LEARNING AT HOME

We are thrilled to announce the 48th season of Scholastic Scrimmage, this November! We welcome back host David Graf and more than 20 high schools from around the region in this televised academic quiz show. At the end of the season, the top two schools win cash prizes for their schools, provided by program partner grants. The first place school receives $4,000 and the second place school receives $2,000 for their scholarship fund.

We partner with the schools to bring families together for in-school and after school learning around PBS resources.

Raising Readers is a 3-part workshop hosted at participating schools over a 3-week period. Engaging both caregivers and students, PBS39 trained facilitators incorporate TV programming, hands on learning activities and online content to inspire caregivers to become more involved in their child's education.

The PBS39 Media Lab is an intensive digital storytelling workshop. It is a synchronous eight week virtual program that will immerse student teams in pre-production, production, and post-production as they work together with a cohort of Filmmaking Mentors to create “moving self-portraits''. PBS39 Media Lab is brought you through the generous support of The Donald B. and Dorothy L. Stabler Foundation and sponsored by St. Luke's Pediatrics.

The Crazy 8’s after-school math club makes learningfun with hands-on activities that give meaning toclassroom concepts, helping children become successfullater in life, especially in STEM careers. The currentprogram targets students in grades K-5; the program hasimpacted 182 students this year.

Explore the newly rededicated Lenape Trail and PBS39 digital “Tour and Explore” alongside 10-year old Molly Mabray, an Alaska Native from the PBS KIDS program MOLLY OF DENALI®.

Through QR codes on trail panels, interact with nature while learning the Native way to speak the language of the plants, honor the wisdom of the trees, and listen to the stories of the ancestors. At the end, visit the Museum of Indian Culture to barter for a gift to commemorate your journey and receive additional digital opportunities for continued learning with MOLLY OF DENALI®.

This story time, done entirely in Spanish, promotes literacy and exposure to the arts. Each week facilitators from the Spanish Immersion Learning Center read books in Spanish to kids, followed by a related craft project.Arte en Español is now continuing digitally as part of #AAMathome. The Information Equity Initiative provides the backbone for a system to transmit interactive programming and text to students in households that lack sufficient broadband access - a number that is estimated may be as high as one in four students nationwide. This is also known as datacasting.

The Manheim Township High School Key Club ended its administrative year at the 73rd annual Pennsylvania Key Club District Convention held March 29-31 in Pittsburgh.

Manheim Township Key Club members served an annual total of 4,929 hours through a variety of service opportunities. At the convention, the high school received the following recognition:

— Named one of seven distinguished clubs in the state for its outstanding overall service, fundraising and leadership

— Bill Brandamore Kiwanis Family Award for the club’s work with the Lititz Area Kiwanis Club

— UNICEF Banner Patch for raising $1,485 for The Eliminate Project (helping to eradicate neonatal/maternal tetanus in developing countries).

— Fourth-most service hours, 934, and second-most money raised, $4,084, for the Youth Serving Youth Project.

All club officers were recognized as distinguished in their positions: president, Shruti Nair; vice president, Emma Dieterle; secretary, Lauren Martin; treasurer, Adam Thompson; and editor, Nicole Honrade.

Reghan Radmore received the Bob Bagans Unsung Hero Award as the outstanding nonofficer club member in the Key Club division. She was also recognized with the fourth-most service hours by an individual member in Pennsylvania, with 253.5.

Elyse Gallagher received the Sandy Nininger Award as the most outstanding club member in the state.

Lauren Kaufman concluded her second and final year as a lieutenant governor on the board of the Pennsylvania Key Club District as representative for clubs in Lancaster and Lebanon counties. Manheim Township will continue to be represented at the state level by Elyse, who will serve as a lieutenant governor for 2019-20.

National Honor Society

Manheim Township High School seniors Brian Hoffman, Eric Lai, Luke Mundorf, Shruti Nair, Nidhi Patel, Vasudha Patel, Michael Steger, Adam Thompson, Le Ai Nhi Truong and Tyler Vicidomini have been inducted into the National Honor Society.

Yes, these places do accommodate and attract the upper class. But you might be surprised by some of the cities and towns across the United States that outbid those big cities.

Gibson Island

Micron is shipping samples of memory chips fabricated with its 1β (1-beta) production node, claiming it delivers better performance, bit density, and power efficiency, while remaining coy about the exact dimensions involved.

The memory chipmaker said its 1β DRAM technology node achieved "mass production readiness" in September, and it has since dispatched LPDDR5X samples to its smartphone manufacturer and chipset customers for products expected to come to market in 2023.

In the future, Micron will expand the memory products manufactured on this node, from LPDDR to DDR5 to HBM and graphics memory. The 1β products will be manufactured initially at Micron's fabrication plant in Hiroshima, Japan.

The first LPDDR5X products boast a 16Gb per die capacity and a data rate of 8.5Gbps, and are claimed to deliver a 15 percent power efficiency improvement and upwards of a 35 percent bit density improvement when compared with products manufactured with the previous 1α (1-alpha) process node technology.

According to Micron's vice president of DRAM process integration, Thy Tran, this was achieved through the use of cutting-edge pattern multiplication techniques, new processes, new materials, and more advanced equipment to shrink down the memory cell array.

"We can aggressively scale both the memory cell in terms of size, but also the rest of the circuitry in the die to save space and deliver the smallest die possible for a given density while optimizing for power and performance improvements," said Tran.

Beyond mobile, 1β will enable low-power, high-performance DRAM for a wide range of applications from mobile phones to intelligent vehicles and datacenters, Micron claimed.

But when asked to explain what 1α and 1β mean in terms of actual sizes and scaling, Micron declined to be drawn, with Tran responding: "I can definitely say that this is more aggressive than the 1α shrink, and I'll leave it at that."

“It's not always about the exact dimensions and size of either the memory cell or the die, and in the end it's about delivering higher density at a competitive cost point, and meeting the performance and power efficiency that the customer needs,” she added.

Micron did reveal that the 1β production node does not use extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography, as had been expected by some in the industry, but this is likely to happen with the following 1γ (1-gamma) node technology.

"Our strategy is to deploy [EUV] at the right time. We can foresee that our 1γ node will intersect EUV, but we continue to evaluate in terms of performance and cost points, but that is definitely on the map," Tran said.

The question of node size is a vexed one as far as DRAM goes, as explained by The Register's sister site Blocks & Files. This is because DRAM relies on charge stored on capacitors to represent individual bits, and shrinking those capacitors below a certain size means that they cease to function as required.

For this reason, DRAM components have been stuck at process nodes of 10nm or above for several years, and shrinking much further will likely require a breakthrough in new materials.

Earlier this month, Micron unveiled plans for a $100 billion memory chip fabrication plant in New York State, the building of which will take at least 20 years.

For the near term, however, Micron is cutting investment in additional production capacity, in line with many other memory chipmakers, as the economic outlook worsens. It said it will cut capex for next year by more than 30 percent to about $8 billion. ®
