Home Care Rolling Prairie, IN

They say that your golden years are the best years of your life. For most older Americans, that's how it should be - a time to relax, reflect, and live life in a familiar place. After all, senior citizens in the U.S. have worked tirelessly to build a better economy, serve their communities, and raise families.

However, as seniors grow older, completing daily tasks like showering and enjoying activities such as visiting the historic Door Prairie Barn gets harder without someone by their side. Unfortunately, many older Americans aren't able to rely on their adult children for help. The reality in today's world is that family members do not have the skills or time to dedicate to caring for their parents. That's where Always Best Care Senior Services comes in.

Our in-home care services are for people who prefer to stay at home as they grow older but need ongoing care that family or friends cannot provide. More and more older adults prefer to live far away from long-term, institutionalized facilities and closer to the place where they feel most comfortable - their home. “We used ABC several years ago for my dad, after he had a stroke. I called a few months ago to set up a care plan for my elderly mom. She had a hip replaced, and lives alone. What is Non-Medical Senior Care in Rolling Prairie, IN?

lm-check

Home is where the heart is. While that saying can sound a tad cliche, it is especially true for many seniors living in America. When given a choice, older adults most often prefer to grow older at home. An AARP study found that three out of four adults over the age of 50 want to stay in their homes and communities as they age.

lm-check

When you begin to think about why, it makes sense. Home offers a sense of security, comfort, and familiarity.

lm-check

The truth is, as we age, we begin to rely on others for help. When a family is too busy or lives too far away to fulfill this role, in-home senior care is often the best solution. Home care services allow seniors to enjoy personal independence while also receiving trustworthy assistance from a trained caregiver.

lm-check

At Always Best Care, we offer a comprehensive range of home care services to help seniors stay healthy while they get the help they need to remain independent. As your senior loved one gets older, giving them the gift of senior care is one of the best ways to show your love, even if you live far away.

Respite Care

Respite Care Services

According to AARP, more than 53 million adults living in the U.S. provide care to someone over 50 years old. Unfortunately, these caregivers experience stress, exhaustion, and even depression. Our respite care services help family caregivers address urgent obligations, spend time with their children, and enjoy nearby activities. Perhaps more importantly, respite care gives family members time to recharge and regroup. Taking personal time to de-stress reduces the risk of caregiver burnout. So, if you've always wanted to eat at the local Jennie Rae's or visit Rolling Prairie, don't feel bad. Doing so is great for both you and your loved one.

At the end of the day, our goal is to become a valuable part of your senior's daily routine. That way, we may help give them the highest quality of life possible. We know that staying at home is important for your loved one, and we are here to help make sure that is possible.

Aging in Place: The Preferred Choice for Most Seniors

While it's true that some seniors have complicated medical needs that prevent them from staying at home, aging in place is often the best arrangement for seniors and their families. With a trusted caregiver, seniors have the opportunity to live with a sense of dignity and do so as they see fit - something that is unavailable to many older people today.

In-home care makes it possible for millions of seniors to age in place every year. Rather than moving to a strange nursing home, seniors have the chance to stay at home where they feel the happiest and most comfortable.

Here are just a few of the reasons why older men and women prefer to age at home:

How much does a senior's home truly mean to them?

A study published by the American Society on Aging found that more than half of seniors say their home's emotional value means more than how much their home is worth in monetary value. It stands to reason, then, that a senior's home is where they want to grow old.

With the help of elderly care in Rolling Prairie, IN, seniors don't have to age in a sterilized care facility. Instead, they can age gracefully in the place they want to be most: their home. In contrast, seniors who move to a long-term care facility must adapt to new environments, new people, and new systems that the facility implements. At this stage in life, this kind of drastic change can be more harmful than helpful.

Institutional care facilities like nursing homes often put large groups of people together to live in one location. On any given day, dozens of staff members and caregivers run in and out of these facilities. Being around so many new people in a relatively small living environment can be dangerous for a seniors' health and wellbeing. When you consider that thousands of seniors passed away in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, opting for in-home care is often a safer, healthier choice for seniors.

Aging in place has been shown to improve seniors' quality of life, which helps boost physical health and also helps insulate them from viral and bacterial risks found in elderly living facilities.

