They say that your golden years are the best years of your life. For most older Americans, that's how it should be - a time to relax, reflect, and live life in a familiar place. After all, senior citizens in the U.S. have worked tirelessly to build a better economy, serve their communities, and raise families.

However, as seniors grow older, completing daily tasks like showering and enjoying activities such as visiting the historic Sharon Downtown Historic District gets harder without someone by their side. Unfortunately, many older Americans aren't able to rely on their adult children for help. The reality in today's world is that family members do not have the skills or time to dedicate to caring for their parents. That's where Always Best Care Senior Services comes in.

Our in-home care services are for people who prefer to stay at home as they grow older but need ongoing care that family or friends cannot provide. More and more older adults prefer to live far away from long-term, institutionalized facilities and closer to the place where they feel most comfortable - their home. “It was time to consider alternative living arrangements for my mom. She was living on her own in a single-family home that she loved. She was in need of assistance with daily household chores, driving, and managing daily functions. I was given Phil Davidson's name from a social worker. He explained that Phil (and his company Always Best Care), may be a good resource for me and my mom. We began with some in home care (3-5 days a week). Phil met my mom, established a great working relationship with her, and had one of his staff members become my mom's in home caregiver. Phil took the time to get to know my mom and aligned her needs and personality with the right person to help her. Eventually we needed to look for an Assisted Living community. Phil was there to guide us. He arranged meetings with a variety of communities and toured with them with us. Phil knew the right questions to ask and always kept my mom's wishes on his checklist. I especially liked that Phil does not get paid by us, but rather by the facility that we ended up choosing. Phil and his staff were great to work with. Exceptionally professional and understanding of my mom.”

Sarah was kind, patient and very knowledgeable with my parents and their medical issues. Sarah was so helpful to me and my family! I knew my parents were in caring and trustworthy hands! So, I would highly recommend Always Best Care senior Services!!”

“Phil, I just wanted to recount to you what my Mother told me on the phone this morning about your employee, and my parent's caretaker, Vicky Jo. Vicky Jo started with my parents in March of 2012, during a very difficult time. My father had fallen and broken his neck, on top of coping with Parkinson's. My mother took care of him, as well as their home and while we could help some, the day to day chores took a toll on her. We were afraid we were going to lose her health as well. In a huge stroke of luck, we were able to find a two-bedroom apartment at Chandler Place which would provide meals and emergency response services, alleviating a good bit of my mom's responsibilities and stress. In an even bigger stroke of luck, we began using Vicky Jo two hours every morning to help my father with bathing and dressing. In the months that followed, Vicky Jo has not only provided physical support, but significant moral support to both my parents. She is very capable, upbeat and genuine. My mother is absolutely devoted to her and feels she can trust her with anything. We couldn't be more grateful for her, and for you as well for providing her to us. I also want to take a moment to thank you, as you have gone above and beyond in your interaction and care of my parents. I can tell you truly care about my folks and their well being and it is such an amazing thing to see in this day and age when everything seems like it is only about the money. Blessing to you and your business. I know that you will be a God Send to other families as well and I wish you the best. Please know that if you are ever in need of a referral, I would be delighted to provide one for you.”

“Dear Phil, "We would like to thank you and your staff for providing such wonderful live-in care for our Grandfather from June through October 2013. Our family found ourselves in the most unimaginable situation when our Grandmother was unexpectedly hospitalized in late May and ultimately passed away in June. As you know, she was the sole caregiver for our Grandfather who has severe Alzheimer's disease. We are so very fortunate that we discovered your agency! You were able to promptly place qualified caregivers in his home and this gave our family immediate peace of mind. The level of care and compassion that you and your caregivers demonstrated toward our Grandfather is more than we ever anticipated and we will be forever grateful. You all walked with him through the terrible tragedy of losing his wife of 67 years. You and your staff provided extraordinary physical and emotional care for him through his grief and made getting him back to a "normal" life your top priority upon her death. In addition to the care you all provided my Grandfather, you were so kind to help educate us on the progression of Alzheimer's. You were a wonderful resource to us on what to expect in the next phases of this disease and help us plan for long-term care for him. While we are very sad to have to place him in a memory care-assisted living facility, we made the decision knowing that this will be the best place for him as he ages and his disease worsens. Your guidance and expertise in helping us choose the right facility for him helped make this daunting task bearable. Thank you again for all that you have done for our grandfather and for our family! We will be forever grateful!”

