A Thomasville family and their out-of-town guests remain stranded after Wednesday rain destroyed their driveway and cut off access to the main road.
THOMASVILLE, N.C. — UPDATE (10 a.m., July 11): According to property owner Philip Young, there's some equipment coming to assist with recovery efforts.
A Thomasville family and their friends visiting from Florida are stranded at the end of Quail Hollow Drive after intense rain caused their pond to flood and washed away the driveway to their house.
Philip Young, who has lived on the property for nearly 25 years, said it all happened in a matter of hours.
"The magnitude of this is overwhelming and kind of hard to look at and believe, but we'll persevere, and, with the help of our friends, we'll get through it," said Young.
When the group returned from dinner around 8 p.m. on Tuesday, everything was still intact, but the rain was coming down. Young said he went to check on the driveway around 11, and the damage was already done — the bridge connecting their driveway to the road swept away along with their pond water.
Young plans to install a pipe in the trench to redirect water before rebuilding the driveway. Until then, the group remains stuck.
Despite the damage, the family still has power and plenty of food and water. The home itself avoided flood damage. Neighbors have stopped by to offer help — some calling on the phone, others yelling across the trench to check in.
"I've been getting phone call after phone call and text after text and people just saying 'let me know if we can help, let me know if we can help,' it's just that makes your heart feel good," said Young.
The group has stayed optimistic, recognizing a silver lining in getting to spend more time with friends who would have otherwise already left.
“It’s actually a blessing that they’re here, because they’re helping us get through it.”

THOMASVILLE, N.C. – Leaders from Novant Health gathered with members of the community Tuesday to celebrate the opening of Novant Health Wellness & Education Thomasville, a multispecialty outpatient facility in Davidson County.
The new healthcare facility, located on the corner of Novant Health Thomasville Medical Center’s campus, is designed to expand access to needed services – including behavioral health, diabetes management, lactation support for new moms, occupational medicine and physical therapy – for patients across its rural communities.
“This new wellness space redefines holistic care in Davidson County by extending our reach beyond the traditional walls of the hospital,” said Chris Brown, president and chief operating officer of Novant Health Thomasville Medical Center. “We’re focused on providing proactive, community-based support that empowers our patients to lead healthier lives. Ultimately, we want our patients to know that they’re not alone, and that we’re here to provide expert care, resources and encouragement as they work toward their individual healthcare goals.”