For many seniors, the ability to live independently with assistance from a caregiver is a priceless option. With in-home care, seniors experience a higher level of independence and freedom - much more so than in other settings like a nursing home. When a senior has the chance to age in place, they get to live life on their own terms, inside the house that they helped make into a home. More independence means more control over their personal lives, too, which leads to increased levels of fulfillment, happiness, and personal gratification. Over time, these positive feelings can manifest into a healthier, longer life.

More independence, a healthier life, and increased comfort are only a few benefits of aging in place. You have to take into consideration the role of cost and convenience. Simply put, it's usually easier and more affordable to help seniors age in place than it is to move them into an institutional care facility. According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, seniors who age in the comfort of their homes can save thousands of dollars per month.

In-home care services from Always Best Care, for instance, are often less expensive than long-term solutions, which can cost upwards of six figures per year. To make matters worse, many residential care facilities are reluctant to accept long-term care insurance and other types of payment assistance.

With Always Best Care's home care services, seniors and their families have a greater level of control over their care plans. In-home care gives seniors the chance to form a bond with a trusted caregiver and also receive unmatched care that is catered to their needs. In long-term care facilities, seniors and their loved ones have much less control over their care plan and have less of a say in who provides their care.

Affordable Care

In-home care is a valuable resource that empowers seniors to age in place on their own terms. However, a big concern for many families and their loved ones is how much in-home care costs. If you're worried that in-home care is too expensive, you may be pleasantly surprised to learn that it is one of the most affordable senior care arrangements available.

Typically, hiring an Always Best Care in-home caregiver for a few hours a week is more affordable than sending your loved one to a long-term care facility. This is true even for seniors with more complex care needs.

At Always Best Care, we will work closely with you and your family to develop a Care Plan that not only meets your care needs, but your budget requirements, too. Once we discover the level of care that you or your senior need, we develop an in-home care plan that you can afford.

In addition to our flexible care options, families should also consider the following resources to help offset potential home care costs:

If your loved one qualifies, Medicaid may help reduce in-home care costs. Review your IN's Medicaid program laws and benefits, and make sure your senior's financial and medical needs meet Medicaid eligibility requirements.
Attendance and aid benefits through military service can cover a portion of the costs associated with in-home care for veterans and their spouses.
Many senior care services like in-home care are included in long-term care insurance options. Research different long-term care solutions to find a plan that provides coverage for senior care.
Home care can be included as part of a senior's private insurance plan. Read over your loved one's insurance policy carefully or speak with their insurance provider to determine if in-home care is covered.
Depending on the life insurance plan, you may be able to apply your policy toward long-term care. You may be able to use long-term-care coverage to help pay for in-home elderly care.
 Senior Care Rolling Prairie, IN

Compassionate Care. Trusted Caregivers.

When you or your senior loved one needs assistance managing daily tasks at home, finding a qualified caregiver can be challenging. It takes a special kind of person to provide reliable care for your senior loved one. However, a caregiver's role involves more than meal preparation and medication reminders. Many seniors rely on their caregivers for companionship, too.

Our companion care services give seniors the chance to socialize in a safe environment and engage in activities at home. These important efforts boost morale and provide much-needed relief from repetitive daily routines. A one-on-one, engaging conversation can sharpen seniors' minds and give them something in which to be excited.

At Always Best Care, we only hire care providers that we would trust to care for our own loved ones. Our senior caregivers in Rolling Prairie, IN understand how important it is to listen and communicate with their seniors. A seemingly small interaction, like a short hug goodbye, can make a major difference in a senior's day. Instead of battling against feelings of isolation, seniors begin to look forward to seeing their caregiver each week.

Understanding the nuances of senior care is just one of the reasons why our care providers are so great at their job.

Unlike some senior care companies, our caregivers must undergo extensive training before they work for Always Best Care. In addition, our caregivers receive ongoing training throughout the year. This training ensures that their standard of care matches up to the high standards we've come to expect. During this training, they will brush up on their communication skills, safety awareness, and symptom spotting. That way, your loved one receives the highest level of non-medical home care from day one.