What is Non-Medical Senior Care in Sharon, SC?

lm-check

Home is where the heart is. While that saying can sound a tad cliche, it is especially true for many seniors living in America. When given a choice, older adults most often prefer to grow older at home. An AARP study found that three out of four adults over the age of 50 want to stay in their homes and communities as they age.

lm-check

When you begin to think about why, it makes sense. Home offers a sense of security, comfort, and familiarity.

lm-check

The truth is, as we age, we begin to rely on others for help. When a family is too busy or lives too far away to fulfill this role, in-home senior care is often the best solution. Home care services allow seniors to enjoy personal independence while also receiving trustworthy assistance from a trained caregiver.

lm-check

At Always Best Care, we offer a comprehensive range of home care services to help seniors stay healthy while they get the help they need to remain independent. As your senior loved one gets older, giving them the gift of senior care is one of the best ways to show your love, even if you live far away.

Respite Care

Respite Care Services

According to AARP, more than 53 million adults living in the U.S. provide care to someone over 50 years old. Unfortunately, these caregivers experience stress, exhaustion, and even depression. Our respite care services help family caregivers address urgent obligations, spend time with their children, and enjoy nearby activities. Perhaps more importantly, respite care gives family members time to recharge and regroup. Taking personal time to de-stress reduces the risk of caregiver burnout. So, if you've always wanted to eat at the local Oak Steakhouse or visit Historic Brattonsville, don't feel bad. Doing so is great for both you and your loved one.

At the end of the day, our goal is to become a valuable part of your senior's daily routine. That way, we may help give them the highest quality of life possible. We know that staying at home is important for your loved one, and we are here to help make sure that is possible.

If you have been on the fence about non-medical home care, there has never been a better time than now to give your senior the care, assistance, and companionship they deserve.

Aging in Place: The Preferred Choice for Most Seniors

While it's true that some seniors have complicated medical needs that prevent them from staying at home, aging in place is often the best arrangement for seniors and their families. With a trusted caregiver, seniors have the opportunity to live with a sense of dignity and do so as they see fit - something that is unavailable to many older people today.

In-home care makes it possible for millions of seniors to age in place every year. Rather than moving to a strange nursing home, seniors have the chance to stay at home where they feel the happiest and most comfortable.

Here are just a few of the reasons why older men and women prefer to age at home:

How much does a senior's home truly mean to them?

A study published by the American Society on Aging found that more than half of seniors say their home's emotional value means more than how much their home is worth in monetary value. It stands to reason, then, that a senior's home is where they want to grow old.

With the help of elderly care in Sharon, SC, seniors don't have to age in a sterilized care facility. Instead, they can age gracefully in the place they want to be most: their home. In contrast, seniors who move to a long-term care facility must adapt to new environments, new people, and new systems that the facility implements. At this stage in life, this kind of drastic change can be more harmful than helpful.

Institutional care facilities like nursing homes often put large groups of people together to live in one location. On any given day, dozens of staff members and caregivers run in and out of these facilities. Being around so many new people in a relatively small living environment can be dangerous for a seniors' health and wellbeing. When you consider that thousands of seniors passed away in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, opting for in-home care is often a safer, healthier choice for seniors.

Aging in place has been shown to improve seniors' quality of life, which helps boost physical health and also helps insulate them from viral and bacterial risks found in elderly living facilities.

For many seniors, the ability to live independently with assistance from a caregiver is a priceless option. With in-home care, seniors experience a higher level of independence and freedom - much more so than in other settings like a nursing home. When a senior has the chance to age in place, they get to live life on their own terms, inside the house that they helped make into a home. More independence means more control over their personal lives, too, which leads to increased levels of fulfillment, happiness, and personal gratification. Over time, these positive feelings can manifest into a healthier, longer life.

