WEST CHESTER, Pa. (WPVI) -- A mobility device manufactured in Chester County, Pennsylvania, is helping people transition from sitting to standing and remain mobile, offering an alternative to traditional walkers and wheelchairs.
Zeen, a device that is part walker and part wheelchair, is assembled at a West Chester factory using hundreds of individual parts tailored to each buyer.
The device has been helping people remain mobile for years, according to company officials.
"We started in that little facility, which you'll see across the way, and couldn't originally make 1 or 2 Zeens a day. I think we're up to 500 a month or something like that," co-founder Garrett Brown said.
Brown said the idea for Zeen came while visiting his father and observing people who relied on wheelchairs and walkers.
"And I was hanging with my dad and his cohort, and they're on wheelchairs and walkers, and nobody's very happy about either one of them. And I looked at that. I said, there has to be something better than the," Brown said.
Zeen was founded in 2016, and the device was commercially launched five years later.
Describing the engineering behind the product, Brown said developing the device presented significant challenges.
"It's a lovely puzzle to get to a machine like this that's economical and that every part pulls its weight and does its job and is lightweight and relatively inexpensive. And this took some work, I can tell you. I, you know, it's the hardest thing I've ever done, from every aspect of it to get the wheels right, to get the wonderful, dual-state casters in the back, because you can't have ordinary four-wheel casters; they just wander. The dual-state casters go straight like a dream, and then can back up and change their axle angle to back up," he said.
Brown also highlighted one of the device's features that allows users to adjust and secure its height.
"And my favorite invention of all in the scene is how it how it locks up at any given height," he said. "Here are these very clever rows of holes. And pins are simply released from the holes and inserted into the holes to stop it at any height, including whatever you set."
Demonstrating the device's maneuverability, Brown said, "So now I can want. Like an also closed. And I have a tremendous amount of agility. It turns in its own length. It goes sideways. It goes forward. And of course, you've got bricks."
Brown is also known for inventing the Steadicam, which has been used for decades in films, television productions and sports broadcasts.
Since Zeen entered production, Brown said the device has helped adults and children with mobility issues.
"I don't know how many exactly we've made today, but we've made thousands of them. And we were excited when we got to number 100. It's amazing. They're everywhere," Brown said.
He added that the company frequently hears from people who use the device on the job.
"You know, being behind the counter at a store or at a parts depot. We keep hearing about people that use it for work, you know, teachers, people, people in a doctor's office," Brown said.
Brown said manufacturing the product in Pennsylvania remains important to him.
"It's hugely important to me that it happened here in the States, first of all, and in Pennsylvania secondly. And in Philadelphia, which is dear to my heart," he said.
As production continues in Chester County, Brown said the device is helping users regain mobility and return to daily activities and professional roles.

Founder Allison Owen, 47, opened Turks Head Wines after spending 20 years in human capital management and cloud software consulting. In 2022, she left, longing to enter the wine world. “I had lost the fire in my belly and was looking for a new challenge,” she said.
“I started a California wine label while living in West Chester, with the concept to really bring the West Coast wine tasting experience to the East Coast,” she said. The label is named for West Chester’s historic moniker, which was a nod to a watering hole called Turks Head Inn (also known as Turks Head Tavern), built in 1769. “I felt like there were a lot of people that are very curious about learning more about wine, but aren’t necessarily ready to invest in making a trip across the country. So I decided to bring the California wine world to them.”
Owen opened her tasting room in 2024, after construction was completed on a building that has known many lives: Built in 1880, it was once a market house. During World War II, it was a packing plant for the penicillin produced in West Chester. It later became a mechanic’s garage and then a co-working office space.
All Turks Heads’ wine is produced and bottled in California and sent via refrigerated trucks to Pennsylvania. The arrangement is permitted due to Owen’s Pennsylvania limited winery license as well as her California wine manufacturing license. Turks Head Wine houses many plush, tasting lounges within its cavernous space, some only open to members of their wine club.
The barrels in their basement sit empty, but are labeled with bronze plaques of their wine club’s founding members — the first 46 people to join. (One barrel bears the names of Anna Congdon and Saquon Barkley.) Wine club members commit to purchasing 12 bottles per year. New wines are released every spring and fall.
Initially, Turks Head Wines’ tasting room only served cheese and charcuterie to pair with their portfolio of 30-something wines, which include whites, reds, and rosés. “But people wanted us to offer more,” said Owen.
She added a hood system and hired a chef, Dave McDonald, who previously worked at Laurel Creek Country Club in Mt. Laurel and Helm BYOB. Unlike most restaurants, where wine pairings are meant to complement the food, at Turks Head Wines, the food is intended to pair with the wine. They now offer two prix-fixe menus, a three-course menu for $55 and a four-course menu for $75. Current fall offerings include a gnocchi sardi with butternut squash and Kennett Square mushrooms, roasted chicken breast, braised pork shoulder with a Turks Head red wine porcini sugo, and an array of desserts and small plates. The wines themselves are frequently integrated into the dishes, whisked into vinaigrettes and sauces.
“The prix fixe menu feels like a natural extension of how we want people to experience Turks Head Wines,” said Owen, “We want guests to settle in, try a few different dishes and wines, and make an evening of it. Wine is always our starting point, and this gives people the freedom to build their own experience around what they’re excited to drink and eat.”
Turks Head Wines’ tasting room and restaurant are open Wednesdays and Thursdays from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., Fridays from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., Saturdays from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The company recently opened its newest Pennsylvania location, located at 1395 Boot Road, West Chester, PA 19380. The approximately 11,000-square-foot store is now open for business as the team prepares for a three-day Grand Opening Celebration scheduled for Friday, October 23 through Sunday, October 25, 2026.

The West Chester store features Ace Hardware’s new ELEVATE BBQ and Power layouts, designed to provide an enhanced shopping experience in two of the store’s key destination categories.
The new store is located in East Goshen Township and expands Costello’s presence in the Keystone State. Founded by Vincent Costello in Deer Park, New York, in 1973, Costello’s Ace Hardware has grown from a single neighborhood hardware store into one of the largest family-owned Ace Hardware organizations in the country. Today, the company serves communities throughout New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware and Virginia.
Henrico, Va.
Costello's Ace also has opened up shop in Henrico, Va., located at 9085 Staples Mill Road in Staples Mill Square. The store officially opened its doors to customers on Friday, October 9.
The new approximately 12,000-square-foot location is led by Store Manager Kathryn Menend. A Grand Opening Celebration will be held on Friday, November 6 through Sunday, November 8, 2026.