Assisted Living Referral Services

While it's true that many seniors prefer to age at home, sometimes in-home care isn't the best fit. For those seniors and their families, choosing an assisted living facility makes more sense. Unfortunately, finding the optimal care facility is easier said than done in today's day and age. That's when Always Best Care's assisted living referral services begin to make a lot of sense.

Assisted living is a form of housing intended for seniors who require varying degrees of medical and personal attention. Accommodations may include single rooms, apartments, or shared living arrangements. Assisted living communities are typically designed to resemble a home-like environment and are physically constructed to encourage the independence of residents.

Respite Care Rolling Prairie, IN

At assisted living communities, seniors receive help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and eating. They may also benefit from coordination of services with outside healthcare providers, and monitoring of resident activities to ensure their health, safety, and well-being. Caregivers who work at assisted living communities can also provide medication administration and personal care services for older adults.

Other services offered within assisted living communities can include some or all of the following:

  • Housekeeping
  • Laundry
  • Recreational Activities
  • Social Outings
  • Emergency Medical Response
  • Medication Monitoring
  • Family Visitation
  • Personal Care
 Caregivers Rolling Prairie, IN

At Always Best Care, our representatives can match your senior's emotional, physical, and financial needs with viable assisted living communities nearby. Results are based on comparative data, so you can select the best choice for you or your loved one.

Always Best Care works closely with local senior living communities to gain valuable knowledge that we then use to help seniors and their loved ones make informed decisions. This information can include basic care and rent, resident availability, and services provided. Because Always Best Care is compensated by these communities, we provide senior living referral services at no extra cost to you.

Some of the most popular assisted living communities to consider in our area include the following:

  • Plum Creek Supportive Living
  • Rolling Meadows Health & Rehabilitation Center
  • Prairie Lakes Health Campus
  • Rolling Prairie Mobile Home Pk
  • Timber Creek Village Assisted Living of Shelbyville
  • Prairie Village Nursing & Rehabilitation

For many seniors, moving into a senior living community revolves around how and when they want to make a transition to more involved care. (New Carlisle, IN) - Last week New Prairie’s school board tackled the thorny topic of age-appropriate books in school libraries.

On Monday, January 8th over two dozen people attended a public hearing as the board considered a petition to remove six books from the middle school library. These are the works called into question: Empire of Storms and Kingdom of Ash by Sarah J. Maas, The Infinite Moment of Us by Lauren Myracle, The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky, Rethinking Normal by Katie Rain Hill, and Tilt by Ellen Hopkins. Portions of their content contain foul (R-rated) language, substance abuse, violence, and graphic sexuality.

Some call it book banning. Others say weeding, or removing certain titles that are no longer relevant or useful, is a necessary process in libraries. Heather Oake, who brought the petition, says it’s just common sense and common decency. “We’re not banning books,” she said. “It’s [about being] age-appropriate. And if you want your child to have that kind of a book, you can buy it for them outside of school.”

At the meeting Oake read aloud passages from the books describing sexual acts in graphic detail. Only a couple of parents, besides Oake, spoke out against the books. Most people in attendance were in favor of keeping them on the shelves. At least ten people spoke in favor of what they consider “free speech.”

One of them was Jamie Talboom, grandmother of five New Prairie students. “Removing or banning books is a slippery slope to government censorship and the erosion of our country’s commitment to freedom of expression,” she told board members.

According to another speaker, Tom Pietrzak, not everyone’s values and literary standards are the same. “What we heard tonight may be a bit shocking; I’m not going to tell you that it shouldn’t be. But at the same time, time my opinion of what is shocking versus your opinion… may be different.” He stressed the importance of getting kids interested in reading. “Is it shocking? Yeah, sure it is. But at the same time, fostering the will and the want to read—you can’t do a better thing for your child.”

Sid Shroyer, a former New Prairie English teacher and member of the committee that reviewed the books, talked about Nazi Germany, book burning, and classic authors such as Mark Twain, Jack London, and Ernest Hemingway, whose books have been banned over the years. “The goal of book-banning,” he said, “is the numbing of the senses, seeking to destroy individuality and stifle curiosity.”