More independence, a healthier life, and increased comfort are only a few benefits of aging in place. You have to take into consideration the role of cost and convenience. Simply put, it's usually easier and more affordable to help seniors age in place than it is to move them into an institutional care facility. According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, seniors who age in the comfort of their homes can save thousands of dollars per month.

In-home care services from Always Best Care, for instance, are often less expensive than long-term solutions, which can cost upwards of six figures per year. To make matters worse, many residential care facilities are reluctant to accept long-term care insurance and other types of payment assistance.

With Always Best Care's home care services, seniors and their families have a greater level of control over their care plans. In-home care gives seniors the chance to form a bond with a trusted caregiver and also receive unmatched care that is catered to their needs. In long-term care facilities, seniors and their loved ones have much less control over their care plan and have less of a say in who provides their care.

 Elderly Care Sharon, SC

Affordable Care

In-home care is a valuable resource that empowers seniors to age in place on their own terms. However, a big concern for many families and their loved ones is how much in-home care costs. If you're worried that in-home care is too expensive, you may be pleasantly surprised to learn that it is one of the most affordable senior care arrangements available.

Typically, hiring an Always Best Care in-home caregiver for a few hours a week is more affordable than sending your loved one to a long-term care facility. This is true even for seniors with more complex care needs.

At Always Best Care, we will work closely with you and your family to develop a Care Plan that not only meets your care needs, but your budget requirements, too. Once we discover the level of care that you or your senior need, we develop an in-home care plan that you can afford.

In addition to our flexible care options, families should also consider the following resources to help offset potential home care costs:

If your loved one qualifies, Medicaid may help reduce in-home care costs. Review your SC's Medicaid program laws and benefits, and make sure your senior's financial and medical needs meet Medicaid eligibility requirements.
Attendance and aid benefits through military service can cover a portion of the costs associated with in-home care for veterans and their spouses.
Many senior care services like in-home care are included in long-term care insurance options. Research different long-term care solutions to find a plan that provides coverage for senior care.
Home care can be included as part of a senior's private insurance plan. Read over your loved one's insurance policy carefully or speak with their insurance provider to determine if in-home care is covered.
Depending on the life insurance plan, you may be able to apply your policy toward long-term care. You may be able to use long-term-care coverage to help pay for in-home elderly care.
 Senior Care Sharon, SC

Compassionate Care. Trusted Caregivers.

When you or your senior loved one needs assistance managing daily tasks at home, finding a qualified caregiver can be challenging. It takes a special kind of person to provide reliable care for your senior loved one. However, a caregiver's role involves more than meal preparation and medication reminders. Many seniors rely on their caregivers for companionship, too.

Our companion care services give seniors the chance to socialize in a safe environment and engage in activities at home. These important efforts boost morale and provide much-needed relief from repetitive daily routines. A one-on-one, engaging conversation can sharpen seniors' minds and give them something in which to be excited.

At Always Best Care, we only hire care providers that we would trust to care for our own loved ones. Our senior caregivers in Sharon, SC understand how important it is to listen and communicate with their seniors. A seemingly small interaction, like a short hug goodbye, can make a major difference in a senior's day. Instead of battling against feelings of isolation, seniors begin to look forward to seeing their caregiver each week.

Understanding the nuances of senior care is just one of the reasons why our care providers are so great at their job.

Unlike some senior care companies, our caregivers must undergo extensive training before they work for Always Best Care. In addition, our caregivers receive ongoing training throughout the year. This training ensures that their standard of care matches up to the high standards we've come to expect. During this training, they will brush up on their communication skills, safety awareness, and symptom spotting. That way, your loved one receives the highest level of non-medical home care from day one.

Assisted Living Referral Services

While it's true that many seniors prefer to age at home, sometimes in-home care isn't the best fit. For those seniors and their families, choosing an assisted living facility makes more sense. Unfortunately, finding the optimal care facility is easier said than done in today's day and age. That's when Always Best Care's assisted living referral services begin to make a lot of sense.

