CLOVER, S.C. — A Clover High school student is now in custody after a loaded handgun and knife were brought to campus, according to the Clover School District.

The York County Sheriff's Office confirmed that the student did not make any threats to anyone on campus.

The district says someone saw the weapons and immediately notified school staff. The school's resource officer detained the student and confiscated the weapons.

Clover High School was put on Hold Protocols as the student was removed from the building, according to the district. Classes did resume.

"We commend all individuals who made the staff aware of this situation," the statement reads. "As is always stated, we ask that if you see or hear something, say something. That is exactly what occurred today."

The Sheriff's office says the student is under the age of 18 and that the investigation is in its early stages. No reason for why the weapons were brought to campus have been released as of publication.

A farm-to-table restaurant in Clover, South Carolina, has been named to Yelp’s list of top 25 hot and new women-owned restaurants to visit in 2024.

Clover Harvest opened in May 2023 in what was a liquor store in the 1950s, when many communities in northern South Carolina were dry.

Alison Kim and her partner John Paoloca moved to the area from Philadelphia when Paoloca was transferred by American Airlines to work in the Admiral Club at the Charlotte Douglas International Airport, about 30 miles northeast of Clover.

They started looking at smaller towns and stumbled on Clover and a house they liked while still working in Charlotte. She has a marketing and sales background.

It took some months before Paoloca agreed he, too, was ready for their own restaurant, Kim said. The property Kim wanted was still available.

Kim’s mother, Jean, is also an investor in what became Clover Harvest.

Their goal is to use as many locally grown ingredients, including some from their own garden, as possible.

Executive chef Lynsey Comalander said she offers a daily special, which has brought in new customers to try dishes they’ve never had.

Comalander, a Clover native, worked for more than four years as a flight attendant and made it a point when she traveled to visit a variety of restaurants. A dish she made recently was her take on one she had in Puerto Rico and it was a big hit, she said.

She also runs a food truck in Clover called It’s Worth It, featuring tacos, paninis and potato cakes.

On its website, the restaurant says, “Clover Harvest offers a relaxed setting where laughter flows as freely as the conversation. Come as you are, and leave with a satisfied heart, a full stomach, and a smile.”

Kim said community is key, especially, giving back. They welcome students with special needs to learn job skills. They are going to partner with Clover High’s culinary arts school.

Any food they don’t use from their garden is given to a community organization and at the end of each night, leftover food is donated to the community fridge in downtown Clover.

Clover Harvest also partners with Rideability, a therapeutic horseback riding center for children and adults with disabilities as well as the many farms nearby.

“We are so grateful to be in this community,” Kim said.

LONGVIEW, N.C., December 8, 2023 (Newswire.com) - Hydrogen fuel equipment and solutions company OneH2 recently purchased a new manufacturing facility in Clover, SC. The facility was sold by Belmont Land and Investment Company, LLC, and includes both the 246,091 sq ft building and the surrounding 29.705 acres of land. The facility will be used for scaling OneH2’s manufacturing output to meet its existing order book and expected demand over the next three years. The new manufacturing facility will stimulate the local economy by providing new, high-paying jobs in the community.

“We are thrilled to continue our expansion with the purchase of the Clover, SC, facility,” said OneH2 VP of Product, Swapnil Revankar. “Our existing manufacturing facility in North Carolina is already operating at maximum. By opening this new facility, we will be able to scale our production and grow our hydrogen equipment footprint across the U.S. at a rapid pace.”

The facility is designed to manufacture H400 modular hydrogen production systems at scale, with dedicated lines for each sub-system - water treatment, steam methane reformation, gas purification, and compression. The Clover location is expected to hire a workforce that will reach 280 by January 2026. Projections indicate that by January 2026, the facility will produce over 100 units each of the H400 systems and ancillary equipment such as dispensers, hydrogen loading panels, and electricity generators.

This purchase comes as OneH2 continues to expand its infrastructure footprint across the country with new projects and partnerships. The company is expected to launch an exclusive Channel Partner program, a strategic distributor program providing select organizations direct access to OneH2’s specialized hydrogen equipment. This program is expected to drive the demand side for OneH2’s new manufacturing facility, ultimately accelerating the deployment of OneH2 equipment coast-to-coast. A key goal of the Channel Partner program is to establish a nationwide hydrogen infrastructure network providing cost-effective hydrogen fuel at parity to incumbent fuel sources in sectors such as materials handling, heavy transportation, and ports.

School district voters approved a $156 million bond referendum last fall, but since then, a site plan approval was denied twice.

CLOVER, S.C. — The clock is ticking for the Clover School District as it works to open a new $156 million high school by 2026.

"Year 2026 is not that far down the road," Clover School District COO Mark Hopkins said.