A committee of seven appointed New Prairie community members reviewed the books in question and made their recommendation to keep them in the middle school. The board agreed unanimously, with an exception. One title, The Infinite Moment of Us, by the suggestion of Superintendent Dr. Paul White, will be moved to the high school due to its graphic nature.

Oake said after the meeting that she felt there would have been less support for the books if the matter had been debated in December as originally planned. “I got a call the same day saying they were postponing it,” said Oak. “I personally believe that gave them time to get a lot of people to come.” She felt as though the matter should have been resolved last month, but was intentionally postponed.

Meetings like this one may become more common due to a new state law passed in May requiring public and charter schools to make public a list of their library books. New Prairie’s middle school library, as of May, reported 13,497 books in their collection. The new law also requires that schools offer a procedure for objecting to a book’s place in the collection if it can be deemed both “offensive” and “harmful to minors.”

At last week’s meeting, an attorney for the school district was present to read Indiana’s statutes on what is “obscene” and “harmful.” But the definitions are vague, and it ultimately comes down to community members to draw the line. When asked what would constitute a reason to remove a book, Superintendent White did not specify, saying the district would continue to rely on publisher recommendations and guidelines set by the American Library Association.

White did say that the high school has a new certified librarian who has been tasked with being more hands-on with K-8 library development. “I think a focus on certain books being a better selection at the high school as opposed to the middle school level will continue to be reviewed and considered,” he said.

When you put good food and originality together, you get Junction City Restaurant in Rolling Prairie. When you put a construction site next to it for 2 1/2 weeks, then you have a big problem.

"You have to make to make too many U-turns. You have to turn back into traffic and trucks, RV pullers are not going to want to do that," Junction City Restaurant owner Hiram Mitchell said.

Mitchell has owned Junction City at 5636 Highway 20 for 25 years.

Since the Indiana Department of Transportation began construction to Highway 20 to help decrease crashes in the area, Mitchell's customers have been cut in half, and so has his staff.

"It's heartbreaking. They've all become family to me. Got to tell them they can't come to work. 'I can't pay you. There's no business,'" Mitchell said.

Savannah Richie has works as a waitress at Junction City for one year. She says she loves her job and wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

"I need this. So, if this business goes under, then I'm going to have to go someplace else, and I don't really want to because I worked here for a year. I love this place," Richie said.

With blockage to the westbound lanes and no sign of the interstate opening back up until November, longtime customers like Huberd Coghill are worried Junction City won't be there at the end.

"I remember a lot of years and this a good ma-and-pa place to eat and they're going by the wayside," he said.

INDOT says the construction project should be no surprise, as they have been planning this out and have stated it publicly for years.

"When we're putting together a project like this over the course of several years, we make every effort to work with businesses and residents. They're often impacted by our project," INDOT Media Relations Director Adam Parkhouse said.

INDOT also says it is aware of the inconvenience it is for drivers to get to the restaurant. At the completion of the project, there will be dedicated turn lanes for both eastbound and westbound lanes leading into the restaurant.

INDOT also plans to add an overhead sign on Highway 20 to notify drivers Junction City Restaurant is ahead.

For now, temporary signs will be installed to assist drivers toward the restaurant until construction is complete.

"My goal was just to give a good plate of food to anybody who comes in here, and that's been taken away from me," Mitchell said.

Mitchell says he hopes his good food and unique restaurant will help give them the business they need to remain open.

(Rolling Prairie, IN) - Forget cicadas; In Rolling Prairie, it's a rat invasion they're worried about this summer. Many Rolling Prairie area residents have reported large rats, in the dozens or more, making themselves at home.

The rodent onslaught isn’t exactly of Biblical proportions, but it is a problem. Amanda Runion is spearheading an effort to report the vermin activity to the county. She says the health department identified the pests as Norway rats, which can be sixteen inches long from head to tail. Runion started noticing the large pests a few weeks ago. Others say the rats have been around since March or longer. One resident who lives on State Road 2 south of town claims to have caught nearly 50 rats, while another in-town resident says she has spent hundreds of dollars having them professionally trapped.