Assisted living is a form of housing intended for seniors who require varying degrees of medical and personal attention. Accommodations may include single rooms, apartments, or shared living arrangements. Assisted living communities are typically designed to resemble a home-like environment and are physically constructed to encourage the independence of residents.

Respite Care Sharon, SC

At assisted living communities, seniors receive help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and eating. They may also benefit from coordination of services with outside healthcare providers, and monitoring of resident activities to ensure their health, safety, and well-being. Caregivers who work at assisted living communities can also provide medication administration and personal care services for older adults.

Other services offered within assisted living communities can include some or all of the following:

  • Housekeeping
  • Laundry
  • Recreational Activities
  • Social Outings
  • Emergency Medical Response
  • Medication Monitoring
  • Family Visitation
  • Personal Care
 Caregivers Sharon, SC

At Always Best Care, our representatives can match your senior's emotional, physical, and financial needs with viable assisted living communities nearby. Results are based on comparative data, so you can select the best choice for you or your loved one.

Always Best Care works closely with local senior living communities to gain valuable knowledge that we then use to help seniors and their loved ones make informed decisions. This information can include basic care and rent, resident availability, and services provided. Because Always Best Care is compensated by these communities, we provide senior living referral services at no extra cost to you.

Some of the most popular assisted living communities to consider in our area include the following:

  • Parc at Sharon Amity
  • The Sharon at SouthPark
  • Rose of Sharon Heritage
  • Sharon Village Retirement Apartments
  • Soto Assisted Living Home
  • Rose of Sharon Personal Care Home

On Monday night, the North Augusta, SC council voted unanimously to name a new amphitheater in the Riverside Village area of the city after local music icon Sharon Jones.

The newly-christened Sharon Jones Amphitheater, which sits along the bank of the Savannah River and can hold roughly 600 people, had its official ribbon-cutting ceremony back in June, when it was still being tentatively called the Amphitheater at Riverside Village. You can check out some photos of the newly-christened Sharon Jones Amphitheater here.

Sharon Jones, the late soul queen best known for her work as the frontwoman of the Dap-Kings, lost her battle with pancreatic cancer four years ago this month. Jones was born in Augusta, GA but lived across the river in North Augusta, SC. Per the Augusta Chronicle, “The Greater North Augusta Chamber of Commerce said she was baptized at North Augusta Baptist Church and had her first singing role as an angel in a Christmas play before moving to New York with her mother at age 3.”

Members of Jones’ family attended the council hearing, which resulted in a 6-0 vote in favor of the amphitheater’s naming (Resolution 2020-52). “She would be flabbergasted right now,” Jones’ sister Willia Stringer said. “We didn’t live far from there. My father used to walk down with us down to the river. Back then, there was nothing there but trees and the river.”

Though she began to attain success later in her life and maintained a busy touring schedule, Sharon Jones continued to spend off time in North Augusta with her family. Late in her life, she purchased a home there for her mother. Though she never attained the mainstream fame her talent seemed destined to invite, she developed a dedicated cult following and a 2014 Grammy nomination for her album, Give The People What They Want, and among other honors, was the subject of the acclaimed 2015 documentary Miss Sharon Jones!

As Rolling Stone notes, the idea for renaming the venue was started by Augusta Chronicle columnist and veteran journalist Don Rhodes, a friend of Jones’. Via his own column and various conversations with North Augusta mayor Robert Pettit, who was previously unaware of Jones’s work, the suggestion gradually became a reality. As Rhodes explained, “In North Augusta, there’s no public park or building named after a black citizen, and I said it was the right thing to do. And who else should be it named for? There’s nobody else from North Augusta who had that kind of worldwide fame.”

The town is planning a dedication ceremony for the venue in March of 2021 pending COVID restrictions at that time.

North Augusta has never been shy in expressing its admiration for Jones. In 2017, the North Augusta Chamber of Commerce posthumously honored Jones as the city’s “2016 Citizen of the Year,” noting, “In those 60 years she lived a life that only most of us can dream of: jet-setting, performing on stages around the world and starring in movies, but she never forgot her hometown, her beloved North Augusta.”

