loop, features clear views of Red Mountain, parts of Snow Canyon State Park, Ivins, Santa Clara, and the Dixie Red Hills Golf Course. To the south were panoramic views of St. George.

Our 3.5-mile round trip hike took a little more than two hours at a leisurely pace with many opportunities to stop and take photos. Although not deserted for a mid-week hike, we encountered only 11 people on the trail. And except for the distant faint hum of traffic from below, this is a wilderness experience.

I strongly recommend this adventure—an easy hike featuring great views and, typical of Utah, appealing red rock structures. You can’t get much closer to civilization and still feel as if you are in the backcountry.