Some residents blame the municipal sewer system that recently went through town, but county officials say that isn’t likely. County Commissioner Rich Mrozinski says he investigated that possibility. "I talked to the Sewer Board about it. They said absolutely not. The sewer line's got absolutely nothing to do with the rat problem. Period."

Others link the problem to a couple of recently demolished grain silos. Steve Mrozinski, with the LaPorte County Co-op, says the county health department visited their facility Thursday and found no rats. The Co-op, Mrozinski says, has not stored grain for over six years, nor has it dismantled any silos.

Commissioner Mrozinski offers a different theory. He thinks garbage and debris left by county residents in yards and roadways are inviting a pest problem. In addition, he has received numerous complaints about untidy properties. "There's a lot of people here that are in need of a wake-up call from code enforcement," Mrozinski says. "Maybe that's got something to do with the rats. I don't know." Mrozinski has been outspoken in recent years about enforcing stricter property maintenance standards in the county.

Whatever the cause, Mrozinski says they’ll get to the bottom of the problem as more information is collected. "We're going to find out what's going on; we'll get to a conclusion because you don't want rats. That's not a good thing."

For now, county health officials need a tally of rat sightings. Runion has created a form to collect data and turn it over to the health department next Friday.

GREEN BAY – The fourth time was the charm for George Oudhuis.

The 63-year-old native of Rolling Prairie, Ind., was announced as the 23rd inductee into the Packers Fan Hall of Fame on Wednesday. It was the fourth time Oudhuis had been among the 10 finalists for the annual award.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, President/CEO Mark Murphy surprised Oudhuis with the news over a Zoom call, in lieu of the formal ceremony inside the Packers media auditorium.

Three times Oudhuis sat among those finalists at Lambeau Field and didn't hear his name get called. All those emotions rushed to the surface after Murphy informed him of his induction.

"I got choked up for a minute because it means so much to me," said Oudhuis from his home in Indiana. "It's something that I dreamed of and it's not just me; it's everybody that associates with me.

"Everybody has supported me so well. I had relatives in Europe who were voting for me over there. I had friends in France and Holland and Germany. It's completely amazing."

A devoted Packers fan since the age of 9, Oudhuis has collected Packers memorabilia for decades – from his original Ray Nitschke jersey to a litany of signed footballs and helmets. Nearly every autograph in his possession has come from in-person signings over the last 50 years.

While Oudhuis joked there isn't much available space on the walls inside his home, he does have a spot reserved for his Fan Hall of Fame plaque next to the key to the City of Green Bay Oudhuis received after helping unveil the street sign honoring Donald Driver Way in 2013.

"When you follow a team from when you're a little kid until today, I got to meet a lot of the older players and stuff," said Oudhuis, holding his plaque. "It's just been a fantastic ride. To get there three times and finally the fourth time, I'm just truly blessed and honored to have this in my hands right now."

Oudhuis has never lived in Wisconsin but developed a deep bond with the area. Despite the close calls, Oudhuis appreciated being able to come up three times to Lambeau Field to take part in the Fan Hall of Fame finalist festivities.

Even when he came up short a few times, Oudhuis' close friends and family continued to nominate him every year for the honor until he finally received this year's honor.

For his induction, Oudhuis will receive four club seats to a 2021 Packers home game; a $500 Packers Pro Shop gift certificate; a road trip for two to a 2021 Packers away game, including game tickets, air fare and hotel accommodations; and a one-year subscription to Packer Plus.

Most importantly, his name will be permanently displayed inside the Packers Hall of Fame.

"My parents are in heaven but I hope they're smiling down on me right now, knowing our names are going to go on that wall in Lambeau Field so years from now people can go and see it, and it's there," Oudhuis said. "It's completely amazing."

This year's other finalists included Jane Rietmann from Merrimac, Wis., Fred Ihlenfeldt Sr. from Kewaunee, Wis., Jeff Padon from Severn, Md., Ken Trinkner from De Pere, Wis., Leo DeGroot from West Bend, Wis., Patrick (Pat) Suplicki from Stevens Point, Wis., Bob Parker from Green Bay, Gene C. Lasch from Shawano, Wis., and Jeanne Beardsley from Ellsworth, Wis.