Dr. Thomas Henderson Byrnes Jr, age 87, passed away on June 21, 2025 at his home in Thomasville. He was born on August 19, 1937 at Watts Hospital in Durham, NC, where his father was the Pathologist. Both of his parents were born in 1898, his dad in New York, just after his family settled, after leaving Ireland in the mid 1850’s. His mom was born in Wadesboro, NC of Scotch-Irish settlers. At that time, he had two older sisters, Cassie and Betty, who were 12 and 7 years older.
His early years were during the 2nd World War, with one year in Hartsville, SC, while his dad was overseas in Panama, in the Navy. They spent most of the war at the Naval Hospital at Camp LeJeune, NC, where Tom started school. They returned to their home in Charlotte, NC, where he attended Delworth Elementary School, then Alexander Graham, Jr. High and graduated from Charlotte Central High School, Class of 1955. He then attended Princeton University in New Jersey, graduating with an AB in Political Science in 1959. Then attended Duke University Medical School and graduated in 1963, with his MD. Dr. Byrnes completed his training in Internal Medicine in the Navy at the US Naval Hospital, San Diego, California. In 1970, he was discharged from the Navy and joined Thomasville Medical Associates in Thomasville, NC, where he practiced for 28 years until his retirement in December 1998.
Tom was born with a talent for singing and acting. He was first a boy soprano in St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Charlotte, then as a member of Myers Park Presbyterian Church, and finally 1st Presbyterian Church of Thomasville, NC where he served as an Elder. He performed with Princeton Glee Club and Choir and Duke Choir and Chancel Singers, New Atlanta Singers and Thomasville Players Theater group. He also served on the Shakespeare Festival Board, the Thomasville Hospital Foundation, and had a love for scuba diving and underwater photography.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son, Thomas “Tommy” Byrnes, III; and two sisters, Catherine McAden and Elizabeth Sanders.
Surviving is his wife of 41 years, Shirley Harris Nichols Byrnes, who he married in 1984. Also surviving are his four children, Frances Byrnes Bassett, Carol Anne Byrnes, Steven Lynn Grimm and wife Allison Moore, and Beverly Grimm Wright; five granddaughters, Carley Byrnes, Kailyn Wright, Anna Grace Wright and wife Juli, Alex Clampi and husband Joey, and Samantha Grimm; and six nieces, Florence McAden, Marie Weatherford, Rebecca Hudson, Catherine Reed, Betsy Turner, and Martha Foster.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 28, 2025 at 11:00 AM at First Presbyterian Church in Thomasville with Rev. Susanne Martin officiating. A casual reception will follow the service in the church fellowship hall. To stay true to his Irish heritage, there will be an old-time Irish Wake at the family’s home from 4:00 to 6:00 PM on Friday afternoon. A city in North Carolina and a district attorney’s office covering four counties in Georgia are both dealing with operational issues related to recent cyberattacks.
Thomasville, North Carolina, home to about 30,000 residents, said essential services will still be available but many city systems will be offline due to a cyberattack.
The city explained Thursday in a statement that an attack targeted its municipal systems. It is currently “unclear whether any sensitive information has been accessed or compromised,” officials said.
The IT department is working with a cybersecurity firm to assess how widespread the attack is and how long the recovery will take.
Thomasville is about 30 minutes south of Winston-Salem, which had its own city systems knocked offline by a cyberattack in January.
City Manager Michael Brandt said Thomasville notified state and federal authorities about the attack. North Carolina is one of only a handful of states to have a law explicitly banning government entities from paying ransoms associated with ransomware attacks.
About three hours south in Georgia, the Ogeechee Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office warned the counties it governs about phone and internet outages impacting its work.
The office published updates in local newspapers and on social media saying its operations are limited and several offices will be closed as it deals with a cyberattack that began on Tuesday morning.
Georgia’s judicial system is split into 10 regional districts where court administration is run locally. The Ogeechee district covers four counties that are home to about 180,000 people, the most populated being Effingham and Bulloch counties.
Most of the district’s offices will be closed for the next five days as investigations are held and systems are recovered. Officials warned that residents should expect the restoration timeline to change and said staff members will have “limited ability to check emails as well as appear in court.”
Some courts will still be open and state law enforcement agencies have been notified of the incident.
The statement notes that the office was previously told it needed to implement a backup system “specifically to guard against this type of event” but did not because of cost concerns.
“It wasn’t until the final month of the prior administration, in December 2024, that efforts to secure a comprehensive backup system were initiated. Given the volume of sensitive data, the backup process is complex and takes several months to complete,” the office said.
New District Attorney Robert Busbee has since prioritized cybersecurity, allowing the office to limit the recent attack in some ways and prevent “what could have been catastrophic data loss.”
“That decision proved crucial this morning, as it allowed IT specialists to detect the cyber intrusion in real time and intervene before any significant data could be compromised,” he said in a statement.

The City of Thomasville is investigating a potential cybersecurity incident.
City officials said the potential cybersecurity incident could involve its municipal systems.
“Upon identification of suspicious activity within the City’s digital infrastructure, immediate action was taken to contain the situation and initiate a thorough investigation,” Deputy City Manager Eddie Bowling said in a news release posted on the city’s site.
City officials said they’re also working with IT personnel and third-party cybersecurity experts to “assess the scope and nature of the incident.” They said it’s unclear if any sensitive information was accessed or compromised. City officials said some systems may experience temporary disruptions as “security protocols are strengthened and forensic reviews are completed.”
Officials said public safety will continue to operate without interruption.
“We take the security of our systems and the privacy of our residents very seriously,” said Michael Brandt, City Manager. “Our top priority is to protect the integrity of our information systems and ensure transparency with the public.”