Last month, Daptone Records released a new collection of rare Sharon Jones covers, Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Rendition Was In). Stream or download it here.

Sharonview Federal Credit Union announced Monday it has completed its purchase of two bank branches in an affluent and fast-growing section of South Carolina’s coast.

Bank OZK based in Little Rock, Ark. ($27.2 billion in assets as of Dec. 31) sold its Beaufort County branches: A 6,774-square-foot branch on Hilton Head Island and a 9,500-square-foot branch in Bluffton, seven miles to the west on the mainland. The bank said Jan. 21 that it expected a gain of $4 million to $5 million from the sale.

Sharonview ($1.6 billion, 94,527 members) is based in Indian Land, S.C., just south of Charlotte. The purchase, announced last July, puts Sharonview in one of the state’s fastest growing areas, Bluffton, and one of its most affluent, Hilton Head Island.

“We’ve had expansion on our minds for years,” Sharonview President/CEO Bill Partin said. “Our wish list included Hilton Head, but it had to be the right opportunity. When we got word last year of two Bank OZK branches possibly being for sale, we knew: This is what we’ve been waiting for.”

“We knew this demographic was interested in retirement planning services, mortgages, car loans and credit cards,” Partin continued. “We have all the right products to offer. Everything aligned,” he said.

The two branches have combined deposits of $112 million and a small loan portfolio.

The purchase of these branches represented Sharonview’s expansion into business services. The credit union will begin serving the Bank OZK business customers who have chosen membership with Sharonview. Business services will open to other markets later this spring.

Sharonview’s news release said all seven employees from the two branches were offered jobs at Sharonview, and all accepted. Two new roles, including a mortgage loan officer, were created to serve this market, and those are being filled by Sharonview employees.

Both branches have lobbies, drive-thru windows and drive-up ATMs.

The number of credit union branches had been rising slowly from at least 2016 to 2019, but NCUA data showed a drop last year. It lists 21,515 branches (including headquarters) in December, 449 fewer than a year earlier. South Carolina had 348 branches at year’s end, two fewer than a year ago.

As of Dec. 31, NCUA data showed Sharonview had 17 branches, as well as its headquarters.

It closed a branch in Bridgewater, N.J., last July because it was located inside a building closed by pharmaceuticals manufacturer, Sanofi, one of Sharonview’s Select Employer Groups. Those members now must bank online or via mobile apps.

Sharonview is the third largest credit union based in South Carolina behind Founders Federal Credit Union ($3.1 billion, 223,140 members) based in Lancaster, 26 miles south of Fort Mill and South Carolina Federal Credit Union based in North Charleston ($2.2 billion, 168,638 members).

But the bulk of Sharonview’s branch weight is in North Carolina. As of December, it had 11 branches in North Carolina and six branches in South Carolina — most of them in western South Carolina.

Hilton Head Island and Bluffton were Bank OZK’s only South Carolina branches. Bank OZK, which changed its name in 2018 from Bank of the Ozarks, ended 2020 with 255 branches and other offices.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WPDE) — A Horry County resident was aboard the Carnival Sunshine during Memorial Day weekend when the ship sailed through a severe storm.

Videos from the ship have since gone viral of waves that thrashed the side of the ship.

The vessel was constantly rocking and appeared to suffer flooding on the lower decks.

TOP STORY: Officer drove 128mph, lost sight of suspect vehicle in deadly chase near Longs: Report

Sharon Tutrone, who is a professor at Coastal Carolina University, said she went about 12 hours without an update from the captain or crew with no wi-fi or cellphone service to know what was going on.

"I grabbed hold of the bed, and I said in my head, I said 'oh my God this ship is going to capsize,'" said Tutrone.

She said at moments, she wasn't sure she was going to make it.