The bond referendum was approved last fall to fund a new high school in the Lake Wylie area, but since then, a site plan approval has been denied by the county for the second time.

"The timeline to build a high school is two and a half years, and it's a pretty tight timeline that seems to be getting tighter," Hopkins said. "I hope that we've gotten to a point now where we will be able to move forward,"

Hopkins said that if they aren’t moving ground by early next year, meeting the 2026 timeline will be a real challenge. He added that the school district has ironed out the kinks, with the biggest obstacles being things like landscaping, plan development agreement, and traffic impact analysis.

"Certainly a school generates traffic that's basically at peak times of the day, and we have to ensure we meet standards and mitigate them," Hopkins said.

District leaders are optimistic that the county will give a thumbs up, but the fear of possibly pushing back the deadline is concerning.

Now it's up to county leaders to decide whether or not to move forward with plans next month.

"We're hopeful we'll get some good news, at least to be able to start moving forward, which would certainly help our timeline," Hopkins said.

Plenty of work remains for the Clover School District to hit its opening date target for a second high school.

For the community, the name, mascot and school colors all must be worked out. For the district, it’s key approvals for the construction site that need to be sorted out.

School district voters approved a $156 million bond referendum last fall to fund a new high school in the Lake Wylie area, off the road that just changed from Daimler Boulevard to Cannonball Run. The planned 2,100-student school would open in 2026.

Mark Hopkins, the district chief operating officer, told the school board Monday night there are several pressing issues that will determine whether the district can hit that mark.

“We’re really backing up against our timeline for a ‘26 opening,” Hopkins said.

The high school site still needs U.S. Army Corps of Engineers permits. Hopkins expects feedback in February or March on culvert crossings on the site. The district also needs site plan approval from York County.

The district found out Oct. 18 that its second attempt at a site plan approval was denied by the county. District and county officials met, and a third submission was made Nov. 20. The main issues, Hopkins said, were a traffic impact analysis update and whether the construction plan could avoid the removal of large trees on the property.

“We hope to get some feedback on that in early December, and hopefully that feedback is good,” Hopkins said.

York County Council passed two of three votes needed to remove a requirement from a 2008 land development agreement that otherwise would make the school district connect Cannonball Run to West Liberty Hill Road through its property.

The district delayed bid opening for the site to this Thursday. Hopkins said final approvals from the county would allow a contractor to start moving dirt on the high school site as soon as possible.

All that phase one work involves the high school land. Phase two involves the building.

On Oct. 23, the district began soliciting requests from contractors. Building design is complete and construction cost estimates should be ready in mid-January, Hopkins said.

County approval of the site plan and road connection change, approval of a sewer pump station and markets for both labor and materials are all key questions that need to be resolved if the high school is to open on time.

Monday’s construction update follows one earlier this month on school naming and branding.

District public information officer Bryan Dillon updated the board Nov. 13 on a community survey that ran in October to get input on name, mascot and color options. The survey involved the new high school, but also a planned elementary and middle school.

The elementary and middle school surveys collected fewer than 800 responses. The high school survey alone brought in about 1,600 participants.

Dillon presented a list of nearly a dozen high school names that came up most often. Surveys went with Allison Creek, Bethel, Cannonball, Clay Hill, East Clover, Handsmill, Lake Wylie or Wylie, Liberty Hill, Oakridge, Riverside and Roosevelt. There were lots of responses in particular, Dillon said, for Lake Wylie.

“You do see a clear favorite there,” Dillon said.

Allison Creek was another popular name in the surveys.

As for the mascot, surveys went with continuity over creativity. Clover High School, which serves the entire district now, has the Blue Eagle as its mascot.

“Eagles did pop up a lot,” Dillon said. “That came in with some extra comments along with it — we’re all eagles, we’ve always been eagles, we should remain eagles, those sorts of things.”

Golden eagles was the most popular version on the new high school survey. Non-eagle options include gators, hawks and patriots.

“Wylie coyote came up a lot,” Dillon said. “There’s a lot of Roadrunner fans.”

Dillon didn’t break down school color choices from the survey. “Those were all over the place with every imaginable color listed,” Dillon said.

Frequent responses for the new middle school name were Bethel, Central, Elias Hill, Flatrock, Herb Kirsh, Paraham and Roosevelt.

“You didn’t have any one that really stood out the most,” Dillon said.

Eagles, tigers and hawks were among the more popular mascot suggestions.

For the elementary school, popular name suggestions were Allison Creek, Clover, Elias Hill, Flatrock, Iron Hill, Lake Wylie, Lakeside, Laney, Liberty Hill, Mountainview, Nanny’s Mountain, River and Roosevelt. Variations of eagle were most popular mascot picks, along with gators and tigers.

The district now moves to focus groups ahead of formal recommendations to the school board for all three school names, mascots and color schemes in February.