"When that wave hit, that had to be a 20 to 25-foot wave that hit us. I will never forget that crushing sound, it was like it just slammed into the ship and that wave just shattered a glass building, that's what it sounded like, it was just glass breaking, and I thought the front end of the ship was taken off," she recalled.

Trutrone compared the frightening experience to her cancer diagnosis and recovery.

"I just recently beat breast cancer, and I thought going through that was scary, and I felt anxiety with that, but never to the level that I felt on this trip. I mean I was on pins and needles, my heart was in my mouth that whole time," she explained.

Despite the horrifying experience, Tutrone said she is not going to let it ruin her love of cruises. She plans to be back on one again soon, just not with Carnival.

A representative from Carnival said in a statement:

"Carnival Sunshine’s return to Charleston was impacted by the weather and rough seas on Saturday. Guests on board the ship were safe. Our medical staff helped a small number of guests and crew members who needed minor assistance. The weather’s prolonged impact on the Charleston area delayed the ship’s arrival on Sunday and as a result, the next voyage’s embarkation was also delayed. We appreciate the patience and understanding of all our guests."

The Army veteran served in both World War II and the Korean War. Saturday, he hit a milestone: 100 years of age.

SHARON, S.C. — Lieutenant Colonel Martin B. Roller has lived a good life, he likes to say. Saturday, the two-war veteran turned 100 — or as he points out, 36,500 days.

Roller was born on November 9, 1919, in Cedar Gap, Missouri. When he was 21, he joined the Army on October 2, 1941 — just months before the attack on Pearl Harbor. Roller served in both World War II and the Korean War before honorably retiring from the military on his birthday in 1979.

“I’m happy to have come through both of them, and I hope I never have to see another one in my lifetime or any time,” Roller said, adding that he hopes others feel called to serve their country if the time comes.

After retiring from the Army, he went into business and owned a grocery store until 1984 then completely retired as he says, “and called it quits.” Roller now lives with his wife Mary Jean Rich-Roller in Sharon, South Carolina.

Saturday afternoon, dozens of friends, family and new faces alike came to the Sharon home to greet Roller, thank him for his service and wish him a happy birthday. As he sat on the back porch with a red white and blue blanket draped over him, several people came up to shake his hand.

“Today is a glorious day for celebrating 100 years of life for my husband, which I love dearly,” Rich-Roller said. “We had to do something to celebrate with him. My girls just went overboard and love to do everything for him. We’re just enjoying the day and celebrating with him for 100 years of good living.”

Rich-Roller said living to 100 is a milestone for anyone, but especially her husband as a two-war veteran. She said even decades since retiring, Roller is still “American-ized,” loyal to the Army and the United States.

“He’s crazy about it,” Rich-Roller said. “That’s how he lives.”

The two have been married for 15 years and moved to South Carolina around seven years ago from Georgia. He had previously been stationed at Fort Benning in Georgia, and years later they met at the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) nearby.

Rich-Roller said she remembers dancing that night. Roller is recovering from a back injury right now, but the two still love to dance together.

“I’ve lived a good life,” Roller said. “I can’t kick on anything that’s happened to me so far. I have a wonderful family, and here I am, enjoying life and hoping to get a little bit more. I’m planning on being around for a few more years, and I hope that I make it and I’m going to try real hard. If I don’t make it, I've lived a good life.”

Roller grew up in a family of eight children. He now has one brother left, he still calls him his “baby brother.” His brother wasn’t able to make the flight from California to the party, but they still keep up.

“I’m happy, the happiest I’ve ever been in my life right now,” Roller said. “I miss all of them. I miss my mother an awful lot … I’m just happy to be alive today and happy to know that I’ve got, I hope, a few more years.”

In the years since leaving the Army and the working world, Roller said retirement has been all he’s hoped for: quality time with his wife and family, petting his beloved dog Sassy, and plenty of time to go golfing and fishing.

Roller said he hopes everyone is able to have as good a life as he’s had. He encourages people to live life to the best of their ability.

“I’ve lived a good, free life,” he said. “I’ve enjoyed it very much. Life has been good to me. I hope I’ve been halfway decent to the life that I’ve lived.”
